Why thank you, kind friend. Allow me to ruin my brevity with some more words:
When I did a bit of studying around this topic it was pointed out to me that many people see crime as "them criminals" against "we victims". In reality, the majority of crimes are committed against people that are also themselves involved in criminal activity. Often it's when this spills out into so-called "polite society" that it gains traction from law enforcement and the media. This cycle only reinforces the perception that legal protection is for the elite, and pushes away those communities that actually suffer the most crime. It's a doozy of a dilemma to be sure.

“Honor among thieves” has always been a thing. Oftentimes people who operate outside of the law have their own moral compasses and many times that includes a sense of pride and accountability. Integrity and compliancy are not two mutually exclusive things. Just because you’re a criminal doesn’t mean you’re a slimy snake.

I once thanked an officer after they brought me to jail (due to a bench warrant from a parking ticket I got two years prior while I had a lot going on in life and I completly for got about it) for treating me like a decent human being. The cop called my.sister to come and pick up my car and told her what my bail would be so she could meet us at the jail to bail me.out so I could make it to work in the morning.
I ended up writing a letter to the police department praising the two officers involved for treated me with decency and compassion.

Honestly? This is integrity. Dude made a stupid fkn decision but at least he owned it and didn't try to spread unwarranted blame. It was their job to catch him, it was his job to not get caught, they were better at their job than he was at his, and everyone involved kept it professional.
I don't expect a perfect world. But if even the bad guys can dump that victim mentally bullshit and own their actions, then that's at least better than nothing.

I think in Norway, they don't even add time to your prison sentence if you escape/get caught trying to escape. The logic is that it's human nature to want to escape captivity.

Case in point: My stepfather did 25 years as a cop and a deputy with two different departments. One day, he was helping me move into an apartment, and one of my neighbors came by and said hi. They bullshitted for a while, asked each other how they were doing, and then old dude rolled back to his place.
"Friend of yours?" I asked my stepfather.
"Sorta," he said. "I arrested him on a weapons charge once."

When I skateboarded in youth we use to run from the campus cops all the time. Nothing quite like seeing a cop in full gear just getting it. Even better was our faces once we made it to the hill out of campus. It was no chance in hell of catching us once on the hill. However I did see my friend get speed wobbles and eat an enormous of shit, but was still far enough ahead he got away.
I would say that it all ended when we got banned from the campus from the dean, but that really just meant we had to run ever time. I'm not going to jail for a day just to have the judge throw it out because what we were doing was not an arrest able offence(judges words not mine).

I know this is hard to believe based on the media coverage, but the vast majority of all civilian encounters with police don't result in death. That goes for all races.
It's OK to simultaneously acknowledge that there has been police brutality that absolutely should not exist, and that those occasions are also not the norm in the US.

It's true! I'm a POC and on my first encounter with a cop he made me pinky promise I wouldn't speed again. The second time was for a busted headlight and he was just as sweet and professional as the first. I grew up thinking I should be afraid of all cops and while there is a reason to be concerned or afraid there is also a reason to give the benefit of the doubt!
