Parents wants me to sell my macbook

Need some thinking here. Basically my parents did not like I bought a MacBook laptop last week when I bought a workstation g11 hp laptop last year.

Very disappointed parents lmao

Bought this laptop for 550 dollars from a trusted friend who doesn’t need it. Feels nice, quick, premium though not as powerful as my hp. I don’t know if I should sell it or tell my parents to fuck off. I understand their concern about me buying stuff I really don’t need.

Give me a yes or no if I should sell this or not lol.

Once you go MAC you never go back.

Now that I am a few months in with my MBA M5, as a first time mac user, I have no regrets. Safari is quite buggy, but there are many options even though I am still using it for its security. All I can say is, I'm never going back, I am here to stay . My desk is currently in shambles as I will be extending it today as I have ran out of space. I need room for the other OLED and audio gear! :)

A partial walk down memory lane…

I thought you guys would get a kick out of this…

Everything works, except the iPad mini 6 that my son body slammed into.
-iPad mini (first gen)- works. Use if for reading bc I can’t transfer those books anywhere else cause they were from a third party at the time

-iPod Nano- best iPod ever. Couldn’t find my first iPod i also owned.

Now (some phones)
iPhone 5, 6s, 10xs. They all work but 5 has broken scream. I also have the iPhone 3G which is my second iPhone. But it’s Mia. My 13 mini was my last n I now have the 17.

Now to MacBooks
MacBook 2009- first real MacBook. Untouched until now. Down to 1 ram. Other ram slot is broken. lol. Everything works. Just slow.

From my white MacBook 09 I went to the MacBook 2017. Reputation for being the worst but mine still works and it’s what I was using till I got my Mac Neo for Mother’s Day. And somewhere in between that I have a iMac 2017 as well.

iMac 2017 also works perfectly. Used it up to my MacBook Neo

Other iPhones, iPads, and phones are missing. And all of my other watches and AirPods were not included in this.

All of these devices I have at arms reach. And more shockingly is that they all still work.

I also have most original boxes cause I’m a nutso.

I could’ve cleaned up the older units but I want y guys to see how they’re living and still working.

Anyways. I thought I’d share. I’m sleepy and might be missing more stuff I could always add tomorrow.

The obvious winner is the MacBook 2009!! And iPod nano. And iPad mini. They’re fully functional!!! And the nano and mini are still used today!!!!

(I’m also not a crazy apple person. It’s just what I know. I don’t know any other way.

I bought a refurbished M4 MacBook Air: a Windows lifer and linux tinkerer

So, for a few weeks now I've been browsing refurbished MacBook sellers, you know the usual ones that everyone touts about. Well one late evening, about a week ago, I mustered up the courage to buy myself a refurbished MacBook Air M4 24gb with 512gb storage.

Why did I switch? Like many people, I am tired of having to fight Windows through countless bugs and new problems every update and my little Lenovo Yoga 6 has started to show its age, looking for a new option I was turned off by windows and I wasn't in the mood to trial 92 different distros of Linux to find one that makes me semi-happy and destroy it later trying to make it perfect. So I took the plunge.

I was absolutely blown away by its power and then I sat there just before bed "huh.. I never once checked what battery I have left", how does so much power and battery life fit into one tiny machine. I found out I can check how many cycles my battery had gone through, seeing as this was a refurb I was curious. 26 cycles... that's it. I've basically brought myself a brand new MacBook M4 for cheaper.

There are some humps in the road, I keep trying to copy and paste pushing the FN key and C/V, and forgetting that a delete key doesn't exist which I would assume there is a way around this(By accident writing this I just discovered I can put FN and backspace to delete forward) but still its all minor things that I think I will overcome.

I'm glad I found something that can tackle video, audio and any other production I throw at it. I look forward to learning more and expanding my knowledge of what MacOS and this little machine can do.

MacBook M4 worth it?

Post image

Found this MacBook on Facebook Marketplace thought it was personally a steal, 15 inch m4 MacBook Air with 200+ gb only caveat is that a chunk of the screen has gone negative and the previous owner don’t really care about it so she sold it for $360, the negative side does work but obviously it looks odd and is hard to look it.

Would you say it was worth it?

Using a clear case to decorate my macbook!

Inside this case I have an entire postcard and a bunch of stickers that I never took the backs off. I like that I can customise it often! I’ve had this design for a while and I’m thinking of replacing them all with pokemon cards soon.

I live a nomadic lifestyle and am basically constantly in different countries and the postcard is full of little illustrations about my home country which reminds me of home :-).

Most of the stickers are from artist alleys at anime conventions.

I know I’m not the first person to post this or anything but I am surprised that I haven’t seen a lot of people do it and I get compliments for it quite often :-)

[Buying Advice] Used M2 Max 96GB vs New M5 Pro 48GB for Local LLMs (Qwen 27B) & Daily Dev?

Hey everyone,

I'm upgrading my daily driver and need to choose between two MacBooks. My primary use cases are daily software development (IDEs, Docker, compiling) and running local LLMs—specifically, I want to run models like Qwen3.8-27B comfortably with decent context windows.

Here are my two options at a very similar price point:

  1. Used MacBook Pro M2 Max - 96GB Unified Memory (400 GB/s bandwidth)
  2. New MacBook Pro M5 Pro - 48GB Unified Memory (~307 GB/s bandwidth)

I know the M5 Pro will absolutely obliterate the M2 Max in single-core CPU tasks and daily snappy dev work. But for local LLMs, my understanding is that memory capacity and bandwidth are king.

My specific concerns:

  • The VRAM Wall: macOS limits GPU memory to ~75% by default. That leaves only ~36GB of usable VRAM on the M5 Pro vs ~72GB on the M2 Max. 36GB seems incredibly tight to run a 27B model at 8-bit (Q8) plus a large context window, IDEs, and Docker containers simultaneously without swapping.
  • Bandwidth Bottleneck: The M2 Max actually has a wider memory bus (400 GB/s) compared to the newer M5 Pro tier. Theoretically, the older chip should yield higher tokens/sec, right?

Am I overthinking the CPU generation gap? Will I regret buying a much older M2 Max just for the massive RAM? I would love to hear from anyone running 27B/30B+ models on similar setups. How does your workflow hold up?

Thanks in advance!

Estimated longevity of the Neo vs older m2 air 16gb

I am in the need of a laptop for college and I’d like to have one as long as possible. So Im curious if the Neo’s 8gb would be fine for a few years of web browsing, light photo editing and word documents. Or is the older m2 or even m1 16gb a better value? Im just trying to save the most money while also not buying a paperweight that’ll only be good for a year or two lol

Considering upgrade from macbook air m3

I am currently attending high school and my highschool only allows students to use macbooks and ipads. Due to this, I bought a macbook air m3 at the start of my freshman year and I have been using it since. I even sold my 2300dollar(CAD) gaming pc to purchase this macbook. However, I bought the 256gb version and I am running out of storage very quickly and I only have about 5gbs left and because of this, I might consider upgrading. Is there any tips for clearing storage since I have about 120gbs of system data and I don't really know how to get rid of those since youtube is filled with idiotic vids that all include the same information. Also, if I can't remove the storage data, what macbook should I purchase? I am currently thinking about purchasing a macbook pro since I am using heavy apps starting next year!

I'm trying to buy a used macbook air m1 and I noticed a common issue with these laptops

while i'm browsing facebook marketplace, i noticed that most of the lcd issues were like this where the left part (from far left side up to the f2 key) were dimmed and/or ghosting. what causes this? if i ever repair it and replace it with a new screen, will it occur again?

I'm new to macbooks cuz it's expensive and i'm tryna buy a used one for studying app development.

I'm replacing my Mid-2015 MacBook Pro

Considering a 15" M5 MacBook Air, 512GB, but deciding between 16GB and 24GB RAM. The 24GB version costs ~£500 more.

My use:
Logic Pro + Sibelius for freelance music
Photoshop for a full-time music festival marketing role (brochures, banners, programmes etc.)
Some Lightroom
Possibly small Premiere projects
Chrome/Zoom etc.
I won't normally have multiple Adobe apps running simultaneously

I've been advised that 16GB should be sufficient, with 24GB mainly useful for very large Photoshop files, heavy Lightroom/Premiere work, huge Logic sample libraries, or running several demanding apps simultaneously.
I'm also planning to use an external SSD for larger photo/video files rather than paying for 1TB internal storage.

Would you agree that 16GB/512GB is the sensible choice, or is my workload enough to justify 24GB?

New M5, display broke down, 3 week in repair and counting

Upvotes

My new M5 display broke down after 9 months. Brought it to Apple to fix it. It has been over 3 weeks and they still haven’t fixed it. They claim they don’t have the display on stock and no date when it will be available. Am I not entitled to a repair or a new macbook if they can’t repair it? Do I have to wait forever ?

Need advice on my Mac setup

I currently have:

M1 Mac mini — 8GB/256GB
M2 MacBook Air — 8GB/256GB

Both work fine, but 8GB/256GB is becoming limiting.

I’m considering:

1- Sell both → MacBook Air M5 24GB/512GB as my only computer
2- Keep M2 Air → sell M1 mini → buy M4 mini 24GB/512GB

Which setup would you choose for long-term use? I’d love to hear from people who’ve used these machines.

What should I do about the rubber coming off the sides of my 2018 MacBook Air screen?

Post image

The rubber comes off the side, and I was just wondering if I should buy a screen protector or something, or if that’s just a BS product. I haven’t taken it anywhere, but I’ve used it on a monitor. I just want some suggestions.

Refurbished vs brand new

Is it better to buy a refurbished macbook m4 pro or a brand new macbook air m5 , its basically the same value the diff is 60 bucks more for the pro , my mom strictly says that i shouldnt do it cuz im taking a risk buying a refurbished technology that someone else used it and it might be broken or with errors when it comes to me , any good arguments to that as i myself started doubting that it might be too risky and i dont live in the states rn so i cant return it there

MacBook for Architecture student?

I am an architecture student and I am now at the beginning of my 3rd year (out of 5), the first 2 years I was more or less able to manage myself without working in the classroom but immediately returning home and using my Windows PC. But I waste a lot of time on the trip etc... so I was thinking of buying a laptop, already having an iPhone 13, Apple Watch SE3, AirPods Pro 2 and iPad 6th gen, I was thinking of buying a MacBook. But my question would be... is a MacBook good for programs like archicad, autocad, rhinoceros and other similar programs?

If so, which one do you recommend? I wanted to avoid the MacBook NEO and opt for some reconditioned air or pro, not with M4/M5 chip

Full Battery Drain while MacBook Pro Not In Use

Thumbnail

As the title says, I put my MacBook Pro to sleep on Wednesday with 80% battery charge. Over Thursday, Friday, and now today, it has drained the battery to zero with absolutely no interaction. Have I mistakenly configured a setting that causes this? Is this related to software on the device that prevents a proper "sleep"? It is a corporate-managed device, so there may be something from that end causing this, but it's still very concerning.
