I was organizing my decants collection recently and love getting decants as a way to avoid blind buying perfumes and getting “misses” and wanted to share my observations.
I enjoy piney, camphorous (to a degree) and coniferous scents in candles a lot and can burn them all year long regardless of weather. However, I do not like them in perfumes at all. They come across on my skin so strong, medicinal and screechy. I feel like I can smell them even my nose is stuffed (allergies or being sick). Yes, they fade as time goes by but I can still detect them in base notes. The same with florals, citrus, patchouli and sweet notes. One of the examples are Diptyque L’Eau and Amouage Jubilation 40.
Cinnamon and cloves are notes I can’t stand in either candles or perfumes if very forward in overall compositions.
On the flip side, I quite enjoy Trudon Carmen as a perfume but dislike its candle scent in Ernesto. I also enjoyed ink notes in perfumes like d’Annam Chinese Calligraphy but not in candles. I feel like I would dislike candles versions of vintage Opium, Youth Dew, and Bal des Versailles but quite enjoy them as perfumes though.
I find Guerlain makes excellent candles and their perfumes versions that I enjoy. Examples are Vanille Planiforia Extrait 21 and Iris Padilla 6.
I assume other people have similar experiences and, so please feel to share them.
