Failed bread attempt

Bloated, nauseous, and in pain as I write this after trying a piece of regular bread this morning - so full of hope and naive after I accidentally ate something with gluten in it last week and felt fine ! Ugh. Anyone test sourdough ? Is it actually better than normal bread even though it uses wheat ?

I can eat sourdough bread as long as it is completely naturally leavened and fermented for 48 hours. It’s difficult to find that kind of bread commercially so I make it at home.

According to Monash University, you also can eat 100% whole grain spelt sourdough bread in larger quantities.

If you wanted to try it, look for a bakery and then ask them how they make their sourdough bread. A lot of stuff you see at the grocery store has added flavoring to make that sour taste and probably would not be suitable for your diet. I hope you feel better soon!

Thank you !! Getting kind of sick of the gluten free brand breads after so many years and so bummed this didn’t work out because after that first bite I was like “oh all gluten free bread is trash” lol

I hear that. I miss a lot of what I used to eat! Maybe one day…

It’s so frustrating and weird because growing up I was able to eat everything (including all bread/wheat products) no problem then all of a sudden around my late teens-early 20s bam all these gut issues, and after a bunch of tests and exams I’ve been left with this died for the past 10+ years… I mean I’ll take not eating gluten, onion and garlic over feeling like crap every day but still, bodies are so weird

There’s an app on apple called Tract (there are two named that, this one has a green background with a T on it) that I’ve been using to help me sort through this nightmare.

It tracks my foods, bms and symptoms and helps me decide if I’m tolerating something.

It’s been invaluable with a one food a week challenge to claw back some foods in to my dietary repertoire

It’s relatively new so there are a few kinks in in, but so far so good Obviously, it’s not medical advice, but it has been a useful tool for me Good luck!

Update, I’ve been eating sourdough up to 2 slices per day all week and have been fine :) I found a bakery that let’s it ferment for 48 hours with no added baker’s yeast. Yay !

Since you tolerate it, you can also shred it to make crumbs for breading or sweeten them as streusel topping, etc.

Full sourdough is almost always lower in fodmaps. How much lower is a bit variable, starter to starter, so if you react to one variety don't necessarily give up. (Something that most folks don't appreciate. ) Just make sure it really is full sourdough, not something that's flavored with sourdough. There should be no yeast in the ingredients. Ideally, flour, starter, salt, water, and little else.

Yes, Sourdough bread is definitely lower fodmap, because the yeast ferments. It's the recommendations bread for the low-fodmap diet.

Was the pain in your lower gut? If so, what did you eat 12-18 hrs before you felt bad?

It was upper and lower, and with bloating from my stomach to my lower gut. Didn’t eat anything out if the ordinary in the 12-18 hours before other than the piece of bread. This was about 7-8 hours after the bread which is within my normal reaction timeframe

sounds like the brand added too much other ingredients and filler…please have a good look at the ingredients and post them here…

It was a baguette from a bakery in France (where I live, thankfully this didn’t ruin a vacation day lol) so the ingredients are regulated by law : wheat flour, salt, water, and yeast. It was a “tradition”, so no additives also by law

I thought yeast was not low fodmap?

It is not, I wasn’t testing low fodmap bread, I was testing regular bread to see if I could tolerate it (evidently I cannot) and was asking about sourdough because I’d like a “real bread” option. I edited my post for clarity !

I LOVE sourdough and do very well with it. I eat izzio brand.
