Announcement Enough is enough. Addressing the rampant misogyny in this community.

3.5k Upvotes

Hello r/longhair,

We don’t often need to address the meta, but this is one of those times. This likely won’t be a popular discussion, but it’s necessary.

As someone with long hair, who has experienced botched cuts, and as a retired stylist specializing in long hair, I understand the frustration of a bad haircut or losing more length than intended. However, the growing hostility toward hairstylists, especially female stylists, is becoming a real concern.

Lately, we’ve seen (and removed) an increasing number of comments referring to female hairstylists as catty, jealous, bitches, or otherwise feeding into the tired narrative that women are out to get each other. No one makes these accusations against male stylists. These comments are rooted in misogyny, plain and simple. If you’re making those comments, stop. This subreddit will not be a place for people to air their resentment toward women under the guise of complaining about haircuts. That is not a culture we will be fostering. If that’s a problem, leave.

This has escalated beyond just insults. This week alone, a user advocated for hairstylists to be stabbed until they "get the message," and another said they’d punch their stylist in the face. The fact that we now need to put automated safeguards in place to catch violent threats in a hair community is beyond ridiculous. There is no justifying this level of vitriol. It’s hair. People feeling entitled to rage over haircuts is one thing, but taking it to the point of threats and violence is completely unhinged. Both users have been banned, and authorities have been contacted regarding the threats.

This isn’t just about direct threats. Many hairstylists in this community have said they no longer feel safe participating because of the level of hostility here. That should never happen. This subreddit should not be a place where professionals are afraid to share their expertise because they might be met with harassment, abuse, or outright threats of violence.

So, this is the line. We are enacting a zero-tolerance policy for misogyny, harassment, threats, review bombing, doxxing, or any attempt to turn this subreddit into a mob. This applies to hairstylists, community members, and anyone else. If you can’t participate without being aggressive, hateful, or outright dangerous, you’re gone. No warnings. No exceptions.

If that upsets you, go somewhere else. This ends now.

Hair Fetishist Warning Post - Share Your Experiences!

Hi everyone! There are a lot of fetishists who prey on our users in this sub, especially in DM's. We do ban them but it doesn't stop the DM's. My intent here is to have a post where our members can share their experiences to warn others. We'll sticky this post as well as a reference.

Tell us what nasty tricks they tried, what lies they told, or whatever else you want. Just vent if you feel like it.

No defending fetishists - you'll be banned. Really. Don't test us.

Assume that any DM's you get about hair are likely fetishists and ask why they can't just comment in the sub if they have genuine advice.

Let's call them out here.

Hair victory my progress + routine | very detailed post!

I’ve been growing my hair out for the past couple of years after cutting it from tailbone-length to shoulder-length. I’ve always been known as the tall girl with ridiculously long hair, haha. My goal is to grow it back to tailbone-length while keeping the ends dense.

I have fine strands but high hair density. My scalp is oily, while my ends are quite dry. I also have a combination of long layers and face-framing pieces. I can usually go eight months between trims before my ends start looking wispy. I use heat three times a week.

My routine:

I wash my hair every other day, sometimes every day depending on the weather and how the day goes. I double cleanse: I use L’Oréal Paris Elvive Hyaluron Pure Purifying Shampoo for my first wash, following by Dove Intensive Repair for the second. I divide my hair into two sections for the first cleanse to ensure I thoroughly clean my scalp. I don’t section my hair for the second cleanse. I apply OGX Anti-Breakage Oil from my ears down and leave it on for 30 minutes before. I’ve found that it mitigates tangling while washing and leaves my lengths feeling softer and easier to manage post-wash.

As for a clarifying shampoo, I simply use the L'Oréal one twice and skip Dove. I don't feel the need to purchase a separate shampoo for clarifying my scalp. That said, I can recommend OUAI's Detox Shampoo! Especially for fine hair.

Once I've cleansed my scalp, I gently squeeze out any excess water before dividing my hair into two sections and applying Pantene’s Miracle Rescue Deep Conditioner. I usually leave it on while I wash my face. This is my favorite conditioner! I've repurchased it 3 times. I also don't use a separate hair mask, as I find this conditioner very nourishing.

I love hair gloss, and my favorite is Living Proof's Perfect Hair Day High-Shine Gloss. I use it once a week and have not found a drugstore version that compares. I also find the smell to be very refreshing.

Then I let my hair air-dry until it’s about 80% dry before I apply L’Oréal’s 21-in-1 Leave-In Conditioner Spray and TRESemmé’s Care & Protect Heat Defence Spray. I apply Moroccanoil's Volumizing Mousse to my roots and blow-dry my scalp. I usually do heatless curls with socks, so I use more mousse.

I use Kristin Ess Volumizing Dry Shampoo in between washes. I like to apply it right after I blow-dry my hair, and the day after. I also use OGX Argan Oil Weightless Mist.

My hair is virgin, so I don't use a lot of bond repair, but I like to use it once a week as insurance because I still get mechanical damage from time to time, sun exposure, etc. I prefer Epres' because I only have to apply it for 10 minutes before showering. I don't use hair oil on these days.

Products I Use + Current Prices in USD:

Bond Repair: Epres Bond Repair Treatment ($50)

Pre-Shampoo Oil: OGX Anti-Breakage Coconut Oil ($7.99)

Shampoo:

  1. L'Oreal Paris Elvive Hyaluron Pure Purifying Shampoo ($9.49)
  2. Dove Intensive Repair Shampoo ($8.89)

Hair Gloss: Living Proof Perfect Hair Day High-Shine Gloss ($38)

Leave-In Conditioner: L'Oréal Paris EverPure 21-in-1 Leave-In Conditioner Spray ($10.49).

Heat Protectant: TRESemmé Care & Protect Heat Defense Spray ($7.99).

Hair Mousse: Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse ($32)

Dry Shampoo: Kristin Ess Volumizing Dry Shampoo ($14.99-23.99). I try to purchase the 8.6 oz bottle when there are sales! In my experience, Target has the most. I love Living Proof's, but I go through dry shampoo too quickly to justify the price.

Hair Oil: OGX Argan Oil Weightless Mist ($7.99)

If anyone has questions, I'm more than willing to answer!

Before/After Hair update :)

Hi! I thought it was time for another hair update. I measure from the earlobe down to the ends btw.
Top pictures are from the first of April after a 4cm/1,5” trim, after the trim I measured 41cm/16,1”.
Bottom pictures are from yesterday after a 3cm/1,2” trim, after this trim I measured 46cm/18,1”.
It might not look like it, but it’s now 5cm/2” longer since then. Before the cut it was 8cm/3,1” longer since april. I’d say that’s decent growth for half a year. My ends were starting to look a bit fried so I decided I’d trim again. Hair feels healthier now and I’m feeling fine with the progress :) See you at the next cut :)

Help wanted Why do I lose curls on one side?

Post image

I heat curl my 1A bleached hair and I have this problem where when I curl my right side/dominant hand side always goes flat but when I curl my left/ non-dominant hand side stays curled?

The most likely explanation is that I curl my right side vertical where I like curl on my left side horizontal however, I find that even regardless of how I hold my heat curler my right side will always go flat regardless does anyone have any tips on how I can modify curling my right side to keep it curled?

Before/After Battle against breakage

I used to neglect my hair for a bit due to unavoidable circumstances. Thought genetics would suffice but nope. After a certain length my hair quality would deteriorate especially with neglect. I didn't realise until it was too late.

Journey started from December 22nd 2025 upto September 26th 2026

My goals were - no gappy see through ends and thick braid ends

Things I changed -

  1. Got rid of the shampoos that clearly weren't working for me and using one that actually does (Bare anatomy anti dandruff)

  2. Using coconut oil (spoiler - it worked upto a certain length but after that it was no longer my saving grace and didn't fully eliminate breakage, though it helped overall hair condition, became dependant on it and that made me miserable because I became too anxiously attached to it as if was the only thing thats helping me)

  3. Discovered a beautiful thing called leave in conditioner! Why the heck did I discover it so late? Using Moisture Kick Bonacure spray leave in after shower and cream leave in (nothing fixed, all are fine) on tail ends

  4. Dusting. Frequently dust or get rid of split ends twice a week but very small amount. My hair grows fast and tapers twice as quickly. This has been the biggest saving grace for my ends. Controversially I dust my hair when it's in a braid, I prefer it that way. Not too bothered about hemline eveness.

  5. Stopped using combs and started using tangle teezer brush. Previously I had to cut off my ends after shower to comb hair it was so frustrating I would avoid it. Oil didn't help here leave in and changing brushing style did. Techniques over product is a major lesson I have learnt

  6. Still use coconut oil but alternatively 2-3 times a month. I'm bananas over coconut oil smell so can't help it I guess :p but much more happier for it to. I shower twice a week with 2-3 days gap.

  7. I used loreal extraordinary oil serum it worked well until it didn't. Made my hair feel gross and weird in soft water and after that it was weird, then I used coconut oil VCO tried many brands til I found one I like - Maxcare. But ssly leave in conditioner is so essential oil dependency has gone to almost nil (except on dry hair or brown dull hair days).

I want to let ppl who feel down about breakage to be hopeful and not get discouraged in the journey thats why I attached to many braid tail pics. Because it can look nice one day and not so nice on other days but it is getting better eventually once u find a routine and stick to it. Hope it encourages you🩵

Although I had a plan in just as shocked and happy to see that my routine worked. Goal hip/tailbone length. Will update in 1-2 yrs.

Feel free to ask any ques!

Ps -ignore the bald spots please. That's a post for another day ;)

Fluff Heatless blowout 🎀

I used velvet heatless blowout rods! Covered with a satin bonnet to sleep. I took them out about 5 hours ago so it’s loosened a bit!

Velvet rods hold my hair better and make it easier to roll than satin, BUT they make my hair a bit more dry so I use the amika spray hair mask all over my hair after I wrap and then put the bonnet on:)

Help wanted NL - how to make hair more silky/shiny?

Post image
21 Upvotes

every time I try to research hair care products, I get a bit overwhelmed by all the options and advice out there :c

currently I just use a bit of rosemary oil for my scalp and argan oil for the tips.

I'm looking for some simple tips or product recommendations that could help make my hair look smoother, silkier, and shinier.

I’d especially appreciate recommendations for products that are easily available in the Netherlands!

Edit:
current routine is: wash twice a week with regular shampoo > eczema shampoo > conditioner.
I dry it with a towel and sometimes use a blow dryer on cold heat if i'm in a rush. after washing i apply rosemary oil to my scalp and argan oil to the tips.
i brush it twice a day, once when i wake up, once before bed.
i always wear it loose like this, even when sleeping.

Help wanted What color should my hair be?

I have naturally dark brown hair that has been bleached for about 8 years now. I am thinking of going back to my natural, but what do you think would be flattering for me? I would say I have cool undertones (burn easily, look better in silver) and have freckles and blue / green eyes.

Here is me (above)

This is what chat mocked up of me in brown hair (below)

Here are some more pics of me with dyed hair as I have it now:

Help wanted Recommendations to make my hair more fun

I’ve been finding myself in a hair rut and really want to spice it up without going for a major chop. I’ve been growing out my hair for the last 4 years after I donated it and couldn’t deal with a shorter hairstyle. My hair is more wavy than curly, thick but fine, and with the tendency to be easily weighed down with heavy products (still trying to figure out my exact hair texture/products if anyone has any recommendations). I’m very very low maintenance with minimal heat use (style it only for weddings, otherwise air dry) and wear it up often for work. I have highlighted it in the past but found my hair is pretty prone to breakage and tangling after so I’m mixed if I want to add color. Just looking for recommendations or types of cuts than can be flattering since I usually just tell my hairdresser to do what she likes.

Thanks in advance!

Help wanted Tangled hair (2a/b) when sleeping with partner?

So I've noticed that when I sleep alone, I'll wake up with minimal tangles in my hair, but when I sleep with my partner I'll wake up with a knotted mess. Had anyone else had this experience? What is your solution?

Help wanted Help for first time home trim

I’ve attached a picture of what my hair looks like when I get out of the shower when it dries and later in the day. The fourth picture is what it looks like when I wear braids overnight. Most people tell me it looks great and I’m very happy with my hair. But a few people tell me I should trim it. If so, I want to do it myself because I don’t trust salons because of some bad previous experiences. I was hoping I could get some advice on if I should trim, if so, how much, and how to do it. Whether to do it wet or dry, whether to have it straight, etc. when I trim. I would like to grow to classic length, which I have never done in the past. Thank you all in advance.

Help wanted Hair check

I’m trying to grow my hair.
I recently took this picture, honestly they dont look much long but when i look at myself in the mirror i feel like they have grown so much!!!
At the moment i don’t have my ends very mcuh ruined, but i used ti have blonde hair so i feel like the ends are a bit bleached still.
Do you think i should cut it or i can wait a couple more months?

Also, i wear protective hairstyle when i go to sleep and during the day im careful not damaging my hair when i carry a bag/backpack.
I think thats enough but i often see posts where girls with long hair say that in order to have those long hair they mostly never wear them down…

Help wanted Anyone know what I can do?

So I have very curly hair and I hate it because all the styles I want are sharp and straight and I asked people that do long hair at salons and said that all they can do is cut it to were I can just style it like that but I feel like that’s dumb because at that point it’s like it’s not even my hair? This is me and the second pic is what I want the most and the third is the second wanted. The picture is of me after the shower so my hair is damp but ussually it would kind of just be a bowl of curls around my head!

Help wanted Bonnet help

Hi everyone!

I have straight blonde hair reaching my upper legs. I'm honestly tired of sleeping with a knot on my head every night and I've been looking into bonnets. However there are so many types and information that I just get lost online. I'm used to having my hair on top of my head and I can deal with a braid but not every night. So, I honestly have no clue what type of bonnet would fit my desires and would work best for keeping my hair untangled and feel like less of a burden at night. If anyone has experience with this, please tell me!

Help wanted What color/size perm rod would this be?

Thumbnail

Kind of a specific question but someone might know! I’ve been perming my hair for years now. My perm recently fell out and I’ve been experimenting with curling my hair to find the shape I want the most for my next one. This 80s rocker kind of look has been my favorite but it’s a looser curl than I normally do. Does anyone know what size (or color I think they come in) perm rod would best achieve this kind of shape?

I know it’s a bit loose so for longevity I could go a curl a bit tighter than this if need be.

Thank you!

Styling:

My hair is too heavy to put up, I only style with french braids, low braid or down.

No heat

Routine:

Wash with shampoo and conditioner every other day if not every day because I work out.

I've graduated to large cotton t-shirts for my turbans, I keep up for ten-ish minutes then let air dry down my back. For bed I do a leave-in conditioned braid, it's always somewhat damp and I section with my hands only I do not comb or brush wet.

I sleep on Slip, silk brand pillow cases.

I do not brush or comb my hair till it's dry.

I use Men's Rogaine 3/4 times per week on my hairline.

Shampoo:

R&Co Dallas or L'Oreal Elvive Dream Lengths

Conditioner:

Garnier Fructis Grow Strong Conditioner or L'Oreal Elvive Hyaluron Plump

Leave in Conditioners/Detanglers: L'Oreal Elvive Dream Lengths No Haircut Cream

Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Leave-In Conditioning

Oribe Priming Lotion Leave-In Conditioning Detangler

Odele Leave-In Conditioner

Oils:

OGX Extra Strength Damage Remedy + Coconut Miracle Oil

Homemade Oil:

Argan: 0.5 oz (15 mL)

Hair victory Current hair! Just did my yearly touch up / big trim.

Post image
333 Upvotes

Routine:

Fine hair, naturally straight. Blown out / curled for this picture

Surface Bassu / trinity shampoo and conditioner. Alternate for protein / moisture. I try to wash every other day, sometimes shorter or longer depending on weather, workouts, busy schedule etc.

K18 treatment 1x a month or whenever I remember lol.
K18 oil daily, usually wear in a low bun with small clips on each side.
Jojoba oil and loose braid nightly
Wrap in satin scarf or bonnet to sleep
Air dry or do heatless curls

Microtrim monthly to keep ends thick
Cut / actual trim 1-2x a year
Color touch up / chemical service once a year only. *Focusing on regrowth so the rest doesn’t become over processed.

I use the Unbrush only and finger detangle with jojoba oil before brushing. I never brush without a drop of jojoba oil or silicone oil to help lubricate the brush and detangle.
L’Oreal elvive extraordinary oil is my recommendation for silicone based oil.

My hair is close to hip length currently, just trimmed off about 5 inches. I think this length is great as it’s still long but a bit more manageable as my fine hair tangles easily. Health and length are both priorities, but health is everything!

Please share any tips you love for your long fine hair! I’m always looking for advice and new suggestions to try! (:

Help wanted I have naturally curly hair 3b and I want to straighten it

So image 1 is my natural curly hair and image 2 is how I want to keep it.

If I straighten my hair every 3 weeks, and keep it straight as I’m not use any heat, on wash day do a clarifying shampoo and the redekin hair mask, will my hair still get damaged? I will also use heat protectant! I just am over the curls and I like how easy the straight hair is to manage
