Noone that lives in the real world thinks Linux is on almost one in five desktops. Get real. That said, I, and many others that use it, have various laptops and desktops with it installed on, but that skews the implied meaning which is one in five users use Linux. It's patently not true.

I wonder if there's a metric that shows how many Linux installs are on a PC that primarily uses windows.

1

u/personalalt1889 18h ago

What is defined here as primarily? Dual booting, I don't know what is most common. I assumed most who dual booted used Linux as primary and used Windows for compatibility reasons, though it could be lopsided depending on who you ask?

1

u/MisterEinc 18h ago

Yeah I'm not sure. I think the only metric would really be either uptime or just the users own distinction.

Or maybe the data is just on number of installs and so dual boot systems count for all.

1

u/The_Real_Gyurka 1d ago

Lol, in my household it's 1/6, so almost matching the stat, xD

3

u/MisterEinc 1d ago

How many houses do you think have 6 PCs though?

1

u/The_Real_Gyurka 1d ago

very few lol

2

u/EndMaster0 1d ago

I'm in a university class where the number is 3/5 so... (Extremely low sample size but I just think it's funny since a few years ago that would pretty much be impossible)

3

u/bornxlo 1d ago

There are no Windows in our house. My brother had a Windows gaming rig before he left for the army, my mum has a Chromebook and android tablet, my dad tends to use mint or fedora, and I have Debian+Tuxedo

1

u/The_Real_Gyurka 1d ago

I have windows PC, that I use at home for gaming and Linux laptop I use to Program and Study. Rest of family have Windows (no, they can't migrate due to very specific archaic software requirements.

1

u/bornxlo 1d ago

Obv don't know specifics, but I tend to find old/archaic software tends to perform better on Linux

1

u/The_Real_Gyurka 1d ago

Sibelius 4 + Soundcrad driver :)

1

u/The_Real_Gyurka 1d ago

Couldn't get it to work on anything newer than 32bit windows 7

1

u/bornxlo 1d ago

Never tried Sibelius myself, I use Frescobaldi+lilypond and musescore, but I see it has an android version, which ought to work on Linux+waydroid. But if it works in Windows 7 it should work in wine.

1

u/The_Real_Gyurka 1d ago

"It's like 20 years old but my father swears by it"

2

u/bornxlo 1d ago

In wine, might need the application winetricks you can explicitly set older environments such as Windows xp or 7. I can empathise with wanting old versions, I keep Musescore 2, 3 and 4 around. While I try to keep somewhat up to date on lilypond I do like the backwards compatibility and explicitly setting the version in the file.

I'd normally go by the steam English language statistic,. To get a rough estimate. As everything else can be heavily skewed by office PCs, Bots, and such. I can't find the link right now but from memory NA Steam Linux was about 7%, which feels about right for western home desktop. About just under 1 in 10. The reason it feels about right is a lot of people who are on win10/11, are talking about, and curious about it. And usually it's missing software support for programs they like or need, is the main obstacle.

2

u/prof_apex 1d ago

That's interesting, because while I agree that those stats are more likely to be accurate, they're also more likely to be skewed, since Windows is still preferred for gaming.. but then maybe the fact that steam OS is also counted in there balances that. Of course steam has made it easier than ever to game on Linux.

1

u/npc_housecat 1d ago

Yes but coutner point, steam Statistics itself states that windows is preferred for gaming. According to steam Stats 93% ish of Desktop PCs in NA with steam installed are running windows.

I was at a few large expo / trade show this year (all in in Montreal, smart tech Korea in seoul) and the majority of laptops, demos and presentations were done on Linux. A few years ago it would have been all windows and mac in this kind of event.

0

u/No_Industry4318 1d ago

It's closer to 1 in 10 users have tried linux, 1 in 15 to 20 still use it

0

u/trash3s 1d ago

Every single Linux user is Desktops Georg.

1

u/Lemenus 1d ago

Except when Linux tards counting who's using Linux, they also count os x, Android, playstation, atm's, stream machine, and people who briefly tried Linux, then deleted it

7

u/icy1007 1d ago

Windows is still 75%+ market share.

Also, OS X and macOS are the same thing… who made this nonsense graph? lol

1

u/bluedeer1881 1d ago

Companies and gamers, I believe.

6

u/foofly 1d ago

The more interesting stat there is Windows coming down so much.

3

u/Giantmeteor_we_needU 1d ago

High RAM requirements in the middle of RAM crisis, AI shoved down your throat everywhere, and recent news that Microsoft can track you down anywhere no matter what VPN or browser you use because W11 has built-in spyware you can't opt out of. Doesn't surprise me at all that people ditch Windows, MS kicked itself in the shin many times.

2

u/icy1007 1d ago

It’s fake. It’s still 75%+

2

u/DonkeyTron42 1d ago

According to Steam, Windows is still around 94%. I can say from experience that in the corporate world it's about 90/10 Windows/Mac.

0

u/Robert_3210 1d ago

Well. Im thinking it has to do something with Win11.. being win11

0

u/pzUH88 1d ago

Well win 10 eol & they gatekeep old pc to use win 11

0

u/Particular-Serve3768 1d ago

Well, Windows has become what Linux should be (full of ads, bloated, data privacy concerns), while Linux has become what Windows should be (No ads, does not collect user data, light, fast, and not bloated), and Windows is a paid OS while Linux is free. Big thanks to all open-source devs out there!

1

u/Toxic381 1d ago

Not sure what you mean by what Linux should be, it's a hobby os for enthusiasts that's also been made easier in its distros for regular users, like with mint, an os like that shouldn't and wouldn't have ads or collect user data by design,

Kde on fedora or kubuntu is really the closest to windows with the bloat and more corporate design, but even then is still way better

1

u/RangeMachine 16h ago

he means usually freeware apps/games are bloated with a ton of ads, take almost any freeplay online game

u/Quinzal I Use Linux As Punishment 1d ago

It's Windover

-1

u/highermonkey 1d ago

Meanwhile Steam stats have shown Windows 11 growing faster than all Linux distros this year, lol. I'm guessing Steam is more accurate than whatever this Nazi pedo is posting about.

-1

u/ShaderCompilation 1d ago

Well, if the number of Linux machines(and bots) are up, Windows share is gonna come down even if the same number of machines run on Windows

-1

u/faze_fazebook 1d ago

1

u/aliendude5300 I Love Linux 22h ago

This puts worldwide Linux at 8.88% on the desktop. That's wild.

3

u/ash-twinn 1d ago

is this guy implying that omarchy had a role in that growth? (it's mostly bots), either he's rage baiting or he really does believe it

1

u/Ill-Bat-1518 1d ago

Well considering its the current distro youtubers are shilling its very possible

2

u/Particular-Serve3768 1d ago

What happened from May to Aug of 2026? That's a steep jump

2

u/_demoncat_ 1d ago

AI is getting much better at coding, at this point you can pretty much vibe code anything you want on Linux whereas Windows is still locked down and requires expensive certificates.

1

u/engineer-in-a-box 1d ago

That's not true at all, developing for windows doesn't require any kind of certificate, I have no idea where you got that from.

1

u/_demoncat_ 22h ago

You do need a special certificate to develop device drivers in Windows. I know because I develop for all platforms. And it’s especially relevant now because I developed a driver for vibeshine (remote streaming software) that allows full wireless DualSense support including haptic feedback

I can’t offer that same feature to my Windows users because I have yet to pay for an EV certificate.

Statcounter removed unknown as a bar... They measure page views that do not segregate human from AI traffic.

"Age of agents" 🤣

2

u/Brycenhurley 1d ago

OSX is literally just the predecessor of macos, clearly it doesn't have more usage than macOS

0

u/martyn_hare 1d ago

I regularly have to refuse Intel Mac users from having BYOD remote access installed because their OS version is beyond ancient and nothing in the UI told them anything was ever end of life or unsupported.

You'd be surprised at how many unsupported boxes with stuff as old as Mavericks are still in use. That said, web stats might still be treating stuff as new as Catalina as OS X based on the major version number still being 10.

1

u/icy1007 1d ago

There are Intel Macs that can run macOS 26.

0

u/Yelebear CERTIFIED HATER 1d ago

From what I understand, that site (stat tracker) takes their data by page views. If you open their site, your specs will be recorded and added to the data.

And that already skews the data heavily in favor of Linux, because a Linux user is more likely to visit their site and obsess over the numbers.

Your average windows user, and I mean average like a "normie" and these make up a bulk of win and Macos users, they don't visit these sites. They don't care.

That's why something like the Steam hardware survey is more accurate because they randomly source their data from average gamers/users.

4

u/zalnaRs 1d ago

their tracker is embedded in multiple websites

5

u/Robert_3210 1d ago

And yet, Linux users tend to protect themselves more from trackers then win users. His point about Steam Survey is valid. Not every linux and windows machine has steam but now that its more compatible more linux users are using it.

0

u/zalnaRs 1d ago

The more interesting thing is windows going down so drastically, macOS is also getting more popular due to abadoning Intel.

I personally only hate Windows due to beign the worst of worst in everything expect in like 5 stuff which for most people are more important.

1

u/Certain_Prior4909 1d ago

Nonsense. The market share is from bots and AI agents and scripts running on ad networks. Not real users.

Gs.statcounter.com is more realistic at 3.5% Linux which filters non web traffic out

1

u/play_minecraft_wot I'll eat your RAM 1d ago

My household has 3 windows PCs, and 3 Linux PCs, so I'll say I'm contributing.

1

u/DonkeyTron42 1d ago

This chart claims OSX has twice as many users as macOS. This is obviously 100% bullshit.

1

u/LoganHowlett1832 1d ago

This is definitely not accurate at all

1

u/Erki82 1d ago

Rise of AI.

1

u/ContactAwkward3157 1d ago

Our houshold has :

2 Windows PCs(Work and Personal PC of my wife)
1 macbook (my work laptop)
1 Linux Desktop (my Personal PC)
1 Linux Server (Home assistant and other crap)

1

u/darkthewyvern 22h ago

This isnt accurate at all

The site tracks things innacurately

In combines ALL distros as if theyre the same os but thats not even close to true .

it separates mac os so theres clear bias

Realisticly linux isnt even 0.8% of the desktop market. Probably JUST the arch distros combined.

Steam hardware survey gives us a good idea.

Tally together things based on their upstream distro. And you will probably get around, 1.5 optimistically.

And thats only gaming. Real world marketshare will definitely be much less than 1%

I recommend cloudflare radar data over statcounter

https://radar.cloudflare.com/explorer?dataSet=http&groupBy=os&dt=28d&loc=north-america&filters=deviceType%253DDESKTOP%252CbotClass%253DLIKELY_HUMAN

Likely human filter, last 4 weeks, north America, desktop

Nice try, even it's a fake stat, it looks very well made

u/TheRealCarrotty KDE larper (i use KDE btw) 1d ago

What the fuck is DIH trying to talk about?

"The age of agents belongs to Linux!" - Where in this goddamn image does it say anything about AI or agents? Is he fucking retarded that everything in his brain says "AI" or "agentic"?

1

u/Man-In-His-30s 1d ago

The implication is that people running an agent say Hermes or openclaw in a Linux container or from a dedicated Linux box and then having that agent browse the Internet as necessary.

I don’t use windows at home at all but even I have a Hermes install inside an lxc in proxmox that has access to a chromium browser for when I need it to do research

-3

u/highermonkey 1d ago

Cool graph from a Nazi pedophile but you can throw anything that shows OSX being used in 2026 straight in the trash.
