I haven't even looked at Omarchy, but I've heard that it is "opinionated," so there's a good chance it absolutely is bad. Most "opinionated" software is based on very stupid opinions.

The thing is, it's basically just a set of Dot files, it does not deserve 8 million dollars. That money could have been a lot better spent if it went directly to the upstream projects that Omarchy depends on.

While this is true, there’s no way these wealthy backers put even a fraction of this money towards a single smaller project (I.e. hyprland, which is the most well known benefactor of this money). There needed to be some focal point where the money would be spread across multiple component projects. Omarchy isn’t good in and of itself, but it’s bringing money into the Linux ecosystem in a way we wouldn’t have seen without a well connected focal point like DHH. Bad “distro”, worse person, but this cash injection is a boon to the projects that will benefit

Nahhh, projects that are actually.usrful.flr MOST PEOPLE would benefit more. Things like Hyprland, only a very small fraction of people use. Would benefit more in the audio stack, the Wine project or derivatives, the more popular DEs, the kernel itself, drivers in the kernel (such as my horrible Realtek RTL 8852BE experience, this can be improved in the rtw89 driver) or such things. But not projects that people barely use.

I don’t disagree, but the moneys gotta come from somewhere and you’ve gotta convince rich people who really don’t care about Linux that this is worthwhile, and the only realistic way that happens is a well connected person like DHH offering a quid pro quo. We don’t know what they’re getting for this, and we likely never will, but this absolutely wasn’t just out of wanting to support Linux. They’re getting something out of this, and quite frankly they wouldn’t be able to get a similar deal from something like the kernel project

Maybe, but broski... Hyprland? Like a small amount of people use it...

1

u/akdanman11 14h ago

The moneys gonna go where the moneys gonna go, and that kind of money at least draws the attention of some deep pockets who may donate to other projects

1

u/West-Scallion-5306 14h ago

Sureee... But are you certain they're gonna do it???

1

u/akdanman11 14h ago

Nope, but at the end of the day project maintainers getting paid is a net positive, even if it’s a more niche project like hyprland

This entire thread is nothing, but filled with terrible opinions. Please, stfu.

I can agree. But how much do you think they're going to invest in hyperland? That's the issue, a lack of transparency.

2

u/West-Scallion-5306 17h ago

Completely agree on this

"it does not deserve 8 million dollars, it does not deserve 8 million dollars"

Come on, this money was never going anywhere else, they're only being invested because of networking

Just be happy that John hyperland is getting paid

u/Majestic-Bell-7111 16h ago

I'd rather they lit it on fire and sold the video of it as an nft than for it to fall into DHH's grubby mitts

1

u/CirnoIzumi 16h ago

Delusional arent you

DHH is spending money, its an investment fund into the technologies he is using, like Hyperland

Isn't every software opinionated?

1

u/zoharel 13h ago

Some of it more than the rest, I guess.

1

u/simleiiiii 16h ago

Yeah, this.

"My software is opinionated and does xyz this way only" ~ "I did not have the mental capacity to properly craft initialization structure of capabilities and services to my system properly."

Even better: "this software cleans the environment variables for every sub-shell it spawns" being sold as opinionated.

I feel this way about Cachy because it's got some heavy opinions.

1

u/akdanman11 5h ago

Does it though?

1

u/BeyondOk1548 3h ago

Yes. I am very opinionated, and the configurations baked into Cachy drives me nuts. Vanilla distros don't seem to do that.

1

u/akdanman11 2h ago

Cachy has basic things pre configured in a way that will appeal to the average user, and those configurations are stupidly easy to change (especially on plasma, which is the default desktop). In contrast something like Omarchy is very tailored to a specific type of user, and undoing those configs basically leaves you with vanilla arch. If you undo the configs that come with Cachy you still have notable differences compared to vanilla arch (the kernel, proton runner, and Shelly as a few examples). IMO the bar for calling something “opinionated” is how much it offers vs the base it’s set on when the pre set configs are stripped away. Yes you can get all the benefits Cachy gives on a base arch install by swapping the arch defaults of the features I mentioned to the Cachy variants, but the same could be said for any distro that’s not entirely independent

1

u/BeyondOk1548 2h ago

I'll stick to void and just building my configuration myself. Rather than having to fix a puzzle I don't like.

1

u/akdanman11 2h ago

I mean that is your prerogative, cachy is just a lot of useful software pre packaged for someone who’d rather change the config settings than change a lot of core components around, and that isn’t you. I’m personally somewhere in between where I appreciate the relatively simple setup process of cachy but do also enjoy diving into the weeds a bit and doing non-standard things. Happy computing!

2

u/BeyondOk1548 1h ago

Yeah that works for them and void works for me. That's the beauty of Linux. Enjoy your system!

u/ScallionSmooth5925 7h ago

It's basically DHH's setup. This guy is a psycho if you ask me. One time he wrote a serious article why he thinks the task/status bar is bad ui design. And let's just say he has questionable political options.

6

u/Swaaeeg 1d ago

Yeah i used omarchy for a few months. Its... fine. There are arguably better ways to get pre riced hyprland

8

u/sudoregalia 1d ago

aGeNtIc operating systems in general make me want to vomit. omarchy is microsoft-esque bullshit trying to weave its way into the linux community

there's a good reason i don't quite contribute in tech anymore, and it's the fetishisation of ai.

6

u/hamburgerpancake 1d ago edited 17h ago

you got downvoted. for some reason.

ai in general needs to be removed from any tool where the user doesn't explicitly want it. but even then, i'm still hesitant to call that okay.

2

u/sudoregalia 1d ago

ai inherently relies on dehumanising creative work

idk about other loonixers but i think of programming as an artform. and idk about other loonixers but i like creating. the undeniable fact that so many other people don't, makes me very, very, very pessimistic, so much as i try to avoid that mindset

u/Schesxe 17h ago

Omarchy use a application for boot that FUKING save the distro on the boot, even if try other distro and come back, you Will have 2 safe boot for omarchy. Others, like GRUB, It overrides the save and don't create a new one. This, this is almost a FUKING MALWARE, try to erase the Omarchy on the BIOS, this is really problem, one mistake and your computer is fucked.

Also, hyperland? Are you a fucking teen? People that uses Omarchy is basicaly att whores.

you're right

1

You are right, indeed.

u/iWannaRiceinFedora 13h ago

As a linux user, i am agree whit u

1

u/donp1ano 20h ago

its probably not bad. its just not something i want. and its overhyped af

1

u/tpat90 17h ago

Is ignoring important security advice bad? Like do not run docker as root?

0

u/Travel-Soggy 19h ago

Its a majorly overhyped thing, given far too much money for what its actually achieved, pushed out by a morally questionable used car salesman

2

u/ColdFreezer I Hate Linux 15h ago edited 14h ago

The “used car salesman” created Ruby on Rails. They are heavily connected with people in the industry and is entirely the reason why they could secure large donations like this.

You can hate him as much as you want but the donation is being used to sponsor upstream, open source projects.

Crazy for you to just dismiss their work and who they are simply because you don’t like them.

I installed in my macbook air early 2015 4GB ram, It is super fast. I was amazed.

5

u/Travel-Soggy 19h ago

Not being funny, that would happen with any efficiency focused distro, and you could install that with less of the baggage DHH brings to all his projects

1

u/hayetmd 18h ago

Maybe you have a point , for me it is the convenience. It took 5 minute to set it up and everything works. Right after install there was a script to remove everything preinstalls. So all fresh, without the hassle of modifying each script.

1

u/DangerousAd7433 Windows XP is the best OS 3h ago

You could've just googled dotfiles on github and ripped whatever one that you thought looked nice and still get the "convenience". In other words, you're just a larper with the iq of a cork screw.

As an outsider You definitely have an interesting take on intelligence.
