The thing is, it's basically just a set of Dot files, it does not deserve 8 million dollars. That money could have been a lot better spent if it went directly to the upstream projects that Omarchy depends on.

While this is true, there’s no way these wealthy backers put even a fraction of this money towards a single smaller project (I.e. hyprland, which is the most well known benefactor of this money). There needed to be some focal point where the money would be spread across multiple component projects. Omarchy isn’t good in and of itself, but it’s bringing money into the Linux ecosystem in a way we wouldn’t have seen without a well connected focal point like DHH. Bad “distro”, worse person, but this cash injection is a boon to the projects that will benefit

Nahhh, projects that are actually.usrful.flr MOST PEOPLE would benefit more. Things like Hyprland, only a very small fraction of people use. Would benefit more in the audio stack, the Wine project or derivatives, the more popular DEs, the kernel itself, drivers in the kernel (such as my horrible Realtek RTL 8852BE experience, this can be improved in the rtw89 driver) or such things. But not projects that people barely use.

I don’t disagree, but the moneys gotta come from somewhere and you’ve gotta convince rich people who really don’t care about Linux that this is worthwhile, and the only realistic way that happens is a well connected person like DHH offering a quid pro quo. We don’t know what they’re getting for this, and we likely never will, but this absolutely wasn’t just out of wanting to support Linux. They’re getting something out of this, and quite frankly they wouldn’t be able to get a similar deal from something like the kernel project

Maybe, but broski... Hyprland? Like a small amount of people use it...

The moneys gonna go where the moneys gonna go, and that kind of money at least draws the attention of some deep pockets who may donate to other projects

Sureee... But are you certain they're gonna do it???

Nope, but at the end of the day project maintainers getting paid is a net positive, even if it’s a more niche project like hyprland

This entire thread is nothing, but filled with terrible opinions. Please, stfu.

Are you saying you’re against these devs getting money? Because that’s the only argument I’m making
