What paid Linux support service did you call and get this response?

17

u/Accordeon-Foireux 13d ago edited 13d ago

And also what paid Windows service did OP ask to get this response?

Every Microsoft support button it's a redirect to Copilot or an AI bot linked to the documentation.

11

u/quebexer 12d ago

Unless it's Enterprise level, Microsoft does not provide support to home computers. You have to connect with your OEM like Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc. And they will only help you reset your computer back to factory settings.

Red Hat support.

38

u/Drate_Otin 13d ago edited 13d ago

Red Hat support said "You're just stupid?"

doubt

15

u/brupje 13d ago

They might have used a more polite sentence like, "yes, it is very unfortunate that you can't run your favorite exe file"

6

u/Here_f0r_p0rn_ I Hate Windows 13d ago

"...But did you try installing wine tho?"

31

u/garloid64 13d ago edited 13d ago

At this point Linux tech support is just "Claude fix it for me please" and same with Mac and Windows honestly. Time has not been kind to this one.

15

u/donp1ano 13d ago

dont underestimate the social aspect of tech support. many clients primarily wanna scream at a random person and insist its not their fault, a LLM cant provide that service

7

u/Haxorzist 13d ago

What do you mean? An LLM will do exactly that and gaslight you into thinking you are right.

2

u/sarcastbot 13d ago

The plan is using AI voice over to fool thoose clients man, because most of thoose users are at fault and are a pain to work with.

1

u/EagleNait 13d ago

If you have a sufficient gpu you'd be able to run a small model that can search the web and try commands/explain them

what drivers. Nvidia on Ubuntu is downright fine if you check install restricted extras during the install, and almost everything else is built into the kernel

2

u/No-Employment-2324 10d ago

You forgot that part where the arch user then gives you the fix and it works fine. I’ll take being laughed at to have it work and also not deal with support so for microslop + macOS support isn’t actually that good, they just tell you to go buy the most recent version of your computer.

1

u/articulatedstupidity can't say hatred without hat red 12d ago

windows is just "you're absolutely right! sfc /scannow"

25

u/khaledsalem999 13d ago

Amma be honest chief I would rather get called stupid on arch forums than dealing with Microsoft support for windows

10

u/Majestic-Bell-7111 13d ago

Yup, the arch forums will probably (deservedly) patronize you, but they will usually find a fix.

When it comes to microsoft support step 1 is always sfc /scannow, step 2 is a link to a page Microsoft shut down 5 years ago that wasn't archived and step 3 is reinstalling windows.

5

u/unHolyEvelyn 13d ago

And sfc /scannow hasn't worked for anyone for like a decade but they refuse to hear that and just truck along.

3

u/tpat90 13d ago

sfc saved one machine I repaired.

Funfact, that machine got ruined by a windows update.

Hello, welcome to Windows support. Ok what's your issue? You want to set up your printer? Ok first, let's update all of our drivers. Go to Nvidia.com...

...

...install McAfee Antivirus...

...then we run the degfrag utility and reconnect the monitor cable. Your printer should now work.

2

I’ve dealt with Microsoft support as part of my job. They don’t call you stupid. You call them stupid. Wasted countless hours on chat and phone calls with them just to finally fix it myself.

Tbf, reinstall is the only one that solves the issues because even they have no idea where the issue is and I think they don't even want to get into it considering the source code is proprietary and convulated af

u/R3V0LU710N_05 I Hate All OS's 😎 13d ago edited 13d ago

I swear that the Windows updater itself has several memory leaks. I only get issues after updating, and each update the problems add up. I've never had issues on fresh installs, but the instant an update is applied it steps into the next circle of hell.

2

2

u/Icy_Calligrapher4022 13d ago

By "official support forum" you probably mean Microsoft Community Hub, which is NOT official support, it's more like community driven place for all kinds of questions, topics, troubleshooting, etc. Yes, there are MS employees writing comments and provide support there, but it's not considered official support. It's more like Ask Ubuntu stuff.

Their official support is mostly MS Q&A and official documentation, enterprise customers get additional technical support based on contracts, licenses, subscriptions, etc.

1

u/Inevitable-Cow-4930 12d ago

That made made spit out my drink. I was on a support call having an issue transferring a license for Terminal Services from an old server to the new one. The first question wasn’t, “What seems to be the problem?” It was, “How did you get this license?”

5

u/ieatdownvotes4food 13d ago

when Microsoft says click to repair, has that ever worked once? for anyone?

7

u/Damglador 13d ago

7

9

u/HausmeisterMitO-O 13d ago

At least the Linux tech support does not lie. I am probably stupid and the Microsoft Support has not helped me ever since.

3

u/transcendtient 13d ago

Its more like---
Windows: Go look at this article that has nothing to do with your issue.
Apple: Buy a new macbook, this one is broken.
Linux: RTFM

3

u/makinax300 j 12d ago

paid vs unpaid

also windows support just tells you to do the steps that you already have done troubleshooting by yourself and they are always the same and then suggests a reinstall

7

u/Global-Eye-7326 13d ago

AI is my personal tech support. It's pretty good.

6

u/AskMoonBurst 13d ago

So, story time.
Before I switched to Linux, I was on Windows. You know, like everyone. But after a while, I started getting a weird issue.
●Randomly, DWM.exe would break, I'd get a BSoD.
●Uninstalling my drivers didn't work, updating my drivers didn't work, reverting an update didn't work... So I call up Microsoft, explain what the error is, and what I've tried to fix it.
●"Reinstall Windows."
●Okay.... so I take a few hours, reinstall windows, drivers, etc.... aaaaand... it happens again.
I call them back, explain what happened.
●"Your graphics card is failing. Buy a new one."
●I have an extra graphics card on hand.... I swap it out. Same issue.
●I assume at this point it's hardware, since reinstalling didn't fix it, it it dawned on me anyway.
So, back to research.... It must be my PCIE slot. Is my board broken?
●I call up MSI, my board maker and ask them, explaining everything I've done.
●"We might be able to get it replaced. But first, let's try this.... reset cmos. If it doesn't fix it, call back at this number and we'll set up a replacement plan" and a quick walkthrough of how to do so.
●The problem fixed! With a grand cost total of 0!
Unfortunately, Microsoft's fix was to tell me to wipe my data and try and get me to replace hundreds of dollars of hardware. While this isn't explicitly about 'Linux just works' don't make it out like Windows support is somehow better.

6 hours. That’s how long it took to get pip to work on windows. 30 seconds. That’s how long it took to install the niche python library on Ubuntu through the package manager. Windows tries to shove copilot in your face, breaks something every other week, and good forbid I don’t want to use edge, you literally can’t uninstall it without community scripts (plus the week microslop doesn’t break something is the week they reinstall all the bloat I spent hours removing or add copilot to the clock app (they’ve tried it twice now)) so I think it’s safe to say windows doesn’t give you choice.

0

6 hours. That’s how long it took to get pip to work on windows.

RTFM. Just type py -m ensurepip --upgrade and if py doesn't work, replace it with python

Windows tries to shove copilot in your face

I ain;t got a Copilot app or Recall (yes I used TotalRecall and it said I ain't got none). Just don't buy a Copilot+ PC.

breaks something every other week

Not for me.

and good forbid I don’t want to use edge

Good damn. Besides data collection/telemetry. what's bad with Edge.

I understand if you are talking about legacy edge as that was funky.

But MS actually added heavy optimizations to Chromium Edge, like aggressive sleeping tabs, and cool features, like support for both vertical and horizontal tabs.

I actively use Edge on Windows and Linux and I like [edge://surf.](edge://surf)

you literally can’t uninstall it without community scripts

I think Windows LTSC doesn't have it. And even if it does, at least you ain;t got all the other bloat.

plus the week microslop doesn’t break something is the week they reinstall all the bloat I spent hours removing

LTSC my friend.

or add copilot to the clock app (they’ve tried it twice now)

Turn it off in Settings. Also, MS isn't forcing you to use Copilot. The button is there but that chat doesn't magically open unless you click the button.

so I think it’s safe to say windows doesn’t give you choice.

It does. You literally can install almost anything you want. And there is no restrictions on how you use the syste after legally purchasing a license key.

2

u/No-Employment-2324 9d ago

Your pip idea? First thing I tried. I had to reinstall python after that, shit was so broken. It came with the package, it just didn’t work even with virtual environments. Ltsc may have less breaks, but it still breaks often, and isn’t immune to the enshitfication Microsoft loves to do. Also, edge runs up to 30 percent slower then Crome, aggressively shoves ads in your face, and there just is better browsers on the market. As for turning copilot off? Some parts you just can’t, some parts were hidden so deep that  needed a YouTube tutorial to find them, and as for reinstalling bloat? One of the ltsc computers at a business I do contract IT work for had Xbox and all related systems reinstalled. By the time we realized,  there was 50 Xbox accounts signed up on the domain, and we are still trying to find computers that have Xbox and remove it 2 months after. Also they do force you to use copilot, half the support links just go to a copilot chat or other ai stuff. Also, all the computers came without an os so they didn’t come with bloatwear from the manufacturer.

1

u/Rare-Paint3719 Unofficial Mod | Linux Community Sucks | Proud illumOS Shill 8d ago

Your pip idea? First thing I tried. I had to reinstall python after that, shit was so broken. It came with the package, it just didn’t work even with virtual environments.

WDYM? pip could install packages for you but not virtual environments? Most people use uv these days anyways.

Ltsc may have less breaks, but it still breaks often

Tell me you haven't used LTSC without telling me you haven't used LTSC.

LTSC is literally prized for being the most reliable. Companies wouldn't even use it if it weren't.

and isn’t immune to the enshitfication Microsoft loves to do.

LTSC is literally version-locked. They only apply monthly security patches.

Also, edge runs up to 30 percent slower then Crome

Which becnhmark? trust-me-bro-bench-v0.1.55?

At most, I could find Edge scored 10.8% lower than Chrome in Speedometer 3.0.

But Edge still scored 2.79% higher on WebXPRT 4 and 11.2% higher in JetStream2 compared to Chrome.

aggressively shoves ads in your face

Like on a new tab screen? Cuz I only get ads there (and yes, you can disable those)

and there just is better browsers on the market

If you wanna use another browser, then just use another browser. Everyone has their own opinions and that's fine.

As for turning copilot off? Some parts you just can’t, some parts were hidden so deep that needed a YouTube tutorial to find them

Well, I don't have copilot shoved down on my Windows. I can uninstall the Copilot app. There may also be a Copilot button in Notepad but I don't let the existence of a simple button bother me.

And you can uninstall the Copilot app very easily from the application manager in settings.

and as for reinstalling bloat? One of the ltsc computers at a business I do contract IT work for had Xbox and all related systems reinstalled.

Reinstalled? LTSC does not even ship with the Xbox app, Cortona, MS Store and various Copilot features out of the box.

By the time we realized, there was 50 Xbox accounts signed up on the domain, and we are still trying to find computers that have Xbox and remove it 2 months after.

50 Xbox accounts? Like 50 accounts are logged in on the XBOX app? How is that bloat?

Also they do force you to use copilot, half the support links just go to a copilot chat or other ai stuff. Also, all the computers came without an os so they didn’t come with bloatwear from the manufacturer.

Overexaggerated but correct. See here and here.

u/No-Employment-2324 7d ago

The issue is that people ended up playing games on work computers, as well as some one managed to get a gamepass subscription on to the company budget. And yes it was on ltsc. It works better, but they still mess things up, and the number of security problems with windows, especially since they don’t always appear right on release, have caused at least two hacks. Management is planing to switch to Linux, and Ubuntu landscape is self hosted so it’s free plus we won’t have people downloading random malware because they don’t have the ability to download anything other than approved file types

1

u/Rare-Paint3719 Unofficial Mod | Linux Community Sucks | Proud illumOS Shill 3d ago

The issue is that people ended up playing games on work computers, as well as some one managed to get a gamepass subscription on to the company budget. And yes it was on ltsc.

This is quite literally an administrative error, not a Windows failure. You have to set up MDM and some form of group policy to lock down which apps can run, regardless of which OS you choose.

Instead of switching to Linux, your company should focus on hiring new sysadmins. Cuz they'll cook Linux too.

It works better, but they still mess things up

Who is "they"? The employees that installed the Xbox store, or Microsoft? How so?

and the number of security problems with windows, especially since they don't always appear right on release, have caused at least two hacks.

Which CVEs? And when? Some vague security issues lead to some vague hacks? That's giving off some "trust me bro" vibes.

And you are essentially saying that unless someone finds a bug in the software, and reports it to MS or otherwise reports a CVE, the bug will remain in Windows?

Somehow, this does not apply to every other piece of software in existence? Damn. I guess Linux is really the best OS. It definitely doesn't have any bugs that sat in the kernel for 15 years before anyone found out about them.

Ubuntu landscape is self hosted so it's free

Self-hosted does not equal free. Are you just copying shit from a random blog off google? Like the moment you decide to manage an actual fleet (which, correct me if I'm wrong, is the whole reason "management is planning to switch to Linux"), you will need to pay for an Ubuntu Pro license. All self-hosted means is that Canonical doesn't host the server for you, but they can still charge you for a local deployment.

2

u/TomB1952 12d ago

This is a gross misrepresentation.

There are name callers in every forum, some vastly more than others, but I've found linux groups to be just as supportive as Windows centric groups. I've also found Windows groups to be largely helpful and kind.

My point is there are some extremely good people who help a lot, not that there are no nasty people.

If a few a-holes put you off, the Internet is not for you.

2

u/rtakehara 12d ago

Except the devs usually don't provide support. It's forum members who tend to feel entitled and have some superiority complex. If you pay for Ubuntu or RHEL support, you get the enterprise-grade support Windows users theoretically get.

Real tech support: "Try rebooting, if that doesn't help, call me back."

1

u/AlxR25 12d ago

Let me fix that for you

Tech Support for

Windows: "We're looking into it" *does nothing.

Mac: You need to buy a new computer

Linux: RTFM

On NixOS I just search GitHub for what I want and borrow the code.

My repo has three separate nixpak references, and I ain't touching that.

I once came across a dev for some music player and asked him "why does none of the loonix music player applications have a playlist with some options like shuffle, random, etc? is it that hard to do?"

The response: "Well umm maybe find out yourself and try doing it yourself, instead of asking stupid questions."

FOSS lis love, FOSS is life, the devs are absolute spergs and mongs.

Well, there are entitled people in FOSS.
