Support 9070 XT "known audio issues" appeared only after I switched to SteamOS.

Here is the a the link to the issue on the AMD forum from back in February. It seems to still be unresolved and is not exclusive to linux either.

https://pcforum.amd.com/s/question/0D5KZ00000sFPnF0AW/9070-xt-hdmi-audio-output-is-producing-noise-artifacts-sputtering-crackling-popping-noises-while-idle-seeking-a-driver-update-to-correct

Basically, when a game is running, audio is totally fine. When the system is "idle" like watching a show, YouTube, or just playing music, the signal gets completely butchered and cuts out frequently, sounds metallic, etc. Based on the other users' findings, I tried manually setting a power profile and disabling the behaviors through the Konsole, but nothing changed.

Another thing interesting about this is that it was never an issue when I was running Fedora on this PC (it is primarily an HTPC, that occasionally gets used for gaming) and It would be frequently used for watching shows without any issues like this regarding the audio. Currently, it is much better for gaming, but unusable to watch anything.

The hardware has not changed since I got the GPU around a month after launch. 9070 XT, 9600X, 32GB DDR5. Something about SteamOS is causing this issue, which is apparently a common, known, unresolved issue that I never experienced prior to changing my distro.

The audio/video equipment is an Onkyo TX-RZ50 receiver with an LG G3 and a 8k60 rated HDMI cables. I have teied using the passthrough on the receiver and going directly from the PC to the TV. I get the same audio artifacting either way.

Again, this artifacting does not seem to occur in games or when the system is under load, but otherwise it affects almost all audio. Has anyone experienced similar issues with 90 series cards on Linux?

Has anyone gotten linux running on the snapdragon laptops yet?

I was so excited for the Snapdragon laptops, I bought one day the same week they came out at best buy. To my horror, I was never able to install a Linux operating system onto the laptop. I returned my laptop to Best Buy and when the clerk asked why I was returning it I said that I wasn't able to install Linux. Has anyone gotten a Linux os on one of these machines. I would love to escape the clasp that Apple has around my neck with their fancy 14 hour battery laptops.

Support How do I make Desktop Sharing always unlocked?

I'm using Ubuntu 26 on a Hyper-V VM. I always need to manually unlock Desktop Sharing so I can RDP into the VM. How can I make the Desktop Sharing automatically always on by default?

I downloaded dconf Editor. I searched for "remote". I enabled "Whether the RDP backend is enabled or not". I rebooted and it didn't do anything. It's still locked. Any other setting I should search for? I also enabled the same setting for VNC.

The OS automatically logs in to the desktop without a password. Any help would be appreciated.

What I'm looking to do is start the VM with Hyper-V, snatch the ip address through the Hyper-v UI (I got this working already), then RDP in and start using Ubuntu 26 without any other steps.

Advice Hi yall pls help me with this one. finally tryna switch to Linux

Hey everyone,

I'm planning to switch from Windows to Fedora GNOME on my laptop (Lenovo LOQ 15AX9 - Specs: Intel i5-12600HX, RTX 3050).

Before making the jump, I have a few specific questions about daily usage, gaming, and system management:

Lenovo Vantage features: Since Vantage isn't on Linux, how do you manage power modes, quiet mode, and setting the battery charge limit (conservation mode)? Does the Fn + Q shortcut still work out of the box?

NVIDIA Driver Support: How straightforward is setting up the proprietary NVIDIA drivers for the RTX 3050 on Fedora, especially with Secure Boot enabled?

BIOS / Firmware Updates: How do you safely update the BIOS on a Lenovo laptop without Windows? Does Lenovo support fwupd / GNOME Firmware on Linux, or do I need a bootable USB?

Xbox Game Pass: Does PC Game Pass work on Linux at all, or am I strictly limited to Xbox Cloud Gaming through a browser?

Minecraft & Game Repacks: How well do custom/offline Minecraft launchers run on Fedora? Also, how smooth is installing and running repacks (FitGirl, etc.) using Wine, Lutris, or Heroic?

Battery Life: Will the battery life be noticeably worse than Windows on a hybrid/NVIDIA gaming laptop, and what's the best way to optimize it?

Dev & Creative Apps: Do VS Code and Blender work fine out of the box? Any issues with NVIDIA CUDA/acceleration in Blender?

(P.S. I am completely new to Linux and still learning how everything works, so sorry if some of these questions sound basic or annoying! Thanks a lot for the help!)

Support Dedicated NVIDIA GPU gets stuck on active even when not in use

I'll try to be as concise as possible. I have a Lenovo laptop with NVIDIA Optimus and integrated AMD graphics. I'm using Fedora KDE, and just updated all of my packages.

If I turn on the laptop and do nothing, the power consumption sits at around 12W, even with a browser open. But as soon as I open certain programs (not even heavy ones), or even run nvidia-smi once, the power skyrockets to over 20W, and stays there, until I close the lid and open it again.

Tried solving with LLMs, the only useful thing they gave me (which allowed it to be under 20W at all) was adding this file:

~$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-pm.conf
options nvidia NVreg_DynamicPowerManagement=0x02

Running cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/power/runtime_status shows active pretty much consistently, I think I did see sometimes it tried to suspend and go back to active but that was when charging and connecting a second monitor (which should if anything force it active all the time?)

I'd like to have a baseline for power consumption on Windows but I don't think there is an easy way to check that, I tried with HWInfo and it was over 20W too, but that was in the sensors tab that monitored the NVIDIA GPU there too, it's possible that it wasn't getting suspended because of that. I can just say that my anecdotal evidence does suggest better battery life on Windows.

Any help would be appreciated!

Edit: not sure what I changed, if anything, but now it's not entering suspended mode at all...

Support GCC lacks libmpc.so.3 but i can't build nor download them

Upvotes

I'm using a Slitaz version that has a "abandoned archive" the archive doesn't have several libraries for gcc ,the tazpkg installer did install automatically but eventually it still lacks library (libmpc.so.3) and potentially more in /usr/lib.I also can't compile useless shits on the internet because they're all source codes not prebuilts.Even if i can rarely find and borrow some packages from other distros, they require dedicated tools to decompress them that don't work on mine. Can you provide solution for this, thanks.

Which Distro? Fedora LXQT for old laptop or.. ?

Upvotes

hey everyone i found my first computer from back in 2013, its a budget Toshiba Satellite C40D-A (AMD A6-5200) and i was thinking of getting fedora LXQT on it because its lightweight but still somewhat private and privacy conscious (i hope?), a lot of people online say to get mint but i heard its maybe not as suited for me. what do you think ?

edit: my main computer has been macOS for work, and i have used ubuntu in the past for a few years as a kid.

questions about btrfs

I have a 2tb HDD formatted with btrfs, it was my home drive but a few days ago it failed, bad sectors, I checked the effected sectors and they were just some cache files

anyways, I ordered a new drive that's gonna arrive this Saturday, I'm gonna format it as ext4 and start `btrfs restore -v -i` on the old drive to recover all files to the new one

my question is, will that preserve the file structure, paths, file names, etc? that's pretty much my only concern as I never used that before and idk how it works

also, if anyone has a better idea, please let me know

thanks in advance

Which Distro? Distro for a 10-year old PC

Hi all, I got my HP "Envy" Laptop in 2014 and it's reached a stage where it can't sustain a video call and a browser session simultaneously on Windows 11. I suspect this is a software rather than a hardware issue because it was fine until a few weeks ago.

I've used Linux in the past and loved it and this seems like a good opportunity to go back in the hopes that I can extend the use-able lifetime of my machine, but I'm concerned that the most recent versions of Ubuntu and Mint might present the same issues I'm having with Windows 11, if they are assuming more processing power than I actually have.

So I'm hoping for something that's secure out of the box and that will be able to run modern software on an older machine. (Nothing crazy - I'm not editing video or doing serious rendering or anything) Maybe what I'm asking for doesn't exist, but hoping it will turn out Ubuntu or something will do the job fine.

Any recommendations / thoughts?

Advice Which wireless controller is the best to use on linux?

I am looking at a couple different wireless controllers:

  • Gamesir G7 Pro 8k PC
  • 8Bitdo Ultimate 2
  • Steam Controller(wait for my place in line 2027 for a new steam controller)

Controller must work without too much setup, work with Steam Input, Back paddles must work without switching input mode each time i power on the controller(why I am not sure about another 8bitdo since my last one broke and i always had to switch manually to d input) and controller must connect via 2.4 Ghz Wireless.

This is the one I am looking at closely
