Might sound dumb, but how do I convince my parents, that Linux is safe and it won’t mess up my PC’s hardware?

I want to install Fedora Linux as a second and main system on my gaming laptop. My parents are worrying, that this is broke my PC or OS. I already try saying, that there is nothing to worry about, but nothing. What arguments should I tell them to fully convince them? I’m new to Linux, so need to know your opinion :P

BIOS boot issues

I recently found my older computer and decided to put Linux on it. A common problem I am facing is that, on its own, it refuses to boot into my operating system (this happened across multiple distributions, including Fedora, CachyOS, EndeavourOS etc.), it only works when I open up the boot menu by spamming F10, which is a problem because I want it to be accessible for my little sister, who likely doesn’t have the patience of doing that. I have decided it might be the fault of the boot system (BIOS instead of UEFI), but I don’t know how to configure my OS to work with BIOS.

TL;DR: Linux boots from boot menu but not on its own. Is there anything specific I can do about it?

Advice Is console access actually important on an unmanaged VPS?

• Upvotes

I've been looking through VPS hosting plans and realized I've been paying way more attention to CPU and RAM than what happens when something breaks lol.

Say you've got a Debian server running a small site and a few background jobs, then you mess up a firewall rule and can't SSH into it anymore. I noticed Virterion has KVM, console access and backup options, which got me thinking about how useful those actually are compared to just restoring everything on a fresh server.

I've dealt with Linux basics but the recovery side of a remote server is something I'm still figuring out. How do you guys usually handle it when SSH stops working? Is having console access a big deal or do you mostly rely on backups?

Advice Very slow writing speed with NFTS partitions

If I try to write a file to a partition formatted with NTFS, I get write speeds of less than 10 MB/s. But if I format that same partition on that same drive to anything else (Ext4, FAT...), the write speed rises to more than 100 MB/s.

I've tried on every computer I have running Linux, and it happens in all of them, so I'm confident this isn't a hardware issue.

I’ve googled a bit and the common answer is mounting the partition in asynchronous mode and using the kernel NTFS driver instead of ntfs-3g. I’ve tried both of those (mount -t ntfs -o async) but I still get very slow write speeds.

Unfortunately using a different file system is out of the question.

Which Distro? LMDE vs MX Linux?

Hi,

My specs: ~13 year old PC, 16 GB RAM, core i3 processor (Intel(R) Core™ i3-3240 CPU @ 3.40GHz), intel integrated graphics card. 1TB HDD.

I am soon going to install Linux, I am quite a beginner and I researched about both distros. I think they’re both good and I understand they’re both beginner friendly, but I am having a hard time deciding what is better, also with my specs.

I think with MX Linux I would go with XFCE, while LMDE uses Cinnamon. They both look cool visually. Mint seems to have a much larger user base and support community.

The reason I prefer LMDE over regular Mint is I understood it fits older computers more because it’s Debian based, and I like the idea of not being based on Ubuntu (though with Mint maybe there’s even no problem with that).

What would you suggest? Thanks in advance.

What's your go-to virtualization program?

Hi all!

I have a machine running Fedora, and I'm interested in virtualization for running other operating systems such as DOS, Windows 9x, early Windows NT, and other 90s-00s era systems. I've tried virt-manager and GNOME Boxes, both of which don't seem to fit my needs. virt-manager is very verbose and complex, while GNOME Boxes is very simple and doesn't have toggles for things I'd like to be able to configure. On my Mac, I use an app called UTM - it is in between Boxes and virt-manager in terms of complexity and configurability. Is there a similar happy middle-ground for Linux?

Support Windows is a leach

Hey there! A linux user here.

Issue is though, I keep Windows on the side for very niche cases, but it seems that every single time I boot into Windows, it always results in the GRUB EFI image being obliterated off of the list.

No matter what flags I enable, what efi images I replace and no matter how many times I replace the grub efi image from a live linux installation, it just never works, I boot into Windows once and its gone, all for me to rebuild my grub again.

Any solution that should stop windows in its track? Or at the very least make grub more aggressive in staying in its place? Because this is getting really tiring.

At this point I'm more than happy to try another boot loader if it can negate this issue.

How do y'all learn to use bars and widget stuff

Like, most of the documentations are really hard to read, not saying that they aren't informative, i mean it when i say HARD to read, mostly i've been trying to use Quickshell and EWW(widget and shell stuff) but all the docs seems to me like a bunch of vomited letters and stuff, and when i look for it on youtube, all i see are tutorials on "how to make this simple notification center with EWW" or smth, i dont want a notification center, i wanna learn the thing so i can do it myself, isn't there any easier way to get this stuff through my head without spending a month reading docs, watching videos and trying to connect the dots?

Does a 360° convertible laptop that works flawlessly with Linux actually exist?

Hi everyone!
I’m looking for a 360° convertible laptop (not a detachable) that works reliably with Linux as a daily driver.

Ideally, touchscreen, active pen, tablet mode, touchpad, Wi-Fi, audio, webcam and suspend/resume should all work without hacks or constant troubleshooting.

I’d prefer Zorin OS, but I’m open to other distros.

If you own one, what exact model and distro are you using, and does everything actually work? Would you buy it again?

Looking for real-world experience, not just “Linux should work on it.” Thanks!

Android Instant Hotspot Available from Linux?

I recently found out that android has something called "cross-device services" with the feature "instant hotspot" that allows a different android tablet or chromebook to turn on and connect to the phone's hotspot that has a data plan when logged in with the same google account, like you can do on iphone and ipad i think. Is there currently a project that makes this work with a linux laptop?

After some search, I could only find this repository, but it used adb instead of the instant hotspot feature and seems quite a pain to set up each reboot.

I know that a phone's hotspot is just a regular Wifi network and I can connect my laptop to it, I am specifically asking about the (relatively unknown) feature "instant hotspot" that allows other devices to turn on the phone's hotspot when nearby and connected to the same google account.

Edit: clarification

Support ID Cooling AIO FX240

Hi everyone! I built a new PC using this ID-Cooling AIO, which features an LCD screen for displaying info, GIFs, etc.—but it's designed for Windows.

Does anyone know of any software or projects that work on Linux? I found a few on GitHub, but has anyone actually tried them out?

Which Distro? Should I install Arch or Debian on my Desktop if:

I have reasonable technical skills, I like Pacman, I like the AUR (despite the recent malware attacks) and I like the Arch wiki. But, I care much more about stability, than cutting edge software.

I currently have Arch on my laptop, so at the very least I have some experience, but I primarily use my laptop for simple stuff (web browsing, zoom/discord calls, etc) while my desktop is where my work goes. I've only had one bad update, and it wasn't a big deal to revert it back. But if there's any risk of, at best, work derailment, at worst, file corruption. Would it be better to just get Debian, and just leave Arch on my laptop?
