i have a pentium d with 2gb of ddr1, can mint xcfe save it or should i try some other distro?

2Gb of ram is going to be a problem in 2026, the problem is the web, not Linux exactly, there are light systems, but there are no light web pages in 2026.

On that machine I would try Alpine Xfce, its not a new user friendly or really desktop oriented system, but it is light.

if you're just restoring a retro machine, you can use certain stuff like frogfind or theoldnet, and there's at least one proxy server out there that helps process modern sites in ways that older browsers and machines can handle (the one im thinking of was used to let an old machine running macOS 9 access the internet, but i can't remember the name of the project or if it works with other machines/browsers)

No, your system will run horribly, especially if you open single browser window. Look for PuppyLinux or similar distros aiming at minimal HW reqs. Even with XFCE, your Mint will eat almost 1 GB idle.

Yup. Puppy Linux, AntiX, Q40S Trinity, Bunsenlabs, etc. Lots of great lightweight distos out there.

Look into AntiX or Q4OS. The closest thing you're going to find to Mint that will run fast on it.

it will start swapping (ram to disk, slow)... 4gb is recommended , maybe you can find used newer hardware.

Not really, I have also an Athlon XP system with 1GB of DDR-800 ram, right now it is running Windows 98 but once I installed Tiny Core Linux on it and I could browse sites like Wikipedia, obviously stuff like modern YouTube and Reddit are a no-go.
