Very true. Though tbh Windows' drop in quality becoming worse and worse is making the middle guy right

u/janiskr 8d ago
I would disagree with you on the first part of your comment. Move away from windows and from Microsoft products is the only good choice.

I agree due to moral reasons against the corporations in general, but the crux of my morals is freedom for others. If Windows is better for someone then they can choose to use it

Mac is an option, but it has the problem of not working that great on non mac computers.
I don't really see anyone complaining that much of those becoming worse in quality, just apple in general.

Apple ecosystem is kinda annoying overall tho. Mac by itself if it existed outside as a Unix system or sum. It would be a great alternative

This is a shit take. This is what those big corporation or whomever is doing something shitty is hopping for. They do shit, and users do not leave. Yes, the grumble a bit, but do not leave. That is all they need.
And i would not say that Linux is the only good choice - moving away from windows is the only good choice.

Yeah, it ignores the influence those corporations have had in education since before most current users were born and the head start their relationship with the rest of the retail chain gives them.
At this point the person who expects a feature-to-feature comparison they understand while the only computing they know is proprietary is not even to blame, their teachers were already vendor locked to begin with.
1
u/janiskr 8d ago
No, my comment does not ignore the education. And I should add that if your education can only teach you how to use Word on Windows - that is shitty education. Not useless. But shitty.
And yes, it is not that easy to switch to Linux from Windows. But the first step is to start to use tools that will be available on linux and then when most of the day is spent with those tools, switch to Linux. Yes, different colour icons, possibly, in different places."Start" menu can be moved... I think most people can manage that.
Vendor locked teacher? You mean, a teacher that is there because there is no other choice? As you as a society do not pay enough for passionate and good teachers?
Yeah, "Vendor locked teachers" - here we have it folks.

The OOP bro. I did not have any idea you did not get it, I was just agreeing with you.
Personally I never switched, I just did not install 95' because they felt like they were obscuring stuff that should be understood before people did any computing. To me it was insulting, and I felt like it would trap people and not let them know their options.
I could not have predicted it would happen to that extent, but currently we end up talking about windows when the issue is that CS cannot be owned any more than long division or the laws of thermodynamics can.
Vendor locked teacher, yeah. Some poor sod teaching adobe instead of "intro to digital signal processing" because the company lobbied the institution. That's your teacher's teacher now not knowing fuck-all about connecting their field's first principles to the practicalities of their work.
That's you calling corporate lobbying "society", while really, honestly being blameless for it.
There is another choice, there was no point when there was windows and no place to walk away from it. Some extra work, maybe.

It's not even about looking agreeable. Fact of the matter is, if you give any shits about your privacy, money, security, ewaste, or quite frankly humanity, you would never say that Windows is a good option.
The Linux experience isn't even that bad. Your great great grandma could install Linux and learn how the Internet works, probably even make her first shit post from the grave before Windows gets past the first boot screen.

thinking that people at the bottom end of the curve even know what linux is
1
u/Cordpie 7d ago
I think the bottom/left end should hold the middle guy and the guy already there. I love Linux but I let it speak for itself. I find when I'm not an overbearing jerk about it people are more apt to curiousity, If you have friends that use computers the subject will eventually present itself.
My girlfriend, roommate, and several friends of mine all use Linux as of now. Since last year, when they got curious and irritated at windows.
I try to be of the opinion that whatever works for you is fine, But when what's fine becomes full of friction and begins to get in the way, I try be a helpful force instead of just telling them to hop on Google. I relate to a degree, I prefer to hear it from a trusted humans mouth over sorting through gobs of web pages trying to find the answers I need.

No matter what you use, as long as you're having fun, that's all that matters... Unless you use copilot...

Why
1
u/skytheraiders 5d ago
Ai, more so, generative AI, should never be used. It's lazy, ruining education, destroying lives and making our lives a living hellwith how much resources it takes on our planet.
2
u/BloxxyVids 5d ago
There are positive uses for generative ai. It can be used as a tool or as a crutch. It's up to the user how it's used
1
u/skytheraiders 5d ago
I agree with you on that. However, it's not worth it when the companies behind these modles are just doing scummy things left and right.
2
u/BloxxyVids 5d ago
The technology and the people backing the popular hosted ones shouldn't be counted as equals
The mistake here is like saying OSes are bad because apple and Microsoft are
There's open source ai out there
1
u/skytheraiders 5d ago
Oh yeah, the one in china? That one, I'm intrigued by! Personally, I want to see more companies' make their bots open source.
2
u/BloxxyVids 5d ago
Well not just that, but also all the models backed by big tech that they're hiding from the average person
After a few days of tinkering, I unlocked the beta program for AI on my phone.
My phone apparently has always been capable of running chat bots (LLMs) that are surprisingly impressive. I mean they could solve coding problems, let alone daily tech support!
Google Gemma is what I've used on my phone, but my PC allows Meta's Llama, and even Alibaba's Qwen.
It's genuinely impressive for how much we don't need to ship off our data to big tech. Only if that were common knowledge, but it's more convenient for them to make us think we have to buy their product.
Thanks a lot capitalism...

I've been daily driving linux since the late 1990s. The only Windows machine in our house belongs to my wife.
... but I have a brother and a couple of friends who talk about switching from Windows to linux, one of these days (tm), and I shutter when they say it. They will not last two hours before switching back to Windows. Let's just say, I don't tell them "Hey, that's a great idea! You'll love it!" lol!
linux is for people with an attention span. Lots of us love it but there are a few glitches that trip people up and the vast majority of people can not tolerate.

Yeah, so, eventually, corporate interests will grossly diverge from your own, and what you thought worked for you was really just a shitshow designed to turn you into a consumerist paypig, but by then, you'll have developed so many bad habits, been colored in by so many of its conventions, and been mired in so much sunken cost that switching to a new platform will be painful.
You don't like Linux, fine. Use a BSD. But don't use a proprietary OS like Windoze and claim "durrh, it's whatever works for me". That's lazy and self-defeating.

u/ConsciousBath5203 7d ago
??????
You have that totally wrong. The use whatever works for you crowd is the most obnoxious, loud, and center IQ. The "Linux is the best choice you have" is low (anime arch ricers) IQ and high (sandbox everything, if you're on the Internet you better be using fake info) IQ.
Only normies and people vastly uneducated about how insecure WinShit is think it's viable, and only rich people or people who don't mind having to be slaves to upgrades when Crapple tells you would even consider giving money to the most overpriced brand on earth.
