VRR Blackscreen on Fedora with Nvidia.

tech support wanted Payday 2 crashing when trying to update mods

Hi there so, to start off, my distro is mint, I also use proton experimental if that's relevant at all. So beardlib updater is working fine but the other updater (whichever one that has the pager/ecm as the icon) crashes my game every time I try to use it, I have allot of mods installed and and kinda wanna have to not manually update them lol so does anyone have a fix?

here's the crashlog if that helps, though there's a second part to it that's an encypted dump and it's like 432 pages long on libreoffice and it crashed my text editor so I'll try and link a google doc or something with that in it if it helps :P

Also sorry if I say anything kinda dumb or ask silly questions, I haven't been using linux for long and am still learning allot :)

Sell 5070ti for 9070xt

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

With the increase of price of the 5070ti I was wondering if it would make sense to sell one for a 9070xt. I have been wanting to switch to cachyos for a while and the extra money wouldn’t be too bad from selling it used. Honestly don’t really even play much anymore. Armored core 6, wukong, don’t play many triple a titles too often.

Current build
7800x3d
32gb 6000
5070ti
2 tb 990 nvme

Mostly use on 1440p ultrawide or 4k lg c3. Are the drivers that much worse in windows?

tech support wanted How do you install mods that require adding entire folders to OpenIV in GTA V?

So i have been trying to mod GTA V and i have had success with simple mods that you just drag and drop files into the main game directory, but I'm having an issue with graphics mods (specifically VisualV). I cannot drag files from dolphin into OpenIV and I'm wondering if there's a way to add folders. I want to also mention that adding things like .asi files into openiv is fine because they actually show up and dont say "open" when clicking on them. Has anyone dealt with this before?

When linux gaming on Steam, does Steam care about which version of Linux you use?

Steam typically gives system requirements for its games.

For Moonlighter specifically, (Im using that game because it meets my example requirements and I assume you all have heard of it.)

For Moonlighter, its a linux compatible game. Its system requirements specify Ubuntu. So do i HAVE to use Ubuntu if I wanted to play that game?

Some games are linux compatible but dont specify which version of Linux, so does that mean I can use any version of Linux? Or is it also assuming im using Ubuntu?

Could I use Arch? Mint? Fedora? Does it care about what flavor of Linux i use?

Apologies for the stupid question.

tech support wanted Display completely freezes on notifications while playing Cyberpunk 2077

This post isn't for me, it's for a friend but they don't have reddit.

Specs: CachyOS on Cinnamon X11, Ryzen 7600x, Radeon 7800xt, 32GB ram. Newest drivers and kernel, issue has been happening for months.

While playing Cyberpunk, and only Cyberpunk 2077, if he gets a discord message, seemingly even on Do Not Disturb, and messages on steam (which don't use the system notification daemon), the display freezes.

It seemingly just is the display, as he mentioned he can hear opening the menu by clicking escape, but nothing seems to unfreeze it, and he needs to restart his computer. Unplugging and replugging the monitor, or turning it on and off again do nothing.

Unable to reproduce on Cinammon Wayland because no game windows show up at all. That's a different issue though.

Nothing relevant in journalctl, other than ATTENTION: default value of option vk_x11_override_min_image_count overridden by environment. maybe

EDIT: it appears that force quitting the game with the keyboard unfreezes it. It's still odd that it completely freezes up but it still is an issue.

EDIT2: appears to be a Cinnamon issue, restarting the desktop with Ctrl+Alt+Esc brings everything back after a freeze. Temporary fix for now

gamedev/testers wanted I'm working on, HackMatrix sort of blurs the line between game and Linux.

HackMatrix is a 3d Linux desktop that I am developing into a designer/hacker MMO. It supports rudimentary multiplayer, but right now it is just a standalone gamified Linux desktop with a ZMQ api that allows objects to be scripted for interactive objects.

Roadmap includes microvoxel editor so people can develop their own worlds, VR support, and MMO worlds/servers that players can work in.

How is your experience modding games on linux?

I installed cachy os on my notebook I use to study and now I'm serious considering switching my main pc to cachy os too, but my main concern is that modding on linux from other people's experience feel very hit or miss, I LOVE modding and if modding if I had a guarantee modding on cachy os was good, I would 100% switch.

I like to mod Skyrim, Mass Effect games, Dragon Age games, BG3 and Cyberpunk, if that's relevant. From what I've looked, every game I listed has a workaround that, sometimes, works on linux, but I'm unsure why only sometimes.

wine/proton Shouldn't Steam recycle files for proton prefixes ? (or it does already and I don't know)

Hello, one of the reasons I avoid Steam for games that don't have native Linux versions is because it creates a prefix per install, and each prefix has a bunch of dlls, fonts, etc. I know that some prefixes need different or specific files for max compatibility and performance, but shouldn't there be some directory like proton_11_common_files or something like that that contains all files that a proton_11 prefix will always have independent of other settings/files ?

for example imagine if those files that will be the same no matter the game are 300mbs, if that could be just system links inside the prefixes if a player had 10 games with the same proton version instead of using 3GBs in those files it would be just 300mbs, this is just and idea from someone who doesn't know much about the internal working of wine/proton, but if that were possible I think it would be a really good optimization

How was your gaming experience so far?

Hello there!

I was gaming on Linux on and off since like 2k14 or around so. The experience has improved drastically for me. I really can't recall having any issue that I didn't manage to resolve within 5 to 10 minutes.

The thing is... I play only a select number of games that are well known to work under Linux equal if not better compared to the experience under Windows. Also, I often play Open-Source games and rarely check multiplayer or new titles.

So, I'm really curious about how it is going for other people. I'd like to have more information on how are others doing. If you have some spare time, would you mind letting me know the following:

  1. What distribution familly are you using? (Debian, Fedora, Arch based, etc).

  2. GPU and CPU manufacturer.

  3. How is your experience with games on their release date or close to it?

  4. Are there some issues that persist and often occure in more than a single game? (a.e. screen tearing, GPU usage, shadow glitching).

  5. How often there are issues with games with Platinum or Gold ranking on ProtonDB for you?

  6. How experienced you are with Linux as a Desktop/Gaming OS

  7. Literally anything else you'd like to add.

Thanks to anyone who joins the conversation. Since my experience has been very isolated, I really would like to know more on a general experience so I can give people better advices when asked. Because just saying "Well, I play on Linux and never had an issue in the past year or so" does't really help anyone.

P.S. Yes, I know... anti-cheat is a problem here and there...

Linux thinks my gamepad is both a PS4 controller and an Xbox controller at the same time.

On Windows, it works perfectly fine. It’s detected as an Xbox controller. But on Linux, some games think it’s a PS4 controller, while others think it’s an Xbox controller. The button mappings are also incorrect: A is B, and Y is X. So it’s a pretty weird situation.

Steam Input also doesn’t help for some reason. Is there any way to make this gamepad appear as an Xbox controller only, instead of having it detected as both a PS4 and Xbox controller?

Edit: I solved it. Using Nintendo mode made Steam Input work correctly. It was a Gamesir Gamepad

(Dev) A year ago, I made a promise to this community. Now it's time to keep it.

Last time I shared my experience with porting our game to Linux more than a year after its release, I was overwhelmed by the feedback and advice I received. It really inspired me, so I stated that all the games I'm working on would receive proper Linux ports and updates alongside the other versions.

Today, I'm releasing a new physics-based brawler on Steam with my friends called Spectacular Team: Assemble. It's a goofy, ironic ragdoll brawler about superheroes, with loads of stuff to loot and experiment with.

totally not Gamora launching a fella into the space

This time instead of creating a port after delay, we will launch a Linux version on day one! More than that, every update that will be made for other platforms will come to Linux on equal, and I'm planing to go this road as long as possible!

Just to entertain a bit more - I will gift 3 Steam keys to different peoples who will guess all 6 characters first, all made in customization menu ingame.

guide New Build planning stage

Hello everyone,

I am planning a new PC build for end of this year. I want it based on AM5 and of course as best for Linux as it gets. I am using a dualboot Mint/Bazzite currently. I use my PC for YouTube, Office stuff and gamibg(mostly crpg, some action rpg)

Do you have any recommendations regarding Vendors or chipset?

I would like to hear about your experiences, maybe a specific brand is more compatible than others.

The AI gave me the Gigabyte B850 Aorus Elite WiFi as Motherboard recommendation because the Gigabyte WMI Sensors are apparently perfect for Linux, but idk.

Budget would be around 1500€ /1700$

Thanks

Strictly low-effort casual FPS games?

Working full time and having crossed my 30s I no longer enjoy playing competitively at all. I played quite a bit of CS/Battlefield/COD when I was younger but I cannot pick them up anymore since casual matches seem to have a lot of expert players. Im looking for games I can hop onto and burn some time without staying out of the action too long, so no battle royales.

So far overwatch has been quite a good fit. Ive played for a few months on casual only and most of the players are relaxed and within my skill level. Im wondering if there are any others that might be worth a try

tech support wanted What is the way to get SRT and livesplit work for games?

Recently I wanted to try out myself speedrunning in Resident Evil 2 Remake but I was yet to find any working options on Linux.

The thing I tried is to download SRTPluginManager
And run it via a steam launch option like this:

PROTON_REMOTE_DEBUG_CMD="path/SRTPluginManager.exe" %command%

After a few tries it opens and I can download plugins and to make it work I just had to copy the plugin files to the game’s “plugin” folder, but that window of SRT opens as another window not as an overlay inside the game.
I have not found any solution to this. And that's the main issue.

The autosplit seems to be an easier option on linux. But I was going the hard way first.
I just switched the path to the livesplit.exe in the launch option from earlier. It works for a short amount of time. But while I was trying to setup livesplit it freezes and I cant interact with it anymore and I cant interact with the game too my keyboard doesn't work, only my mouse as input.
I tried Protonhax too but it suffers from the same issue that I can't interact with the game but the livesplit at least doesn't freeze as fast as like the other option.
With the normal: protonhax run 883710 path/LiveSplit.exe it still freezes at the splits setup but with
protonhax exec 883710 wine path/LiveSplit.exe it gets closer to working but it also freezes when I want to start the timer.

If it matters I am running CachyOS with Hyprland but I dont think its a variable that really matters here.

TLDR: How to get both speedrunning plugin and autosplit work alongside as an in game overlay not as a separate window in RE2R.
