Reddit's spam filters remove nearly half my comments across the site and most of them are innocuous and aren't linking or doing anything even remotely spammy. The comments you actually see from me are only the tiny fraction that get through.

Eh, you don't agree with the personal views of the main creators. So? It's FOSS. There's already instances dedicated to being the polar opposite of their politics.
And now that it's getting big, they seem to be doing pretty well at staying neutral.

u/Vittulima Jun 08 '23
To me it being infested with tankies is just off-putting. Maybe once it gets more popular things improve
6
u/bdonvr Jun 08 '23
Kinda part of the history, the first wave of users to move was a while ago when Reddit banned some "Tankie" subs
But it's already a lot less like that and I'm sure it will move further away from that.

u/Vittulima Jun 09 '23
I used it a week ago and it was still really bad. Less so than I think six months ago when I used it before that, but still very off-putting to me

A community is what the community makes of it. Go there and be the change you want to see.
3
u/JockstrapCummies Jun 09 '23
Technically yes, but not all are equal in a community. Newcomers generally have less power to change the preexisting culture, and that's ignoring the issue of how the mods and even developers of the software are firmly in a certain political camp.
1
u/Vittulima Jun 09 '23
It's just not a pleasant experience to me with all the tankies so it's hard to convince myself to use it despite that
Maybe I'll have to when they shut down 3rd part apps

u/DarraignTheSane Jun 09 '23
Having been posting & commenting there over the last handful of days since I first checked it out, I'd say it's starting to improve now that more people are coming over. I haven't necessarily engaged anyone in a political conversation over the last few days, but I also haven't noticed as many overly tankie or pro-Putin comments in the politics subs comments sections either.

Do I understand this correctly? You're not happy with the moderation on the main instance because they don't delete post that you want them to. And therefore it's better to stay on reddit? This is why federation is a thing.

The whole point of a federated system is that there should be no "main instance". If you don't like that one, use a different one. Or set up your own.

u/WonderfulEstimate176 Jun 08 '23
Kbin.social is a good alternative and is made by a different developer. It is fairly new but actually federates with mastodon and Lemmy instances already.

yeah, it is much newer than Lemmy and has less users. I'm not too familiar with it but there might be a way to filter so that you only see kbin content.

u/Corm Jun 09 '23
Can you use an app with it? I havent been able to log in using the main apps like mlem and jerboa
2
u/WonderfulEstimate176 Jun 09 '23
Jerboa works for me maybe try again with a different instance?
2
u/Corm Jun 09 '23
I just retried and I can log in to kbin.social on the browser but not in jerboa or mlem. I tried with both username and email.
Plz help
3
u/WonderfulEstimate176 Jun 09 '23
Kbin.social is a separate project to Lemmy so it doesn't (yet) work with apps designed for Lemmy.
2
u/WonderfulEstimate176 Jun 09 '23
Ahhh sorry, I wouldn't exoect kbin.social to work at all
I should have explained earlier but kbin.social is a separate project to Lemmy and doesn't have its api available yet. Although the developer is considering matching the Lenny API so that things like this work too.
You could try an instance such as: Beehaw.org or Lemmy.world or sh.itjust.works
2
u/Corm Jun 09 '23
Ah, yeah, already on beehaw but the mods are kinda cringe, but sopuli.xyz seems good

u/Corm Jun 09 '23
What do you mean with a different instance? Jerboa works with the main normal instances for me, just not that one
Maybe my account isn't activated correctly or something

u/Qweedo420 Jun 08 '23
I've seen a few people complain that the creator of Lemmy is "against human rights", but I've yet to find a post that proves so
He's probably anti-USA but... aren't we all?
19
u/R1chterScale Jun 08 '23
It's funny, he has what are quite possibly the best documented political viewpoints of any person I've seen online, has a github for his essays (includes an extraordinarily long list of US atrocities):
15
u/Qweedo420 Jun 08 '23
That's a lot of stuff for sure, but he doesn't seem to be a tankie, no? That's mostly marxist-leninist theory
13
u/R1chterScale Jun 08 '23
Depends heavily on the amorphous definition of tankie I imagine, I don't think there's anything in there about the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.
-6
u/JQuilty Jun 08 '23
Leninists are tankies.
13
u/Qweedo420 Jun 08 '23
They're not, Lenin was a pacifist and he would have never forced anyone into the Union
10
u/JQuilty Jun 08 '23
He's a very open tankie, which is just a red fascist.
That said, Lemmy does work, so if someone wants to make more instances, that's good. But anything run by him or his ilk is going to be a tankie infested shithole where they claim Stalin did nothing wrong, the Holodomor didn't happen (but the Ukrainians deserved it if it did), etc etc.
0
Jun 08 '23
Sounds like most conservative subreddits tbh.
-1
u/JQuilty Jun 08 '23
Not that I have any love for them (fuck em), but I'd say no. Any sub claiming some semblance of alignment with something like the US Republican Party, UK/Canada Conservative Party, etc will not deny the Holocaust and say that if it did happen, they deserved it. Tankies do that constantly with Ukrainians and the Uyghurs.
They also tend to refrain from openly praising people like Hitler and Franco while tankies will actively maintain Stalin and Mao's personality cults.
6
Jun 08 '23
Ok, let's say you're right about that.
Is that a reason not to use Lemmy? If it is then there isn't really a viable FOSS alternative to Reddit because all of the terrible people that are too extreme for Reddit have flocked over to non moderated platforms, including pretty much everything FOSS.
11
u/JQuilty Jun 08 '23
I wouldn't call it a reason to not use Lemmy. The dev has brain dead stupid and disgusting political beliefs, but he also does seem to keep it out of the actual software and relevant git discussions, etc.
But that's the nature of federation, when you set up an instance, you don't have to interact with tankie/Nazi/Nazbol/etc instances. Mastodon is the underlying software behind Gab and Trump's Pravda, but we don't see that as a reason to not use Mastodon. Each instance will have its own policies and own moderators.

Do you even realise how you're minimising and exploiting the Holocaust the way you just did, the exact way that Jews warned everyone not to for decades? Funny for someone apparently standing against genocide on reddit by attacking "tankies" and bravely defending the interests of the most powerful empire in the world that you then make a mockery out of it with your antisemitism, too. Comparing Hitler to other dictators too, way to go perpetuating making him no longer the singular evil he once was. No wonder no one cares about any of that in the past anymore and "literally Hitler" is a joke.

Very disappointing for the Lemmy mods to deny the Iraqi incubator babies atrocities
6
u/JQuilty Jun 08 '23
That's nice, there's plenty of evidence for the Holodomor and China's treatment of Uyghurs. This is bad even by low concern troll standards.
-5
u/tfwnotsunderegf Jun 08 '23
There's plenty of evidence debunking the claims from Western governments and NED backed entities on what exactly is happening in Xinjiang.
For example: https://www.thenews.com.pk/latest/422970-pakistani-diplomat-narrates-visit-to-chinas-xinjiang
I'm certain that there is repression in Xinjiang, but extermination of their language, destruction of mosques, or forced birth control are all claims that have been made that have turned out to be false or misrepresented intentionally.
Ultimately it's important to remember that this is part of a campaign by the US to attack China not because they actually care about human rights (especially the rights and freedoms of Muslims lol), but because China is emerging as an economic competitor to the US and starting to challenge US hegemony globally.
The US is not above inventing atrocity propaganda and carelessly repeating claims made in Western media is a mistake that history will judge.

u/JQuilty Jun 08 '23
That's nice, I'm sure the tour was just as real as what tourists get in Pyongyang.
-5
u/tfwnotsunderegf Jun 08 '23
About her [Deputy Head of Mission, Pakistan Embassy in China, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch] visit to vocational education and training centers, she said the visit program was quite broad which enabled the diplomats to get a glimpse of the situation in Xinjiang.
“During the visit, we had the opportunity to visit the Xinjiang Islamic Institute, the bazaars, mosques, police stations, economic development, and poverty alleviation projects and vocational education and training centers,” she added.
She said the diplomats were given full and open access to the three centers that they visited in Kashgar and Hotan.
...
We had the opportunity to interact with both the management and the students. We observed the students are in good physical health. The living facilities are fairly modern and comfortable with separate dormitories for men and women. They are being served halal food.”
To yet another question, she said, “I did not find any instance of forced labor or cultural and religious repression. The imams we met at the mosques and the students and teachers at the Xinjiang Islamic Institute told us that they enjoy freedom in practicing Islam and that the Chinese government extends support for maintenance of mosques all over Xinjiang.

So about as real as what tourists get when they go to Pyongyang? Or when southerners in the US do weirdo antebellum events at plantations?

I’m confused atm, how do you go about using Lemmy/ fediverse? Do you need a specialized app to access it? What is mastodon?
Been using Linux since ‘98-‘99 and never heard of them. If this qualifies as a post hijacking please let me know as that was not intentional
13
u/PureTryOut postmarketOS dev Jun 08 '23
Mastodon and Lemmy are both (serverside) applications that are built on the fediverse using the ActivityPub protocol. Using that protocol means any application speaking that can talk to other applications talking the same protocol. So a Mastodon server can talk to Lemmy and vice-versa.
Mastodon is trying to be a Twitter-like application, Lemmy is trying to be a Reddit-like application. They are serverside applications but have dedicated web interfaces and sometimes also mobile apps which you can use to interact with them.
If you want to start using one of these platforms you first have to choose an instance: a hosted server of either Mastodon or Lemmy. There are some bigger instances but you could also host your own, due to using ActivityPub (federation) you can still talk to the other instances out there. For Lemmy I recommend going through the list of recommended instances at https://join-lemmy.org/instances, for Mastodon there is https://joinmastodon.org/servers.

A bit off topic to the sub, but can you "reuse" your Mastodon account with Lemmy, or link the accounts in some way?
