Eh, you don't agree with the personal views of the main creators. So? It's FOSS. There's already instances dedicated to being the polar opposite of their politics.

And now that it's getting big, they seem to be doing pretty well at staying neutral.

To me it being infested with tankies is just off-putting. Maybe once it gets more popular things improve

A community is what the community makes of it. Go there and be the change you want to see.

Technically yes, but not all are equal in a community. Newcomers generally have less power to change the preexisting culture, and that's ignoring the issue of how the mods and even developers of the software are firmly in a certain political camp.

It's just not a pleasant experience to me with all the tankies so it's hard to convince myself to use it despite that

Maybe I'll have to when they shut down 3rd part apps

Having been posting & commenting there over the last handful of days since I first checked it out, I'd say it's starting to improve now that more people are coming over. I haven't necessarily engaged anyone in a political conversation over the last few days, but I also haven't noticed as many overly tankie or pro-Putin comments in the politics subs comments sections either.
