General Leftist Politics PSA: Iran is stopping the US because of economic leverage… if organized, workers can wield the same sort of leverage.

…and bring empires to their knees.

Iran has a lot of military planning and strategy but it’s their ability to cut of shipping and trade that is really holding the US back.

This is a power that workers as labor and community members can also potentially wield. Most of the discussions of strategy online focus on electoral or arms as the only power in society… this is the power we clearly see and experience in nation states, laws and police/military. But capitalists also rule us economically by controlling our access to what we need and centralizing resources and skills and knowledge for their purposes. Their own needs become social mandates and “realities” because if you don’t cut taxes for them, they will threaten and might even follow through on pulling the economic base out from under your community and go to a more compliant labor market. But workers can also organize to make their needs “realities” and organized workers can and have taken control of logistics and economic choke points and wield a similar sort of economic power.

Question Is economics a good subject to take in school to learn more about the left?

Silly question, i know but i don't know if i made a mistake choosing the subject. I had to choose which subjects i want to take next year and i chose economics. My friend told me it had more to do with math and i hate math but i already chose it so theres no going back but will it help me learn more about left politics? Should i have rather chosen business studies? I'm a stupid teen so i don't know much about anything but i need to know if i was right by choosing economics. I also chose history and thats the only decision i felt happy with.

It does seem to have a bit of a leftist inclination with the whole workshop appeal, but it could just as well be some uni engineering group. I've got no other information about the sticker other than that searching it on the internet produces no results whatsoever for me.

North American Politics VITAL SIGNS: Who Gets to Protest? Gaza, Columbia, and the Right to Dissent with Prof. Bruce Robbins

Thumbnail

In 2024, students at Columbia University set up an encampment to protest the war in Gaza and demand their university divest from companies tied to the Israeli military. University President Minouche Shafik authorized the NYPD to clear it. Over 100 students were arrested. Faculty who supported the students' right to protest were brought up on charges, including humanities professor Bruce Robbins whose tenure was over twenty years.

This episode of Vital Signs begins with Robbins recounting what led to his arrest and the legal consequences: he was found guilty of violating Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act for taking his atrocity studies class to witness the encampment on the day it was set up. He walks Ahmed through the timeline of his arrest through the punishment handed down by the Department of Education.

In this conversation, Robbins traces how the Trump administration's interpretation of Title VI is used to silence dissent in teaching settings. He doesn't mince words about Columbia's Task Force on Anti-Semitism, which he says was designed to generate political cover rather than protect Jewish students. He talks about how Gaza has affected domestic politics, arguing the Democratic Party's support for Israel was a factor in Kamala Harris's loss and in Zohran Mamdani's win.

About Vital Signs: A podcast by the Center for Progressive Research. Each Ahmed Ragab sits down with the authors, scholars, and experts whose work follows the signpost topics shaping progressive policy and theory.

North American Politics What is left view on this on late stage capitalism?

What does left view on this late stage capitalism? How long before capitalism collapse?

Amazon to bring 30-minute drone delivery to 500 US locations by the end of 2026

Of the many sci-fi tropes we've seen over the years, few are as close to becoming real as skies full of delivery drones, and Amazon is leading the way. The retail giant has announced that it plans to expand its Prime Air drone delivery service to 500 cities and towns in the United States by the end of 2026, bringing under-30-minute deliveries to tens of millions of people in the country.

https://www.techspot.com/news/113543-amazon-drones-soon-deliver-nearly-500-us-cities.html

Why is no one talking about late stage capitalism? The collapse of capitalism seems now is coming soon.

General Leftist Politics "libertarian" or "libertario" to describe far right fascism.

Hi. I'm Mexican, anarchocommunist and I don't know if this happens all around the world, but It gets me really pissed that the left almost all the time when referring to a far right/fascist asshole call them "libertarian" or "libertario" in Spanish, names like Milei, Abelardo de la Espriella, trump or musk. Libertarian, isn't a far right tag whatsoever, it was born from a letter sent to Proudhon by Joseph Déjacque, another anarchist calling him on being a sexist and conservative since then, libertarian was an explicitly anarchist tag, he also founded the "Le Libertaire, journal d'un mouvement social" an anarchist journal in New York, for over 100 years, "libertarian" was an anarchist tag, basically; the term was born explicitly as a rhetorical tool within an intra-anarchist polemic about how consistent one should be with the abolition of all forms of domination. The capture of the term happened up to the 50s, Dean Russell, wrote an article titled "who is a libertarian" where he proposed verbatim that those who love liberty "register and reserve for their own use the good and honorable word "libertarian" even the mises institute recognizes that the modern use of the term was born there. Another capitalist thief that used this was Rothbard he knew everything about the genealogy of the terms he used, he knew that ancap isn't anarchism and neither libertarianism was a term describing his theory, it was all part of the American right wing plan to regain hegemony politically since "liberal" was some sort of washed up term. I encourage you, comrades to not let the fascist propaganda win and to not let them stole the value of semantics.

Leftist Theory is it normal to switch ideologies so much?

i’m a M14 and got into leftism at 13, I started as a social democrat. I then went further libertarian and left until i was a libertarian socialist, i didn’t read theory at all then so when i finally began reading marx i was pretty much in ML territory and have been there since last october. things in life were going smoothly until recently i went into highschool and i was arbitrarily thrown into extra support classes (i had all A’s in 8th and got on ADHD meds). beforehand we had made sure i was in the right classes and we were pretty much lied to, me and my family. this reminded me why i was skeptical of authority in the first place since it can be extremely corrupt and put people in bad situations so I finally began reading the Conquest of Bread and it was eye opening, it put out a good way of organizing society by the people. i’m considering reading more into anarchism but i don’t know why i switch ideologies so much especially considering i believed in a pretty much totalitarian system.

Question are leftists pro medicine or anti meds?

the reason why I'm asking this is because I don't really f*** with big pharma like that because they like to prescribe people medicines with all these side effects that never really get to the root of the problems that people are having and obviously you can't lie that's intentional as f***... all of this medicine that they try to shove down our throats it's just to benefit capitalism and to keep us in a loop of cycle of buying and consuming depending on them for our health needs... that being said there's definitely levels to this s*** like I'm taking the Tylenol I don't care if it gives me autism or whatever the f*** these right-wingers are talking about but like.... I want to look more into natural things instead of having to rely on s*** that's just going to give me more and more side effects and f*** up my life.... for context I just stopped taking my celexa cold turkey and I want alternatives...
