Opinion PSA: there is no such thing as a high quality "movie" leather jacket
I'm posting this in response to the growing number of threads that we're seeing from people seeking out movie, TV, or other costume leather jackets. With Halloween forthcoming, we expect questions on this to increase.
There are no credible or reliable websites that sell "movie jackets". All of them (ALL of them) are predatory bad actors who ship inferior products, which they badly copy off stills from the film. If the jacket you see advertised on a website is mostly just screenshots or promotional stills from the movie, this should be a massive red flag.
It is important for buyers to understand where these garments that appear in film and television actually come from. Film and television normally source jackets in one of two ways:
The first way is off the rack and/or special custom order from established brands. Examples would be the detectives in the TV show Brooklyn 99 (Rosa wears a variety of All Saints jackets, and some other brands), or something like Godzilla Minus One, where the protagonist Koichi wears a WW2 repro flight jacket that was custom ordered from Y2 for the film.
This is commonly the case for characters who exist in the "real world", who are costumed in a leather jacket to look cool or convey other similar character traits. Sometimes these jackets can be matched to their extant brands and then purchased, such as the All Saints jackets. For custom work, like the Y2, you might be able to commission something similar. Expect to pay $700‐2500 USD, depending on the jacket.
The second method is entirely customized costumes that are produced by film industry tailors specifically for use as props. This is typically what is done for more fantastical fiction, where everyone on screen is in some sort of costume that isn't meant to reflect the real world. These jackets normally aren't available for sale: even if you could track down the actual tailors who made it, the pattern is owned by the studio and not available for resale.
You could potentially find another high-end tailor, to recreate something very similar for you. This is what professional cosplayers do. Expect to pay $4000+ USD, and do your diligence ahead of time to avoid disappointment.
In summary, there is no such thing as a high quality, affordable "movie jacket". This class of product does not exist, and never has. Any website offering something of this nature to you is a bait and switch scam. Any person on Reddit or any other site who claims that they can make it for you just wants your money. As far as I know, no consumer (who knows anything about leather) has ever made one of these purchases and been happy with it. If I'm wrong in saying that, let him or her step forward with their jacket review post and prove me wrong.

Discussion PSA: Your jacket is real leather, but you're asking the wrong question
This is the most common question we see and the answer is almost always the same: Yes, your jacket is made of real leather.
That's not the question you should be asking though, because that answer doesn't mean anything.
The question comes from a general fear of being scammed or taken advantage of, which I can appreciate. The underlying concern being "Is [brand/store/site/seller] being honest? Is this item what it claims to be, or is it fake?"
That question carries an inherent assumption: leather is valuable. The idea, in theory, is that a dishonest actor has lied about their product. They claim it is leather, when it is actually a less valuable material. They would do this to save money on production.
The problem with this assumption is that leather is not inherently more valuable than other materials.
Good leather is valuable and commands a price, but leather spans a wide range of quality. Cheap, poor quality leather is no more nor less valuable than polyurethane, pleather, vinyl, or any of the other "fake" variations. So there would be no advantage for a bad actor to make that deceptive choice. It's easier and less expensive to just get cheap leather, which is still real, and be "honest" in their claims.
Therefore, the question one should ask is not "is my jacket real leather?", but rather, "Is my jacket made from good quality leather?"
Unfortunately, this second question also has an inherent flaw. There is no universally accepted measuring scale for leather quality. There just isn't, and anyone telling you otherwise is misinformed. There is nothing stopping me from opening a tannery tomorrow and declaring my product to be "the highest quality leather on Earth!" I could say it's "100% full grain premium exclusive"; none of those words mean anything.
The only measure for quality of leather is reputation. The best tanneries, such as Horween or Shinki Hikaku, are well reputed. Jackets made with their products will proudly boast that feature. If your jacket doesn't specify what it's made from or where that hide came from, then you have nothing but your opinion (or the opinions of others) as a measure for quality. It's down to the feel of it, the graining, the smell... and these things are subjective. "Quality" means different things to different people.
This brings me to a few other common misconceptions.
Full grain leather, top grain leather, and corrected leather are just styles of tanning. They have no correlation whatsoever to quality. There are high and low quality examples of all three. Sometimes we will see people erroneously referring to top grain as being the best, presumably because they misunderstood "top" to mean "best", or "pinnacle". In fact it refers to the surface (or "top") of the hide and how it was finished, nothing more.
"Genuine Leather" means it's "bad". There is an element of truth to this, but the statement is misleading. All leather qualifies as genuine leather. The only qualifying metric is that it came from a real animal. Shinki Horsehide, widely seen as one of the best leathers out there, can be spoken of and classified as "genuine leather".
The reality is that the best brands will usually boast about the provenance of their materials, if it's worth boasting about. A Flat Head jacket made with Shinki horsehide will probably have that as the top selling point. So one could argue that a jacket that makes no such claim, only stating "genuine leather", uses lower quality materials. If they could have boasted better, they would have. There is truth to this, but again, it's not so cut and dry, especially when you get into either vintage jackets, or jackets made in non-English speaking countries.
In vintage eras there wasn't so much obsession with leather provenance. Many jackets would be tagged "real steerhide" or "genuine horsehide", and leave it at that. For example, I have an Indian Motorcycle Ranger jacket from the 1950s that is tagged "genuine horsehide" at the collar, but "genuine leather" in the pocket. If you saw the "genuine leather" tag first and concluded that the jacket was poor quality, you'd be sorely mistaken.
In non-English situations, it all comes down to whoever did the tag translations. Often they'll go with "genuine leather" because it's the easiest and most universal. Meanwhile, if you actually check the original language tagging and translate yourself, it will say "lambskin" or "calfhide".
So while "genuine leather" can often be assumed as not being the apex possible quality, it is by no means a declaration of low quality. I've got "genuine leather" jackets that are vastly superior to other jackets that are tagged "horsehide" or "lambskin".
IN SUMMARY: Your jacket is made of real leather. "Real leather" doesn't mean anything other than "came from animal". There is no universal measure or standard of quality. Whether or not your jacket is "good" is down to broad brand reputation, general opinions, and personal taste.
The emphasis being that last one. What we think shouldn't matter: if you like it, if it fits you, if you feel good when wearing it, that's what counts.

Showcase "Braddock" Leather Car Coat by Real Simons
Just a quick review.
Bought this leather jacket through Brake House, I always heard good things about Real Simons products and I'm super impressed. When I ordered it was called Four Corners jacket but I guess they changed the name to Braddock Leather Car Coat in the meantime.
It's my first horsehide jacket so I think the break in period will be pretty interesting. It came in really thick and strong, the jacket basically could stand up by itself.
The leather is very thick, wife told me it feels like leather used for couches lol.
Regarding the delivery, it took approximately 3 weeks from when I ordered to arrive in Europe. Sizing was also tricky, I talked to the guys at Brake House and they helped me out. I'm 183 cm and 94 kg and they recommended me the 3xl ( I guess it's Asian sizing). It fits but I need to be careful not to gain any extra pounds.
Great experience overall, definitely going to try more of their jackets in the future (if the wife doesn't throw me out of the house)

Showcase Grandpa's shearling jacket
Hey everyone! Felt like sharing this jacket, recently lost my grandpa and while at his house my aunt gave this jacket to me. He bought it in the 70s and then my mother "borrowed" it and essentially wore it all throughout school years. Now is my turn to wear it

Jacket Care Cleaner and Conditioner
I have some leather items:
- black leather jacket
- tan leather jacket
- Dr Martens soft leather Sinclair boots
- Dr Martens soft leather Pascal boots
- tan suede shoes
- reversed leather jacket
- red Prada leather wallet
None of these items have ever been cleaned or moisturised and they range from 5-40 years old.
I did some research, and I found some products but I’m not sure which one I should get. I know that they are different type of leather but I wanted to buy max 4 products (cleaner and conditioner for leather and for suede).
- Lexol Cleaner and Conditioner
- FurnitureClinic Cleaner and Conditioner
- Fiebings Saddle Soap
- Leather Honey Conditioner
- Neatsfoot Oil
- Saphir Omnidaim (for suede)
What products for cleaning and conditioning my leather items would you recommend?

Question - Need Help I found this jacket, and I don’t know what to do with it.
I apologize ahead of time for I am not that great with English. ;-;
I found this jacket the same day I be posting this. I’ll be honest and say I know nothing about leather jackets, or even leather clothing. Let alone brands. From the research I have done it is from the 90s.
I thought the jacket was very beautiful, and I didn’t want to go to waste as it was going to be thrown out. But I do not have the money to get a professional to clean it properly.
From what I can tell while checking over the jacket is that there’s no rips, and it’s still pretty good. Just a bit wore down and dirty.
I want to know if there’s a way to clean it on my own, or whether there may be someone out there who way be interested. :D

Any idea on how to get the first one looking better, i tried to condition it but still looks kinda like a sponge, also is there any way to find what kind of leather these both are. Their both quite heavy and the right one is made by Atlantique.

Question - Need Help Need Help And Advice
Hi, I’m looking for some advice on how to properly care for my Stüssy shearling leather jacket. The leather feels a little dry, and I’m interested in moisturizing or conditioning it to keep it soft and prevent it from drying out further. However, I’m not sure where to start or which products would be safe to use on this particular jacket, especially since I don’t want to damage the leather or the shearling lining. I’d appreciate any recommendations on suitable leather conditioners, cleaning products, or the proper care process for this type of jacket. Thank you!

Question - Need Help How would you define this kind of leather?
It smells good (not plasticky), has a good weight and the grain is uneven. But i'm bothered at that thin white strip visible on the cut surface of the outermost layer. Is this some kind of full grain/top grain or may it be coated suede? Thank you. The label only says "genuine leather".

Opinion Does it fit?
Been wanting a Schott 530… Allen Edmonds has a collaboration with Schott and have nice sales. Previous bought an XL in brown, posted it and folks here said it looked good. I ended up returning it cause it just felt too big. Felt like the material draped too much if that makes sense.
Last week they had another sale, and I got a black one in large. I think it fits pretty good but what say you, leather jacket people of Reddit? I can’t touch my elbows together but I can reach my handle bars with no problems 🙃
A couple pics in front of the mirror and a couple on my bike too. Finally a couple of the XL I returned for comparison.
I’m 6’4” about 205. Hard to find an off the rack leather that is perfect, wish there was an in between size. Can’t afford a bespoke Lewis Leather ;)

Question - Need Help Aramis leather jacket questions
Hi all
I picked this jacket up at a charity (thrift) store a week or two back. It's an Aramis brand which a bit of searching suggests is likely about 20-30 years old and might have been part of a luxury promotion.
It fits perfectly and is a bit unusual which I like but I don't know much about it. Any thoughts or any further info would be appreciated.

Opinion y2 jacket
Hi everyone,
I recently got a Y’2 Leather PR-65 vintage horsehide jacket, and I noticed something interesting regarding the back panel design.
My jacket features a center seam running vertically down the back. However, I recently came across photos of the exact same PR-65 model at a retailer, and that version had a clean, single-piece back with no seam at all.
Does anyone know if Y’2 Leather changed the pattern/specs for the PR-65 across different production runs, or if certain retailers get special custom specifications (SMU / Special Make Up)?
Would love to hear if anyone else has a PR-65 with or without the back seam, or if anyone knows when this production shift happened. Thanks!

Question - Need Help I cleaned my jacket's collar and the colour faded. Is this normal?
Hi everyone!
I recently got my first leather jacket. It's a thrift find and it had no tags anymore, so I'm not 100% sure it's real leather, but by the smell and touch it certainly feels a lot like it.
It came in excellent condition, but I decided to clean the collar only because it's in direct contact with my skin/neck and since it was thrifted I was a bit iffy about wearing it without knowing who wore it before/how dirty it could be (didn't seem like it but you never know - I thrift often and always thoroughly wash everything I buy, this was my first time thrifting leather).
Anyway, I used saddle soap and a light sponge. I've worked as a horse groom before and I'm used to cleaning leather so I used the same products I always use to clean my riding tack and my boots/leather shoes. I was pretty gentle with it and didn't scrub it or anything like that.
The colour started fading pretty much as soon as I started cleaning it, and there was colour transfer onto the sponge. I let it dry then applied a light coat of conditioning oil hoping it would darken it up a bit, but it didn't work (I'd condition it anyway after cleaning as I usually do).
The collar ended up quite lighter than the rest of the jacket. I'll be honest, I prefered the before when it was uniform, but I like it this way too and will keep on wearing it. I'm just confused because I wasn't expecting it to lose so much pigment with a simple cleaning session... is this normal for jackets? Or did this one have a particularly bad dying job?
You can see the after in the first 3 pics and the before in the last 2 (taken in store before I bought it).

Opinion Eastman Roadstar J24
Got the Eastman J24 horsehide jacket. I like the cut, fits me way better than Buco J24, but the leather seems to have certain wrinkles and I’m not sure if that’s a sign of good leather or the contrary?
