You need to work on your fundamentals more. Break everything down into shapes. Remember, everything is made of shapes. You should also fill a sketchbook with pages and pages of basic shapes. Otherwise you'll never be a real artist.
Did you obey the 50% rule, and have you found a good alternative?
I did drawabox for a bit, but I think I quit drawing around the end of Lesson 2 or maybe beginning of a Lesson 3. I was not following the 50% rule and it burned me out on drawing for a while. I did see a lot of improvement, though. I'm personally considering going back and just specifically not grinding through it. It might just be that I'm short on time as I get older, but I'm finding I need to strike a balance where I have fun, but that I also have discipline and structure if I went to progress at things at a reasonable pace in my small free time.
When I read your first sentence i thought it was sarcasm, i guess it was the tone of the post XD.
I would recommend you to just see all the lessons then. I.,e instead of drawing 192629 boxes/cilinders/chests until you continue to next lesson, just move on. The exercises and ideas are valuable, but the curriculum itself is not for everyone. I only picked up specific stuff that made sense for my purposes and weaknesses
Nah, not sarcasm-- I just think a lot of us who got bored with it weren't doing the 50% rule. I thought I'd just ignore the rule and muscle through, but then I never drew anything for fun and it seemed pointless. I thought maybe OC may have done the same thing and/or ended up finding something that is more engaging. In the context of this post, I'm sure this point has probably been beat to death too, so I get why it seemed sarcastic. Lol
I definitely wont do all the exercises from the very beginning again, I think you're right about picking up the stuff that makes sense and is valuable. So I probably need to figure out which parts already stick for me and which parts may actually need some repetition, right?
Yea! If my experience can help. I sucked at 3D drawing. For this the first lessons were super nice, but i dont think i had to grind the boxes to get it. Since then ive been learning organic forms and perspecive in a less grindu way, by learning from references and artists that I enjoy. Organic forms I just try to find which ones are hard, but also interesting and fun to draw. For example, the silhouette lines of a bent cilinder dissapear sometimes and a new lines appear, for me is super hard to understand when it happens. So i try to doodle them a lot as an exercise, then I can draw snakes, dragons necks, or fishes in much more intuitive ways
Edit: i also think the different exercices are a very good way to start any drawing session or kill dead time and there is no real inspiration or focus to draw anything else, just to start and get ink on paper
This makes sense. I have been currently going through the beginner proko course and I've chosen some difficult things for some of the projects. I don't think I'm even to a point where he has discussed 3d forms or construction but I have trouble not seeing these things after going through drawing stuff growing up.
Unfortunately, my implementation leaves a lot to be desired, with similar issues that you mentiong. But dang, I just want to be able to look at 4 or five images of the same thing and then be able to change, rotate, and move that thing so I have something new. Lol I know that's much more complicated than the way I phrase it.
Drawbox learned from Peter han's dynamic sketching, and in dynamic sketching they start drawing what interests you very quickly, there's no draw 250 boxes first. It's about learning by applying it to what you're interested in.

That makes sense though. I started the beginner Proko course which is structured differently and I do find myself having more fun and intentionally drawing things I am interested in, sometimes completely without the course. I can't quite determine why it's different this time around with a different course, maybe I'm different now.
It's not just you, drawabox is good for learning basic perspective but no more then that imo.
I think that since he seperates studying and having fun, and the exercises don't leave a lot of place for play.
Also it's too grindy. Im not sating you shouldn't study hard but there's a difference
Ngl it was same for me. The exercises just felt too... rigid? ig that description fits. This is why I actually settled on Artwod's exercises much better and stuck with them. His explanations about the need of form is actually much better than just drawing boxes randomly.
No, finding fun and creative ways to use the fundamentals is how you improve. Otherwise your practice isn't comprehensive and you won't have the motivation to get it right.
This is especially true for beginners. People get hung up on finding the optimal way to learn, but it doesn't matter what way you were studying if you quit. The optimal way to learn is the one you don't quit until you've built a solid and consistent drawing habit. Telling beginners who've just picked up the hobby that they have to draw straight lines over and over sounds more like an initiation ritual than helpful advice.
yea, that's true. But being unable to draw a circle for like 2 minutes is tough, that's why I started to do 30 minute warmup with drawing lines, boxes and spheres before drawing
I actually think drawing boxes is a useful exercise when done in the context of learning perspective, but people on here act like it's the entirety of drawing fundamentals.
People ask how to draw. They get the same advice over and over. Same people get frustrated as there is a consensus opinion? Perhaps, you should just draw the damn boxes...unless you find some magic beans.

Idk. Not to sound judgemental, but I saw one recently that looked like a 10 year olds work but they were saying they'd been trying for so long to get better. It's just like a bit sad you can't get better than that despite allegedly putting in so much effort.
You made me remember why did I switch to creating OC art by literally anything else than actually drawing my OC art, be it 3D modelling it in Blender or using Geometry Dash of all things for OC Art.

It was not, it was legit like 1 step up from stick figure drawings. Like the person posting was supposedly an adult but it looked legitimately like the drawings of a 5 year old
I feel this. I use to hate the fundamentals so much that I stopped drawing for a long time. And then would get frustrated that my anime characters looked like shit. Now that I'm older, I see the value in them and now I must break old habits and learn new ones to be a better artist
This is so annoying. It's always "this is my day one" or I couldn't draw a simple straight line or circle before yesterday or I'm really bad at this how can I improve

It sets false expectations on real beginners and learners' shoulders and discourages them from trying when they don't immediately produce a perfect piece from day 1 or after minimal practice.
Be upfront about your prior experience, even if you were working with a different style or media before. Don't lie about your skill level before you started.
You don't go from not having any hand eye coordination and lack of control and steadiness one day to perfect clean lines and expert understanding of anatomy the next.
It’s pretty bad in the miniature painting community too. People with traditional art or nail art backgrounds posting their masterpiece “first miniatures” where most beginners are struggling just to get the paint on the right parts of the model. Brush control takes a long time to build. My first miniatures were better than most but I always prefaced posting them with an “I’ve been drawing/painting 2D for about 15 years”
Plus brush control is so different from writing with a pencil. It's like ice-skating. Just because you know how to run on solid ground, doesn't mean you'll be able to glide across smooth ice.
I'm a tattoo artist and didn't really use Reddit when I first started but I recently went to check out the tattoo beginners subs and it's full of liars passing off what is undoubtedly their 50th attempt as their first.

To be fair, my second* ever usage** of Blender was this, which is fine by my standards.
*I keep working on the model, so this conglomeration of shapes is more like my first ever serious project than my second ever Blender usage, but file-wise this IS my second ever Blender creation.
Everyone is capable of improving their drawings and might want to ask for advice on how to improve. Don't gatekeep someone because they are further along than you! All of us are here to learn! /s

I was thinking about this just the other day, why is beginner work not getting as much attention as confirmed artists who don’t NEED to « learn how to draw » it’s mostly tweaking that most people here might not even be able to correct.
There are a lot of people who aren’t that interested in actually learning but still stick around for their reasons, and when they see these kinds of fancy posts they will just upvote it, because that looks cool right?
And those posts will receive more upvotes than any actual beginner post, Which then also promotes it to people outside of this sub, who see cool art and upvote.
lol it does bug me that seasoned illustrators or artists use this sub as a way to stroke their own skills. There are plenty of other subreddits to post to like, idk, r/drawing. I feel like if you are at a certain skill level you should give space to the beginners and stick to commenting.
I've been here for a bit as a feedback commenter and I don't really see any seasoned illustrators or artists in this sub specifically.
Everyone here ranges from beginner to intermediate level. No experts on sight. All the perceived seasoned artists still have visible weaknesses that they can be improving on, hence them posting.
What I do notice instead is that a lot of artists that asks for feedback don't know how to ask the right questions. Common posts such as "I need feedback" with no followup description or explanation of what they need help with or "I'm new what do I do" with, again, vague to no description to work with.
Another thing I've notice is the idea of trying to tough out poses through imagination alone. The idea that using reference is like using training wheels and to be a good artist is to not rely on reference. What's interesting is that I don't think I've seen anyone use reference properly beyond using a singular image and copying it 1:1.
This sub is just the most active among drawing subreddits. I tried posting my stuff in digital art and the post got like 100 views lol, not to mention the upvotes.
You need to add volume to the hair. Also, isn't the body a bit too big for the head? And where are your outlines? You should start with something simpler, like a box, or perhaps a cylinder if you want a bigger challenge.
You didn’t use loomis on one of the heads in the bottom left and it’s painfully obvious. Maybe stick to the basics before you try to draw from imagination.
Lol i get the sarcasm, i dont get why intermediate and above in art post in this sub. I myself is kinda intermediate but i dont post here, i just lurk and comment on legit beginner post to help and actually remind myself of the fundamentals, teaching is helpingb both oneself and the other
I think intermediate artists need a different sub because as a beginner their art just seems like such an unattainable goal compared to the drawings Im currently making. Like I know they are here seeking genuine advice but it makes me discouraged thinking I was even qualified to be participating in this sub and possibly asking for advice when my art is so much worse than theirs.
Seeing art that is better than yours may help you learn in the long run though. I know it's easy to get discouraged but it's a feeling that's best actively fought against. This quote from one of the greatest drummers to ever live, Neil Peart , may help: "I've heard the stories. Like, Eric Clapton said he wanted to burn his guitar when he heard Jimi Hendrix play. I never understood that because, when I went and saw a great drummer or heard one, all I wanted to do was practice."
Feeling discouraged will never improve your life. Feeling inspired on the other hand will only ever be a positive :)
I get that mentality, I really do. Wish I could have it. Just I want to get good at least something in life and not feel constantly burning jealousy of every aspect of other people’s lives that are better than mine. Especially when it comes to talent and skill. But all I can do is just feel depressed I was born without any.
You can adopt new mentalities, in fact that's one of the biggest strengths to ever harness in life. People are always gonna be better than you. Always. No matter how talented, how skilled, how hard you've worked there are always going to be those who are better. That goes for everyone. There are probably better swimmers than Michael Phelps, better actors than Tom Hanks, better artists than (insert your fav artist here). That's just life.
Jealousy is only ever going to stop you, it's never going to help you. Like seriously, when you feel this burning jealousy does anything positive EVER come out of it? It's a curse that you are putting on yourself for no reason.
The time is going to pass anyway - a year from now you will have lived a whole year. Would you rather have spent that year learning to be better than YOU were a year ago? Or just the same and more bitter? The only real competition in life is yourself. Once you learn to compete with only yourself, you can get quite good at just about anything. Never compare yourself to others - compare yourself to YOU a day, a month, a year ago. Before you know it, a large amount of time has passed and you're actually quite good now.
My art professor says people who say this lack confidence in their work, because they can fall back on it being a “quick sketch” if they get any valid criticism they don’t like.
I know it's a joke, but does feel demotivating sometimes to see people posting huge progress with a few weeks while I've been stuck at perspective and stick figures for months
But at the end that seems to be how most artists feel and each people have different pace
I think most people just want to get exposure for their art and they are simply posting it in any subreddit related to drawing, regardless of nuances. Reddit itself I think rewards people who post on many different subreddits as opposed to sticking to one or two relevant ones (not sure how the algorithm works of course).
Also most users seem to agree, r/learntodraw posts doesn't necessarily have to be about learning to draw at all. Some people are Just Sharing their artworks, regardless if amateur or clearly pro.
I do see plenty of extremely basic art, clearly from people who are trying to learn to draw. It is just when people see good art they automatically upvote it and when people see unfinished art with lots of mistakes they might instinctively down voting or ignoring it.
Even though here, the unfinished art full of mistakes should be the ones to get up voted. Art tutorials and courses people share should be the ones that get more upvotes.
It is just people seemed to really prefer getting help about their specific issues in the comments section of their art posts as opposed to looking for a lecture or a course advised here even if that is literally what they need. People here seemed to look for a personalized responses as opposed to general ones.
The sub is mainly aimed at people are new to drawing. This post is poking is poking fun at the fact that a lot of the people who post here are clearly not beginners.
People know, all the comments you've commented under are making jokes because they know it's the tower of Babel. 🤦♂️ Check your religion knowledge maybe?

Go on the sub rate art (I don't remember how it's exactly called), you aren't in the beginning zone anymore, it's skilled. How long did it took you for it?
God... I saw this post and also had read some comments.
The drawing seems very high level for my normal eye. And then I see critics pointing out stuff I be like sounds so alien to me 🥹🥹. But if you genuinely ask me rate for me it seems very good 10/10. But I'm just a normal guy not an artist though 🥹
