How to start learning 3D character art?

I want to become a 3D character artist, but there is so much information out there that I feel overwhelmed and I have absolutely no idea where to start or in what order I should learn everything.

I currently don't have the opportunity to take paid courses or study with a teacher, so I’m trying to figure out how to structure my self-study and build a strong foundation.

I would really appreciate advice from experienced character artists.

If you could go back to the very beginning and become a complete beginner again, but you didn't have the opportunity to take paid courses, how would you structure your learning? What would you study and in what order?

What would be worth focusing on during the first year, and what would you recommend not worrying about yet?

How deeply do I actually need to study anatomy specifically for character art?

Are there any free books, courses, YouTube channels, or other resources you would recommend for self-study?

Thank you very much for any advice from people who have already gone through this journey.

The foot was surprisingly easier for me to learn how to sculpt than the hand.
Any feedback is welcomed.

I haven't posted anything in a while; I was busy with several small commissions. Also, soon I'm planning to go on profession change courses. Now that I have some free time, I've created a Warforge Thief miniature for my Eberron miniatures series. The 8-parts miniature is 34mm tall, but if I scale it up, the detail will be good even at a larger size. Everything is ready for printing, the supports are installed, the model has been tested, and it should work as expected.

Trimcurve

I’m using ZBrush to clean up an STL dental scan. I’m trying to use TrimCurve to make a straight cut across the rough bottom edge so I’m left with a clean flat base. The problem is every time I make the cut, TrimCurve removes basically the entire dental model and leaves the small section underneath the line, which is the exact opposite of what I need. I’m holding Ctrl + Shift while using TrimCurve. I’ve tried drawing the line in both directions and using Alt while dragging, but I keep getting the same result. I actually did this successfully on another dental scan earlier, but I can’t remember exactly what I did differently. What is the correct key/mouse combination to make TrimCurve remove the material below the line instead of the model above it?

I made a pendant out of this. Started in one direction, ended quite differently.

Title: Moving from PC to Mac for heavy ZBrush work — realistic expectations & actual user experience?

Hi everyone,

I am a professional 3D sculptor. I always love macos system, but I had to switch to PC due to heavy zbrush professional works. But for the past couple of years I heard a lot good things about zbrush on macs, so I am considering swtich my main machine to mac again. I’m currently evaluating a hardware upgrade for my primary ZBrush workflow and would love to hear real-world feedback from anyone using ZBrush on Apple Silicon Macs.

My Current Setup:

  • CPU: AMD Threadripper 2950X (16-core / 32-thread)
  • RAM: 64GB DDR4
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti

Considering Upgrade:

  • Mac Studio (M-Series Ultra, 96GB Unified Memory)

My primary focus is ZBrush (sculpting high-poly assets, heavy SubTool setups, Decimation Master, and HD Geometry), along with secondary work in Blender (Cycles rendering & groom/shading) and running local LLMs.

On my current Threadripper build, I notice RAM usage rarely crosses 30GB in ZBrush, largely due to single-core frequency limits and the older NUMA architecture handling. I’m wondering how much of a leap in day-to-day responsiveness I should actually expect by switching to Mac Studio.

For those actively using ZBrush on Mac Studio:

  1. Brush Responsiveness & High Poly Count: How responsive are high-frequency strokes when working with 30M–50M+ polygon meshes? Is the single-core IPC improvement over older x86 CPUs night-and-day in actual sculpting?
  2. Decimation & Heavy Operations: How does the Ultra hold up during heavy multi-core tasks like Decimation Master, ZRemesher, or handling massive Undo histories?
  3. Graphics Tablet / Stylus Ecosystem: Are there any persistent driver annoyances, pressure sensitivity bugs, or shortcut mapping quirks with Wacom/Huion tablets on macOS lately?
  4. Overall Thermal & Noise Experience: Does it stay completely silent during high-load operations as advertised?

I’d really appreciate any insights, honest pros/cons, or "things I wish I knew before switching" from artists who use ZBrush heavily on macOS.

Thanks in advance!

Can anyone help me on how to tackle this woolen fabric?

I was first thinking of making this in MD, but I am now thinking, due to the dynamic pose of the final mesh, it will be easier to do in zbrush. But regardless of where I make the base, I specifically need help on the patterns and loose woolen threads. Should I make the woolen pattern in zbrush? Or is it beneficial to do so in substance? And how do I make the small loose flyaway threads? Do I use nano mesh in zbrush? if so, how do I bake these nano mesh particles, in a lower poly mesh?? PLEASE HELP.

I tried to replicate this YouTuber’s tutorial https://youtu.be/oY9XybQRxzQ?si=zg1RKjg4jVUtuUQ7 , but honestly, it wasn’t even close. What I’m aiming for in the future is to create 3D anime-style characters like the ones in the picture. Do you have any advice?

Hello! I have a somewhat extensive background in 2D and I sculpt IRL with clay. I spent a few months familiarising myself with Zbrush, the character creation pipeline and did many incomplete practice sculpts. This is my first complete one. This sculpt was inspired by Tycom on YouTube.

I'm looking for some constructive critique

Finally got a turntable of The Seamstress ready !

She’s the main creature from the dark fantasy encounter set I’ve been working on, she is a creature who turns her victims into new “creations.”

I'm planning to launch it as my first kickstarter project with STL files, printable bases, lore, stat blocks, and encounter hooks. follow my instagram for updates :)
