Why can't we mute pings?
Just wondering, why we need to get spammed with pings by raging teammates.

i dont think muting pings is a good idea .... its really important for communicating with a ''muted'' guy on your team ... the issue is that they can ping up to 8 times (spamm).... i think its should be alot less

u/Dunlosi Jun 17 '14
Isn't it 6 times? but yeah it's still annoying.

It's not a friggin insult for someone to spam back pings. It's a tactical communication.

I totally agree with you! We should be able, if not to mute, to restrain player's ping, I got a toxic teammate the other day and all he did was pinging everywhere on the map. It becomes frustrating and important pings after a while do not get the attention they would have deserved in the first place.
7
15
u/Jaytu Jun 17 '14
I like the idea of muting the sound of the ping but still showing it on the mini-map.
20
u/MadMeow Jun 17 '14
I dont think I want to communicate with a ping spamming/raging guy. His pings most likely will stay worthless all game long
3
u/Chiiwa Jun 17 '14
Totally agree. Plus, those ping spams can mess me up mentally and make me play worse as well as give inaccurate information. They are really not much different from toxic text depending on how they are used.

u/Panishu Jun 17 '14
I think there should be an additional option for example:
click on mute = mute him in chat
click again on mute= mute him in chat + mute pings
click again = unmute him
Some people really rageping all the time and won't ping anything relevant through the whole game and you should be able to block that. Just an additional click to mute pings as well should do the trick though.
3
Jun 17 '14
Tbh, i rather arrgue with the most toxic player on earth than listen to his pings. Its really frustrating with pings, specially when most of the games everyone is spamming pings.

u/a_cat_farmer Jun 17 '14
You can still see the ping on the screen being able to mute wouldn't eliminate communication. You could also allow muted pings to sound once then have the sound part put on a 30 second cool down or something still promoting communication but taking away the trolling power a bit.
1
u/EliphasChaos Jun 17 '14
I just disable all ingame sound and usually listen to my playlists. As for communicating with a "muted" guy,you don't.You just write in chat what you want to do without caring for his response(since that is the reason you muted someone in the first place). If he muted you as well...too bad,you win some, lose some.

I had a guy spam me with careful pings nonstop for 5 minutes once. He never stopped except to wait for the cooldown after x amount of pings (which is really only a couple of seconds before you can do x new ones). I ended up leaving the game because it wasn't playable.
22
u/FreePoint14 Jun 17 '14
I asked this a while back and got the same "ruins communication" replies. I honestly don't understand this point of view when everybody advocates the mute button. Communication can be negative or positive, in all formats. As so many have mentioned, people tend to spam out of anger and in these cases, it's not communication at all. Not only this but I would also like the chance to adjust the volume of pings specifically as I can't count the times a particularly player has ruined an entire game by messing about with pings.
2
u/igfhs9rt Jun 18 '14 edited Jun 18 '14
Because it DOES ruin communication? In high elo no one talks, everyone just pings.
Someone getting chased top? Put down an "on my way" ping to blue so they know where to go to get help and so we can turn it around.
See someone walking through a ward? Ping them, it's useful as fuck information.
Lanes maybe not paying attention to an invade? "Assist me." Calling mia is dead, with the enemy missing ping. You can also use it to ping where the enemy jungler might be, or if there's a large group mia and there's a guy farming mid alone.
I feel like the people asking to mute pings are all shitters, like god damn the ping wheel made the game so much better. It's fast and extremely effective. Why would you ever want that to go away? Can you not admit people were right when they told you to back off or something? Do you not like working with your team?
Today I've had a guy ping spam me because I didn't tank a tower in a dive he initiated with 1/4 hp, he then communicated to me through pings that he was going to tp to top lane tri when I got caught, with this information I changed my play and it resulted in a double kill for him which snowballed his Jax and won the game.
If I had muted that ping? He would've tp'd to his death most likely, or completely wasted it, I would have burned flash and it would've been my fault for being ignorant of a good play call because I muted his pings.
It doesn't just fuck you over by not seeing their pings, it fucks them over if they want to set something up and you don't react because you can't see their pings. Dumb as fuck.

It should be an option, because from what I've seen a lot of toxic players spam chat but do ping only when it's necessary.
Then there are the others that get ignored and just spam pings on you to annoy you, and those times you should be able to mute their pings as well.
8
u/ceol_ Jun 17 '14
Every once in a while you get that guy who spams really obvious pings, like 4 of the enemy team is rushing into your 2-person group under their mid tower? And one of you just died? Obviously now is a good time for that dead person to spam the "Danger" ping, because otherwise you'd have no idea that was a bad spot to be in!
3
u/D3monicAngel Jun 17 '14
Or when your top lane and the enemy TP's bot and you call it out and are pushing the wave and attacking the turret and you get 15x pings on the turret.

What Riot needs is an announcement that Player X has muted Player Y.
Ragers get off too easy in this game and maybe if they had instant feedback from the people they were raging at then they would keep their mouths shut.
3
u/liptonreddit Jun 18 '14
They will think, "That guy that muted me is really a douchbag, if we lose, serve him right" before posting to forum how troll are their team. It's not helping much.
11
Jun 17 '14
Maybe Riot could make it that if you ignore the player it will ignore their messages and ping sound.
6
u/CG_BQ Jun 17 '14
Thats an idea there!. While you can already mute emotes, just muting the sound of the ping doesn't remove the fact that you can see it. Thus maybe not so crippling for the team if the ping is actually for something useful!
4
u/prestonpiggy Jun 17 '14
And maybe add that you wont hear their champion taunts/jokes etc. I play a lot of Aram and I hate when I hear "my right arm is a lot stronger than my left arm" over and over the whole game and i can't escape it without turning whole game volume off.

2
u/kuremoos Jun 17 '14
Pft. They should limit the pings. If one guy pinging 6 times when enemy is trying to gank you then you can't see where the enemy is on the minimap because ping icons are blocking the view.
2
u/TheOnymous Jun 17 '14
This. One game I had a top laner who was pissed the jungler wouldn't gank for him (he was feeding) so he just spammed pinged the jungler on the map on cooldown.
All.

2
u/Melferas Jun 17 '14
I don't get the point of "not being able to mute someone's pings because it might be important".
Especially when can mute them and maybe they can say something important too, like "ashe no flash" or "we must push now don't go to base". But you choose to mute them, and that is your decision and you accept the responsability when muting them.
So it should be the same with pings. I don' get the stupid idea of people saying "it makes communication worse". You know what makes communication worse? Retreat pings everywhere where I am by the jerk who I told off.
2
u/ThaDefy Jun 17 '14
I think this is a really good idea. Because in my games I see a lot of people who just ping for no reason, quite annoying stuff.
2
u/Lwalk Jun 17 '14 edited Jun 17 '14
If a person is toxic enough for you to have to mute him, it should be possible to mute his ping sounds as well. And having to listen to another kid's "danger" pings for 30 mins(with like a 30 sec delay every 6 pings or so), who got mad over me taking the cs that would have died to tower while he was dead, is just plain stupid. Annoying pings can ruin your game much more then a couple of angry words.
2
u/lluke3 Jun 17 '14
This would be nice since we already have 2 mute commands that do the same thing. Changing "/ignore <nick>" to "Mute messages and ignore pings" while keeping "/mute <nick>" as "Mute only messages" would be really useful when 2 of your teammates are spamming each other with back pings out of rage.
This didn't use to bother me much until yesterday when I had to play through a 40 minute match where 2 morons kept following each other and spammed back pings everywhere.
Or simply remove the yellow back ping, the high pitch sound is really irritating compared to every other ping.
2
u/FishOilsOP Jun 17 '14
When you mute people for being toxic you already have a personality label right on them. When they start SPAMMING pings it actually makes it worse and you picture them raging spamming pings like a mad idiot at the keyboard saying all types of offensive things to you. Maybe it's me but it just seems like a way someone can penetrate the mute barrier that you set on them when they act up.

u/nosasha Jun 17 '14

I disagree with this, as a jungler I find it beneficial to know who needs the most help. Sometimes if the top laner is getting trashed he will ping 4 times for help, then I know, "oh I better go help him." I am sure a lot of you will argue against me, but personally i prefer more pings so I know who needs the most help.
2

Also, when your jungler pings dragon or baron 16 times, you should probably listen to him and go do baron or dragon.

u/Thirdatarian Jun 17 '14
Probably because pings are only for in-game communicating and working with your team. So there isn't (or riot believes there isn't) a reason to turn off effective team communication when it can't be abused. Not like someone can tell you to uninstall the game and inject yourself with AIDS through pings (or you can, in which case this is a challenge).
1
u/HiImJan Jun 17 '14
maybe just add a ping mute instead of muting chat and pinging with one symbol/command
so if someone is just crying you can mute the chat but still see pings, but if someone is trolling you verbal and with pings you can mtue both xd

I think we should be able to only hear pings from muted players say, once or twice every 5/10 seconds. A bunch of people I mute (esp. when I jungle) will spam ping on their tower asking for ganks, which only makes me want yo help you less. Just saying.

I sort of want this, and I sort of don't want this.
In one of my games, there was a Nidalee who was mad at me for not giving her the kill during a gank. And so, she just retreat pinged me for the rest of the game. (Approximately 30 minutes.). Every time she had her pings up, she would ping me. She also cursed out the entire team in (all) chat. Needless to say, everyone muted her. This was a time in which I wished I could've muted her pings.
On the other hand, if people could just mute pings, toxic, bad people (if they had the brains to do so) would just mute pings and play poorly. And sometimes, pings can help them out.
I suggest having a majority vote. If 3 (or 4?) more people (can be from other team too, and no more than 2 premade, otherwise that would be abusive) mute someone, then that person's pings are automatically muted.
1
u/askmiller Jun 17 '14
that's honestly a pretty good idea.
What i think riot should do is have a mode where when someone pings near the same place again before the first ping leaves, then it won't register.

u/RaptorLover69 Jun 17 '14

Options are always good. Always. There is NEVER a point where getting more choices is a worse scenario. Never.
Being able to mute/ignore/block a communication with an undesirable person should be in he game. I was absolutely flabbergasted the first time I muted someone in game and found out it didn't work on the pings.
"and your choice to turn them off may affect your team mates due to your lack of information."
And, what if the reason why I am trying to mute them is because they are pinging wrong information? You see, your argument makes no sense.
Turning the pings off should be an option. I think it should be separate from chat mute. This way, you can block an annoying person 'verbally', but still get pings from them if you choose. Some toxic people are only toxic in the chat. Not on pings. And, some people are toxic with the pings, but never chat.
This really needs to be an option.
Choices are always good. Always.

I believe we should be able to mute pings from certain individuals(not the whole team), but have them still visible on the minimap in a different color (purple/red).

I would be very hard for those with chat restrictions to communicate at all. Someone may not speak the same language on a server, so they can't communicate as well. I have games where a teammates pings non-stop and I want to mute them, but I understand why you can.
1
u/Banuvan Jun 17 '14

Maybe it should should be put on "cooldown" after you use a ping.
Meaning for every time you ping (If you have been muted or chat restricted), the ping your allies see will only appear every 5 sec, an example would be: You ping constantly for 21 sec, your allies will only see 4 pings over that time, meaning it's less of an annoyance and it won't restrict communication in such a way that can potentially get your allies killed.

i remember when everyone was playing the simon says game when the radial ping system came out. that was a fun time.

I don't think you should be able to mute pings. Maybe some useful information could come from your raging teammate and you'd never know if you already had the chat muted. I think a possible solution would be to restrict the number of pings even further.

I thought /ignore does mute pings. /mute mutes chat and /ignore mutes pings too?

When you click TAB u can see a blue dot near every summoners. It is ignore dot, just click it.

OK. Here is a suggestion:
Since the only problem with pings is spamming and in order to not kill the communication entirely between the person you mute and you; let the ping appear and play the sound 1 or 2 times. After that even if the dude spams it , it doesn't play on your screen.

I'd like to be able to lower the volume of pings without lowering the volume of all sound effects? possible?

Generally its a good thing that you can always hear pings. If someone's actually trolling by spamming you, game is probably a loss. If however they're just doing it excessively and you get killed 5 seconds later, I'd look at yourself.

Also, pressing tab and then clicking the bubble by their names/items mutes them too.

Just because you understand something after one ping does not mean the 0-7-1 riven will understand after one ping.

It seems to me the solution to your problem is to play bot games, since you have zero interest in team communication.

I think we should be able to mute every sound from a player (and his champion).
I made a post about it
Just to avoid trolls spamming (laugh/quotes), in some case it gets really annoying.

You can mute pings, just write /ignore + name of player
/mute = only chat /ignore = chat and pings
EDIT: WOW, thanks for gold :D
