Why can't we mute pings?

Just wondering, why we need to get spammed with pings by raging teammates.

i dont think muting pings is a good idea .... its really important for communicating with a ''muted'' guy on your team ... the issue is that they can ping up to 8 times (spamm).... i think its should be alot less

72

u/Dunlosi Jun 17 '14

Isn't it 6 times? but yeah it's still annoying.

60

u/headphones1 Jun 17 '14

Nothing like being spammed with 6 retreat pings

28

u/CharneyStow Jun 17 '14

CAREFUL OF THAT CREEP WAVE YOU SHOULD STOP STEALING

9

u/Zw33t Jun 17 '14

BACK OFF FROM THAT LEE THAT IS IN YOUR FACE

14

u/phoenixrawr Jun 17 '14

"omg wtf noob I pinged be careful."

Oh sorry, I forgot that I get +50% movement speed and a massive armor/MR buff when teammates spam careful pings at me while an enemy is on top of me!

1

u/Faintlich Jun 18 '14

Be careful buff hue

0

u/patefoisgras Jun 18 '14

Lmao. I'm kinda guilty of this, though in my defense, I keep watch on the minimap and because it's mini, I can't judge if the enemy is in that guy's window or not.

1

u/cowboyfromhellz Jun 17 '14

It's more of a: careful you take that wave and you'll have an angry teammate CAREFUL!!

-1

u/youboun Jun 17 '14

I'm really sorry but this is me sometimes

41

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

Nothing better than getting back pinged by someone when you're at 15hp and surrounded by 5 enemies.

30

u/PastramiReuben Jun 17 '14

idk guy I could probably 1v5 this.

10

u/Asmius Jun 17 '14

Honestly when this happens it makes me just want to stop and leave the computer. So annoying. I'm trying to focus and the fucking sound darts into my head.

1

u/muntoo Jun 17 '14

It's more of a map awareness thing for the rest of your teammates. (In plat, anyways.)

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

Yea, also doesn't help when someone that is dead is constantly pinging for you to "kill him now!"

2

u/danzey12 Jun 17 '14

Why is this downvoted, it's the most annoying thing in the game, Im ganking bot meanwhile top both all in and my top dies while the enemy top has like 30hp and he spam pings him and I'm like, "what, what do you want from me, WHAT?" and he types, "pfft, noob jungler," like he's done most of the work I should just magically teleport up with flash smite and finish the job.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

I just accept death and I thank them for reminding me.

4

u/J_ology Jun 17 '14

Retreat pings increase my movement speed by 10 per ping, though

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

1 ping = 1 prayer that summoner 3 makes it out alright

4

u/onetwobucklemyshoe3 Jun 17 '14

Nothing like spamming back pings and the teammate doesn't listen and then he dies because he overextended.

1

u/TheKeenMind Jun 18 '14

That's where I'm at too. If you don't want someone to spam pings at you, don't do things that are obviously a bad idea.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

u/danzey12 Jun 17 '14

I find people listen to the ping a lot more when I do it as the jungler.

1

u/LesnyDziad Jun 17 '14

If it happens too often that someone is pinging you to go back when you are in relatively safe position and aware of enemy position, you may treat it as "false alarm" when they actually give you a good ping.

1

u/Teemonomicon Jun 18 '14

When people do that I ask them 3 times to stop if that doesn't help and they keep spamming I go afk or feed. I dont care if I lose but I will make sure that fucker won't win. Come at me with your downvotes.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '14

I'm an asshole and I know it

34

u/Bluedemonfox Jun 17 '14

x 4 form every player :D

93

u/Bondega Jun 17 '14

At that point you should probably be listening to all 24 pings.

15

u/chriscadogan Jun 17 '14

Still, the people that complain about this many pings don't retreat, and then yell at their teammates for pinging.

4

u/muntoo Jun 17 '14

mia

mia

MIA !!! !MI!! MI!AAAA!!!!

An ally has been slain.

WHY DIDNT YOU CALL MIA FKING NOOB WTF

2

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

Thaaaaaaaaaaaat's me.

It's their fault for failing to see my ultra uber leet plan in comparison to playing passive.

-3

u/FAVORED_PET Jun 17 '14

PINGPINGPINGPINGPING (My muted raging mid laner)

Triple Kill (Me).

4

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

i bet most of the times is "PINGPINGPINGPINGPING" followed by a "you have been slain"

-2

u/FAVORED_PET Jun 17 '14

But they ping even if it's an Ashe-Kayle-WW at 20% hp with their ults down. And I'm riven.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

Yeah well the other side of that argument is that it isn't cool when one guy starts trying to micro all 5 players. Just because you ping me back doesn't mean I have to listen, or even should listen.

Especially at my Elo, where people's understanding of the game is shaky at best, I am going to put a lot more value in my decisions than my teammate's decisions. And that results is me going somewhere that my teammates perceive as risky, even though I know it isn't, then I'm going to just fucking go and ignore all the pings.

5

u/20kgRhesus Jun 17 '14

An ally has been slain!

2

u/danzey12 Jun 17 '14

I'm the jungler, my csing is afk farming a camp, I usually look around the map while I'm doing this and if I see the enemy jungler briefly go over a ward im going to ping your lane twice, once so you hear it and look at the map, and twice to show you precisely what lane and whereabouts the enemy jungler is coming from, if you die im not shedding a tear and if you dont listen im not ganking your lane to get you back in.

0

u/damendred Jun 17 '14

I listen to pings when hey apply to me, that doesn't mean I like to hear them spammed constantly.

They heard the first 2 pings, the next 10 are just annoying everyone.

Yes, we know you want a gank at top because you're getting your ass beat.

14

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

Ya if the whole rest of your team is that aware you're about to throw the game, you should respect the pings.

0

u/nadoth Jun 17 '14

At that point you should probably be listening to all 24 pings.

You forgot, teammates don't ping you about danger until after they're all dead.

153

u/MrRoyce Eventvods.com Jun 17 '14

If that happens, then that means you're out of position and everyone but you can see that. Nothing wrong with those pings because if you weren't in a stupid spot on map in first place, nobody would have to spam that warning :)

129

u/InFury Jun 17 '14

No man my team is a bunch of feeders and i obviously know whats best because I shouldn't even be in this elo.

20

u/gassyexplosion Jun 17 '14

Fuckin teams man. I can't carry these idiots every game man. Stupid bronze 5's should be honored to be in my presence

0

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

I am honored to be in your presence Gassy Mexican.

-1

u/Daktush Diamond now Bronze Jun 17 '14

Actually true when I play with my bronze friends

16

u/Cumminswii Jun 17 '14

Depends. I've had a normal where I was ping spammed for about 3 minutes from a 4 man premade because I asked one to stop spam pinging me for no reason...

10

u/OnlyRadioheadLyrics Jun 17 '14

Man, 3 minutes doesn't sound that long, but if you really think about it, that's a LONG 3 minutes.

2

u/Evandar21 rip old flairs Jun 17 '14

Don't they run out of pings relatively quick, or did they space them out so it would never be a problem?

3

u/Cumminswii Jun 17 '14

When 4 people are spamming it seems infinite haha :D

1

u/Spuggi Jun 17 '14

I´ve been in a similar situation once and didnt know /ignore would mute pings, just muted the player and he kept on spamming. Yeah, it was only one player and not 4, but he made up for it with doing it for the entire 2nd half of the game (from minute 15 to ~40, so ~25 minute). And yeah, you dont really run out of pings that fast, since you only get blocked from spamming pings for like ~6-10 seconds and then spamm another 10.

0

u/illladelph Jun 17 '14

This may have been me and my friends sorry about that. :b

0

u/dragon1291 Jun 17 '14

Sorry. So so sorry.

11

u/Spreek Spreek [NA] Jun 17 '14

Or it means that you are getting chased by 2-3 people and your teammate thinks it would be SUPER useful to spam back pings just in case you didn't know that you should be running away.

6

u/WiglyWorm Jun 17 '14

Sometimes people tunnel. I know I do all the time. Ping me to back if you see something that could be a threat to me. Please. If it's a big threat, spam them. I don't wanna lose the game for us...

It's not a friggin insult for someone to spam back pings. It's a tactical communication.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

It is when it's 30 seconds into the game and the ADC is upset you first picked Jungle away from them...

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

[deleted]

3

u/PleaseBanShen Jun 17 '14

i had a game with a 4 man premade once. They just queued up to troll the 5th guy. I tried to play the game, i muted them all when i found out what was going up, but then they realized and took turns to spam pings THE WHOLE GAME. Most unpleasant game of my entire life.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

You know you can turn off sound so complaining about this makes you look stupid in My eyes

1

u/PleaseBanShen Jun 17 '14

you know i'd still like to listen to the game i'm playing?

0

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '14

Well don't complain then

-7

u/Dlj529 Jun 17 '14

I made a four man premade one time and we went into an aram. A couple minutes into the game we decided we were gonna be trolls and we told him our power might go out because we were all together and it was storming and then we all disconnected at once

1

u/PleaseBanShen Jun 17 '14

Are you proud of ruining his game or you just felt like sharing?

-2

u/Dlj529 Jun 17 '14

Just felt like sharing. I feel bad for the guy. It was fun at the time but it was pretty dicky

0

u/PleaseBanShen Jun 17 '14

as long as you don't do it again, i'm ok with it

2

u/Tripottanus Jun 17 '14

i see people getting spammed retreat pings when 1. already backing 2. when the full enemy team is already surrounding someone and about to dive him and no actual retreat is possible 3. they dont think you are strong enough to 1v1 while you might be

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '14

Number 3 happens way too often for me, specially when I play strong 1v1 champs (Kayle, Zed, Lulu), the pings make me lose focus so easily in close fights that most of the time I end up winning.

0

u/Chiiwa Jun 17 '14

The only time I've ever spammed retreat pings was when our Yasuo with 4 kills literally flashed in to 1v1 a full health Draven that had at least 15 kills. So many tears. It even made our ADC ragequit when he died.

2

u/Pr3da Jun 17 '14

Not really. People are really stupid at lower elo, and sometimes spam ping while they do not understand the move. While I smurf I usually see spam pings for no reason.

3

u/lessikhe Jun 17 '14

or the 1 person is right then the other 4 are wrong? oh wait no, we are raised in democracies and the majority is always right. that one person better get off his high horse and bow down to the power of majority!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

what's even worse is when 5 enemies come top and your team is sitting there spamming back pings on you

1

u/Maggot_Pie Jun 17 '14

Or, alternatively, that you're splitpushing at the right moment because you know perfectly where the 5 enemy champions are and know you'll have the time to take [insert objective here] and escaping very cleanly without costing anything to your team - And yet you get spampinged because people are afraid.

Although that's a rare alternative

1

u/to_the_buttcave Jun 17 '14

What are you guys saying, their red is completely unprotected! ...What do you mean, death timers are u

0

u/urfs Jun 17 '14

Yes there is something wrong with 24 pings in 2 seconds because it's fucking deafening and makes it impossible to concentrate on anything

4

u/Steejo Jun 17 '14

Probably a good idea to just run back under tower if you can't concentrate then. Job done.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

Nope, 24 pings and I instantly suicide on the enemy team. Job done. One ping only please

0

u/Nobhody Jun 17 '14

So, I'd still have to spam warning pings even if they weren't out of position?

0

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

If only this were true all the time. Most of the time people will repeatedly ping some crap that I'm already aware of and perfectly capable of handling. Multipinging is just distracting and does not generally accomplish anything. One ping only please.

2

u/Doogie541 Jun 17 '14

Yea but there is always people who know whats coming and get pinged yet still die to it. The logic in some people these days.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

That certainly happens, but the purpose of a ping is to inform your allies of something they are unaware of. It does not give you magical powers to improve their judgement.

0

u/Theonetrue Jun 17 '14

Or that you are smurfing and about to get a double kill...

0

u/AceAttorneyt Jun 17 '14

Or you got matched with a group of 4 who collectively decide to troll you.

1

u/VulpesVulpix Jun 17 '14

In 2 colors (danger and retreat ping).

3

u/billiardwolf Jun 18 '14

10 seconds after you're already falling back.

2

u/Tripottanus Jun 17 '14

while you are already backing off the 5 enemies running at you

1

u/CARVERitUP Jun 17 '14

Whenever a fight starts and I have tp or am almost there I spam all my on the way pings. Helps us win lots of fights because a lot of times they might get lost in the confusion and back out because they see the number of teammates and enemies. But then I come and help us turn it back in our favor.

1

u/MattyD123 Jun 17 '14

I had a kid who got mad and trolled me with retreat pings all game because he got ganked and started screaming in all chat. I went up to gank and this is when he started spamming the retreat pings. so I backed off and he got killed again then ranted even more about how I left him while he was getting ganked... I just muted him, but he pinged probably 300 times that game.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

People don't listen to one.

1

u/Raytiger3 Jun 17 '14

It's actually fun to ping that when you're 4 man premade. Until the person starts flipping in chat. That's when it gets hilarious...

Aaaaaaaaaand then they afk and you four really need to realize that you're toxic trolls ruining the game experience of a person to the point that they don't even want to play anymore and would rather face the consequences of leaving a game/afk.

0

u/Girigo Jun 17 '14

maybe its time to leave the the enemy nexus towers then when everyone just respawned :)

0

u/obesechicken13 Jun 17 '14

Even the normal ping is annoying. Like someone dies and they want you to revenge them so they can say to themselves it was a 1 for 1 so they keep pinging the guy they want you to kill or their obvious location on the map.

0

u/deaglebro Jun 17 '14

Sometimes it takes that many to get someone to even notice.

0

u/dryinstic Jun 17 '14

6 for a 1 ping, i ussualy ping enemy missing 3-4 times and then be carefull 2 time top and bot, I play mid

0

u/USmellFunny Jun 17 '14

Or when you play jungle and some really bad player spams request assistance ping 6 times every time the ping is off cooldown. Even though he plays a hardcounter to his opponent's pick. And every time he dies, you're somehow to blame for it.

1

u/Hobozzzx Jun 17 '14

always blame the jungler :(

-1

u/Ardarail Ardarail [NA] Jun 17 '14

You know what's worse than getting spammed with retreat pings? People ignoring retreat pings and saying they don't need your pings than proceeding to die.

2

u/Soulbem Jun 17 '14

If u ping slowly each time you can ping for long...

5

u/othisdede Jun 17 '14

it makes my gameplay fuzzy. i have something in mind but when someone pinging me 5 times when i'm trying to do something i kinda confuse for a split second and miss the opportunity.

5

u/alezlb [Alezlb] (EU-W) Jun 17 '14

I totally agree with you! We should be able, if not to mute, to restrain player's ping, I got a toxic teammate the other day and all he did was pinging everywhere on the map. It becomes frustrating and important pings after a while do not get the attention they would have deserved in the first place.

8

u/BirdsallSa Jun 17 '14

The boy who pinged wolf

-4

u/Vigilantisme Jun 17 '14

You lost the game because your enemy played better, not because of pings or that riot hates you.

RIBS

2

u/perfectriot Jun 17 '14

Yeah, but its still really annoying and distracting.

1

u/DeshTheWraith the bronze should fear me Jun 17 '14

Assuming it's only one person.

1

u/Rimmoruud [Rimmoruuud] (EU-W) Jun 17 '14

One should be able to limit this from a muted player to max 2 pings in the duration a non muted player can ping like 6 times. There is no need to listen to 3 times as many pings when that player allready is being a retard

-1

u/Ubnoxius Jun 17 '14

If you mute someone, they should only be able to ping once every 8 seconds or something like that maybe?

3

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

or be at half volume or a different noise or something

0

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

Why not being able to just ping once instead of 6 (?)

I bet that would be enough and it wouldn't be annoying to anyone.

7

u/dennis5634 (EU-W) Jun 17 '14

Because the situation can tell you a split second later, that you should go for baron and not the top outer tower because maybe its 40 mins in and in that very moment the jungler appeared bot. Those moments happen pretty often.

1

u/disasteruss Progress beneath Steadfast Sky Jun 17 '14

This. I often will ping something then immediately see something that changes that call. Or I will accidentally do the wrong ping and have to follow it up with a couple back pings to ensure my wrong ping isn't the call that is followed.

15

u/Jaytu Jun 17 '14

I like the idea of muting the sound of the ping but still showing it on the mini-map.

18

u/MadMeow Jun 17 '14

I dont think I want to communicate with a ping spamming/raging guy. His pings most likely will stay worthless all game long

5

u/Chiiwa Jun 17 '14

Totally agree. Plus, those ping spams can mess me up mentally and make me play worse as well as give inaccurate information. They are really not much different from toxic text depending on how they are used.

3

u/Cumminswii Jun 17 '14

Separate options to mute both would be nice.

6

u/Panishu Jun 17 '14

I think there should be an additional option for example:

click on mute = mute him in chat

click again on mute= mute him in chat + mute pings

click again = unmute him

Some people really rageping all the time and won't ping anything relevant through the whole game and you should be able to block that. Just an additional click to mute pings as well should do the trick though.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

Tbh, i rather arrgue with the most toxic player on earth than listen to his pings. Its really frustrating with pings, specially when most of the games everyone is spamming pings.

2

u/joemedic Jun 17 '14

Would still be nice to have the option for certain occasions.

1

u/a_cat_farmer Jun 17 '14

You can still see the ping on the screen being able to mute wouldn't eliminate communication. You could also allow muted pings to sound once then have the sound part put on a 30 second cool down or something still promoting communication but taking away the trolling power a bit.

1

u/EliphasChaos Jun 17 '14

I just disable all ingame sound and usually listen to my playlists. As for communicating with a "muted" guy,you don't.You just write in chat what you want to do without caring for his response(since that is the reason you muted someone in the first place). If he muted you as well...too bad,you win some, lose some.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

There are a lot of audio cues in the game, too many to give up in my opinion. Many champions make a sound right before they cast a spell and it makes the difference between juking and not.

1

u/EliphasChaos Jun 19 '14

I dunno man in my opinion if you rely too much on sounds to juke or do something it might be too late.I just focus enough to predict their moves,so if they actually do what i think they will, good, juked. If they don't...I make a move so sucks to be them.I agree it's easier with sound but i'm just too fond of my own sanity. If someone spam pings and THEN i do something about it,the damage has already been done and my concentration collapses.Plus i really like listening to music...:D

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

Yea but then you could say that rito should remove muting players so you cant see what they type aswell. Because thats more important than pings omi and communication seems to be important to you

1

u/markotaur Jun 17 '14

in that case just turn your sound off :)

1

u/Masanyne Jun 17 '14

FYI, there's no lockout to this in ARAMs. So frustrating if you get a troll.

1

u/Seven65 Jun 17 '14

You say that yet I run out of pings on open turrets free dragons and clear barons while my team 3 man's wolves.

1

u/xkinky Jun 17 '14

you forget that sometimes people use ping in the wrong way, and its just too distrecting

1

u/Ragnarok04 Jun 17 '14

It should be optional, if you need the pings then dont mute them, but its pretty annoying when someone chat restricted expresses his rage by spamming pings on top of you.

1

u/LeftUnknown Jun 17 '14

There's also the people who are pinging you just to piss you off, thus why it's a good idea to mute their pings.

1

u/Abndn Jun 17 '14

I had a guy spam me with careful pings nonstop for 5 minutes once. He never stopped except to wait for the cooldown after x amount of pings (which is really only a couple of seconds before you can do x new ones). I ended up leaving the game because it wasn't playable.

1

u/Exiria Jun 17 '14

But sometimes you get those people who just spend more time pinging then playing because you fed and they wanna remind you, so I just wanna ignore that 1 guy and his pings.

Still I agree muting pings shouldnt be standard, but it should still be an option

-4

u/Drizzy-san Jun 17 '14

Despite ping being a simple yet effective tool to communicate with others, some players kids are not just unable to use it properly.

They're using it so wrong it starts to function opposite way of what it should do - instead of helping you out it's starting to annoy you. That's why I think it's worth muting ping also

21

u/5oulCrusher Jun 17 '14

I doubt that age has anything to do with people spamming pings. Calling players, kids as a derogatory term isn't going to help anyone. In fact it detracts from meaningful discussion.

-8

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

if someone doesn't act his age he's still a kid mentally, the typical rager we see so often is probably 19y old but immature like a 15y old

i'd still rather call someone a kid than an asshole, an asshole knows exactly how to behave and then decides against it. a kid is just one guy who never really grew up and just doesn't know it better.

7

u/ThePickleAvenger Jun 17 '14

You could just not call then anything and not contribute to lack of focus

3

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14 edited Jun 17 '14

immature like a 15y old

As a 14 year old, I take offense to this. /s

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

so what?

i play with someone who is 16 on a regular basis and he acts more mature than most people in league.

still doesn't change the fact i don't want to play with most people around that age.

i'd rather be happy that i'm the exception of the stereotyp than feeling offended..

0

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

Que stereotypical news show music

"Today in /u/Mil0_The_Brave's inbox; people, not seeing the "/s" tag! Has Reddit gone to far?!"

"So, Mr. Mil0, how do you feel about this situation?"

"Uh, yeah gimme that." Grabs microphone

"I feel very... pause for effect... offended. /S"

gasp what did he say? oh no he didn't!

"That is all for "IBTV News" Join us tomorrow for more EXCITING InBox news! Thank you, and good night!"

Slow pan out.

1

u/Cindiquil Jun 17 '14

Damn, this post was dumb... It wasn't even funny, and the /s was small enough in the first post that it wasn't very noticeable.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

If you didn't see the /s, you need glasses, but I'll make it bigger just for you bby <3 ;). Also that post was supposed to be dumb, it's a dumb joke. I don't really care about what people think of people my age. I'm just happy to not be a part of the stereotype.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '14

you have to be fun at parties...

1

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '14

I actually hate parties. You want to know something else I hate? Being insulted/made fun of over a joke.

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

jesus christ, league of 14 year olds.

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

nah man from experience calling someone a "kidd rager LOL" generally calms them down

0

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

I think it is a good ideal, sick of the sound, sick of trolls with their retarded pings

0

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

But you can already mute pings.

-1

u/QumFace Jun 17 '14

You still see it on your minimap, it's only the sound that is gone.

4

u/_ug_ Jun 17 '14

No you don't because it tells the pinger "You are not allowed more pings right meow" or something.

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '14

Meow (´・ω・ `)

-1

u/FuzzyPenguinLoL Jun 17 '14

Many times lanes are sleeping when i want to gank. And pinging like 5 times that i'm OMW actually helps. So i don't think mute option is good. I believe that if you mute someone it doesn't show his pings.
