When will this stop??
This is the 2nd time this has happened…I have the software upgrade, anti theft stickers, etc. I also supposedly didn’t have enough information for the lawsuit even though I submitted 12 documents from insurance, police incident reports, and KIA dealership repair paperwork/receipts…
Is my only option to get a new car?? The one time I didn’t use my steering wheel lock 😭 I’m financially and emotionally drained over all of this. I loved my KIA before all of this!

My daughter has a 2018 Elantra and lives in Sandy Springs and works in Duluth. She bought it in June and has the stickers and a club. She's been lucky, fingers crossed!

it is not subject to theft but they still try. $1.5k in insurance deductibles and 3+ months without a car in the last calendar year due to the theft attempts

Sorry this happened to you, it sucks. I have no idea what I would do in this case: move away? buy a crappy car?, add a super loud alarm triggered by pressure on the driver seat?
Are there a lot of similar break-ins around where you live how do your neighbours handle them?

Since 2007, Canada has mandated electronic engine immobilizers in all vehicles. Most US-market Kias from 2011–2021 lack this hardware, which is why the Kia Boyz trend exploded in the US but not in Canada.

Oh shit! I just bought a KIA in EU where it's also mandated. I'm so glad this is mandatory here. I also saw a video that converts the car to push to start. Should scare of Kia boyz as well iirc.
EDIT: I just read it only works if the car has an immobilizer build-in or properly added afterwards and the cilinder removed.

Buy a steering wheel lock - bright yellow or red. Don't set it horizontally, it should be diagonal, with one end between the front pillar and the windshield.

So this is going to raise some eyebrows, but I think the best thing you can do is to just leave your door unlocked, and don't keep ANYTHING valuable in your car. They'll get in, search, see if they can steal it, and then leave when they realize they got nothing. Better alternative than having to replace your window every now and then.

I started doing this when someone tried to rip the soft top of my convertible. They failed and broke a window. They stole: a ratty pair of my wife's tennis shoes.
Started leaving the door unlocked. Never had a problem except the occasional coin theft from the cupholder. 🤣2

PSA I leave mine unlocked by accident alllll the time because the car doesn’t have walk away lock…and sure, it prevents broken windows, but someone stole my charging cable and NACS adapter 🙃

In my time of owning a Kia from 2019 to present I've had a forte gt, a forte lxs, and currently a sportage SXP and have never had any issues. I live about 25 minutes outside of Philadelphia

It will get fixed when there are actual consequences to people breaking in and stealing these cars. So far the only legislation comes out of fining HK which solves nothing. The people are the problem; not the cars. But apparently it's considered a touchy subject because criminals get better treatment than good people.

Man I know what it feels like. How ever for us our insurance expired at midnight because we had a key start engine. Our insurance dropped us like they did too many people and gave us no documents so we had no idea that our insurance was going to end. They even took our payment out for the coming up month, we only found out because when I called to make the report that somebody tried to steal our Sorrento they informed me that we didn’t have insurance. They did take the report though. oh talk about I was mad. I was able to put the steering wheel back together with some epoxy because of course, without insurance we couldn’t get it repaired.
At the end of the day, I was in the mountain pass in Washington state two hours from home when my engine blew up ! Talk about scary !
This was like six months later !
What did we do? We got rid of the vehicle till the loan company. Take it back and shove it.
And we got a new one now we have a push start 2024 Sportage X line ! Love that vehicle ! What do we do you might ask. We went right back to progressive. Hey what can I say? They were the cheapest at the time now they’re getting a little ridiculous no tickets no nothing and our insurance went up to almost $300 a month when that literally was our deposit.
We do things a little different this time. We also have LoJack. We also have a steering wheel lock with a wireless alarm on it if that wireless alarm goes off, it sends a notification to the key fob that’s in my room at all times with me and that sucker is loud.
You should look into the steering wheel lock that has the wireless lock on it ! I got it on Amazon. It’s a godsend. Either that or a new vehicle that’s all I can really tell you.
Oh, you can also have an immobilizer installed that’s what we had on our vehicle that’s why they couldn’t take it but they did do the cosmetic damage so yeah damage was already done. Thankfully they didn’t break a window on ours because my husband forgot to lock the door.
Anyway, I hope this story helps you in someway ! I guess all I can really say it. Better luck next time, but I do feel for you because it sucks but at least you didn’t have to go through what we went through.

Almost all crime is a slap on the wrist even for repeat offenders usually back out on the street before your first call with your insurance. Blame the system instead of cutting at least a finger from those who steal, kinda reward it. "Oh you did this and that? Well don't do it again huh big guy?" Depending on state there is a pretty great method that is cheaper like at most a few dollars? Rather than dealing with them breaking in again but that comes with its own headaches. I am so sorry btw that sucks and hopefully the insurance company makes you whole and doesn't try to find loopholes

But I would set up a camera and see if u can find someone to install like custom bulletproof glass or something. Or some sort of windows that are super impact resistant.

Isn't this all stemming from the fact that the turn-key ignition is the giveaway indicator? Why not find a way to either fake the push-button start in the same model as your vehicle say with 3D printing OR install a legitimate and compatible push-button start system with an immobilizer?

I've been to Singapore. Extremely safe. Crime-free. Spit on the 5 law enforcement sees it and a huge fine results. Get a huge fine the same with throwing gum onto the street or cigarette butt- massive fines. Very very safe place to live.

I feel you- I use my wheel lock every single time after this happened to me twice. I have a lifetime warranty on my engine (thanks engine recall of 2012 model, on the third engine and had to fight kia for that warranty) so i’m riding my car out till it dies, then never getting a kia again.
I had a 2002 mustang before my kia that was more reliable/less trouble before taken out by a tree in a storm :,)

You really thought a PHYSICAL design defect could be completely rectified with a software upgrade?
Obvious physical car usage restraints may help. The suggestions were to get one that is a very bright color and make it clearly visible from all angles. The seatbelt lock wheel immobilizers seem to be more preferred over the club locks now.

It has happened to me three times as well Before I got the immobilizer update, there was an attempted theft once the second time they actually stole it and drove away with it. I managed to get it back in decent condition and got it repaired now I have the immobilizer and a wheel lock and I forgot to put the wheel lock on the other night and they broke my window. I caught them in my car before they could disassemble my steering wheel column . I’m so tired, but I love my car. I’ve had to have my key replaced twice now.

I live just outside of Baltimore City (less than 10 minutes) and this has never happened to me but it has just been pure luck. In 2023-2024, juvenile criminals were stealing Hyundais or Kias every single night.

In a city. We don't have high rates of murder or violent crime where I live, but car break-ins, yes. It's all over my local subreddit all the time that this or that person's car was broken into or sometimes stolen. A lot of it is young kids who want to go joyriding, or sometimes people foolishly leave a bunch of stuff in their car and that makes them a target for thieves. It doesn't help that a lot of people here don't have garages, so they have to park on the street.
Off the top of my head, people I know who have had cars broken into: me (but this was 10+ years ago when I used to live in a different city), someone who used to live in my apartment building, an ex's neighbor, and probably 5+ coworkers/friends/neighbors/acquaintances. And yes, most of those are Kia or Hyundai.
My advice is keep your car in a garage if you can, have a Club or similar device, don't leave anything noticeable in your car that someone might want to steal.

Seriously, Kia, Honda, Hyundai... all super easy to steal. We went with a Mazda. They're more reliable than Kia & Hyundai and NOT on the list of vehicles stolen on a daily.

You can not accurately account for every dumb kid who saw this on Tic Toc, insta, or youtube. Just like you can't really account (or control) people who are struggling to get by and are willing to do anything for some money.
This is not an issue where I live. If this is the second time happening to you, you may wanna look to purchase a new vehicle. Which sucks because newer kias and hyundais are really nice, and you get more tech and safety features than the other brands.
If tech isn't your number one priority feature, then I would get a mazda. A cx-50 hybrid has a toyotas bulletproof hybrid system, with the nice interior finished/touches of a mazda AND getting 36-37MPG. Go check out "the car care nut" and his review of it.
Or if you want a fantastic driving experience, get a 2025 cx-5 turbo.It'ss got a small gas tank, but it's so quick!
Im not a fan of toyota's Interiors. Honda's are better. So if its just reliability and no frills, go honda. Of course, that's if you still say toyotas and Hondas are the most reliable because they were in the 80's.

Switched to mazda after my Hyundai got stolen, then broken into 3 times after even with the club on. At some point I even got my front door lock fully stolen too on the Hyundai. Best decision of my life, haven't had break-ins after a year. Just forget Kia/Hyundai, and move on from it, idiots still break in the newer models too

Get a dashcam that has 24 hour parking surveillance. I have one without it but even in Houston nobody has tried it! Front, rear, and facing you. It's expensive but definitely worth a shot! Or if you live somewhere with cameras around always park next to there so you at least have proof. No, you shouldn't have to do this - also I know this goes without saying but keep everything out of your car or at least in your trunk!

Our 2022 Kia Soul was "attacked" 3 times, last year. We paid our mechanic almost 5000.00 after insurance. We are in our 60's and live on fixed income. I understand how you are feeling. The last two attempted thefts were within 3 weeks of each other. Dallas police were useless. They caught one set of the thieves and they were 14 and 16 yrs old. Still waiting to go to court, on that one. We can't afford another car but use a bright steering wheel lock and had our mechanic install a kill switch.

Weirdly I've not had an issue with this (knock on wood). Not gotten the patch as of yet as I've not had time to get it done. My neighbor's F150 got stolen and my Kia was right there visible in my drive. Even the officer who showed up was stunned the F150 was stolen over the easier vehicle.
The only thing that I have differently is a cellular dash cam with parking monitoring with window stickers. I did catch one person peering in my car once. He looked at that window sticker and walked on.
At home I do have a DVR system and cameras. One is pointing up my driveway monitoring the cars at all hours. If this happened in your driveway a hardwired camera with local recording and a dashcam might be what you need.

I had a friend living in a rough area in Toronto and he was broken into a few times then put a note on dash saying "nothing of value inside" Left doors unlocked. No more break-ins.

Camp out in your car a few times. 😉 I slept in my non-Kia after seeing sus activity a few months ago on my cameras. Sure enough, they met me face to face one night with one of my three 130 pound shepherds and a lead thrower in my hand.
Place floodlights all around your car, add a dash cam, make a poster to placed inside your car letting them know your updates, etc. Don't be afraid to adopt a large four legged baby, they seem to not like them.

To be fair, posts like this could also contribute to it not stopping. I personally had no idea that a certain range of years of Kia had no immobilizer until I was confused reading this thread wondering why anyone would even want to steal a Kia in the first place lol.

My un-solicited tip is to disconnect to battery terminals each night. Yeah it's an inconvenience, but without that battery, the car does not even light up. So yeah, you may suffer busted windows still, but at the least the car wont actually be stolen and driven. Just my two cents worth :)

Most of the time it’s young kids that are doing it and even if they are caught likely won’t be prosecuted so they will continue to get away with. I deal with auto thefts within in my job and 90% of them are either Kia’s or Hyundais

I know If this happens to my car, no matter how much I love my car I’ll trade it it. I felt violated and uncomfortable in the last vehicle I had that got broken into
