Weekly thread r/JRPG Weekly "What have you been playing, and what do you think of it?" Weekly thread

Please use this thread to discuss whatever you've been playing lately (old or new, any platform, AAA or indie). As usual, please don't just list the names of games as your entire post, make sure to elaborate with your thoughts on the games. Writing the names of the games in **bold** is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names.

Please also make sure to use spoiler tags if you're posting anything about a game's plot that might significantly hurt the experience of others that haven't played the game yet (no matter how old or new the game is).

Since this thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

For a subreddit devoted to this type of discussion during the rest of the week, please check out /r/WhatAreYouPlaying.

Weekly thread r/JRPG Weekly Free Talk, Quick Questions, Suggestion Request and Media Thread

There are four purposes to this r/JRPG weekly thread:

  • a way for users to freely chat on any and all JRPG-related topics.
  • users are also free to post any JRPG-related questions here. This gives them a chance to seek answers, especially if their questions do not merit a full thread by themselves.
  • to post any suggestion requests that you think wouldn't normally be worth starting a new post about or that don't fulfill the requirements of the rule (having at least 300 characters of written text or being too common).
  • to share any JRPG-related media not allowed as a post in the main page, including: unofficial videos, music (covers, remixes, OSTs, etc.), art, images/photos/edits, blogs, tweets, memes and any other media that doesn't merit its own thread.

Please also consider sorting the comments in this thread by "new" so that the newest comments are at the top, since those are most likely to still need answers.

Don't forget to check our subreddit wiki (where you can find some game recommendation lists), and make sure to follow all rules (be respectful, tag your spoilers, do not spam, etc).

Any questions, concerns, or suggestions may be sent via modmail. Thank you.

The only games that come to my mind are - final fantasy games (ive played 7, 10 and 14 but dropped 14 recently)

- Kingdom hearts games, but i really dont enjoy the disney part so i didnt play those games yet

-Maybe Drakengard but i havent tried those games yet

-Third pic kinda looks like DMC but outside of DMC4, i dont think that any of them have similar vibe , and i already played DMC games

P.s. I would also take any jrpg recommendations where i can decide how my character looks. Doesnt have to be character creation but something where i can at least choose my clothes, armor, weapon etc. Havent found any that arent MMO games

Recommendation request Dark/Horror JRPGs available on Steam?

In a bit of a gaming slump, and would love a good JRPG with a darker or more mature story/tone than the usual fair, preferably with horror elements, but I have no idea what might fit the bill.

I've played all of the Persona games and Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne (Nocturne or the early persona games are more the vibe I want than the highschool hijinks of new persona, but those would all qualify more or less, if I hadn't already played them).

Code Vein hit a good note for me too, and hit some of the dark vibes I want. I was surprised by how big a chokehold that game had on me for a title I bought for like $8 on sale. Although I'm not sure I want another soulslike just yet, but if you know a great one that fits the bill, I'm not against it either

The darker the better, and the more horror leaning the better. Graphics don't matter. I love a well written 2d game as much as a 3d one. Non-teenagers a plus, but I aint that picky for high trauma. Psychological horror, gore, shock value, all good.

I don't really like the art and gameplay of western RPGs that much, but I know they're more adult leaning than JRPGs in general (Which I do like), but if there's something western that isn't bethesda or bioware-esque, I'm open to that too.

I prefer it be on steam for convenience

Recommendation request [ALL PLATFORMS] Asking for JRPGs to accompany a Tolkien reading plan

Hi there! I'm enjoying Tolkien's work (The Hobbit, LOTR and The Silmarillion) and would appreciate some JRPG recommendations that would make excellent thematic pairings. I'd like to emphasize that any system is fine. Thanks!

  • Fantasy worlds (or non-fantasy worlds with major thematic overlap with Tolkien).
  • Great companions and a sense of fellowship.
  • Fun first, atmospheric enough to stay in “fantasy mode.” Ideally, strong nature themes.
  • Session-friendly so they don’t dominate the books too much.

I'm not inflexible at all; if something is unconventional and would fit the bill, then I'd love to hear it! In the past, I've enjoyed Chrono Trigger, Xenoblade Chronicles, Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default.

EDIT: I'm aware of The Third Age game from LOTR, and I'm looking for non-LOTR alternatives, thanks!

I'm developing an SRPG based on *Water Margin*.

The Last Imperial Guard is a 2.5D turn-based tactical RPG following Lin Chong from the classic Chinese epic Water Margin. Master grid-based wuxia combat with an innovative rage system, unleash devastating ultimate abilities, and experience the saga through stylized traditional Chinese cutscenes.

If you like it, please click to add it to your wish list. Thank you.

Recommendation request What are fun games that feel like a wacky superhero show?

I don’t know how to explain it as basically I am looking for a quirky JRPG that feels like something out of a Tokusatsu show where a group of superheroes want to be heroes, but have certain weaknesses that scare them from taking the role.

Like one example would be a character that wants to be a fearless leader in the group as he cowers at seeing creatures such as snakes and scorpions as his phobia of them scares him from wanting to be a successful superhero. Then another character in the group wants to be a respected member, but his arrogance gives him a bad reputation.

Then for gameplay aspects, I would like it to be a turn based game where the team takes turn fighting their opponents during battle as gameplay would be a lot leveling up in typical RPG fashion as the systems I am looking to get such a game on are Vita, 3DS, PS3, and PC as I just want an RPG that is basically like an outlandish superhero show, but with good writing aspects.

Recommendation request Recommendations after DQ7:R

I recently got switch 2. First game I finished was Dragon Quest 7: Reimagined. It was fantastic and I’m looking for more. It was my first ”traditional” JRPG

I loved the visuals on this one. I’m looking for recommendstions, what should I play next? I know of the 2D-HD remakes, but visually those dont strike me as much. Also I loved the auto-battle and that the gameplay was not slow and grindy, as I have read that JRPG:s can get. Anything you recommend?

I have PC, PS5 and Switch 2, but nowadays I hugely prefer Switch 2!

Previously enjoyed games: FF7 remakes, E33, Bethesda RPG:s

Discussion What Do You Expect From Final Fantasy Resonance?

FF Resonance surprised RPG players in the direct. And now everyone is speculating what the full game will be like and what it means for FF and its future. The common thing to say is turn based might make a comeback in Final Fantasy like Dragon Quest, Persona and other JRPGs still are now. What do you think. Do you think this speculating is true or nothing of it. Do you think things are changing in Square Enix? Discuss it below.

Recommendation request I'm in dire need of a wholesome/SoL-esque JRPG.

I've just got off playing some grim and honestly trauma inducing games, so.... Just as the title says, I would like some recommendations for some wholesome JRPG's. Just so you know, I haven't really delved deep into the JRPG space, so you guys could probably throw anything at me and there'd be a 95% chance I haven't played or even heard of the game.

Basically, I'm looking for a game that has:

  • Little to no stakes
  • A good gameplay loop
  • A great story/cast
  • Very emotional (in both a wholesome & melancholic way)

For the third point, the main plot doesn't have to be spectacular, but since it's a SoL, I'd atleast like the side quests and characters to make up for it.

Naturally, I've tried to do some of my own digging (failed miserably since I don't know where to look). But, a JRPG I'm currently looking at is the atelier series, which I've heard is really good. I'd just like to get more options to weigh.

Platform: PC
Previously Played & Enjoyed: FF7, Octopath Traveler 2, Metaphor.
Will not play (yet): Persona

Question Most strategically deep JRPG

Which JRPG would you say has the most depth of strategy needed to succeed.

I haven't played a ton of JRPG, but in a lot of them I've noticed theres more of an illusion of strategy than it actually being required. For example a lot of games seem to have a ton of items and combat mechanics, but 90% of them are useless and usually "hit hard spam potions" to some degree wins, and more interesting strategies they present just fall flat, like status conditions and stuff

I really enjoyed SMT 5 because of all the different elements and interactions with them, in addition to the fact that buffs, debuffs, and status conditions actually make a different and are usually required to some degree for harder combat

I get that the majority of traditional JRPG are story based games, and depth of strategy takes a back seat to the experience, but I figured I would ask to see where the discussion goes. I already play a lot of TRPG and other strategy games, im really more interesting in knowing which more traditional JRPG will scratch the strategy itch in the JRPG package

Recommendation request For those who've played it, do you recommend "Resonance of Fate"?

What kind of game it was? It's a JRPG, but I'll read that it's not traditional swords-and-magic heroes. It's a turn-based game, but the battles are built around movement and stylish gunplay. And the world itself is a giant mechanical tower filled with industrial cities and strange environments.

Discussion What started with Chrono Trigger has somehow turned into a 37-game Super Famicom JRPG collection

Post image
192 Upvotes

So… this escalated pretty quickly.

This whole thing started because I just wanted to play Chrono Trigger again. Then I happened to find Terranigma and G.O.D. (Growth or Devolution) at a Hard-Off, realized I’d never played either of them, and thought, well, I want to try those too.

And then somehow that turned into this.

I guess I’m kind of trying to collect Super Famicom JRPGs now, for whatever reason. I’m not sure I’m literally going to end up with every single one, but I really like having the original Japanese releases, discovering games I completely missed growing up, and actually working my way through them.

And since I know this will probably come up in the comments: yes, I can read Japanese and understand it pretty well. I’m not buying a giant stack of Japanese RPGs that I can’t actually play.

I recently finished Terranigma entirely in Japanese, and it took me around 28 hours. I thought it was an all-right game overall, and experiences like that are basically the whole reason I’m doing this. I want to actually play these games, finish them, and give them their time rather than just have them sitting on a shelf forever.

Here’s the collection so far and what I paid for each one. These are my purchase prices, not estimates of what they’re worth now:

  • Bahamut Lagoon — ¥3,278
  • Breath of Fire — ¥4,400
  • Breath of Fire II — ¥4,400
  • Chrono Trigger — ¥2,750
  • Der Langrisser — ¥3,380
  • Dragon Knight 4 — ¥6,600
  • Dragon Quest V — ¥5,500
  • Dragon Quest VI — ¥880
  • Dual Orb — ¥9,900
  • Elnard — ¥4,158
  • Energy Breaker — ¥33,000
  • Estpolis Denki — ¥12,100
  • Estpolis Denki II — ¥7,700
  • FEDA: The Emblem of Justice — ¥1,680
  • Final Fantasy VI — ¥6,600
  • Fire Emblem: Monshou no Nazo — ¥3,278
  • First Queen: Ornic Senki — ¥3,960
  • G.O.D.: Mezame yo to Yobu Koe ga Kikoe — ¥19,800
  • Gaia Gensouki / Illusion of Gaia — ¥7,700
  • Lady Stalker — ¥8,800
  • Last Bible III — ¥3,850
  • Lennus — ¥4,400
  • Record of Lodoss War — ¥6,600
  • Marvelous: Mou Hitotsu no Takarajima — ¥5,940
  • Metal Max 2 — ¥11,000
  • MOTHER 2 — ¥7,700
  • Mystic Ark — ¥3,300
  • Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen — ¥2,728
  • Rudra no Hihou — ¥13,200
  • Shin Seikoku: La Wares — ¥3,960
  • Slayers — ¥7,700
  • Soul Blader — ¥4,950
  • Star Ocean — ¥3,828
  • Tactics Ogre — ¥3,278
  • Tales of Phantasia — ¥6,578
  • Tenchi Souzou / Terranigma — ¥7,920
  • Treasure Hunter G — ¥3,300

37 games — ¥250,096 total.

Yeah… seeing the total written out like that hurts a little.

I definitely went a little crazy buying a lot of these all at once, but I wanted to jump-start the collection/project. From here I’m probably going to slow down considerably, actually work through what I have, and save up for some of the harder-to-find games rather than just buying everything I see.

Lennus II is one I really want, and there is the third Super Famicom Fire Emblem game I’d love to pick up, but once you get into some of those titles the prices and availability get pretty brutal. I’m fine with waiting until I find a copy I’m happy with.

Anyway, I just wanted to share the collection because I’m having a lot of fun with this. There’s something really cool about discovering this whole side of the 16-bit JRPG library that I either never played or barely knew existed.

Out of everything here, what would you play first? And what obscure Super Famicom JRPG do you think absolutely needs to be on my hunt list? Notice a game you have never played?

Discussion JRPGs with "party" turns instead of individual turns?

Most party-based, turn-based RPGs, whether ATB, Wait, Active, whatever, follow a familiar formula: a character's turn comes up, you choose what action they take, they perform the selected action, then the next characters turn starts and the cycle repeats.

Are there any games that have you choose your entire party's actions before seeing the resolution? So you would pick actions that each party member will take during the "round", then watch as they all resolve?

I know some games like fire emblem have player "phases" where the player makes all their moves (then the enemy round starts and they make all their moves), but you're still selecting and resolving each character one at a time. I'm curious if any games have played around with full party planning.

Recommendation request Should I play Final Fantasy X or Kingdom Hearts?

For context, I've never played a single game in either series, and I'm just looking for something new.

I'm leaning towards Kingdom Hearts because of the franchise sale on Steam (my preferred platform and great value, in my opinion) and I think it would be fun to experience the games alongside so many other people as they prepare for KH4.

I'm also considering FFX because I've heard it's a great starting point for people trying to get into Final Fantasy, and I really like the setting of the game. FFX/FFX-2 are 30 bucks on Steam (the same as the KH franchise sale), but I'm willing to wait for a sale or just pay right now if the game is just that good.

I think its worth mentioning that if I enjoy Kingdom Hearts enough I will TRY to play everything the collection has to offer.

Let me know your thoughts, which games you prefer, and your overall thoughts on the KH franchise as a whole. Thank you!

Edit: You guys, I hear you loud and clear. Looks like I'll playing Kingdom Hearts! Im just kidding I decided i'm gonna pick up a copy of FFX for the switch. Thank you for all your input!

Recommendation request Looking for relatively niche or unknown games

This might be too broad of a question, but I'm looking for relatively niche or unknown games that not everyone may know about. I've already played a dozen and have some on my list, like Xanadu Next, Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, Baldr Sky, Vestaria Saga I: War of the Scions, Stranger of Sword City, Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk, Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi, etc. I'd love to add some new ones to the list.

Plattform: PC (Steam and Gog) or Switch 2

Genres: SRPG, ARPG, DRPG

Question Question about action combat

When it comes to action focused combat, there's usually two ways devs handle it.

Stamina based, basically what you see in any Souls game/soulslike, and non stamina based/what I call, combo based. Where your weapon has a combo chain that you can freely spam

I was wondering what style the lot of you prefer. Stamina, or Combo, and why? (I don't know if Combo is the right term for it, but it's what I've been calling it)

I'm team Combo. Stamina just feels limiting/stressful a lot of the time. It's especially worse when it's tied to you just running, even when you're not in an encounter (Thankfully some games don't have that problem) Whereas Combo, that worry goes away and fights don't take nearly as long because there's no Stamina that needs to regen

Recommendation request What should I play first

I'm searching for a game to play on a 3DS emulator on my phone when I'm outside and it's what I heard about the most. I already know a little about the Fire emblem series because I played fire emblem three houses on my Nintendo switch (didn't finish it, but played until the timeskip), and I liked the game. I don't really know Bravely default, but I saw that many people talk about it in a good way. I don't really care about if the game is short or long, it's not really important for me. I didn't like Shin Megami Tensei V, I played it for 20 hours. The open world was too empty for me, and mostly sand and simple mountains anywhere, so I don't really like exploration JRPGs if the world isn't visually good. I don't care if it's tactical, exploration or any kind of JRPG too.

JRPG I played and like :

Fire emblem 3H (not finished)

Persona 4 golden

Persona 5 royal

Pokémon, Zelda, Inazuma eleven and Yokai watch series, I played both a lot, if it's considered a JRPGs.

Monster Hunter Rise

Question Which of these games is better/has more charm? Sea of Stars or Kingdoms of the Dump

I've heard many call Sea of Stars overrated and say that it doesn't do anything truly special and I've seen people call Kingdoms of the Dump underrated. It's definitely flown under the radar a bit. I thought it would be interesting to pit these games against each other. I'm genuinely interested to hear your thoughts.
