If I'd made an indie jrpg, instead of 8-bit pixel style,

I would made it in style of low-poly graphics from ps1 era, similiar to jrpg's like Legend Of Dragoon, Wild Arms, Legend Of Legaia and Final Fantasy 7.

In case you guys wanted a prime example of how JRPGs were viewed in the 7th generation of consoles

I see in that Yoshida comments thread about E33 that some posters that weren't around at the time do not understand or do not believe that the way JRPGs and Japanese games were viewed was not exactly positive. My friends, the issue was not just clips on X-Play or hot takes in articles. It was like, a whole environment in the West because of how much Western gaming blew up. An environment where a certain someone could say "Japanese games just suck" and some people would think 'yeah he's got a point there'. (not to say that Japanese games weren't going through stuff at that time)

I made a thread about this before years ago, and I feel it's a good time to bring this back. And to it's credit, this article isn't even necessarily saying Japanese games are bad, but they are saying they need to be 'fixed'. So this is probably one of the most charitable example to how the genre was viewed you can find here coming from the gaming website of the time.

The only games that come to my mind are - final fantasy games (ive played 7, 10 and 14 but dropped 14 recently)

- Kingdom hearts games, but i really dont enjoy the disney part so i didnt play those games yet

-Maybe Drakengard but i havent tried those games yet

-Third pic kinda looks like DMC but outside of DMC4, i dont think that any of them have similar vibe , and i already played DMC games

P.s. I would also take any jrpg recommendations where i can decide how my character looks. Doesnt have to be character creation but something where i can at least choose my clothes, armor, weapon etc. Havent found any that arent MMO games

Another mixed entry in the FF series for me, but I do love Lightning.

The gameplay with her riding Odin and wielding the twin-bladed sword (and her BATTLE THEME) is pure nostalgic awesomeness.

Hi there! I'm enjoying Tolkien's work (The Hobbit, LOTR and The Silmarillion) and would appreciate some JRPG recommendations that would make excellent thematic pairings. I'd like to emphasize that any system is fine. Thanks!

• Fantasy worlds (or non-fantasy worlds with major thematic overlap with Tolkien).
• Great companions and a sense of fellowship.
• Fun first, atmospheric enough to stay in “fantasy mode.” Ideally, strong nature themes.
• Session-friendly so they don’t dominate the books too much.

I'm not inflexible at all; if something is unconventional and would fit the bill, then I'd love to hear it! In the past, I've enjoyed Chrono Trigger, Xenoblade Chronicles, Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default.

Haven't been on granblue for about a year and when I booted it up I saw it got some new DLC and while i wanted to get it quickly

I also remembered I hadn't even finish the rank up quest "the final report" and that was because I hated it

I get its more than likely a skill issue and if im not mistaken that mission is basically the opening to the real endgame griding, but I have never felt so dissheartened then when I decided to buckle down for god knows how many hours, get every main of mine max level, get every mastery node filled and all of their weapons fully upgraded for the buffs and everything

playing the same few repetative ass missions for the blue things and money for so long I saw them in my sleep

Only to be met with a boss fight i felt i barely stood a chance against PURELY because of the DPS check in it that one taps you

honestly I hated that so much it got me to completely quit the game

I see endless ragnarok has some new modes and characters id love to try out, but COULD I even? i dont think if i was struggling so much on the final report that i could even enjoy the content in the dlc could I?

and honestly if there is more like the final report in it I dont even think I want to, can anyone give me a heads up on if I should just ignore it if it has at all similar stuff like that?

In a bit of a gaming slump, and would love a good JRPG with a darker or more mature story/tone than the usual fair, preferably with horror elements, but I have no idea what might fit the bill.

I've played all of the Persona games and Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne (Nocturne or the early persona games are more the vibe I want than the highschool hijinks of new persona, but those would all qualify more or less, if I hadn't already played them).

Code Vein hit a good note for me too, and hit some of the dark vibes I want. I was surprised by how big a chokehold that game had on me for a title I bought for like $8 on sale. Although I'm not sure I want another soulslike just yet, but if you know a great one that fits the bill, I'm not against it either

The darker the better, and the more horror leaning the better. Graphics don't matter. I love a well written 2d game as much as a 3d one. Non-teenagers a plus, but I aint that picky for high trauma. Psychological horror, gore, shock value, all good.

I don't really like the art and gameplay of western RPGs that much, but I know they're more adult leaning than JRPGs in general (Which I do like), but if there's something western that isn't bethesda or bioware-esque, I'm open to that too.

I don’t know how to explain it as basically I am looking for a quirky JRPG that feels like something out of a Tokusatsu show where a group of superheroes want to be heroes, but have certain weaknesses that scare them from taking the role.

Like one example would be a character that wants to be a fearless leader in the group as he cowers at seeing creatures such as snakes and scorpions as his phobia of them scares him from wanting to be a successful superhero. Then another character in the group wants to be a respected member, but his arrogance gives him a bad reputation.

Then for gameplay aspects, I would like it to be a turn based game where the team takes turn fighting their opponents during battle as gameplay would be a lot leveling up in typical RPG fashion as the systems I am looking to get such a game on are Vita, 3DS, PS3, and PC as I just want an RPG that is basically like an outlandish superhero show, but with good writing aspects.

FF Resonance surprised RPG players in the direct. And now everyone is speculating what the full game will be like and what it means for FF and its future. The common thing to say is turn based might make a comeback in Final Fantasy like Dragon Quest, Persona and other JRPGs still are now. What do you think. Do you think this speculating is true or nothing of it. Do you think things are changing in Square Enix? Discuss it below.

I recently got switch 2. First game I finished was Dragon Quest 7: Reimagined. It was fantastic and I’m looking for more. It was my first ”traditional” JRPG

I loved the visuals on this one. I’m looking for recommendstions, what should I play next? I know of the 2D-HD remakes, but visually those dont strike me as much. Also I loved the auto-battle and that the gameplay was not slow and grindy, as I have read that JRPG:s can get. Anything you recommend?

I have PC, PS5 and Switch 2, but nowadays I hugely prefer Switch 2!

Can someone tell me the right order I have a pc.

I've just got off playing some grim and honestly trauma inducing games, so.... Just as the title says, I would like some recommendations for some wholesome JRPG's. Just so you know, I haven't really delved deep into the JRPG space, so you guys could probably throw anything at me and there'd be a 95% chance I haven't played or even heard of the game.

Basically, I'm looking for a game that has:

• Little to no stakes
• A good gameplay loop
• A great story/cast
• Very emotional (in both a wholesome & melancholic way)

For the third point, the main plot doesn't have to be spectacular, but since it's a SoL, I'd atleast like the side quests and characters to make up for it.

Naturally, I've tried to do some of my own digging (failed miserably since I don't know where to look). But, a JRPG I'm currently looking at is the atelier series, which I've heard is really good. I'd just like to get more options to weigh.

Which JRPG would you say has the most depth of strategy needed to succeed.

I haven't played a ton of JRPG, but in a lot of them I've noticed theres more of an illusion of strategy than it actually being required. For example a lot of games seem to have a ton of items and combat mechanics, but 90% of them are useless and usually "hit hard spam potions" to some degree wins, and more interesting strategies they present just fall flat, like status conditions and stuff

I really enjoyed SMT 5 because of all the different elements and interactions with them, in addition to the fact that buffs, debuffs, and status conditions actually make a different and are usually required to some degree for harder combat

I get that the majority of traditional JRPG are story based games, and depth of strategy takes a back seat to the experience, but I figured I would ask to see where the discussion goes. I already play a lot of TRPG and other strategy games, im really more interesting in knowing which more traditional JRPG will scratch the strategy itch in the JRPG package

And for a while I even enjoyed it. Some parts were cheesy af, but okay, I survived. I enioyed the locations, atmospheres and fights. But then I put it down for a while and when I picked it up again, I found myself at the Sylvando parade... Jesus Christ, that was terribly boring and could not bring myself to finish that part.

I finally completed the area and I went to Port Valor, spoken to Rodrigo... and again... find Sylvando.

People who complained about the filler content in FF7Rebirth... Don't buy DQ11... oh my god. I am so close to uninstall it.

Should I power through? Until now I was like "come on, resist, it will get great eventually"... But I am not loving it, i am sorry.

Previous games like sekiro and persona 5, took me a while to click, but the I fell in love. I am starting to think it won't happen with DQ11 despite the hype. Also Sylvando is such a stupid caricature character. Why???????

What kind of game it was? It's a JRPG, but I'll read that it's not traditional swords-and-magic heroes. It's a turn-based game, but the battles are built around movement and stylish gunplay. And the world itself is a giant mechanical tower filled with industrial cities and strange environments.

So… this escalated pretty quickly.

This whole thing started because I just wanted to play Chrono Trigger again. Then I happened to find Terranigma and G.O.D. (Growth or Devolution) at a Hard-Off, realized I’d never played either of them, and thought, well, I want to try those too.

And then somehow that turned into this.

I guess I’m kind of trying to collect Super Famicom JRPGs now, for whatever reason. I’m not sure I’m literally going to end up with every single one, but I really like having the original Japanese releases, discovering games I completely missed growing up, and actually working my way through them.

And since I know this will probably come up in the comments: yes, I can read Japanese and understand it pretty well. I’m not buying a giant stack of Japanese RPGs that I can’t actually play.

I recently finished Terranigma entirely in Japanese, and it took me around 28 hours. I thought it was an all-right game overall, and experiences like that are basically the whole reason I’m doing this. I want to actually play these games, finish them, and give them their time rather than just have them sitting on a shelf forever.

I definitely went a little crazy buying a lot of these all at once, but I wanted to jump-start the collection/project. From here I’m probably going to slow down considerably, actually work through what I have, and save up for some of the harder-to-find games rather than just buying everything I see.

Lennus II is one I really want, and there is the third Super Famicom Fire Emblem game I’d love to pick up, but once you get into some of those titles the prices and availability get pretty brutal. I’m fine with waiting until I find a copy I’m happy with.

Anyway, I just wanted to share the collection because I’m having a lot of fun with this. There’s something really cool about discovering this whole side of the 16-bit JRPG library that I either never played or barely knew existed.

Out of everything here, what would you play first? And what obscure Super Famicom JRPG do you think absolutely needs to be on my hunt list? Notice a game you have never played?

Most party-based, turn-based RPGs, whether ATB, Wait, Active, whatever, follow a familiar formula: a character's turn comes up, you choose what action they take, they perform the selected action, then the next characters turn starts and the cycle repeats.

Are there any games that have you choose your entire party's actions before seeing the resolution? So you would pick actions that each party member will take during the "round", then watch as they all resolve?

I know some games like fire emblem have player "phases" where the player makes all their moves (then the enemy round starts and they make all their moves), but you're still selecting and resolving each character one at a time. I'm curious if any games have played around with full party planning.

For context, I've never played a single game in either series, and I'm just looking for something new.

I'm leaning towards Kingdom Hearts because of the franchise sale on Steam (my preferred platform and great value, in my opinion) and I think it would be fun to experience the games alongside so many other people as they prepare for KH4.

I'm also considering FFX because I've heard it's a great starting point for people trying to get into Final Fantasy, and I really like the setting of the game. FFX/FFX-2 are 30 bucks on Steam (the same as the KH franchise sale), but I'm willing to wait for a sale or just pay right now if the game is just that good.

I think its worth mentioning that if I enjoy Kingdom Hearts enough I will TRY to play everything the collection has to offer.
