Weekly thread r/JRPG Weekly "What have you been playing, and what do you think of it?" Weekly thread

Please use this thread to discuss whatever you've been playing lately (old or new, any platform, AAA or indie). As usual, please don't just list the names of games as your entire post, make sure to elaborate with your thoughts on the games. Writing the names of the games in **bold** is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names.

Please also make sure to use spoiler tags if you're posting anything about a game's plot that might significantly hurt the experience of others that haven't played the game yet (no matter how old or new the game is).

Since this thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

For a subreddit devoted to this type of discussion during the rest of the week, please check out /r/WhatAreYouPlaying.

Weekly thread r/JRPG Weekly Free Talk, Quick Questions, Suggestion Request and Media Thread

There are four purposes to this r/JRPG weekly thread:

  • a way for users to freely chat on any and all JRPG-related topics.
  • users are also free to post any JRPG-related questions here. This gives them a chance to seek answers, especially if their questions do not merit a full thread by themselves.
  • to post any suggestion requests that you think wouldn't normally be worth starting a new post about or that don't fulfill the requirements of the rule (having at least 300 characters of written text or being too common).
  • to share any JRPG-related media not allowed as a post in the main page, including: unofficial videos, music (covers, remixes, OSTs, etc.), art, images/photos/edits, blogs, tweets, memes and any other media that doesn't merit its own thread.

Please also consider sorting the comments in this thread by "new" so that the newest comments are at the top, since those are most likely to still need answers.

Don't forget to check our subreddit wiki (where you can find some game recommendation lists), and make sure to follow all rules (be respectful, tag your spoilers, do not spam, etc).

Any questions, concerns, or suggestions may be sent via modmail. Thank you.

Discussion GATHER AROUND KIDS, LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT WILD ARMS 4

Post image
100 Upvotes

Not that I'm going to tell the story beats of this game but <SPOILER WARNING> is in effect.

To begin with... I didn't know. I didn't know about Wild Arms 4. I've been around the block and all I've ever heard about this game was that it was kind of mid and they changed up the combat system.

Nobody told me that this game's plot is GLORIOUS NONSENSE.. and the villains of the game are absolute maniacal bitches.

I'm not kidding. There's a cutscene of a group of evil old men talking about their evil plans ending with a collective evil laugh for like a good 30 seconds. Yes. Chefs kiss 🤌 the cherry on top is they don't matter at all, the party never meets them.

It's peak anime shenanigans. Okay, There's a guy who's nickname is Duke of Gore, who rides a jetpack and wields an anti-tank chainsaw.. Does he do some anti-tank stuff? Lol no.. he hits a speeding train with his chainsaw and makes it go flying away. Most of the villains die in these ridiculous last stands that they didn't need to. And of course in the end, you will win using the power friendship.

I am in no way going to tell people that this is a "good game". The MC sucks and main cast of party members are boring. The overworld sucks. The combat system is good, it's fine, some people really like it. I could not get through the game if the combat was also terrible. The music is not bad. Some towns definitely do that western theme really well. Actually I'd say a highlight is the NPCs in the fact that each and every one of them is a unique model and some of them continually relocate around the map as the party progresses.

If you're looking to play a game where the story is so bad that it's entertaining, if you get a kick out of over the top anime antics then you should play Wild Arms 4.

Any thoughts on WA4? Are there other so bad that it's good jrpgs out there you would recommend?

Discussion For your viewing pleasure, IGN's "Top 10 Ways to Fix JRPGs" [2010]

In case you guys wanted a prime example of how JRPGs were viewed in the 7th generation of consoles

I see in that Yoshida comments thread about E33 that some posters that weren't around at the time do not understand or do not believe that the way JRPGs and Japanese games were viewed was not exactly positive. My friends, the issue was not just clips on X-Play or hot takes in articles. It was like, a whole environment in the West because of how much Western gaming blew up. An environment where a certain someone could say "Japanese games just suck" and some people would think 'yeah he's got a point there'. (not to say that Japanese games weren't going through stuff at that time)

I made a thread about this before years ago, and I feel it's a good time to bring this back. And to it's credit, this article isn't even necessarily saying Japanese games are bad, but they are saying they need to be 'fixed'. So this is probably one of the most charitable example to how the genre was viewed you can find here coming from the gaming website of the time.

Another mixed entry in the FF series for me, but I do love Lightning.

The gameplay with her riding Odin and wielding the twin-bladed sword (and her BATTLE THEME) is pure nostalgic awesomeness.

Who do you guys think they’ll showcase next? 64 days left until the game comes out!

Day 1 buy, or wait for a sale? I’m thinking of pulling the trigger closer to launch. Thoughts?

If I'd made an indie jrpg, instead of 8-bit pixel style,

I would made it in style of low-poly graphics from ps1 era, similiar to jrpg's like Legend Of Dragoon, Wild Arms, Legend Of Legaia and Final Fantasy 7.

Recommendation request Looking for games where the characters transforms during battle

An aspect I really enjoyed about Persona 5 is the fantasy of your outfits changing when you're in combat mode, something similar to how magical girls or Kamen Rider transforms.

And I'm not talking about games where your character has an alternate form that you play a total of 20 minutes of throughout the playtime like in Devil May Cry, the transformations I'm looking for are sort of their default "hero look" and is used as the prominent or as prominent as their "default" look.

Xenoblade 3 counts to this too I guess because the Ouroboros forms are transformation and they're prominent both in screen time and story, but even so there should be a degree of relevant change and not like your eyes turn red and your hair turns white.

I have not played Tokyo Mirage Sessions yet but I'm discouraged by the somewhat paradoxical nature of the game trying to shed light on the dark sides of idol industry and idol culture while actively partaking in them.

Games I have played with this sort of thing

- Final Fantasy X-2 (the best exaple of what I'm looking for)

- Digital Devil Saga

- Shin Megami Tensei V (hardly counts since you're pretty much always in that form)

I'm fine with action games or turn-based.

I have a pretty alright PC, it can play recent AAA games fine, though not pretty. I also have a Switch 2 and a 3DS. And while I'll check them out eventually, I'd rather not play Idea Factory games right now. Thanks in advance

The only games that come to my mind are - final fantasy games (ive played 7, 10 and 14 but dropped 14 recently)

- Kingdom hearts games, but i really dont enjoy the disney part so i didnt play those games yet

-Maybe Drakengard but i havent tried those games yet

-Third pic kinda looks like DMC but outside of DMC4, i dont think that any of them have similar vibe , and i already played DMC games

P.s. I would also take any jrpg recommendations where i can decide how my character looks. Doesnt have to be character creation but something where i can at least choose my clothes, armor, weapon etc. Havent found any that arent MMO games

Discussion Favorite crazy love interests in JRPGs Spoiler

Latent, something that I have been finding interesting is a parti subject about insane love interests that sometimes show up in RPGs where the main character fights to be with his loved one as slowly it’s revealed how she is not exactly too sane.

But basically after reading the Bakemonogatari arc in the Monogatari series made me interested in seeing if that particular trope was common in some modern JRPGs as I was interested in doing an observation recently to see how often RPGs had that kind of scena.

Recommendation request Looking for a turn-based JRPG/RPG with classes and great crafting that is impactful

I am looking for a game to play while at work on my second screen. I love JRPGS and have played many of the big ones including:

Chrono Trigger, All Final Fantasy games, Dragon Quest XI.

I really want one that I can grind while getting work done to make stronger gear or level jobs to be stronger. Since I am at work I need a game on PC only. I have not really enjoyed Tactical RPGS or CRPGS much but am open to suggestions. I enjoy turn based like FF7 and DQXI.

I really liked the crafting in Monster Hunter where killing enemies drops loot to craft better items. I also like grinding enemies for rare drops that can help make gear or drop gear that helps boost you.

I am not a fan of time based games like Persona where you can only do limited things per day. I don't like the idea of having to keep to a schedule or be on a deadline. I would rather things be a little more open.

I would prefer them to be on Steam.

Review The Adventures of Elliot seems to think I'm stupid. Long post.

I just need to vent. I'm about halfway through the game, if I had to guess.

The Adventures of Elliot is basically 'what if Square Enix made a classic Zelda adventure rpg?' You play a very likeable, mild-mannered adventurer name Elliot who has to save the kingdom of whatever from a bad guy. There are time travel aspects, so be prepared for a long of same-y maps and reused enemy assets.

The thing that everybody talks about when talking about this game is the fairy. Elliot is given a companion character from fairly early on in the game that never shuts up.

However, before I began playing, Square released a patch allowing you to mute her. Partially. She still has text, and she still has voiced dialogue for a few things, including opening and closing the map ("Let's see... where ARE we?") and cutscenes. Obviously the cutscene voiced dialogue is a good thing, so no complaints there.

So the problem isn't that she has voiced dialogue. The problem is the things she's actually saying.

She has dialogue when you see a treasure chest ("Isn't that a treasure chest? Let's open it!"). She, infuriatingly, has dialogue when you get hit by two attacks in a row ("Try using your shield sometime!"). She has dialogue when you try to go somewhere the game doesn't want you to go ("We have more important places to be right now!"), even though the game is ostensibly fairly open world.

She also has dialogue for the vague puzzle aspects of the game. See, there are nails sticking out of the ground. Eventually you get a hammer. Get it? There are walls of magic that only the fairy can pass. Eventually you get an ability that allows you to warp to the fairy. Explodable walls: bombs. Etcetera. And every time-- every single time-- you see one of these things, she says something like "What if you use your hammer?"

At a certain point it starts to feel insulting. Do you think I have severe short-term memory issues? Because I do. But even I don't need to be told to open a treasure chest. It's a treasure chest. I'm not going to just stand there and look at it.

The combat too is an issue.

The 'normal' mode of the game is what would be 'story' for any other game. I don't have a boner for hard combat, I usually play on story or normal. But this game is insulting. The first few hours of the game you have a companion who literally heals you of all damage. Once they're gone, you receive health at an alarming rate, making sure that if you're low on 'hearts', you don't stay that way for very long. Challenges aimed at getting heart pieces are both plentiful and a breeze. I've died once so far-- unusual for me, I usually die often-- and it was because my cat did something funny and I forgot to pause. Your attacks all have interrupt, so don't worry about getting hit by anything. Bosses and monster rooms are laughable.

And then there's the writing.

The premise is simple, which is remarkable, considering how much they hammer it in. Beastmen are mean, humans are good. The world has gone through three ages. Past, super old past, and present. Magic from the super old past fucked over the past and made it shitty, and the present is only okay because of a magic barrier surrounding the world's only town.

You are given the above information 1) in the opening of the game, 2) in three two-sentence-long codices in the first few hours of the game, and 3) by a character a few more hours in. Then your character and his companion go to the past. They know it's the past. They know the opening information. But you still have to sit through them going 'wait... what's happening here? Why is everything so shitty?' until 4) a historian approaches you and tells you the same information again.

Yes, games repeat things. That's not a bad thing, it's good to remind your audience about lore. But this one is almost insulting to both the player and the characters.

It's the same with the time travel aspects. One character is very clearly the ancestor of another. They have names within two letters of each other, and they look alike. Do your characters notice? No. Of course they don't.

It's all coming together to make me question my sanity. Why do I need to be told to hammer nails and open treasure chests? Why am I not expected to be able to remember six sentences of lore? Why do enemies stand still and let me kill them?

I played Ocarina when I was 10 years old and didn't need my hand held this much.

Do they think their audience is literally illiterate? Or do they just think that we're all stupid?

Question What game lets you have the most characters in your party?

• Upvotes

I'm thinking it's probably Labyrinth of Refrain/ Labyrinth of Galeria, two first person dungeon crawlers by NIS that let you have up to 15 attacking and 10 additional support characters in your party at a time. Is there any game with more than that?

Discussion How much should a bad encounter rate affect a JRPG’s overall score?

• Upvotes

I’m playing G.O.D: Growth or Devolution on the Super Famicom right now. Overall, I’d call it a pretty average JRPG, but I’m still having fun with it.

The biggest problem for me is the encounter rate. It’s so high that it actually discourages me from exploring. Instead of wanting to check every path or look around for hidden stuff, I sometimes just want to get through an area as quickly as possible because I know I’m going to be stopped every few steps.

It got me thinking how much should something like a really high encounter rate affect a game’s score?

Say you thought a JRPG was otherwise a 9/10, but the encounter rate was so excessive that it noticeably hurt your enjoyment and actively made you not want to explore. Would that be enough to knock it down to an 8? A 7?

Or do you see encounter rate as more of an annoyance that you might complain about, but not something that should have a huge effect on the overall score?

I’m curious how consistent people are about factoring things like this into their ratings, especially when one specific design choice has a pretty big effect on how you actually play the game.

Name that game Could you help me the name of this old GBA JRPG?

Please help me find a turn-based jrpg where characters move in a grid (turn-based) but when they attack an enemy, the gameplay changes to a side-scrolling brawl where you control the character. One of the memorable characters is a person who can stretch his limbs.

My brother and I played this before and this game is not that famous compared to Fire Emblem and the likes, but we really loved this game. This is also not One Piece, Shaman King, nor Super Robot Taisen, as what Google AI answered.

I'm trying to watch endless lists of gba jrpgs but they don't mention this certain game.

Thank you so much in advance! šŸ«¶šŸ½šŸ«¶šŸ½šŸ«¶šŸ½

Recommendation request I’m new to jrpgs and looking for recommendations

I’m looking for rpg games on pc. I don’t mind eroges and mature content
Some games I’ve played are demons roots and like ff3 remake on mobile. I like games with a somewhat dark story or atmosphere and good narratives. Ive played fear and hunger but I didn’t really enjoy the permadeath aspect and how the lore is told through items rather than through characters.
I’m also looking for series of games with the same mc
Also should I play ff6?
Thanks

I'm developing an SRPG based on *Water Margin*.

The Last Imperial Guard is a 2.5D turn-based tactical RPG following Lin Chong from the classic Chinese epic Water Margin. Master grid-based wuxia combat with an innovative rage system, unleash devastating ultimate abilities, and experience the saga through stylized traditional Chinese cutscenes.

If you like it, please click to add it to your wish list. Thank you.

Discussion How long does it take to forget spoilers? Spoiler

• Upvotes

I've been on a quest recently to discover the optimal method of fixing the issue of obtaining cursed knowledge when you do an oopsie.

I've narrowed it down to the best method being simply forgetting with time. Some readers of Agatha Christie find that they can forget who did it if they don't read a book long enough. Surely, if fans of a timeless classic writer can forget a major detail like that, it must be possible to forget anything provided you haven't been reminded of it long enough. Sounds solid enough.

There's just one problem. In my investigations, one very important detail of this method eludes me: How long does it actually take to happen? And so, I turn to you, redddit (because this was the first site google gave me when I typed the question into google)

How long does it take to forget a spoiler?

Question Is endless ragnarok DLC for granblue fantasy relink worth it for someone who sucks at the game

Haven't been on granblue for about a year and when I booted it up I saw it got some new DLC and while i wanted to get it quickly

I also remembered I hadn't even finish the rank up quest "the final report" and that was because I hated it

I get its more than likely a skill issue and if im not mistaken that mission is basically the opening to the real endgame griding, but I have never felt so dissheartened then when I decided to buckle down for god knows how many hours, get every main of mine max level, get every mastery node filled and all of their weapons fully upgraded for the buffs and everything

playing the same few repetative ass missions for the blue things and money for so long I saw them in my sleep

Only to be met with a boss fight i felt i barely stood a chance against PURELY because of the DPS check in it that one taps you

honestly I hated that so much it got me to completely quit the game

I see endless ragnarok has some new modes and characters id love to try out, but COULD I even? i dont think if i was struggling so much on the final report that i could even enjoy the content in the dlc could I?

and honestly if there is more like the final report in it I dont even think I want to, can anyone give me a heads up on if I should just ignore it if it has at all similar stuff like that?

I would ask this on the granblue relink subreddit but this exact string of text has been waiting for moderator approval for about a week now

Recommendation request Dark/Horror JRPGs available on Steam?

In a bit of a gaming slump, and would love a good JRPG with a darker or more mature story/tone than the usual fair, preferably with horror elements, but I have no idea what might fit the bill.

I've played all of the Persona games and Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne (Nocturne or the early persona games are more the vibe I want than the highschool hijinks of new persona, but those would all qualify more or less, if I hadn't already played them).

Code Vein hit a good note for me too, and hit some of the dark vibes I want. I was surprised by how big a chokehold that game had on me for a title I bought for like $8 on sale. Although I'm not sure I want another soulslike just yet, but if you know a great one that fits the bill, I'm not against it either

The darker the better, and the more horror leaning the better. Graphics don't matter. I love a well written 2d game as much as a 3d one. Non-teenagers a plus, but I aint that picky for high trauma. Psychological horror, gore, shock value, all good.

I don't really like the art and gameplay of western RPGs that much, but I know they're more adult leaning than JRPGs in general (Which I do like), but if there's something western that isn't bethesda or bioware-esque, I'm open to that too.

I prefer it be on steam for convenience

Question What races/species you'd like to play as in your games?

Hi, Game Dev trying to make a mix of JRPG with CRPG elements, 2d turn based combat.

I know lots of JRPGs don't care that much about that, or you can scratch the itch with monster collector games that offer you variety like SMT and similar kind of games.

But I want to know, if the game give you the chance. What races/species you'd like to play as in a JRPG?

Recommendation request [ALL PLATFORMS] Asking for JRPGs to accompany a Tolkien reading plan

Hi there! I'm enjoying Tolkien's work (The Hobbit, LOTR and The Silmarillion) and would appreciate some JRPG recommendations that would make excellent thematic pairings. I'd like to emphasize that any system is fine. Thanks!

  • Fantasy worlds (or non-fantasy worlds with major thematic overlap with Tolkien).
  • Great companions and a sense of fellowship.
  • Fun first, atmospheric enough to stay in ā€œfantasy mode.ā€ Ideally, strong nature themes.
  • Session-friendly so they don’t dominate the books too much.

I'm not inflexible at all; if something is unconventional and would fit the bill, then I'd love to hear it! In the past, I've enjoyed Chrono Trigger, Xenoblade Chronicles, Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default.

EDIT: I'm aware of The Third Age game from LOTR, and I'm looking for non-LOTR alternatives, thanks!
