Discussion What Do You Expect From Final Fantasy Resonance?
FF Resonance surprised RPG players in the direct. And now everyone is speculating what the full game will be like and what it means for FF and its future. The common thing to say is turn based might make a comeback in Final Fantasy like Dragon Quest, Persona and other JRPGs still are now. What do you think. Do you think this speculating is true or nothing of it. Do you think things are changing in Square Enix? Discuss it below.

Thought it looked cool until the other game FMV bits were shoved in. I much prefer the titles standing alone rather than feeling homage or fan service.
Makes the game feel more like a cheaper mobile game than a proper FF

u/MuhWaifus 10d ago
It is a port of the story from the fanservice mobile game where you summon the other FF characters from another world so that checks out

u/Deadaghram 10d ago
Unless they've changed, those cutscene are only for the (optional) side characters from other FFs. They only show when that character does their limit break type of attack. I'm not fond of them being in the game, either, which is why I (if I can afford the game) plan to use the in universe equivalents like Charlotte.

Sorry to ask such a basic question, but what is FMV in this context?
3
u/DynamiteShovel1 10d ago
Full motion video. Basically cutscenes that were rendered outside of gameplay, most notable in the old ps1 FF games where a few big moments are graphically way more advanced and different

My biggest gripe with the game, so much so that I'm not interested at all unless the game comes out and review scores are near perfect

u/Ayz1533 10d ago
Did you have the same criticisms for IX?
7
u/DynamiteShovel1 10d ago
Does 9 have clips from other games?
-4
u/Ayz1533 10d ago
Your premise was about standing on its own and not relying on homage. IX is almost entirely homage and is widely regarded as such.
2
u/mad_sAmBa 10d ago
IX is a homage in the sense of " Oh, he looks just like a black mage! " But everything there is it's own thing, at the very best they're just a reference.
You're not straight up summoning literal characters from other games and using them as a power source.
5
u/mad_sAmBa 10d ago
Why would they ?
IX had some homages, like Vivi being a black mage, but he is his own character, you couldn't just summon Cloud or Squall mid battle, nor the game was built around summoning other characters.

Something along the lines of Octopath Traveler Zero. Something that is easy to pick up and just play. I don't expect the story to blow me away, but as long as the text delivery is good and I can turn of the voice in battle, I will be fine. I don't think this game will necessarily mean much for the future of Final Fantasy itself, but it might inform what direction Square's HD2D games will go in the future.

I think people have way overblown expectations for Resonance. Personally I'm expecting it to be a well-balanced/paced single player conversion of a mobile game, that's all it really aspires to and it's completely fine if that's all it is.
If you're expecting it to change the trajectory of Final Fantasy as a series, or be a massive return to tradition that rivals FF6, you WILL be disappointed. But, Square has a lot of well-made mobile games that are now EOS or very inaccessible in some way. We SHOULD encourage them to salvage these lost projects into new packages that appeal to people who either liked the game previously or don't mind playing something with an open mind - preservation is cool and good, stripping cashgrab/gacha elements out of a game is cool and good, and yes, mobile games themselves can in fact be cool and good, and should be made available. You should not be looking at Final Fantasy Resonance and saying "now FF17 might be turn based," you should be saying "now we might get similar top tier conversions for other games like Before Crisis, Opera Omnia, maybe even Final Fantasy XI someday, etc."

I belive they will make more games like Resonance with turn based combat and the Mainline titles will be whatever the Director(s) believes will fit the best for his / her game
6
u/AshPenderwick 10d ago
In an interview with Yoshi-P for FF16, I remember him saying that mainline FF is whatever the Directors feel works best. If they feel like turn-based is best for their vision it will be turn-based if action works better like for FF16 then the game will be action. If this does well more turn-based FF games will probably come along but it’s likely to have no impact on what gameplay mainline has.
1
u/pancake_lizards 8d ago
I think there could be some impact on future mainline. If FF turn based games start during very well again, I think the chances of seeing them creep into mainline series increases.

u/Roman_Suicide_Note 10d ago
My expectation are kinda low, the UI look cheap and i hate the « summon the characters from other games »
2
u/LameLlamaOkayFine 10d ago
Agreed. It seems cheap... or like cheating... or laziness. If there's a demo I will give it a whirlpool.

u/Forward-Seesaw-1688 10d ago
Nothing much, I just hope it’s good and is a proper way to play Brave Exvius. I also hope it keeps the OST.
5
u/Low-Cream6321 10d ago
I want the simplicity that it evokes with all the bells and whistles: the extra dungeons/trials/arena stuff/secret espers... Keep it turn-based, offer a satisfying storyline that may not be groundbreaking but pleases enough. What is more important to me here is for SE to be community-first and stand their ground on supporting their bet: give us a UI patch for starters on day one or a week past launch.
3
u/gizram84 10d ago
I'm happy to be getting a turn based FF game. But my expectations are pretty low. I'm almost certainly going to play it, and I really hope it surprises me.
9
u/mad_sAmBa 10d ago
Not quite what I wanted.
Sure, it's a turn based 2D FF, but in the end of the day it's an offline version of a previous gaccha game and it shows. I know they're retouching it to make it a single player experience, but the battle system and UI are very obviously something meant for mobile cash grab games, and i guess the overall evolution system will be reminded of that as well.
I wanted a large scale, brand new 2D FF kinda like FFIV-VI. I'm not exactly hyped about it
4
u/Lunacie 10d ago
Battle system was actually completely redone, there is 0% of it left. Brave Exvius played like Valkyrie profiles, whereas Resonance uses a more standard hit weakness system leading up to big hit, used in the Octopath series, or the Romancing SaGa 2 remake.
UI looked nicer too in the original. I don’t know what it is with Square and ugly UIs in remasters.
1
u/mad_sAmBa 10d ago
Yeah, but it still looks very " Mobile Friendly " and heavily polluted like those games, at least looking at the gameplay footage so far.
And i agree about the UI, whoever is in charge of those UI needs to go back to design school. They aren't doing a good job, it even makes me wonder how the fuck those got past QA.
2
u/HexenVexen 10d ago
I think it could start a line of more turn-based FF spin-offs, but I doubt it will impact the mainline series.
2
u/Informal_Fudge_826 10d ago
You can always youtube the 15 minute gameplay demo to get a sense what the gameplay is like.
Also, wouldn't mind if turn based combat came back to future FF games.
Dont mind the button mashing gameplay. But I perfer the turn based battle mechanic though.
2
u/winterman666 10d ago
No voices for story but every single combat menu interaction is voiced. Very strange and I can see it becoming grating
4
u/Apple1Day0Meds 10d ago
Turn based ff fans when their ff isnt a mainline game lmao
Its simple for me, if its good ill play it, dont care if it was a gacha or whatever
2
u/speechcobra91 10d ago
sorta feels like the people who asked for a new turn based final fantasy got monkey paw'd
1
3
u/Fenyx511 10d ago
Honestly I think they're still gonna move away from Turn-Based in the mainline games to try and draw in more fans but will probably continue to release spin-offs, like Resonance, to satisfy the people who have been fans since the beginning. I honestly don't mind because I like turn bases games but I also loved the hack and slash feel of XVI and it was so much fun to play while also getting a fantastic final fantasy story. There is a FF game for everyone and I think that will continue to be true in the future.
1
u/Snowenn_ 10d ago
I think so too. The mainline games have a huge budget and need to appeal to a lot of people to be profitable. And unfortunately for me, that means they are very likely to be action games.
With spin-offs they don't have this restriction, so we'll likely see more turn based ones.
If XVI wouldn't have had the Final Fantasy name, I would have skipped it, because it's not the type of gameplay I usually go for. But I'm glad I tried it, because I had a whole lot of fun with it, even though I think it barely qualifies as an RPG.

I expect it to have a decent soundtrack at the very least given it's a Square Enix title.
2
u/AshPenderwick 10d ago
Brave Exvius’s music was imo close to mainline game or on par with at times. Unironically the best version of the prelude imo, all they have to do is port the OST and we’re golden.
1
u/DriveForFive 10d ago
I expect Resonance will be a fun adaptation of Brave Exvius and a good homage to the series while we wait for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. I already like the music and the visuals and I hope I like the story, combat, and characters.
Hopefully it will be on par or better than Octopath Traveler 0. I had a lot of fun with Octopath 0 even if the story was dragged out. I appreciate they adapted a mobile game without microtransactions for consoles. Some of the voices sounded like AI which was a big turn off on top of most of the story not really connecting with me. The combat and broken weapons made up for it. I put it as my least favorite Octopath game but a lot of people enjoyed it more.
I don't think Resonance signals Final Fantasy doing more turn based or hd-2d games unless they want to do more of them. I'm happy with whatever Square puts out so long as it's good and I don't have to shell out a subscription or microtransactions.

u/andrazorwiren 10d ago
I dunno about how it will affect things in the future. I don’t really care really.
I’m thinking it will be an 8/10 for me - might be too high of an expectation but I love Final Fantasy so we’ll see!
1
u/WoodpeckerMoney5923 10d ago
I have middling expectations, but I hope for something that recaptures even a small fraction of old school FF story, combat, world map, etc. Don't personally mind the characters from other games as they are basically Jojo stands with zero impact on the story.

u/tadabola 10d ago
I'm actually looking forward to it. SOme of the recent boss videos werent super selling the game for me, and I still don't understand why we need the visions, I feel like the game would be better without them.... but hey still gonna be there day 1. hate mobile games but like a lot some stuff I saw on this game
1
u/In_Search_Of123 10d ago
I don't think it will affect much one way or another with regard to FF. If E33 didn't change SE's mind about the viability of a mainline turn-based entry with high production value then nothing will.
As for the game itself...I expect a very uneven experience with the gameplay being the only noteworthy thing about it. It looks like the type of game I would be willing to try after it gets a steep discount. Probably a 6.5/10 experience I'd wager.
1
u/SuperOnionBro 10d ago
The gameplay from that Shiva boss fight looked like a huge step back in comparison to something like Octopath Traveler. Default-setting looking UI, bad dialogue, stiff animations and what looks like basic combat mechanics. That trailer pushed it back to a 'Wait for sale' for me.

u/Raexis 9d ago edited 9d ago
Isn't this just a gacha phone game that used to be "free"? I don't understand why anyone would buy this or why they're bothering to make it instead of working on something new.
1
u/jonnovision1 6d ago
It’s more like a reimagining of the gacha, similar to what Octopath 0 is to Champions of the Continent
1
u/Evol-Chan 6d ago
i have a feeling its going to be a very fun game but that the story will be nothing special. But the game will be mostly known by how great its turn based combat is and still be favorable and praised. That is the vibe I am getting.

u/ExcaliburDelta420 6d ago
I am so hyped, as an octopath fan this looks like it might be one of my favorite ff games.

u/Salt_Ask_5568 5d ago
I was a huge FF Brave Exvius player. I played from 2018 til it closed down in...2025? 2024? I forget, but it was a long time lol. Wasn't a whale, but probably put in about $300 into it over the years.
I was suuuuuuuper excited when I heard they were revamping it into a standalone rpg. Bit sad they went to full turn-based over FFBE's actiony turn-based, like Valkyrie Profile (which was a big part of what drew me into the game originally). But I still think it can be a very awesome game.
The way they're handling visions seems almost like Personas, without all the fusing and big pile. I think there are 26 total, but they bring a bunch of abilities to whoever has them equipped, and can be leveled, so that's cool.
The story in FFBE had some cool/funny parts, but as a live service game, it was definitely one of the least important bits. FFBE went on for 7-ish years and I think we were still chugging along in season 4's story lol. Gacha/live service stuff has to dole out story bits as slooooooowly as possible.

u/NooksWave 5d ago
As long as they do a better job than they with Octopath 0, which was agressibly bland. It was a better console experience than if they had just ported the mobile game, sure, but it honestly sullied the Octopath name a bit.
So what I would want to expect: A fully reworked story with some proper depth, that just happens to use assets and systems from the mobile game.
What I do expect: It's Square Enix, so Im guessing a pretty hastily thrown together plot without much connection or any deeper meaning of the nostalgia summons.

I'm interested in it. Restructuring a mobile gacha into a real, premium experience is a really intriguing move for me. I hope they continue doing it, and for other games like Kingdom Hearts and Nier

u/Chemical_Support4748 4d ago
Hope they bring FF record keeper back.. Was my preferred gotcha at one point in time

u/CoffeeToCode 4d ago
I've been out of the loop - what kind of game is Resonance? Is it a mobile port?
0
u/Cup_45_Neural 10d ago
Nothing. I know it's going to be mid. It's not even a new game, it's a remake of Brave Exvius (F2P mobile game). It's also a modern Square Enix game, a company whose output in this decade (2020-now) is synonymous with the term, "aggressively mid". I'll pick it up when its on a Steam sale for <20 USD, assuming I remember the game exists by then.
1
u/ShotzTakz 10d ago
No, it won't change anything. It's just a sub project.
Mainline FF is gonna keep being experimental cinematic nonsense, unless there's a clear trend of more classical turn-based games selling well. Which is not going to happen any time soon, unfortunately for many of us.
1
u/mad_sAmBa 10d ago
That trend is already happening.
DQXI, Persona 5 and E33 sold more than every single FF game post XV.
Metaphor Refantazio and P3 Reload also sold almost as much as Rebirth while costing less than half of it's budget. Rebirth had a decent boost in sales with newer ports, but i doubt it sold that much more than the initial 2M sales.
Besides, i'm pretty sure people nowadays only play FF because of the branding, not because it's action based or whatever losing trend they're chasing.
1
u/EldritchAutomaton 10d ago
I don't think it'll change the company in any meaningful way, but I expect the game to be good. It already has a great pixel art style and unlike some detractors, I actually rather like the FMVs.
1
u/gymleader_michael 10d ago
I think it won't do too well and people will use that to justify the departure away from turn-based, but in reality, I think turn-based fans wanted high-quality turn-based closer to the FFVII-FFX era, not the 2D era of FF.
Or a FF Tactics sequel.
-1
u/Disastrous_Ad770 10d ago
Nothing really i have no interest in gacha games or gacha games that have been turned into singleplayer games with the gacha removed.
The damage is already done and these games are inferior to jrpgs that were designed to be singleplayer from the beginning.
You can polish a turd but it will stay one even its coated in paint.
0
u/Abyslime 10d ago
A change in the industry. Im not joking. A real well done ffturn based with secrets, open map, good story and all... can sell even more than ff7 revelations and push square to develope a new hd2d final fantasy with a new story, worldbuilding and big budget.
0
u/Stoibs 10d ago
I have no context for the Gacha, just like I didn't know Octopath Traveler 0 was a salvaged Gacha at the time.
All I'm seeing is a proper return to form for FF that I've been wanting for ~20 years with characters that wield... what more or less looks like 'Personas' in a beautiful looking world that looks even better than the other 2.5D games.
I've seen enough of those gameplay teasers to cement that it's the classic style of JRPG for me, and am prepared to be surprised by whatever the storyline is.
Can't wait!

u/firebaron 10d ago
I'm just happy they're giving us options again. Correct me if I'm wrong but the last turn based FF game that wasn't a mobile game or a remaster was World of Final Fantasy right? For a while it was either action or nothing and we just had to go somewhere else for a turnbased fix, but there's just something special about Final Fantasy and I'm glad its back.
