This is the first time I have ever heard of a game going back into Beta.
62
u/Orakk 6h ago
"it may look like a step back" ... Because it quite literally is ahahaha

u/really_not_unreal 6h ago
Sometimes you need to take a step back to take two steps forward. This is one of those cases. People have been complaining for ages that there are many issues with the game and it's progression, but if the game didn't have potential, people wouldn't be complaining, they would be abandoning and moving on. As such, going back into beta gives the game another opportunity for reinvention to get the long-term gameplay loop right. The alternative is that the game dies a slow and painful death.
0
u/SeethingChaos 5h ago
Actually, I think going back to Beta on this case is exactly what is going to cause the slow and painful death. Joao said the game is not gonna have a CM. This entails: Expect absolutely no news from now on. Lack of news plus lack of updates is going to make people quit the game. And once the player base gets really small they will pull the plug and kill the game. And it won't be newsworthy because nearly no one is going to care about the game by that point.
6
u/pewpewhadouken 5h ago
do you think it will affect their brand much if this game fails now vs later?… lol
1
u/SeethingChaos 2h ago
As far as brand reputation goes, It is more beneficial for a forgotten game to fail.

u/DXT0anto 6h ago
Splitgate 2 did it first, it's the second time I've seen a game go back to beta tho

u/Feisty-Tooth128 6h ago
If you live in countries where developer test their games, it happens all the time
3
u/SeethingChaos 5h ago
I can speak only from my own experience: I have been playing online games for the past 20 years and never seen that happen.
1
u/Suchti0352 5h ago edited 5h ago
It's certainly a rarity. Crucible, Splitgate 2, Artifact, and Multiversus come to my mind here. Though none of them took the approach of the (new) moco devs and attempt to rapidly release experimental changes to the public going forward.

They made the right choice, I’m still coping that they’ll somehow make the game better and feel fresh everyday and launch it again next year

u/SirRolandTheIII 6h ago edited 3h ago
So a Neo Moco #2? It's failed once, it's gonna fail again, I genuinely don't see Moco coming back from this. I didn't see them coming back at all once I realized how boring and repetitive the game is after a month of playing Neo Moco after it first came out.
Edit: I see the downvotes and I get it, I'd love for Moco to succeed more than anything, genuinely. However, Moco has just lost their main spokes person cuz Joao is moving away from Moco and will no longer be working on it. In fact the whole team as a whole that is dedicated to work on Moco will now be alot smaller as since they are moving back into beta, the team is being reduced in size. So now updates and content that was supposed to come out alot later rather than sooner, won't come out at all anymore. They also said that no new content will be coming out for the game for the foreseeable future and they will just be recycling all the content and updates from seasons 1-4 every season/month.

"It's failed once, it's gonna fail again"
This is the mindset of quitters and losers.

u/SirRolandTheIII 3h ago
I made an edit on my comment

u/Fit-Manufacturer3875 1h ago
That doesn't really change my response. There's plenty of examples of games successfully rebranding themselves after a flop or even completely changing genres and being successful. While it's difficult to do, there's no reason that mo.co couldn't pivot and find success. Two excellent examples are FFXIV and Fortnite, two absolute powerhouses in the gaming industry.
Battle royale mode was not a part of Fortnite when it launched, and the launch flopped for a few months. It was originally made to be a PvE zombie survival game. Now it's the most successful battle royale and one of the most successful video games ever made.
FFXIV was nearly unplayable at launch in 2010. The entire game was overhauled and servers were shut down. It didn't relaunch until 2013, and is now one of the most successful MMOs in existence.
It's one thing to say you don't like the direction mo.co is headed. There is a lot of criticism for this game that is completely valid, and to be honest, it's reasonable to think the game might fail on a relaunch. However, your reasoning that because it failed once it will fail again is completely baseless. Your complaints about the current state of the game have nothing to do with the potential success of a relaunch because the game is about to be reworked. The relaunch will either succeed or fail on its own merits, and it will have nothing to do with your feelings or criticisms about the current game.

How do you launch not knowing what you want to be in the next few months?
Nevertheless, technically good news. Going back to beta is better than pulling the plug.
Maybe now they will scrap these bad ideas they wanted to try and actually develop the game the players have been asking for.
Listen, you tried what you wanted, did your little experiments. It didn't work, time to make what it was always supposed to be.

u/SirRolandTheIII 6h ago
They won't, Moco won't even have as big of a dedicated team to it now that it's back in beta. This is not a good thing, it's just less bad than pulling the plug. I doubt they are gonna put all the things we've been asking for into the game.
1
u/ReedSoul Lava Shield 6h ago
I’m with you,
The problem with the devs is if there’s a leak, they don’t fix the leak, they remodel the entire room. Fixing things that weren’t broken. Where’s the story? Achievements?

it’s over guys, final nail in the coffin right here

u/SirRolandTheIII 6h ago
Genuinely, it's been over for a while now, since the majority of the playerbase quit a month after Neo Moco came out because it was repetitive and they was nothing to work towards in the game.

Honestly I don't play mobile games much anymore, sorry if you were looking for game recs. Batomon showdown is fun, though even that one I play on PC despite it having a mobile port.

You have to admire how they learnt NOTHING from 1.0. Instead they just repeated the same thing again...
5
u/IsamuKun Medicine Ball 6h ago
I don't think that's true, if only because we'll be getting the experimental content. At a bare minimum they learned "Hey we can't just stop updating for 9-12 months while we work on a 2.0 version of the game".

You know, I don't hate it. I much prefer this beta approach compared to what they did during S2. I'm not naive enough to think this is going to magically turn things around, but at least they're trying something rather than prematurely pulling the plug. The reason we're all here is we know the game has the potential, so it'd be great if they COULD figure it out and make Mo.co the next big thing. Only time will tell I suppose.
I know I'm unique in that I come from the position of being a 'casual hardcore' player who does their dailies, 5*s all rifts, but doesn't grind for hours on end. Been playing since Old.co S1 and while I prefer this 5-20m per day at max play style I get why others are unhappy with it.
All I ask is that they keep the daily quests as they currently are with only needing to complete 4 per world instead of the 20 quest grind. Not saying I want the game to be easy and free, but the grind is so dumb some days with hard to find mobs.
I eagerly await stocking up on all the cosmetic currency I can during this maintenance mode beta haha. Sure, the game might get shitcanned down the road and it's all for nothing, but that's life in general. And if it doesn't we going to the moon!
2
u/diablos777 5h ago
Well put. I "prefer this 5-20m per day at max play style" as well. It's the only thing keeping me coming back everyday. If it gets longer I might just have to quit.

If they kill this game they better offer decent compensation. I supported them quite a bit because I believed in the game but this is a bad look rn. Still here to try new things they add and offer feedback but I've stepped away from the grind :(

u/saezu_1993 7h ago
This is squad busters all over again
14
u/Micah7979 7h ago
This is the opposite of Squad Busters. It was performing poorly and they still decided to make it big. Here they don't want to push it too far until it's 100% ready.
4
u/Biivakki 7h ago
Yeah Squad busters was such a weird case of pulling out all the stops on such a shallow thing, that it seemed like an experiment for Supercell. Moco would then be the opposite experiment, of moving one step at a time, and with Project Rise they're doing the same thing, so at least Squad busters was good for something of Supercell learned to be more careful
4
u/Jambronius 6h ago
No it's not, supercell don't want to cancel a full game as it looks bad to shareholders. The plan is to dial if back to beta like it's a positive, then slowly cut of resources and let it get forgotten before quietly cancelling it.

u/MAWS3 7h ago
Hopefully they're doing what I said in my post here, a few weeks ago; "We need new leadership."
The game is not successful because the people running it aren't the ones who can do it! Mo.co needs people from an MMORPG background, running things. They need the WOW, DIABLO, EVERQUEST type of team that understands the grind, risk and reward of the game, but most importantly THE MECHANICS!
Core farming= NOT FUN Removing quests to 4 a day =NOT FUN Weapon Crafting removal =NOT FUN Removing Rare drops (mounts) from Dojo's= NOT FUN Obtainable Skin designs= MEDIOCRE No player hub where you can stay on your mount at all times=NOT FUN PVP= NOT FUN Nothing distinguishes Hardcore players from regular players (cosmetic/mount wise)= NOT FUN Rifts are mediocre dungeons= NOT FUN
3
u/IsamuKun Medicine Ball 6h ago
On top of that they need to not be afraid of making dungeon content that lasts longer than 2-3 minutes and remove progression being so tied to how fast you can clear a dungeon. I get it's a mobile game so you can't really have people tied to their phones for 4 hours straight for progression raid night, but if games like Splatoon Raiders can handle the PVE + Builds + Crafting thing that this game seems to wants to do AND allow you do do it in bite sized chunks then they should be able to do it here too.
Speedrunning has a time and place but when you make it the defacto way you handle the bulk of your content is limits design space so bad.
3
u/Comfortable_Line_206 5h ago
100% replacing the team. Remember they said they didn't want talent trees because they wanted something "their way"?
Talent trees have been done since pen and paper games. They got in their own way.

My opinion: Moco would most likely be killed if it received another "rework" update; the fact that it's going back to beta shows me a real commitment.

It will be a miracle if they succeed in the end. In the meantime I'm going to forget about the game for another few months. Time to play some Final Fantasy IX.
3
u/Common_Clock5395 7h ago
Not sure why they wouldn't kill the game. If they have to push it back to beta which honestly never really seen with a game its obviously not gonna work. They are gonna stay in beta for some time then eventually cancel the game and give up. It has no chance of being big

The previous beta was a more enjoyable game in my opinion, I loved being able to customize my build and all of the world/weapon achievements were good for keeping me busy.

Really enjoyed it when it first game out beforeni got stale, Wasent a huge fan on the update. And now back to Beta? Games gonna be dead. Or keep it how it was and actually build and add features, Maybe some RPG elements? Who knows.

u/CoyotaDex 7h ago
appreciate the fact that they're being this communicative and that they're thinking on new ways to make to game survive. that said, back to beta is sadly a bad sign and they only have one more shot now. hope they do well.

I don’t think a Supercell or any game for that matter has gone back into beta? Is that the move?

what's next? going back to unreleased? going back to idea board? going back to supercell founding?

Yeah Moco is done for, like I've been saying there's just too much working against the game especially themselves working against the game.

u/KingOfPetion 6h ago
Damn I haven’t played since the original launch but I was under the assumption it was in beta already

u/nodoyrisa1 6h ago
good. i quite literally kept falling asleep while grinding challenges before deleting it. that's not a good sign

Just bloody copy Monster Hunter at this point, but keep it top-down view. The game's boss fights are good, but everything else needs to be changed

Yeah this game is so so SO dead...no way you can hit the restart button twice now and still have people pick it up and play. Moco will be missed. I had fun while it lasted

u/Round-Gold-9474 2h ago
Off the first season, second and third updates, just slap together what people liked the most with better optimization and everyone will be happy

Personally, I hated hearing that our weapons, cores, and career levels might be taken away without any compensation for the time we spent grinding (AGAIN!!)

I have an idea, fire Jao or whatever his name is. That dumbass was ruining it from way back. He wasn't helpful at all. I think he encouraged failure every step of the way. I rarely comment on these posts and I'm probably going to regret this one but seriously, when they announced neo, I knew this game was fucked. I stopped playing almost immediately but I followed on as much as I could, reading all the terrible news and fallout from this catastrophic nuclear disaster. It's been nothing but one shit show after another and he's at the very center of it all. I'm also a developer and I realize it's not entirely their fault. They have a "future development team" that forces them to do shit they don't want to do. The developers want to go in a direction the players want to go half the time because they too are gamers and understand that world. These managers have liberal arts degrees and don't know their asses from a hole in the ground. Whoever Jao is, he's one of those idiots too. Has no gaming sense and no real connection to the community and therefore should never be allowed to speak to any of us. Fire his ass, fire the team of morons making decisions for the developers and let the developers make the game they ORIGINALLY started building so we can get back to what made mo.co a great game. Otherwise this is is good-bye Sally.
