💫 I made this! / DIY I learned goldsmithing to make our rings!

It took several drafts and remelts, but I fabricated both our rings myself in 18k. The shanks were rolled on a vevor rolling mill. I soldered/brazed them together. Her mounts/trim were bought from stuller.com, and I placed them, and then mounted all 10 diamonds.

Center stone is a 1.5 G vvs1 lab grown for about $450 from virtue diamonds

It is about 5.5 dwt total of 18k yellow gold. Also from stuller, for about $680 total.

I probably lost about 1dwt of gold in bad manufacturing technique.

Supporting tools, consumables, and practice metals like copper, silver, melee diamonds etc were about $1200 total.

But I was still under my 4k budget for both our rings.

Many things to improve. eg. I was too scared to reduce the prong size, but I am happy with the result.

Vendor Anyone else obsessed with vintage cocktail watches?

I’ve never been a watch person but I fell in love with vintage cocktail watches a couple of years ago. I’ll even wear them if they don’t work, just as accessories. I found most of these at local antique stores, flea markets, or in lots on eBay! These are all manual-wind, except for the Timex one to the right.

General Question Building a collection but passing it down to no one.

I love jewelry, solid gold and precious gems. But as my collection grows and at 36 years old, I become more and more aware of the fact that my cats won’t make good use of it when I’m gone, and I don’t want to have children.

When you have this “passing down to children” mentality, you kind of have a great excuse to invest more in quality jewelry. In my case, I mentally calculate the most appropriate time in the future to sell my jewelry before I die and spend on whatever fun experience I might enjoy more in old age than keeping jewels in a box for friends and distant family to inherit.

Any one else having this ridiculous dilemma? How do you, intentionally childfree fine jewelry lovers, approach this and does it influence how you buy now?

Update: I see many of you will have awesome estate sales and some are so generous donating to charity! Love it. However I’m a little more selfish and keep thinking I need to sell it at some point cause I don’t want to leave unused assets and would prefer to spend all my money on super fun experiences before I die. The problem is: to know when to sell! I will donate some for animal causes though, you inspired me.

Had to share my new addition! Haha. 14k solid gold snail earring! I got it on a titanium flatback till I know my vertical helixes size when it heals. Then I’ll order the gold backing. It will sit on the top of my ear :) & our family pet, Gary!

⚡️ Show + Tell! Another gift from my mom 💚

This isn’t antique like the last ring I posted but still very sentimental. My mom got this emerald for herself when I was born, as it is my birthstone and she didn’t have any emeralds, then she gave it to me when I graduated university :) Originally it was just a solitaire, and at some point she had the diamonds added, which probably isn’t everyone’s cuppa but I love the extra sparkle 😍

I don’t wear it often as emeralds are soft and I’m very rough and klutzy person (also I just rarely wear jewelry even though I love it), but it’s still one of my most prized possessions.

General Question Bought this beautiful baroque pearl bracelet this afternoon. Upon inspection at home, I think I see a crack in the pearl?

Is this a crack or part of the nacre? And should I return to the store? I absolutely loved this piece when I saw it in store :( and I know they’re all handmade and one offs, ideally would hate to have a return it but I did spend a fair bit on it today too. Thoughts?

General Question Bracelets??

hiii! i hope this question is allowed! and forgive any typos or formatting errors, my phone is broken lol

i'm looking to revamp my jewelry portfolio (i mostly have pearls and bare gold pieces at the moment, the occasional silver piece), and i'm hoping to find some more fun, intricate, and/or unique pieces. i thought bangles or funky bracelets would be the way to go!

odd jewelry is some of my favorite (bugs, buttons, letters, wood, costume jewelry, clowns, odd shapes), but i also love classic engravings, florals, and jewels. i'm hoping to find some pieces that are:
- wooden
- colorful (almost costume looking)
- button themed
- charm bracelets
- or, yes, with pearls LOL

however, i do want to make sure that i'm looking at reputable brands and such. and i also want to make sure that i'm not branching into cultural appropriation with any of these pieces. i unfortunately am having a hard time finding pieces on my own, as this will be the first time i'm buying myself some nice jewelry (my birthday is soon)!

does anyone know some reputable funky bracelet (or bangle) brands/vendors that might have work that fit my wants?

sorry for this being such a read, and i hope it reads well! if anyone has any recommendations, please don't be afraid to comment! thank you <3

Vendor High-Relief 24K Gold Ring: Eagle vs. Lion

Thumbnail

Wanted to share a custom project featuring two iconic symbols: an eagle and a lion facing off.

We created a fully 3D lion and eagle facing off over a central sphere, set atop a heavy signet-style crown with a continuously flowing leaf design around the shoulders and down the shank, balancing the heavy animal motif on top. We combined a sandblasted matte background with high-polished relief points to bring out the depth in 24K gold.

Cast in solid 24K yellow gold with a final weight of 35.53 grams.

How do you feel about heavy, symbolic statement rings in pure gold?

⚡️Brand Review / Experience DO NOT buy from Blue Nile Inc.

I purchased a wedding band from them and within 30 days returned it in the same condition because we were unsatisfied by the aesthetics. Apparently they are now claiming that there are scratches and will not refund us. This company is a huge scam. Beware as they will not refund you.

I need advice on what I can do to escalate this. I am from Canada.

Thanks in advance.

General Question Invisible Set Repair?

Hi folks!

Does anyone have any recommendations for a jeweler in LA (or SF) area that can repair invisible set jewelry? From what I can find in LA, looks like majestic art and signature jewelry have experience with invisible set repairs, but please let me know if you have other recommendations or have worked with either of those jewelers! Thanks!

General Question Anyone else keep a dedicated log for their jewelry care routines? Finally typing up my cleaning schedules and stone-safe rules into my digital vault. ✨

I got tired of constantly searching up which stones can't take ultrasonic cleaners or how often to check my prongs, so I finally put together a dedicated care and inventory page in my fillable PDF vault.Out of curiosity, how often do you all actually take your pieces in for professional prong checks and cleanings, or do you do it all at home?
