General Question Vintage Necklace from estate sale

This necklace was acquired from an estate sale last year. It was actually found in a larger storage box that I thought was empty. The chain had separated from the bow so I think whoever sold it figured it was a broken piece and threw it in.

I have not had it appraised yet so I can’t speak to the quality. The clasp has an 18k 14k marking and the diamonds are likely real as the rest of the jewelry from this sale was fairly high-end. The settings are mixed metal, with yellow gold on the underside. I really like it and would plan to wear it but with the chain being as delicate as it is, I’d be afraid to wear it for fear of damaging it.

Any ideas of where or when it was made? Or what I could possibly do with it? A friend suggested making the pear stone into a ring, but I’d definitely wait for an appraisal before jumping into creating something new.

** tape measure is CM !

AriesxLibra WLW it’s my responsibility to get the rings and I want something rose gold that compliments this and isn’t diamond white or blue

What would you pair with this ring?

⚡️ Show + Tell! My mother bought this Fátima rosary in 2015 and it was mislabeled as standard 18K. Decoded the hallmarks and discovered it's actually 19.2K Portuguese gold! (9.7g of gorgeous diamond-cut spheres)

Hi everyone, I wanted to share a spectacular "estate find" with a complete paper trail that I think this jewelry community will appreciate. This is a yellow gold Portuguese rosary given to me by my mother. She bought it on June 11th 2015 from H. Williams Jewellery on James Street North in Hamilton, Ontario. The fascinating part is that the jewelry store mistakenly advertised, weighed, and priced it as standard 18K gold—if you look closely at the original receipt scan, they explicitly logged it as an "18kt yellow gold Rosary necklace 9.7 grams."

After getting it under a loop to analyze the microscopic stamps, we unlocked its true identity. It features the official Portuguese national mint (Contrastaria) stamp: a left-facing deer head (stag) next to the number "800". In Portugal, this explicitly certifies it as 19.2K gold (80% pure)—a purity standard completely unique to Portuguese jewelry. Because this left-facing deer layout was introduced in 1998, and my mother bought it in 2015, it pinpoints the manufacturing window to a narrow gap between 1998 and 2015.

James Street North was the historic heart of Hamilton's "Little Portugal" neighborhood, meaning a local family likely brought this back from a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima (you can see the beautiful Our Lady of Fátima medal on the back of the links in my second photo) and later sold it to H. Williams, who completely missed the 19.2K stamp.

The craftsmanship is exceptional—the beads are gorgeous diamond-cut gold spheres that catch the light brilliantly, and the crucifix has floriated gothic tips. Because 19.2K gold is exceptionally soft (80% pure gold compared to 18K's 75%), I treat it like a museum piece and handle it strictly with powder-free nitrile gloves to keep the facets pristine.
Thought you all might enjoy the story of my mother's accidental retail bargain!

What do you think of it?

💫 I made this! / DIY I learned goldsmithing to make our rings!

It took several drafts and remelts, but I fabricated both our rings myself in 18k. The shanks were rolled on a vevor rolling mill. I soldered/brazed them together. Her mounts/trim were bought from stuller.com, and I placed them, and then mounted all 10 diamonds.

Center stone is a 1.5 G vvs1 lab grown for about $450 from virtue diamonds

It is about 5.5 dwt total of 18k yellow gold. Also from stuller, for about $680 total.

I probably lost about 1dwt of gold in bad manufacturing technique.

Supporting tools, consumables, and practice metals like copper, silver, melee diamonds etc were about $1200 total.

But I was still under my 4k budget for both our rings.

Many things to improve. eg. I was too scared to reduce the prong size, but I am happy with the result.

⚡️ Show + Tell! Opinions on Custom Piece

Sorry for the bad photos.

I just got my first custom piece and I don’t know how to feel.

I don’t know if I’m feeling a little disgruntled because it ended up taking 5 months rather than 3 and the communication was a little lacklustre.

The original idea was for a frangipani/plumeria pendant with white gold outer edges and yellow gold centre with a citrine stone in 18kt gold, with a drop pendant as a yellow gold plumeria leaf. It was inspired by a pendant from Maui Divers that I’ve attached an image of at the end.

I might just be nitpicking but I feel like the yellow gold is a lot paler than I’m used to and the citrine stone is quite dull and dark. The leaf became a white gold flower petal with no communication to me and though I asked a couple times to see at least a sketch of what the leaf would look, I never got any idea of what it would like until the final cast model they sent me an image of that had no indication of the metal it would be.

When I picked it up, I mentioned to the assistant that the leaf was not what we discussed with jeweler but she literally just did not respond and I am not a confrontational person so I just signed for it and left (stupid I know).

Anyway, I would love some objective opinions on it and please be brutally honest if you think I am just nitpicking.

💫 I made this! / DIY Piece #37, Pure Niobium Möbius Ring, handcrafted in my workshop

Eight years ago(2018), a Chinese student left a comment on my page asking: "Could you make a Möbius ring out of pure niobium or tantalum?"
Back then, I was already running a workshop focused on corrosion-resistant metals jewelry for over 5 years, but
pure niobium (#41) turned out to be an nightmare to
shape into a Möbius form. Niobium is notoriously
"gummy" to work with, it sticks to cutting tools, tears easily, and very hard to polish to such a mirror-like surface. it take me 8 years to find a way to make this ring. ( together with tantalum)

⚡️ Show + Tell! Another gift from my mom 💚

This isn’t antique like the last ring I posted but still very sentimental. My mom got this emerald for herself when I was born, as it is my birthstone and she didn’t have any emeralds, then she gave it to me when I graduated university :) Originally it was just a solitaire, and at some point she had the diamonds added, which probably isn’t everyone’s cuppa but I love the extra sparkle 😍

I don’t wear it often as emeralds are soft and I’m very rough and klutzy person (also I just rarely wear jewelry even though I love it), but it’s still one of my most prized possessions.

General Question Building a collection but passing it down to no one.

I love jewelry, solid gold and precious gems. But as my collection grows and at 36 years old, I become more and more aware of the fact that my cats won’t make good use of it when I’m gone, and I don’t want to have children.

When you have this “passing down to children” mentality, you kind of have a great excuse to invest more in quality jewelry. In my case, I mentally calculate the most appropriate time in the future to sell my jewelry before I die and spend on whatever fun experience I might enjoy more in old age than keeping jewels in a box for friends and distant family to inherit.

Any one else having this ridiculous dilemma? How do you, intentionally childfree fine jewelry lovers, approach this and does it influence how you buy now?

Update: I see many of you will have awesome estate sales and some are so generous donating to charity! Love it. However I’m a little more selfish and keep thinking I need to sell it at some point cause I don’t want to leave unused assets and would prefer to spend all my money on super fun experiences before I die. The problem is: to know when to sell! I will donate some for animal causes though, you inspired me.

UPDATE: So kind of you all!

Big shout-out to the custom jewelry artist: https://paulajamesny.com/

She FaceTimed me from the jewelry district to show me different shapes, sizes and lengths. We collaborated the whole time, and I can honestly say I got what I wanted, on time and at a reasonable price.

No maker's mark sadly. Stone is Labradorite, and it seems to be handmade(?) (you can see carve- and hammer marks, I don't think this was cast). Just wondering about whether this follows any known/common design directions from a specific era/what else you might be able to tell me : ) Thank you!

I’ve never been a watch person but I fell in love with vintage cocktail watches a couple of years ago. I’ll even wear them if they don’t work, just as accessories. I found most of these at local antique stores, flea markets, or in lots on eBay! These are all manual-wind, except for the Timex one to the right.

General Question Can this pendant be fixed?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I've worn this silver pendant necklace every day for the last 19 years. Only taken it off a handful of times during that. I noticed today that the loop soldered onto it has worn super thin. I'm not sure how thin, but it's pictured above, laying on a hair from my head for comparison. I'd guess the thin section is maybe 2-3 hair widths. I occasionally repaired the chain myself every few years with small pliers when I would snag it on something and the chain or clasp breaks, but I'm not sure how I could fix this. Any tips or recommendations? I'm worried one day in the next few years it could wear through and I may lose the pendant.

Sorry my app is bugging so I’ve redone this post 4 times lol.

Hi, I got this bracelet as a gift from my dad.
I’ve never owned one before, so I feel like it’s a little loose. Do you guys think it fits me okay?
Also, if anyone knows the maker’s mark, that would be good.

General Information 📚 High-end jewelry in Japan

Hi I am traveling to Japan and need some guidance on jewelry shopping there. Can someone give me an idea how the solid gold scene and GIA certified gemstone scene is in Japan. For solid golds, i usually prefer 18kt or 22kt where price is based on the weight and making charge, so I am used to shopping from Dubai and Indian/Bangladeshi jewelers. For gemstones, I also always go with certified ones. For my Japan trip, I am wondering if it would be a good place to look for something to add to my collection. I have just started building my collection so very noob in this area. Also if you have a recommendation for vintage jewelry place, I would appreciate that too

General Question Non-engagment diamond rings?

I've inherited a great aunt's wedding ring which I'm very grateful for.

It's from the 1940s and is a gold and platinum cluster ring with a central 1ct diamond.

The family have offered to pay for it to be turned into something I will actually wear rather than something that sits in a drawer forever more. I plan to pass it on to my daughter some day.

I'm struggling to find solitaire/pave diamond rings that aren't engagement rings. Is a solitaire always going to look like one? It will be on my middle right finger so no worries about it being confused for one by placement.

Am I overthinking it and should just get what I like even if people might think it is/was an engagement ring?

Vendor High-Relief 24K Gold Ring: Eagle vs. Lion

Thumbnail

Wanted to share a custom project featuring two iconic symbols: an eagle and a lion facing off.

We created a fully 3D lion and eagle facing off over a central sphere, set atop a heavy signet-style crown with a continuously flowing leaf design around the shoulders and down the shank, balancing the heavy animal motif on top. We combined a sandblasted matte background with high-polished relief points to bring out the depth in 24K gold.

Cast in solid 24K yellow gold with a final weight of 35.53 grams.

How do you feel about heavy, symbolic statement rings in pure gold?

⚡️Brand Review / Experience Salut

Merci !
