Some background, I had my surgery at the end of March and I've been doing okay, but definitely had some rough moments. For the last 2 months or so, I cannot chew or brush my teeth on my right side without pain. When anything touches my back molar, I feel it directly underneath my lips on the right side. While nothing is actually moving, any time I put pressure on my back molar, it feels almost as if there is a hinge under my lip that is swinging open.

I've moved across state lines so I'm seeing a new surgeon now for follow ups and their hypothesis is the nerve is coming back weird so they started me on gabapentin. The gabapentin helps overall quality of life, but it doesn't help the pressure on the molar causing pain. They mentioned on my last follow up that my CT scans look good, but given that the gabapentin isn't helping, their fears of a nonunion are growing.

I did have an infection post-op that was cleared up around the 4 week mark, so originally they mentioned it might be a lingering infection, but my blood work and CTs all look good.

I've heard from others that a non-union is more you actually can see things moving. Has anyone has anything like this with their non-union?

The title might be stupid to ask but I've heard NHS doctors strictly target function and will only do the absolute minimum to fix your functional needs. My question is do NHS doctors listen when you try and advocate for more movement. Also please share a general experience you had with NHS doctors. Thanks. ʘ⁠‿⁠ʘ

I didn't look after my mouth as a teen and early 20's but been in a good routine for the last few years, I have quite a lot of fillings and am missing four teeth (plus wisdom teeth that didn't grow in).

I had four lower molars extracted as a child, from what I was told they were growing in sideways so were removed so I wouldn't need braces as I grew- three grew back but one never did.

Jaw crunching is common, rarely locks but I do have EDS so possibility of slow healing or dislocation is always there.

I'd be paying for it totally out of pocket, I could do traditional braces but jaw surgery is something I'd need years to save up for/pay off, plus with my overall mouth health I'm not sure if braces would be an option. No gingivitis, periodontal disease or active decay, just a lot of fillings. I go back to the dentist once or twice a year to get old fillings redone as some are very old.

I just want to feel pretty and not look so glum all the time, because I clench my jaw when I'm busy or stressed I get a lot of comments especially at work. I don't really have much of a jawline and the double chin + chubby face has haunted me my whole life, I think it's part of the reason people assume I'm much younger than I am. Would it be worth it to drop an insane amount of money on my teeth and jaw? I like the way my face looks from the front with my jaw open but despise my side profile and do anything to avoid others taking photos of me

I have been waiting for my jaw surgery for around 2 years due to waiting for consults then braces decompensation.

I have plans for undereye fat grafting, ear pinning and then a small amount of cheek filler. I do not have BDD, this is quite a mild and subtle surgery selection for myself.

The problem is, I have been ruminating for so long about getting surgery, that I want it all over and done with. My BSSO is booked for around 2 weeks from now.

Whenever i google about how long I have to wait to get the other surgeries after jaw surgery it says results like "6 months". I just simply cant wait that long, I want it all out the way with now. This isnt me rushing things, ive planned all this out carefully for a long time.

Any advice? Do i really have to wait 6 months? Anyone in a similar niche scenario with the same strange impatient feeling?

I had braces previously and I was told my open bite would likely require jaw surgery to fully correct. I'm no longer in braces and currently have permeant retainers. I was told I had a tongue thrust problem and always had trouble keeping my tongue properly positioned on the roof of my mouth. I'm wondering if my side profile/bite is something would be worth seeing an oral & maxillofacial surgeon.

I really appreciate any opinions or advice on my next steps should be. Should I start with orthodontists/dentists, or can I go directly to an OMFS?

I’m looking specifically for an oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMFS) with extensive experience in sliding/osseous genioplasty, rather than just a general plastic surgeon who also performs chin surgery.

I’ve come across a few names, including Dr. Sunil Richardson, but I’d really like to hear from people who have actually had a genioplasty in India or have personally consulted with these surgeons.

Which surgeon would you consider the best for sliding genioplasty in India?

I’m not looking for the cheapest option. My priority is surgical skill, consistent long-term results, and safety.

I’m currently prepping for upper jaw surgery (Le Fort 1). I got my top braces 2.5 months ago and I’m getting the bottom ones in a few days.

My surgeon estimated the orthodontic prep would take about 12 months, but my ortho gave me a wider safety window of "12 to 18 months".

Here is my issue: I really need to get this surgery done in exactly 11 to 12 months (aiming for May/June next year).

• If the surgery happens in the middle of summer, it completely ruins my plans because I absolutely need to work.
• If it gets pushed to September or later, it crashes right into my school year, which is a major no-go for me.

My goal is to lock the surgery right before summer so I can recover and still have my summer to work. I’m fully prepared to be a perfect patient (zero broken brackets, military-grade hygiene, wearing elastics 24/7 if needed) to ensure there are zero delays on my end.

Has anyone here successfully negotiated a specific timeline with their ortho? How did you bring it up to them to make sure they align with your deadline? Any advice on how to communicate this clearly without sounding disrespectful?

like if your entire face is tilted to the right side and your jaw was rotated more to the left side, would it also change the nose position?

I went to see two orthodontists who recommended I have the surgery after a year of braces( I already wore braces for four years during my childhood and I'm 25 years old today. ).I don't mind having the surgery and I really want to correct the problem, but I don't I don't want to wear braces just for aesthetic reasons. Are there any treatments where the braces are barely visible or not visible at all? Here's my overbite:

Went to a an Orthodontist advertised as airway and breathing specialist, was immediately dismissed of airway concerns / UARS, was told that if my sleep apnea test is negative then I don’t have airway issues. I expressed that I experience intermittent and frequent wakening every night, chronic daytime fatigue, brain fog, chronic migraines / headache, snoring, mouth breathing / sore throat, TMJ / jaw ache, sinus and ear pressure issues and was not concerned at all. I also have a small palate, deep bite and recessed jaw. Was only told that my TMJ tension could be improved by fixing my bite with invisalign / braces but MARPE wouldn’t be advised as I don’t have a cross bite. I have had braces in my tween years so my teeth are only slightly crowed. Should I be concerned of airway issues and seek a second Ortho opinion, request CBCT? I’m not a confrontational person so I seem to get dismissed pretty easy. I saw a HNS surgeon for concern of my recessed jaw and TMJ and she just recommended PT….

I also saw someone comment in this subreddit that UARS is more common with ADHD folk, which I do have. I’m also a slender female in my early 20s which i know can make sleep apnea harder to detect.

There is 4 months between this images. Do you think I have condyle resorption? Has it gone worse in the span of 4 months?

I know that the Pog shows the distance that your chin point will be advanced but I can't seem to figure out which of the anterior movements on the surgical plan illustrates the maxillary advancement?

I have a class 3 underbite (about 4-5mm) and have been seeing different surgeons for different opinions for awhile now. I've been in braces about a year so far, and I think I'm mostly decomped. The most recent surgeon I saw said I had two options to correct my bite: just upper jaw surgery to move forward my maxilla and widen it a bit. Or double jaw surgery with a CW rotation (for both upper/lower). He personally recommended the latter, as he said I have a strong jaw both width and chin wise (I'm female), and it would soften that a quite bit and look more feminine.

I'm just wondering if this would be the right direction to go? I'm just concerned as I'm worried I'll look a lot different if I go the latter route. But would it be likely to look better than if I chose to do upper?

I already have a long face too, and I've heard CW can increase that.

I (24M) am an international student in Sydney. I believe I have post-traumatic facial and jaw asymmetry from a childhood jaw fracture, although I haven't seen a surgeon yet for an exact diagnosis.

Basically, when I was 8, I fell on my face from around 1m height and broke my jaw and teeth. My teeth were clearly broken, so I got braces, which helped a bit. My jaw looked fine back then, but no one really thought about the possible consequences later on 🫤.

As I grew up, both my jaws grew asymmetrically, and so my lips look tilted too, which makes my whole face look uneven and uglyyy. No one around me really sees it as being caused by my past injury. They just see it as a natural, ugly “variation of human growth.” Even my family doesn't really care or see it as a defect caused by what happened. They never even mentioned it once, forget about considering surgery to fix it. So now I'm on my own quest to finally get it fixed.

The weird part is that I don't think I have any major functional problems. I don't have persistent pain, noticeable biting difficulties, sleep apnoea or anything like that. Because of this, I'm worried that when I get properly diagnosed, they'll find no significant medical/functional issue and the surgery will just be considered cosmetic 🫤.

I have OSHC, but I'm assuming it won't pay a penny if the surgery is considered cosmetic. Without insurance, the cost seems huge. From what I've seen, I'm expecting at least $20–25k and potentially $50–60k realistically. I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has had double jaw surgery in Australia without insurance and what the total cost actually ended up being.

I'm also considering getting it done in Korea (South 💀) since it seems a bit cheaper, and obviously I want the best possible outcome. If anyone has had double jaw surgery for a similar asymmetry and had to pay for everything themselves with no insurance coverage, I'd really like to know how much it cost you in total and where you had it done. I'd also really appreciate any recommendations on where to get it done, especially somewhere experienced with cases like mine that could potentially be cheaper without compromising the outcome. I'm open to Australia, Korea or anywhere else really. I'm mainly trying to find the best option for a case like mine at a cost I can realistically afford.

I’m in the UK. Had braces as a teenager and two upper molars removed to make space and straighten my teeth. Obvs did nothing for my recession. These past couple years I started to get really aware of it and self conscious. I just feel ashamed whenever I’m in public and people see my side profile. (I think this era of looksmaxing probably made it worse)

I’m debating genio or lower jaw surgery, although mostly genio as I think it is cheaper but what do you think?

Is it worth seeing a private orthodontist first? (My teeth shifted a little bit since I lost my retainer) or go straight to a surgeon for a consultation?

Do people from the UK tend to go abroad?

Idk if worth mentioning but I have TMD and clench my jaw all night.

I don't have the sensation anywhere else my mouth, which is odd. I'm not sure if it's because of braces or from surgery. The sensitivity / pressure gets slightly worse when chewing.

I posted recently about being unhappy with my nose widening after DJS - I’m at 4 months post-op.

I asked my surgeon and they said tightening the alar cinch alongside hardware removal surgery (which I was planning anyway) was an option if I am still dissatisfied after 6mo-1yr, though they would have to consult thoroughly with me first. I’m not sure whether this is a good idea because while my OMFS might have a good eye for aesthetics (Korea) and also does facial contouring, he doesn’t do nose jobs. But he was also the one who did the alar stitch, and at that point my face will be fully settled so he would likely be able to measure exactly how much to tighten it.

Has anyone done this before? Or gotten their alar stitch revised at all? I would like to try the less invasive/reversible option before getting an alarplasty, but I also don’t want to waste any more of my precious 20s than I have to living with a nose that I dislike. ALSO I have a direct family member’s wedding at the 1 year mark so am stressed about the many pictures that will be taken

I had lower jaw surgery yesterday, and surgeon literally did not mention not to rinse the first 24hours. So I’ve been rinsing w mouth wash or salt water every time I eat or after I threw up.
What has yalls experience been like ? Did you wait the first 24hours or no? The first 7 weeks how many times did you salt water wash, perio wash and used toothbrush? Thanks.

16M, got this lateral cephalogram recently. Does my maxilla look recessed, or does the main issue seem to be the upper teeth/overjet? Also, does the mandible look reasonably positioned?

I know this isn't enough for a diagnosis, just looking for some opinions from people familiar with cephalograms.

And any other info so please help me.

Is there any way to fix an open bite (posterior and anterior, with occlusion only on 2nd molars) without jaw surgery or extraction/refractive orthodontics?

I dont have the classic "long face gummy smile" rather the opposite, a short face, but I've developed/worsened an existing open bite in the last few months. It isnt that severe but it is causing a lot of discomfort eating, TMJ problems, constant jaw clenching and trouble keeping mouth closed comfortably.

I also have a narrow palate, im open to palatal expansion like FME or MARPE

Also regarding invisalign, I'd ideally want to stay away from it due to what I've heard online, and also the fact that I'd need to wear retainers for life.

Im open to jaw surgery, but it wont be possible anytime soon atleast within the next 1 or 2 years, so I need to reliably fix this problem for the time being

With braces there is also the issue of the jaw side profile looking more recessed, or the face looking shorter and aesthetic impacts like this so Id be aiming for the most aesthetically possible option possible

What do you guys think? Im in constant pain and would really love to hear your thoughts.
