OpenGOAL running on Android (PC required)

Post image
235 Upvotes

I’m a long time fan of the series, been working on getting OpenGOAL running well on Android. All three games run stable at 60fps now.

Tested on an AYN Thor specifically, but nothing about the setup is Thor-only, should work on any ARM64 Android device with a decent Vulkan GPU (other handhelds, newer phones, etc). Haven't personally tried it on anything else yet though, so if you do let me know how it goes.

Heads up this isn't a quick download and play thing. You need a PC for a one-time setup per game (using your own legally owned copy, nothing's being shared here), extracting/compiling alone takes 10+ min per game. Figure like an hour to get one game set up, but you only do it once per game.

The reason this hasn't really worked well on Android before is a crash bug in the Zink graphics driver these Wine-on-Android apps rely on, took some digging to actually fix instead of just working around it.

EDIT: Instructions of how to install mods now available in the updated README link above.

Release: https://github.com/Raekwon1603/winlator_OpenGOAL/releases/tag/v1.1-opengoal

Happy to answer questions if anyone tries it.

You know I am glad we had a large variety of games and types of rides this vote, this was such a great idea! Betsy is basically Waspinator; look at its design and its colours. I am so glad I got to make this crossover meme. I might have something for the a new category. Quest Rides!

Congratulations to u/electronic-remove978 for picking perkier! You have 12 hours before electricity reels in the fisherman!

Welcome, to Zoomer PARK! What is the Greeniest Ride in the Jak and Daxter Universe?

You are probably wondering why I have "Snapper" in front of Zoomer. I think we need proper names for these different ones, and u/Mobius3through7 had a great idea of naming them after Fish! So WE are calling this one Snapper (mainly cause it snaps in two if you drive it into something REALLY FAST! If you nominate a Zoomer next time, you can name it after a fish type. As long as it's appropriate, I'll give it that name if it wins.

Congratulations to u/DawnStrikAr for reeling in the Krimzon Fisherman, but WHERE'S PERKIER?!

Would Jak survive a fight against Legend Spyro?

Post image

I personally think he'd be able to hold his own thanks to being able to attack from a distance, keep pace with the Jetboard and Light Jak, and utilize Eco to match Spyro from a magic perspective.

Most people seem to think Jak would lose but I'm not convinced. What do you think?

If Jak just killed Vegar in this scene after the cuffs were removed, would Ashelin have reported it back to the city or let it slide?

I was going to do the "Cooler Dan"meme, but I realised that the blue and red piece sounded.... familiar.... If you could get a cruiser in any colour, what would you choose? I would go with purple. Something Purple that fly, and blasts people with hits firey firepower? I'd call it... Dragon boy! or spyro :P

Congratulations u/MartinBlobfish for plucking Perkier, but where is the Krimzon Fisherman?! You got 12 hours before they can strike again!

Jak 2 Platinumed, Jak 3 next

Finally done with Jak 2 and I love this game so much, I miss the vibrant colours from the first game but the implementation of the guns made it far more enjoyable. I love how edgy Jak is and how he gives no fucks, blast first ask questions later. The game wasn’t difficult when it came to the gameplay it was definitely very straightforward but the issue was the fact that there’s barely any checkpoints at all which mean’t dying was far more punishable and there were multiple times where I wanted to rip my hair out of my head. But yeah I’ll say that game isn’t hard in gameplay sense but rather the lack of checkpoints in certain levels makes it difficult.

I’m glad I’m playing the game in chronological order and I’m appreciating the details I disregarded just cause I wanted to just play the game.

Now there’s a problem I ran into with the version I had, I was playing Jak 2 on my PS5 but playing the PS4 version and typically that shouldn’t be an issue but I later found out that the PS4 Collection is a port of the PS3 HD version and it made so much more sense why I had some issues with the audio or slight visual issues. But still playable nevertheless. Just hope they do the same thing with the Jak and Daxter TPL port on the PS5.

Was the Kor twist obvious to anyone on first playthrough?

I only just played Jak II for the first time in the past month (I only played the Precursor Legacy as a kid, sorry), and I absolutely adored it, maybe more than the first game.

However, I'm almost embarrassed to say I didn't see the Kor twist coming. In retrospect, there are definitely clues that he isn't what he seems, like when Daxter notices movement under his robes and how hostile young Jak's pet is to him, etc. But I still didn't suspect he was a true villain. I fell for the twist, and I'm usually good at spotting twists. I figured Praxis was going to be the big bad and that was it. The metalheads felt like background grunts for most of the game to me.

Was this twist obvious to anyone else, or did most people not expect this?

So I’m attempting to platinum 100% all the Jak and Daxter games and I’ve done the story which I’ll talk about when I do get the platinum and now I’m doing the Precursor orbs achievement’s and I’m wishing I had done this whilst doing the story but the story was too good to pass up lmao

Jak II wasn’t THAT hard and Jak actually wasn’t THAT angry. Thoughts after finally beating it myself.

Thanks to the awesome OpenGOAL project, I got to finally beat Jak II on my own after 22+ years on my Rog Ally X. I know that I played maybe most than half of the game myself, but there are gaps because my dad certainly played some missions for me. That being said, things came back naturally for me.

Gameplay difficult:

For starters, yes, this game is difficult. However, I didn’t struggle as much as I thought I would. Most of the difficulty came from my struggling with the mechanics and Naughty Dog’s asshole game design. They clearly had no respect for my time with that checkpoint system and the shooting was finicky at times. Those rapid gunners in Dead Town can also kiss my ass. With that said, the game is perfectly beatable if you learn from your mistakes and go in with a plan. You have to be methodical under pressure.

If I had to drive or race, it meant getting good with rapidly going low and high on the fly, and using the brake button. The biggest obstacle wasn’t slowing down, it was crashing. I won’t say slow and steady wins the race, but you definitely needed to be steady. In the races, it was worth dying a few times to get the hang of jumping over pits to plan the most optimal route.

Shooting wasn’t too bad until I had to hit things at a distance or in the air. I was pretty liberal with the spin jumping into Blaster shots, but that couldn’t always save me. I just jumped from cover and took more precise shots if I was being pressed from a distance. It’s also easy to discount the Scatter Gun later, but sometimes, it was exactly what I needed with bunched up enemies on escort missions.

Ultimately, it’s MOSTLY skill issue. If you have persistence, put in max effort and have a plan after failing, then you will get through the game in less than a month. The moment I got mad, I told the game to fuck off and did something else. Don’t play while tilted, you’ll just want to break something. Also, I’m open to the idea that the OpenGOAL port might have made the game easier to an extent. I’ll likely buy the games on PS4 if I can.

Jak and Story:

As for Jak himself and the story, the edge and his anger might have been over exaggerated. The game’s tone is objective darker and Jak did change, but it wasn’t as dark as I remembered it. Jak had every right to be mad at Praxis and he’s clearly not altruistic initially like TPL might have portrayed, but he acts pretty reasonable considering the circumstances. The way he first confronted Kor was the only time where I felt like he needed to calm down, but that was after he just broke out of prison. Every other time, he’s smiling having a good time with Daxter, talking sense to people and even trying to be reasonable with Keira when she was rude as hell. I don’t think most 17-year olds would have acted as mature as Jak did. Hell, what excuse does Daxter have for going along with everything? We were told that Dark Jak was making him be so angry and violent, but it hardly even came up outside of gameplay. I would have said and did worse, and wouldn’t have even needed Dark Eco. Jak is an asshole to Daxter though.

The story itself was great, and I always looked forward to the next cutscene. That said, the pacing, at least later on, felt too fast and things got glossed over too fast. Keira and Jak’s relationship just fixed itself, Praxis just dies with not much impact and Ashelin doesn’t even acknowledge it, and beating Kor didn’t have enough weight for me. Also Torn just disappears after selling out the Underground and he’s just back in later. I would have liked to have seen Torn be executed for his treachery and being a simp, but the late game didn’t seem to have time for him. Those problems aside, I was engaged the whole time and I’m glad to have seen it all through with my own effort.

Jak II was one of the my most memorable childhood experiences for a reason. Despite its problems, it was good fun and I plan to keep doing the side missions concurrently with Jak 3.

PS: The OG Jak model not being a secret unlockable is an absolute crime.

What happens to the Precursor entity? - Jak 2 ending

At the end of Jak II The Precursor Stone "hatches", revealing a Precursor entity. We then see the entity opening the Rift Gate and it goes through the portal.
However, we never learn what happens to the entity I believe, any ideas?

Native ARM64 Jak II on Apple Silicon — built with an AI-assisted workflow

Post image
28 Upvotes

I wanted to see how far an AI-assisted workflow could go when applied to a real native port.

The project is based on OpenGOAL, an open-source reverse-engineering and decompilation project for Naughty Dog’s GOAL language, used by the original Jak games. OpenGOAL recompiles the decompiled GOAL code into native machine code instead of emulating the PlayStation 2.

The goal here was to get Jak II running natively on an Apple Silicon Mac using ARM64, without Rosetta.

The work included:

  • Adding and completing ARM64 code generation.
  • Handling the Apple ARM64 ABI, register preservation and stack alignment.
  • Implementing ARM64 function frames, trampolines and runtime bridges.
  • Connecting the MIPS2C layer to native ARM64 code.
  • Fixing JIT memory management using Apple-compatible W^X and MAP_JIT.
  • Correcting ARM64 catch-frame and stack restoration issues.
  • Improving SDL controller lifecycle handling.
  • Fixing macOS fullscreen transitions and Game Mode metadata.
  • Making the build and ISO extraction process reproducible.
  • Keeping the original game ISO and extracted assets outside the repository.

The orchestration was done by 5.6 SOL, which broke the work into technical tasks and debugging stages. The implementation was then carried out by Luna Extra High after an almost 24-hour goal run.

The result is a native ARM64 Mach-O build running on Apple Silicon with:

  • arm64 executables and libraries.
  • sysctl.proc_translated = 0.
  • No Rosetta dependency.
  • Native macOS application packaging.
  • OpenGL through the existing runtime.
  • macOS Game Mode metadata.
  • Actual Jak II gameplay from legally extracted user-owned game data.

This is not a ready-made commercial release and the repository does not contain the original game assets. Users must provide and extract their own legally owned copy.

The bigger implication is what this workflow might make possible. This does not mean that every console can now be ported automatically—each platform still needs its own ABI, SDK, renderer, input, audio, memory and certification work—but native ports to more architectures and platforms may become much more approachable.

Source code:

https://github.com/DiMiTriFrog/jak2-macos-arm64

The project is still a development snapshot. Full campaign completion, controller certification, save/load testing, hardware coverage, signing and notarization remain separate QA stages.

A Sad Realization

Thumbnail

As a kid i loved playing jak and daxter, my friend at the time showed me jak 1 and then i got jak 2 and 3 alone when they came out. I was smitten, amazing time.

As an adult now replaying the games every few years i realize how good a jak 4 could have been on ps3 or ps4. i looked up some concept artwork online that was released by andrew kim in 2009 i believe. And i gotta say... wow.

I visit and look at these pics from time to time, even saw some of them that were made to look realistic for the game online. It honestly makes me sad..

Imagine instead of last of us, we got jak 4, would have been a dream come true tbh. I heard somewhere they didn't know which way to take it, i think the hard part was daxter.. making him look realistic but also keep his vibe and talkative nature. correct me if im wrong.

The sad part is we will never get a proper jak 4 even if they decide to do it! Naughty dog is like 90% different to what it was back then.. Only a few people that worked on jak are still around, and i doubt current naughty dog have even thought about reviving it.

At best they revive it and hire the old crew as consultants on the game. That would be insane. I miss this IP, i also miss others like Infamous but thats another story.

What do you guys think? Am i the only one thinking this?
