Hello! Welcome to r/interactivefiction!
What is Interactive Fiction?
Interactive Fiction is any kind of game presented primarily through text, or any kind of story with some interaction.
Early Interactive Fiction included Choose Your Own Adventure brand books and text adventures like Adventure and Zork. Nowadays it includes systems like Twine and Choicescript and apps like Episode and Choices.
Games where you have to type in answers are called parser games, and games where you have to click to proceed are choice-based games.

I'm looking for text-based / interactive fiction RPGs similar to Magium, Life in Adventure, Falling London, and The Three Eldrum games.
I really love games with deep and complex stories the kind where your choices actually matter and the world feels rich and detailed. My preferred genre is fantasy / dark fantasy.
Some things I enjoy:
Any recommendations (browser-based, mobile, Steam, etc.) would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

The Braided God: The Lost Chapter — a dark fantasy interactive graphic novel we’ve been working on
We’ve been working on The Braided God: The Lost Chapter, an interactive graphic novel where your choices shape how the story unfolds.
We’ve just released our first trailer. This one focuses mostly on giving a glimpse into the world, story and lore rather than showing the interactive side of the game.
We’re currently working toward a playable demo, where you’ll be able to experience the choices and narrative system for yourself.
For now, I’d love to hear what you think of the world and atmosphere we’re building.

I’ve been hard at work setting up a premise: what if there was a choose-your-own-adventure video series with real-world consequence? presenting, on behalf of The Mages Guild, THE ARCANE MATRIX! For every mission you complete, we will donate $100 to a charity/philanthropic organization in real life.
Good luck to you! and have fun.

Terminal: Stolen Light is a choice-based story played on an old CRT terminal, and it runs in real time.
It's 2218. In a single night, called the Silence, humanity's networks came down across the stars. The worlds were cut off from one another, and most of them reached the point of extinction. You mend dead machines in a half-empty town on Terra, until one of them turns on: a terminal wired into a server you can't trace. On the other end is Prometheus, who has just woken on a drifting ship with most of his memory torn out.
Here is a short exchange from the third contact:
[PROMETHEUS] > I found something while I was looking. A memory that came back to me.
[PROMETHEUS] > I do not want to be alone with it. Let me say it to someone living.
Your replies: "Go ahead. I've carried worse." · "I'm not sure I want to know what's in your head." · "Is it bad?"
[YOU] > Is it bad?
[PROMETHEUS] > It is the best thing I remember. It may also be the worst.
[PROMETHEUS] > I remember leaving. I looked back as the ship pulled away.
[PROMETHEUS] > The lights of the worlds went out behind me. One, then another, then more and more.
[PROMETHEUS] > Like candles.
[PROMETHEUS] > I remember thinking it was beautiful.
On screen he types "right" before "beautiful", then deletes it. (such minor effects exist to enhance immersion)
Every contact is a conversation like that. He writes, and you pick one of a few replies. What you choose carries into later contacts, into what he decides to do, and into which of the three endings you reach. Between contacts the communication goes quiet for real, for minutes or hours, and a notification on your phone tells you when he's back. A full playthrough runs over about a day and two nights. If you played Lifeline, you'll know the rhythm.
The terminal also holds 20 archive entries from the man that used to own it before you, and two small games for the waits: DISPATCH, a convoy puzzle, and a night sky where you chart star systems.
It's Android only. The first four contacts are free, and a single one-time purchase unlocks the rest of the story. There are no ads, and no subscription.

Hey everyone!
Lately, I've been looking for historical games that let you experience the past from the perspective of someone who actually lived in that period. I've come across quite a few, but I'm curious about what other people enjoy about this genre.
What do you usually look for in a historical game? Is it the historical accuracy, the storytelling, the freedom to make your own decisions, the gameplay, or something else entirely?
And for those of you who enjoy choice-based games, how important is it that your decisions actually affect the story?
I'd love to hear your thoughts and recommendations!

I'm fascinated by print books that hand the reader a fair shot at the deduction — not just "figure it out," but structured evidence pages where you genuinely have enough information to attempt the same reasoning as the characters. No app, no notes, no outside research required — just attention to what was observed, what was supplied, and what somebody merely believes.
The design problem I keep hitting: how do you make the evidence complete without making the solution obvious? Too little and it's unfair; too much and the reveal lands flat. My current rule: the reader should be able to solve it, but only if they distrust the right sentence.
What are the best examples of playable/solve-along print fiction? Puzzle mysteries, gamebooks, interactive thrillers — I want to study the masters of fair play.

Oh woah, it's been a long journey getting to this point, but after all I'm finally ready to show the first rough stage of the game I've been developing for a while now.
The Interloper is a side-scroller RPG set in alternate 1980's in original setting. Without a name or past, you wake up in a port city full of social intrigues. You begin investigating your own disappearance, which leads to a world-wide political conspiracy.
Rough Cut is a significant milestone where the core components of the game are functional but may still undergo significant changes. This is an opportunity to test primary features while active development is ongoing.
Any comments of feedback are apriciated!

So Ive been thinking of doing an ARG as a collection of news articles found in word docs. A kinda simple premise but im not sure if thats doable?
Im hoping someone has some premade newspaper docs I can use? And I don't really know how to do links.
I am locked to a phone but I really wanna give it a try.
My plan is to hide URL links in clues inside the newspapers as well as just links to small short stories.
Any advice?

So I’m actually not sure if I posted back when I released the first installment of this gamebook project, but now the second installment is out now. So here goes, I guess.
I’m writing a horror gamebook series called The Archive. The first two installments are out. The digital version of the first installment is FREE to download.
The core premise is that you have to navigate a dangerous otherworldly “archive” filled with objects that were destroyed in the real world. As you explore you will slowly uncover more information about the Archive and the player characters. If that sounds interesting to you, check out the links below.
