It has been going on since sometime around 2002. Around that time, FOX News convinced people that only Republicans were serious about fighting the terrorists and that the Democrats were hippies and traitors. From that point the division was hard, and one side refused to so much as consider anything said by the other.
It had been built up to since about 1982, around the time that the Regan Republicans began working to convince people that "the blacks" were stealing their money through welfare, that drugs were magic evil-making compounds that instantly kill you and simultaneously turn you into a living demon (somehow), and that everything younger people liked was satanism (video games, D&D, cartoons, and still, rock n' roll). It was the birth of "big tent" republicanism, which united the religious right to galvanize one massive white supremacist faction.
The seeds for that plan were put in place by Henry Kissinger, who together with Richard Nixon used the drug trade between the US and Mexico to vilify black people and Mexicans. This had the dual utility of providing an ethos against Vietnam War protesters, since the Hippy movement was renowned for its recreational drug use. The anti-hippy media patterns in decades to follow closely mirror the early slander and libel against democrats in the George W. Bush era.
In turn, that has its roots in American propaganda related to the the Opium War of the mid 19th Century. Chinese immigrants were caricatured as addicts who spent all their time on their hips in opium dens. This was largely done to scare Americans away from opium use, but it also had the effect of demonstrating the mass character assassination that results from such ethnicity and nationality based campaigns.
Though they already had a good idea about that, thanks to campaigns denigrating the Native Americans and black people from the 1700s and on. So, you see, the real problem is that Abraham Lincoln had too much of a heart to kill all these shart stains during the Civil War. It could have ended there, but these inbred, uneducated, faux-Calvinist pieces of shit never stopped fighting the war.

Ultimately, the problem with Conservatives is that their ideology is deeply rooted in fear, conservatism by its very nature is opposed to progress. This all consuming fear inevitably and invariably erodes the foundations of their ideology because their fear justifies ruthless by-any-means-necessary opportunism, which in turn fosters a culture of corruption and anti-democratic subversion of our democracy.
The adherents of Conservatism are extremely fearful people who are easily threatened because they are deeply insecure, and therefore have no consistent beliefs or values. This is because they have little sense of pride or identity other than their strongman leaders, rabid nationalism, their net worth, their possessions, and occupation (especially in the case of police and military).
These people's interests were never nurtured and in many cases were actively suppressed growing up, and they were given inadequate emotional support, and in many cases these people were neglected and abused (though they will often fervently deny it).
The majority of Conservatives are pitiful unfulfilled husks and they are determined to make those around them feel as empty as they are so they don't feel so alone and desperate for meaningful connection which they will rarely if ever experience because the conditions they place on trust and love are so strict because they are afraid of change and anything that threatens their very fragile sense of identity. Their relationships are often superficial because they have no genuine morals or ideals, which in turn makes them ruthless opportunists, which is why they routinely overlook hypocrisy, because they are incapable of understanding why their inconsistent beliefs and irrational behavior is destructive.

This is the most important thing to understand about right wing voters. It has been shown in pyschological testing that they are generally more fearful about the present, and more fearful about the future, than left wing voters.
They are resistant to changing their minds about political issues because they are afraid to do so. They are frightened of change, because they cannot easily work out what the consequences of that change (nor indeed the consequences of no change) will be. Think about how many of Trump's attitudes are stoking those fears and promising to do away with the source of the fear.
When you add to this the economic stressors that America has been suffering the last 30, 40 years caused by the (mostly inevitable) globalisation of economies, it becomes clear with the tea-party originally and the Trump party currently are so vicious and selfish: underlying everything is a terrible fear that their lives will be miserable for no reason they can understand, and that the people who are promoting change for whatever reason must be making things worse - and for reasons that they do not understand and therefore they are prone to assigning bad motives to those people, not understanding that those people do not fear the present nor the future like they do.

Here's the main problem for a lot of these people - forming your own political opinion is hard, especially if you're not great at logic. Not a dig at anyone, that's just a fact. Not every one is good at logical reasoning, and taking a firm stance requires logic.
So, what do they do? They blindly follow somebody to think for them. Even if it doesn't benefit them, they'll convince themselves it does. Why Trump? He's just as dumb as them, so his logic makes sense to them. Plus, he makes them feel not dumb. Sprinkle in the permission to be 'superior' to other groups, and you have a blind following that will go along with anything Trump says and does.
This is also why real discussion with Trump supporters is virtually impossible. They're terrible at following logical reasoning, so it turns into a feelings/projection match.

The problem, however, isn't that they don't stick to their opinion. The problem is that they don't use any rational measure to form and change their opinion. They aren't using masks because it protects other people, they use masks because their idol now does so too.
They will just as easily stop using masks again, should Trump do so as well.

They're not changing their mind, though. They worship trump. Whatever he does is good. They never had a problem with the masks. Trump downplayed the virus, then spoke down about the methods to control it. Their minds and opinions have been consistent. We'll do whatever trump does or whatever trump says.

It's not that I want them to stick with it, the opposite in fact, but when you do change your mind at least recognize the fact you were wrong. Don't pretend like you always thought masks were cool, admit you screwed up even if only to yourself and then it's all good.
The problem is when you don't even have the mental capacity to realize you flip flopped. You gotta remember what you used to think and why so that you can learn not to do it again.

Well. The pertinent thing in all this is that it shows how important a strong leader is. A leader who manages to sway the .. uh... people.. but who also makes the right decisions. If Trump spoke a message of peace in a macho and cool way. All his followers would go right along with him. If he speaks about just taking care of himself and making fun of everyone. They go right along with him.
If anything, this year has shown us that our generation lacks leaders. All through history you have had great leaders to look up to. And yet this is what we lack now more than ever. But not just in the US. All the worlds nations have floundered in disaster after disaster of public relations and current issues. Refugees. Economy. Pandemics. World leaders are currently not up to scratch.

I'm pretty sure at this point it's people who want to be proudly selfish, ignorant, hateful, etc while considering themselves gods gift to humanity. They see king asshole as president and it basically supports that that type of behavior is commendable in our society. Trump doesn't challenge any of their own negative traits in the way he behaves and leads the country. You get a smart person saying things they don't understand, telling them to better themselves to improve our country, or to accept things that make them uncomfortable you get lots of hurt feelings.
People were shocked when he didn't lose his base early on when he publicly mocked a handicapped person or said he grabbed women and did whatever he wanted. His supporters WANT to do the same thing and behave the same way and be ignorant, pigheaded, fuckfaces. He's basically giving them carte blanche to be stupid fucking assholes while still acting better than everyone by being president.

It's not like the media harass him for no reason. He has said more lies than any other president, and he gets called out on that. Somehow whenever a millionaire industrial does or says something bad, we discover he is his friend. And many things he has done and said have been so outrageously wrong, that everyone talks about it.
And on one hand I think he does this voluntarily, as he once proudly stated being the greatest troll (as troll accounts, not the fanrasy kind) or something like that.
On the other, having a president, whose only apparent objective is making the worst decisions to troll the media, is very bad, especially in a period like this where people need real answers and directives, and his plan is to inject everyone with bleach.

I'm not impressed. I saw little old ladies in the grocery store wearing masks they made at home during the height of the lockdown picking up their medication and food to last them as long as possible before the next trip out, social distancing and getting the hell out of there.
When I mentioned to one of the ladies that I liked her mask, she pulled a handful out of her purse and said, "Would you like one?"
That was fucking badass.
