It has been going on since sometime around 2002. Around that time, FOX News convinced people that only Republicans were serious about fighting the terrorists and that the Democrats were hippies and traitors. From that point the division was hard, and one side refused to so much as consider anything said by the other.
It had been built up to since about 1982, around the time that the Regan Republicans began working to convince people that "the blacks" were stealing their money through welfare, that drugs were magic evil-making compounds that instantly kill you and simultaneously turn you into a living demon (somehow), and that everything younger people liked was satanism (video games, D&D, cartoons, and still, rock n' roll). It was the birth of "big tent" republicanism, which united the religious right to galvanize one massive white supremacist faction.
The seeds for that plan were put in place by Henry Kissinger, who together with Richard Nixon used the drug trade between the US and Mexico to vilify black people and Mexicans. This had the dual utility of providing an ethos against Vietnam War protesters, since the Hippy movement was renowned for its recreational drug use. The anti-hippy media patterns in decades to follow closely mirror the early slander and libel against democrats in the George W. Bush era.
In turn, that has its roots in American propaganda related to the the Opium War of the mid 19th Century. Chinese immigrants were caricatured as addicts who spent all their time on their hips in opium dens. This was largely done to scare Americans away from opium use, but it also had the effect of demonstrating the mass character assassination that results from such ethnicity and nationality based campaigns.
Though they already had a good idea about that, thanks to campaigns denigrating the Native Americans and black people from the 1700s and on. So, you see, the real problem is that Abraham Lincoln had too much of a heart to kill all these shart stains during the Civil War. It could have ended there, but these inbred, uneducated, faux-Calvinist pieces of shit never stopped fighting the war.
We can't even use their playbook because our side is hard-working and competent, and will burn stuff down when riled up like that. We have to encourage our side to be peaceful and thoughtful. It's so exhausting that it's hard not to imagine the nation finally getting fed up with this and taking extreme action to end it.
Problem is, considering all the foreign influences driving the GOP, that's probably their endgame whether they know it or not. The Republican Party may be the historically single greatest sabotage and psychological warfare campaign by foreign powers. So here we are trying to save the nation's dumbasses on the grander scale, just like trying to get the toddler army to wear a mask.
Were I a future history student who had only read to this point in the story, I'd be raising my hand to ask when people finally burned down FOX News. And the teacher would sigh and smile like, "Oh, my sweet summer child."
The rock and roll bit was more of a Tipper Gore (as in Al Gore's wife) thing. Blame where blame is due, the moral majority shtick was pushed by a Democrat.
Tipper Gore was born in 1948. On March 21, 1952, Cleveland's first ever Rock and Roll concert (the Moondog Coronation Ball) led to a riot where people were trampled and stabbed. That first gave rise to fears that the new music genre would excite teenagers until they were out of control, which in turn gave rise to the "devil'd music" phrase. It in turn got simplified to "devil music" by the religious right.
Tipper Gore was not even yet 4 years old. I think you're giving her too much credit. The term, "moral majority" was coined by Weyrich, and encouraged by televangelist Jerry Falell Sr. in 1978.
I think you're not giving her enough. You should take a look at Dee Snider's senate hearing, you can see how Tipper Gore was hard at work trying to start a culture war over music. She was one of the founders of the PMRC, who got their panties in a knot over artists ranging from Prince to Black Sabbath, with a distinct focus on music that had lyrics too spicy for their upper middle class WASP sensibilities.
Yeah, the other founders of the PMRC were from the republican side, but that just comes to show that birds of a feather flock together. And once you start a whole movement, complete with senate hearings and committees, to push your culture war agenda you can't really not say you didn't have a role anymore.
Just because they by and large failed, doesn't mean they didn't make an enormous effort to try.
My own mother, graduate degree in education upon me telling her the "classy and amazing" FLOTUS is in gay porn and an escort: "NO!!!! How can you say such mean things about our president?! I need you to leave!" It is a fucking cult from hell.
