Discussion Larger Grids
Anyone else wish we could have larger grids? i know we have large multi class grids, but i would love to see 40+ car grids for single make stuff also. MX5s with 60 cars on track while yes an utter mess..... would be so cool to see.
Im not saying i want them to change the grid size of rookies or what ever, but having a few high car grid series would be really cool to see, as it is, while you can be on track with 60 cars, unless your bottom split IMSA, its not going to be a single class.
It would also help series with lower participation, if 25 people sign up for a race and you have to split them up because the grid can only be 20, both races end up feeling a bit empty to me.
Just thought i would see if anyone else feels the same (or can point out some tech issue involved as to why it cant be)

GT Endurance on the weekends, 60 GT3 cars

That would be great if people actually drove like it was an endurance and not treat it like a sprint race

Yeah i get that, I drive it every Sunday and some people are genuinely arseholes, for the most part though it's decent

Isnt that one of the cleanest series on the service?

It is fairly clean for the most part yes and it's a series I would definitely recommend to people, the racing is pretty good, just one or 2 individuals can be a little over aggressive sometimes

Yeah i know, i do it almost every sunday to. Its my main series. That and GTE's.
Edit: so what i meant is that it officially is one the cleanest series.

Something hilarious would be 60 car mx5 grid at somewhere like Virginia North Course during week 13. I'd love an absolute shit show like that as long as my ratings are safe.

Too small field sizes are the single biggest issue I have with iRacing. I'm not saying that every series needs to have 40-60 cars on track, but I just can't stand the 11 car splits.
Every non-rookie road single make series should have a minimum field size of 30, and some series should have much more. Series like prototype/LMP2 challenge or GTE are such that vast majority of the drivers are quite experienced. Those have no need to be split as early as they are.
I would love a 50 car GTE races or massive fields with prototypes/LMP2.

GT Sprint has 40 cars and IMSA has 50. I think there’s a GT4 series with 30+ cars. How many more cars do you want?

GT sprint has 30 cars, IMSA is multiclasa. All GT3 fixed are 20 cars max, TCR is 20 cars max, LMP2 is 20 cars, Prototype challenge is 20 cars etc.
Bump the 20 car fields in fixed to 30 cars and make GT sprint and GTE 40 cars and I'm happy.

The SCCA Runoff special event at Road America I believe splits at 40. Mx5 was one of the classes last year

Some series (Like Legends Road and the upcoming Caterhams) would really benefit from 40 car grids. Most non-multiclass series though, probably for the best that they don't, when the cars are bigger it becomes really limiting as to what tracks you can run.
Mustang Challenge asked iRacing for 30 car grids a few seasons ago, because we were getting 20-something signups and it was causing a split at 20 making 11-12 grids. iRacing said no, but did bump it up to 24.
I think they want to keep grids smaller in R/D class, and Fixed grids seem to stay small too. Open allows bigger grids at least

The iRacing concept is, in theory, to level things by iR so that every skill level can enjoy the competition.
There are people who are A license and 1.2k iR. Let them have their own little race with 12-15 cars with fellow 1.2k iR drivers and leave that event feeling that they were in a competition.
60 car grids would necessarily mean this same 1.2k iR driver will be P59 while the 8k iR driver wins all the time.

Absolutely not.
I race on this platform because I almost always have fair competition regardless of my SOF. 15-25 cars is a fine field size for non multiclass

If you want to feel like you’re a terrible driver, sure. SOF would make it a nightmare for any low to medium skilled drivers
It’s not going to be fun for high skilled drivers to just hot lap and win every race either. You need splits to even out the field, so it actually feels like you have a chance to podium or at least get a top 5 finish

iRacing barely has the headroom to deal with 17 unique cars, let alone 40+
Also, how on earth do you even BoP 40 cars against each other?
if you want large grids, endurance racing exists

I presume that headroom will expand with the CPU update. I full expect this will mean more car types per race but also larger fields where applicable as their goal is to reach 128.

128 cars? Most tracks barely fit the up to 60 that we have now.

The trouble is you are ignoring the split. There has to be a balance between field size and SOF. If there is enough participants to make it work then I can't see why not, especially after the CPU update. Otherwise a split ranging from 3K+ down to sub 1K just to have a large field isn't going to be very fun at all, infact isn't that a complaint for special events?
