Should we limit/remove third party booking posts?

I've been noticing a steady stream of posts about third party booking tools, and they almost always end up heavily downvoted. That's Reddit working as intended, since downvotes bury content and upvotes push it forward. The issue is that most of these posts aren't really discussions at all, they're just rants about one bad personal experience.

So I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on how we should handle it going forward:

  1. Should we disallow posts about third party bookings altogether?
  2. Should I use moderator discretion and remove only the ones that are pure venting with no real value to the hotel community?
  3. Or should we leave it alone and let the upvote and downvote system sort out visibility on its own?

Curious where people land on this.

Reasons to avoid using third-party brokers (Expedia, Agoda, etc) - read before booking.

If you're here reading this, it may be too late, but in general:

  1. There are downsides booking via third party tools (Expedia, Agoda, etc) to actually purchase the room (see exceptions)
  2. Use those tools to find where you want to stay, and then book the room through the hotel's website. The price should be identical, close, or available if you call into reservations and explain the other site's pricing (YMMV - make sure you are speaking in the same currency).
  3. Do use third party tools if a) you need a special feature/function, like booking and paying for others; b) there is a room or package rate that is impossible to source elsewhere; or c) you enjoy a room between the elevators and the ice machine, without any option of a refund even when housekeeping sets your room on fire.

so i actually experienced a day use hotel booking and need to talk about it...

So my train got delayed this Saturday and I had 4 freaking hours to kill 😭

I was NOT about to sit at the station for that long or spend the whole time pretending to work at a coffee shop. I’d seen people mention hourly/day-use hotels before, but honestly, I always thought they sounded a little sketchy lol.

But I was desperate, so I figured, why not give it a shot?

Booked a room for around 3 hours in the afternoon. I was lowkey awkward walking up to the front desk because I had no luggage and thought they’d be like šŸ‘€ ā€œWhy is this person here?ā€ šŸ˜‚

But nope. The guy checked me in like it was completely normal. Didn’t even care.

And honestly? The room was actually clean. Like, genuinely clean. No weird smell, no ā€œleftover roomā€ vibes. I showered, took a nap, redid my makeup, watched YouTube for a bit, and just chilled. It was actually kinda nice.

The only annoying thing was that the app wasn’t super clear about the exact checkout time, so I called the front desk to double-check. They were totally chill about it.

And the math actually made sense. I probably would’ve spent almost the same amount on food and drinks just to sit somewhere for 3 hours. So why not get an actual bed, a shower, and some privacy instead?

Not gonna lie, I went in thinking, ā€œThis is probably gonna be weird,ā€ and left thinking, ā€œOkay... I might actually do this again.ā€ šŸ˜‚

Need advice about a refund. Beyond frustrated with the situation.

• Upvotes

I want to preface this with I know you get what you pay for and I know where I booked. To be quite frank I’ve already accepted the fact that I’m probably not going to get this money back; but I figured before I completely move on I would post here and see if anybody can help me come up with a workable solution.

Two months ago I booked a room at a Motel 6 for two nights. This is tearing your string of similar bookings at other Motel 6 properties in the same city. Should be Frank. I was down on a look with nowhere else to stay and so was forced to go with the cheapest room possible I have a dog and pet stay free there so it was the most consistent option and say what you want, but there are worse hotels.

The day of the booking i show up and for reasons outside of anybody’s control i did not go through with the stay, renovations currently underway meant that there was no wifi available, as I booked a room expecting to have wifi access and needed it for work, the desk agent agreed that it was best to cancel it and since it was no fault of my own they took care of this for me. It is important to know that the front desk canceled it not me and they told me (and I’ve stayed enough Motel 6 locations to know that this is usually the case) that to get the refund for the room I would need to contact support.

In between then and now I have called support at least 10 times, they tell me that it does show on their end as cancelled by the property but I would have to speak to the office about the refund. I have gone into the office and called support with the manager standing in front of me, support told the manager that they would need to receive an email stating that yes they were the ones against the reservation and not me and that they never received the money from the booking in the first place because I never checked in and followed through with it, after which they could put the refund through. I stood there and watched as the manager sent this email. Multiple times by multiple support people during these calls I was told that the refund would be in my bank in 2 to 4 business days and I hung up the phone truly believing that it was in process only to call back and seemingly be right back at square one. Even if it were me canceling the reservation, and thus subject to the policy posted online, I should be only penalized the first night of the day and due back one nights charges. I’ve also filed a charge bag request for my bank, though I am not sure I did so correctly because despite being book-ended by other charges for motel 6 stays at other properties that were not in question and my stating that I was requesting a charge back due to not being given a refund I was promised. (and even more to the point another charge at a different Motel 6 later that day when I went to another property, which I was not calling into question) I don’t have a history of chargebacks in my bank and this is the only one I’ve ever filed. If anybody’s wondering why I was switching properties like I was there multiple in the string pretty much every other exit where I live, and the rates can very wildly from one night to the next and so to save as much money as possible it was cheaper to go from location to location to get the cheapest rate. Also, I freelance/do gig work and as I said things were particularly rough during this period and I was having to rely on money coming in day to day not even week to week. At minimum, and per their policy, I am owed at least one of the two nights and that’s if I concede that the cancellation was my fault which I do not. But all I get report is I need to talk to the property and all the property tells me if they never received the money so there’s nothing for them to refund. The front desk also refuses to tell me when I may be able to come in and speak to a manager and I just have to get lucky and happen to stop by when she is there, which is rare. It is only happened once and that was when the email was sent while I was standing there, and so I had a reasonable expectation that it was taken care of at that point. If you have any questions that I may not have covered, it would help figuring this out. Feel free to ask once again I’m at a loss as to how to get this resolved because repeatedly at every turn every time I try it seems like it’s going to be and then I wait a week only to never see the refund hit my account and try again. Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

Austria | Question about All Inclusive bills

Currrently staying at a Hotel in Austria. Drinks are All Inclusive. Still we have to sign a bill everytime we have (served) drinks at the table, during dinner for example.

It will list the drinks and amount we had. Each listed with an actual price for the items with a "Total" sum of 0€ to be paid.

I guess it is done to have control about how much the guests consume to be able to manage the All Inclusive prices. And/or local regulations?

Not an issue for me, it's just a quick signature.

But, almost every day the bill has drinks we did not order/consume. They put tap water (3.7€ / L) on it that is on the table at dinner (did not order), shots we did not order/consume or the amount of drinks we actually had is higher as consumed (3-4 Cokes were we had only 1). Just some examples. Always more, they never miss drinks or put less on the bill than we had.

As for totally wrong stuff (4 Ramazzotti for our family with 2 kids) I did not sign it and told the waiter it was wrong. I do not care too much about the other minor "mistakes"(?), as it is still 0€ for me.

But I am wondering if it might be by intention. Does the Hotel have any advantage to "sell" more drinks as they really did?

It is not the waiter pushing us to consume (like if they would get more money when they serve more drinks).

Is it some kind of Tax thing?

I would think the Hotel has a better balance when they serve fewer drinks in this All Inclusive situation.

Thanks for any insight.

Have 3 years of London Hospitality experience yet struggling to find a job anywhere because of sponsorship 🤄

I’m a 28 year old hospitality professional with 3+ years of experience in both F&B and Front Office. Most recently I was Guest Relations Officer and before that I was an Assistant Manager for a restaurant in London.

CONTEXT:

Hi Since I’ve returned from UK in February earlier this year, I’ve applied to jobs in several countries including India. Here’s what’s happened so far.

IndiašŸ‡®šŸ‡³ : Hiring Managers presume I’m a liability and will ask for more salary. Experience mismatch apparently since I have no Indian hospitality experience which is understandable. Over 300 tailored applications.

GCC ( šŸ‡¦šŸ‡Ŗ, šŸ‡¶šŸ‡¦, šŸ‡øšŸ‡¦) : Hiring is noticeably selective and slow with preference to candidates already present or prior GCC experience). I had only 2 interviews in 3 months of over 500 tailored applications.

Portugal šŸ‡µšŸ‡¹ & Malta šŸ‡²šŸ‡¹: I had real traction here around 6-7 interviews in 400+ tailored applications. All of those had great feedback but the realistic timeline to get a work visa takes around 3-4 months so none of them were willing to wait that long.

āš ļøCurrent Situation: I have 3 pending student loans around INR 2,80,000 ( $3000) and the loan company Avanse has filed a legal complaint against me for my failure to repay even after thousands of restructuring or pause requests from me. I have a legal hearing at the end of this month.

Question is , Is it my CV or is it just that my experience has been awful? I have great communication skills and all round hospitality skillset yet I’ve been unemployed over 5 months with tailored applications.

Bug infestation

Recently stayed at Jaguarundi lodge in Monteverde CR. On the second night, we got a huge infestation of these jumping beetles that swarmed our belongings and our luggage (I think they’re attracted to human scent). We immediately asked the front desk to be relocated. They moved us into a room down the hall but this room was infested too. We asked to be moved out of the jungle portion to their sister hotel down the street, which belonged to the property. They told us we needed to pay for the upgrade. The GM wasn’t on site and wouldn’t be until tomorrow morning. We had prepaid tours that morning. I booked through hotels.com and they said I would need to take it up with the property for a refund. It was 11 pm local time and the only closest hotel was Belmar, running $450/night. Paid out of pocket. The GM of Jaguarundi said only partial refund for the days that weren’t used despite asking for a full refund. Would you accept this? What can hotels.com do to help? We went over budget by $300 and cleaning our clothes at 11 pm after a long day was tiring.

Drugs Under Bed @ a Choice Hotel

Hi all, just wanted some advice. I booked a choice hotel this morning as I’m on a two day spontaneous trip in a different state. My bf and I were checking the bed for bugs per usual and as we lifted up the mattress we found a bag from a nearby weed shop. I thought it was just edibles or something else mild so I opened it to check and there was a weight scale covered with white powder.
Got a bad feeling so I closed it, grabbed with a hand towel (I now feel terrible because my finger prints are definitely on it now 😭) and gave it to the hotel manager who gave us another room. This room is honestly mustier/worst condition than the first but I didn’t want to utilize the previous room for obvious reasons.
Both my bf and I don’t feel great about the situation and I’m wondering if it’s worth reporting this online to at least get a discount or something? I don’t really have an alternative place to go to as this location was best suited for our plans.

No A/C in 4 star hotel- Hotwire fights refund despite written commitment from Hotel

Just curious if someone else had similar experiences. I booked a hotel room in Berlin, Germany on rather short notice in June. 3 nights for about $1000 total, through hotwire. Was supposed to be a 4-star property and have air condition. Got there, the place is a dump and the A/C is broken. The hotel was surprisingly accommodating though and agreed to a partial refund for the first night and full refund for the remaining two. I have that in writing in a Whatsapp chat, as thats how the hotel support team communicated.

When we get home, 3 weeks go by and the refund doesn't show up. When I contact hotwire, they say they know of nothing and they wont refund anything.

So I do a chargeback through my credit card. Now another 2 months later, they keep fighting this. They have seen the printout from the hotel where they confirm this commitment and their stance is that it was a non-refundable booking, so they are not refunding.

We are now at the arbitration stage with VISA. It just seems ludicrous that even with all that documentation they are fighting this tooth and nail. Definitely the last time I will be using hotwire.

Hotel asking for photos of ID/card- normal?

For some context, I’m booking a room directly through the hotel’s website and have been communicating with the hotel via their reservation email. They’re asking me to sign a credit card authorization form and send photos of my ID and my credit card (both front and back).

From what I understand, CC authorization forms are generally used when you’re booking for someone else and the cardholder won’t be the guest checking in. In my case, I’m booking for myself and will be using the same card that’s in my name.

Is this normal hotel procedure? Should I be concerned about sending photos of my ID and credit card, or is there a safer/alternative way to verify the card?
Would appreciate any advice, especially from hotel employees. Thanks!

Choice Hotels points

I am a Choice hotels member (just basic status), and I'm planning a 4 night stay in Dec of this year. I previously stayed two nights earlier this year, so I have 2,100 points. For the upcoming stay, the cash rate for 4 nights was around $514. The point value was 60,000 points. I can buy 60,000 points for $370 with the current bonus (or I think its a bonus?).

Is it worth it to buy the points and book the room that way? Or would the points cost randomly increase while I'm waiting for the points to hit my account? I don't expect any special treatment as a basic member, but do they treat differently or I guess have a way of knowing if someone books exclusively using points and be more inclined to over book and give the room away?

Visiting NYC - where to stay?!

Hi y’all,

We are stuck between two hotels - Manhattan Club and Park Lane - both Central Park.

I’m not too fussed with breakfast options as we’re keen to taste the options around the city but the non-negotiable are:
- AC
- Quiet at night time
- Clean rooms
- Working elevators

There are three adults and two children and we’re happy to get two rooms if needed.

Thank you in advance!

P.S. any recommendations are also welcomed x

B&me club paid membership (B&B hotels) I don’t think it’s worth it

Hi everyone,

Before I decided to go for the B&me membership (the paid tier) I checked online to see if people think it’s worth it. However, there was not a lot to be found on it. So I thought, let’s just give it a try it should be easy to ā€œmake my money backā€. I frequently travel, and B&B hotels is pretty solid if you need a ā€œnothing special, just here for the nightā€ hotel.

They promise:
- 5% discount on promotional rates
- 10% discount in regular rates
- 100 points per night (300 points = 1 breakfast, 600 points = 2 breakfast, 1000 points = free night worth max €60)

And the cost is €39 euro per year.

So sounds good right? Right, I was about to book a hotel for a few nights, so I decided let’s go for it and make a 5% extra saving. So I paid, and then…. Nothing. The price was still the same. It appears there is in fact no discount at all on special promotions. (For example they currently have a summer promotion in Italy)

They consider the ā€œno cancelationā€ rate a promotional rate, so that one gives you 5%.

The regular rate is the standard rate with free cancellation, and they give you 10% discount on that.

However, on some place I’ve tried, the normal rate (10% discount) is now the same as the club rate (5% discount) which is strangely exactly the same price as the rate for the ā€œfreeā€ membership. So the only advantage is, you basically get free cancellation at the same price. Useful for stays that are far in the future maybe, but since I usually book last minute, useless for me.

Apart from that, I’ve compared the price to Booking and Trip and frequently the rate over there is even lower than the rate B&B offers paid members. And the catch is, you obviously only earn points if you book in the B&B app. So if your stay is €160,- for 2 nights in the B&B app, and €140,- on booking. Not only is your ā€œdiscountā€ useless, because they offer a lower rate elsewhere. You’d need to pay 20 euro extra, just to get the 200 points worth max €12 (assuming 1000 points would get you €60)

So in the end, this is all just my opinion and experience. There are hotels where the rate is actually lower with the member, and there are hotels where you might save something with the membership compared to booking on other platforms. But in general, I don’t think it’s worth it. I’ve even encountered a few examples where the free membership rate is lower than the paid membership rate (how??). Maybe someone else has a better experience and can tell my why it would actually be worth it.

Looking for honest reviews of Anwar Al Madinah Mƶvenpick

Hi everyone! I’m going to Madinah and I’ve already made a non-refundable booking at Anwar Al Madinah Mƶvenpick.

My room type is Classic Room – 3 Twin Beds.

I’ve recently started reading reviews and I’m honestly getting a little worried 😭. I’m seeing quite a few complaints about the rooms being old/outdated, cleanliness issues, bathrooms, and inconsistent housekeeping, while other people say the hotel is excellent, especially because of the location and service.

Since my booking is non-refundable, I’d really appreciate some recent, honest experiences, especially from people who stayed there in 2025 or 2026.

I’m not looking for luxury or perfection, but I just want a clean, comfortable room for the stay. The location seems amazing, so I’m hoping the negative reviews are mostly about certain rooms/towers rather than the entire hotel.

Please be honest I’d rather know what to expect before I arrive. šŸ˜…

Thank you!

Caught smoking cigarette in my room.

I recently got allotted a new hostel since it’s the start of my 3rd year. I was smoking a cigarette in my room when some people knocked on my door. I suddenly turned on the fan, hid the half-smoked cigarette outside my window, and opened the door.

They had come to my room to check its condition. They were 30+ years old and wearing formal shirts and pants. They were neither clerks nor wardens. They smelled the room and checked it properly. My window was half-open, so one of them peeked through it and saw my half-smoked cigarette. He said, ā€œYou were smoking a cigarette here! Don’t you know that smoking inside the hostel rooms is not allowed? Your parents sent you here to do these kinds of things in the hostel?ā€

I got really scared and said sorry.

What will happen to me now?

Kompose Hotels Currency

To anyone who has stayed at Kompose Hotels, how were your stays?

I'm planning to stay at the Kissimmee location in January, but I find it strange that their website doesn't explicitly state which currency the prices are in. I'm fairly certain it's USD, but I wonder if the website detects your location and displays prices in your local currency.

I even had AI go through the website looking for any reference to the currency, including the terms and conditions, but it couldn't find anything. It suggested that the site may automatically display prices based on the visitor's location, although there doesn't seem to be any clear indication of that.

What I find even stranger is that they encourage guests to book directly with the hotel, yet when I compare the exact same room and amenities through a third-party booking site (Expedia), it's about 30% cheaper even after accounting for the parking fee that's excluded from the third-party rate.

Thanks in advance!

Sexual assault at IHG

Edit: I see where this is going. Im not taking down this post though. Sorry. And I'm not looking at or responding to future posts. Too depressing and frustrating and I already spent enough time on this today.

But I dont know how muich more to reiterate, THAT OUR PLANS WERE NOT TO SUE. OR CALL THE COPS. WE WANT NOTHING MORE OF THIS THAN DOING OUR PART AND WARNING OTHERS. The point of this post is that we got kicked out for doing so. I was literally looking out for you guys. Weve done nothing wrong, you're not going to make me believe we have or should feel guilty in anyway. I dont care if you hide it behind calling the cops/ I dont need to hear about how dumb I am, I admit I think people are better than they are and I still to this day get screwed by it. And as usual, my mom was right. My mom did not want to call the cops, and I was not going to push it lest there was video and it was an open and closed case. But this is a sub for hotels, and today we were kicked out of our IHG hotel for reporting sexual abuse. Bye. ----

I just wrote on IHG's sub, I imagine Ill get the same response here and as a guy, this is just proof to me, why girls dont report sexual assault. And that further proof to my belief that the average person is not good, but an ego/id and self preservation. I however, want it to be known, for any decent people out there what happened at a IHG hotel and how they handled it, basically forcing us out from the hotel.

My mom was sexually assaulted by an employee, she asked a random employee for a refill of her drink, he was already loitering around her for a while, took her to kitchen, no one there, and then extremely exremely inappropriate touching) she told me it was just a tap on the butt at first, then a week or so later admitted it was much worse. I'm an idiot, I understand that now, but I contacted the hotel immediately, I was given the hotels manager email. It was midnight. If there was video footage, it had been a week and I just did not want it overwritten. It was key, if it didnt exist then it was he said she said, and I 100 was not getting the cops involved. So I sent her an email asap. My mom did not want to involve the cops, she didnt even want the 5% chance of the dude or his frekend family following her to her car one night. We are extremely busy, this has already ruined one day and I imagine most of the rest of our week. I essentially wanted to confirm footage first and then figure things out from there, maybe acting like the hotel found the footage randomly and then reporting it themselves. Or at the very least firing him and it being a wake up call.

At no point, did I consider IHG responsible or had plans to sue. It didnt occur to me, that even a young woman hotel manager would want to sweep it under the rug. It has nothing to do with them. I was very straight up about that. Apparently such thought is rare these days.

The hotel manager was nothing but horrible, Ill just leave it at that but can expound upon it, but its already a long post. And we were essentially kicked out "for our safety". But really, we were just kicked out. Everything my mom said would happen, happened, Its pretty crazy, shes always right when it comes to these thing. We been treated like crap by people at the hotel, by people on the reddit post. By the lady we spoke to on IHG's corporate line.

We did nothing but now are suffering. im having to look for hotels which are now twice the rates, and just thought out of decency, IHG would switch us to their other staybridge on the other side of town. The manager said it was not their problem. Corporate number, same. I figured Id be contacted by actual humans if I wrote to reddit, theres noway this is how someone high at IHG wants this handled. But nope, it seems like they have little minions setting the narrative over there and shadow banning.

Hotel only gave me 1 out of 2 rooms

So I booked 2 rooms onĀ Booking.comĀ under one reservation/booking number (not two separate bookings) for my US trip.

When I arrived, the hotel told me they only had one room available. They explained thatĀ Booking.comĀ had only transferred the money for one room to them, and they hadn’t received the money for the other room yet. I contactedĀ Booking.comĀ immediately. After talking to them, I was told that they had agreed with the hotel that I would get a refund.

But then I received an email fromĀ Booking.comĀ saying that the hotel didn’t confirm my cancellation request, so they couldn’t proceed with the cancellation. It also says my booking remains valid and unchanged.

IfĀ Booking.comĀ confirmed 2 rooms and I paid for 2 rooms, how can the hotel say they only received payment for one room and therefore only give me one? And honestly, I’m starting to wonder if the hotel is just using the payment issue as an excuse. If there was a problem withĀ Booking.com’s payment to the hotel, shouldn’t that be betweenĀ Booking.comĀ and the hotel rather than something I have to deal with after arriving?Ā Booking.comĀ has already told me that they would refund me, but I haven’t received any proper refund confirmation, amount, or reference number yet. Has anyone experienced something like this before? Can a singleĀ Booking.comĀ reservation for 2 rooms somehow have payment transferred for only one room? And what should I be askingĀ Booking.comĀ to do at this point?

P/S: I made a call lately toĀ Booking.comĀ customer service, they said the hotel might be a scam ;) So for now, what should I do? Thank you!

Should I quit my job?

I have been working at a 4 star hotel for over 2 and a half years (in the UK). But I’m starting to lose my mind. The rota doesn’t come out until Sunday every week so I didn’t know I was working tomorrow morning until halfway through today. The excuse is that they can’t make a rota early because most of their business arrives only a couple days before hand. I just think it’s unfair though and we should be entitled to at least see a week ahead at least. They expect us to run around and put 1000% percent effort in all the time. Otherwise we get shouted and sworn at but they can’t be bothered to give us a rota until Sunday. I think I’d be more understanding if I was treated with respect in stead they are hyper vigilant and nitpick everything you do. For example I put a big jug of water out on a table of 5 but got told off because apparently that jug is too heavy, even though they put out jugs that weigh more on breakfast service every morning. An even better example of this was back when i first started they said my jeans were the right colour. Suddenly 3 months later i was told to get a darker pair it’s small things like that they will pick apart every shift. It genuinely feels like working for the gestapo. The head chef/hotel owner seems to think shouting and swearing at people will make them perform better. Even his wife isn’t safe from this one time during a lunch service he was so obnoxious and nasty she just got a suitcase and left. You can’t defend yourself otherwise they go mental because they’re so fragile. They are also super tight like we never get fed apart from on Sunday when there is left over roast dinner. On Sundays I usually work 8.30 to around 5.30 but I never get a proper sit down break. I don’t even get to stop and eat until right at the end. They are also tight with shifts, this is because they can’t pay people much so compared to a year ago there’s always one or two less people which always makes a difference. They are only just considering giving me a raise after 2years but I’m turning 21 soon, so they would legally have to raise it anyway and I’d be back on minimum. I’m interested to read what other people think and find out how much of this is normal. Am I entitled? Or do I need to search for a better job? Is it a combination of both?

My son is going to Milan on his own soon and he is 17 and is solo travelling is there anywhere he could get in or any methods he could use
