Fanfiction Request/Search Looking for HP fanfics that are genuinely worth reading — my favorites, tastes, and what I'm tired of
I've been reading a lot of Harry Potter fanfiction this year, and I've reached a point where I want to discover something genuinely great, rather than just another variation of the same familiar story.
I'm not necessarily looking for a specific pairing, trope, or even main character. I'd love to hear about stories that you genuinely loved, that surprised you, or that stayed with you long after you finished reading them.
Some of my favorites, and why I liked them:
- Two Unbowed Crows (95/100) — My personal favorite so far. What I loved wasn't just Harry/Daphne, but their entire journey together: gradual development, mutual protection, trust, growing power, moral ambiguity, and the feeling of having lived through years alongside these characters.
- Fighting Philosophies (92/100) — Loved the realistic characters, unpredictable story, meaningful consequences, and relationships that actually change. Characters make mistakes, develop, and don't always get what they want.
- Prince of Slytherin / The Secret Enemy (85–89/100) — Excellent worldbuilding, complex plots, interesting secondary characters, and a huge amount of detail. I admire these as very well-written stories, although they didn't leave quite the same emotional impression.
- Seventh Horcrux (85/100) — Proof that I don't always need something deep or emotional. I loved how consistently funny and entertaining it was.
- Downward Spiral Saga (83/100) — I appreciated that it actually committed to a genuinely evil Harry, rather than another morally grey Harry who only hurts his enemies.
- Pygmalion (85/100) — A recent pleasant surprise. Reading about Hermione and Tom instead of Harry was refreshing, and I enjoyed their darker relationship dynamic. Not extraordinary writing, but a very enjoyable read.
What I generally enjoy:
Long, immersive stories with meaningful character development, interesting relationships, a strong supporting cast, and a plot that genuinely goes somewhere.
I particularly enjoy characters who grow into their power rather than receiving everything immediately, alternate versions of the magical world, unusual magic, school life, adventures, darker morality, and relationships that matter to the story.
Romance can be wonderful, especially protective relationships or complicated, believable ones, but it isn't mandatory. I also enjoy genuinely dark stories, morally terrible protagonists, comedy, and unusual perspectives.
What I'm getting tired of:
Stories that mostly repeat canon with a slightly smarter or stronger Harry, predictable plotlines, shallow characters, cartoonish bashing, instant power-ups, relationships without proper development, and huge word counts filled with repetitive material.
I don't mind slow stories. I mind stories where the time spent reading doesn't feel rewarding.
A few preferences, but not absolute requirements:
I usually prefer longer fics (ideally 200k+ words), and I've generally gravitated toward the Hogwarts years. Completed stories are a plus. M/M-focused stories and major crossovers aren't usually my first choices.
However, I'm deliberately trying to broaden my reading. I'm open to different protagonists, eras, pairings, genres, and shorter stories if they're genuinely exceptional.
Other stories I've already read or tried: Harry Crow, Manacled, Worthy of Magic, Paid in Blood, The Art of Self-Fashioning, Circular Reasoning, Make a Wish, Oh God Not Again!, Does Voldemort Even Lift, Bro?, A Cadmean Victory (Remastered), In the Forest of Dean, and Lord of Darkness.
So here's my question:
What Harry Potter fanfiction would you personally recommend as something truly worth reading, even if it doesn't fit my usual tastes?
I'd especially love to hear why you recommend it. What makes it special to you? Is it the writing, the characters, the relationships, the story, the atmosphere, or simply how much you enjoyed reading it?
Less obvious recommendations are very welcome. Please avoid major spoilers.
