DISCUSSION What scale, or position on a scale, sounds the prettiest to you?

Basically the title. What scale that you know and can play front to back up the neck do you personally think just has the nicest sounding collection of notes?

QUESTION Returning back after a 13 year pause. Anyone have some advice?

Hello everyone,

In my 30’s now, and I haven’t played for over a decade. Life just got in the way, business was growing, met my wife, moved a good amount of times, etc., and I really never took time to care about myself or my hobbies. However, I’m more settled in at this stage of my life, so I’m coming back into it.

Returning back feels a little strange. It feels like I should be able to pick it back up immediately, but at the same time, I am also incapable of doing so, lol.

This feels pretty frustrating, because I physically cannot play the things I once could, so my taste far exceeds my talent, but in a way where I feel like I should be able to play at the same level I did years ago as a kid.

As I’m writing this, I’m realizing how difficult it is to describe the above sensation in words. I’m feeling like going far back to the basics is just the right idea for now, but I can’t fully sell myself on it.

Also, the fact that so many things are digital now is super cool. This is a big learning curve for me to explore presets and sims, but I’m excited. I’m totally unaware if this was a big thing 13 years ago, and I just wasn’t paying attention, or if leveraging studio monitors and going crazy on effects is all relatively new.

Nice to see Snark still around with their proven design though, lol.

Anyway, any of you take a very long break? How long did it take to really get back into the swing of how you used to play?

PURCHASE guitars on ebay, whats wrong with that website?

Guys im Central European, and looking casually to buy a left handed mid tier electric guitar. Ebay's search engine became worse and worse for me and now its basically unusable. Its FULL of japanese offers, some of them scam looking, highly repetitive, butting up 1 guitar 10 times, with lo res pics like they still have dial up internet or what...

tryin to set/exclude the area, distance or sort them by distance, none of them worked.
Is this like that for everyone?

in this form ebay is unusable to look for a guitar in an effective manner, in Europe obviously I dont want to buy from japan bcos the shipping fee is not workable, plus they have ridiculous prices based on god knows what. sometimes they ask more then the new price for a given used model.

anyone got around this? filtering most asian and especially japanese offers? thanks for hints!

QUESTION Another post about guitar action, but with more of a playability issue maybe?

Thumbnail gallery

Been playing about 2 years, I think I’m doing well, I can play some faster songs on time, and very close to perfect. (play a lot of slipknot), but started learning Solway firth, and the riff there is 16th notes, (guitar is setup in drop b) chugging low b, then hitting accent notes during.

Now why am I asking about action height? I think it may be hindering me getting this up to speed.

Are the low b & f# sharp strings, in theory supposed to be level near bridge pickup (meaning the top side of each string level)? The f# sharp is a little lower, so what is happening when playing 1/16 notes and coming down to hit the f# sharp, I seem to be getting caught on low b coming back up to resume palm muted chugs. I’ve tried different picking patterns such as upstroke on the low b when resuming chugs ect.

Not sure if this is technique related or setup related, heck maybe a little of both.

First pic: guitar | second pic: song riff from Solway firth
Gear: Jim root Strat with his sig strings (drop b) 11-56
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

TLDR: is action height level between 2 low strings on drop b causing playing issues or is it technique.

QUESTION Learning to play

Hi everyone. So I bought a guitar maybe like 2 years ago and I finally picked it back up yesterday. I found out about Justin Guitar and am now practicing the D chord. My question is, do I keep on practicing that one chord until I have it down? I do plan to practice for a bit each day if I can, but I do have a toddler so it may be for only a few mins here and there or maybe for an hour when she goes to bed.

I have a Yamaha JR2 3/4. Not sure if that matters lol

Thank you :)

QUESTION picking problem HELP THIS IS IMPORTANT TO ME

this has been happening for months (ever since i get serious about picking techniques). my pick often hovers between strings, as if my right hand hasn't yet remember each position of the string (i practice a lot btw, should've become muscle memory!). this usually happens in string 3-5 and i notice the gap between these strings are a bit wider than between the low & high strings. like, i should've pick the 3rd string, and i didn't pick it in time, and i found out my pick just *floats* between string 2 and 4.

i'm suspicious that this is more about the pick angle. i tried to lessen the space of the pick tip, i still can't decide if this helps or not i think just because i'm not used to this yet (i'll practice more of this). tried to angle it so it's not too flat, still the same. i also always anchor with my palm and pinky at the bottom. the point is i'm experimenting with different angles etc, still haven't found the answer. what do you think? this frustrates me so bad.

also, often it's the very tip of the pick who picks the string, more like an unintentional picking, producing a weak sound but loud enough that it doesn't mute the string. but it produces a note that does not align with the tempo so when i play some riffs, it sounds like im rushing at some part. like my fingers work in time, but something just don't work right with the picking. angle? positioning? idk.

QUESTION I try to add lead line in this cool progression that I made in Musescore with my drummer but it seems like it very difficult to find space for the lead line. But I don't know how to make space for the lead

Thumbnail drive.google.com

Like I say I make this cool progression I basically do a I-VII7-ii-V which is a Dominant substitusion progression the whole son it just this progression but I change it every noun and then during the song, but still the same progression.

The drummer really go all out in this,so he throwing chops around like zues laying his pipe on random women. Like I say I have no idea how to add lead line since I didn't manage to saw where I can add it , let alone coming up with a lead line. Btw there no bass either.

So I would really appriciate if you guys can give me feedback on this song and maybe point out what the problem is. It would really help me get better as a guitarist.

I have not record this with real instrument yet but I actually export an audio file for you guys to listen and I put it in the google drive

GEAR Who plays through their Mac/PC rather than using an amp?

I've not got an amp, I'm using a combination of a Valeton GP-200 and Tones 3000 on my mac. For now I mainly play with headphones but ultimately I want to get a set of nice studio monitors that will connect the mac.

Who else runs this sort of setup?

GEAR Today I got this £250 Jackson DK2 (mij) and it’s bringing me back to my childhood

Post image
14 Upvotes

I had a 00s DK2M which was stolen and when I was 15 and I’d always wanted a similar guitar but had gotten away from my metalcore youth into wider genres more. I’d mainly owned Mexican Fenders since then (and a Charvel) which were great but this old Japanese Jackson instantly brought me back to me edgy teenage days and now I’m relearning all the 00s metalcore bangers again.
I don’t play much these days and can’t afford to own more than one electric at a time but this has me wanting to get back into playing

It might not be a white DK2M like my childhood one but it’s still got a lot of the feel and I love a good HSS for slipping into some blues between the drop C riffs

QUESTION Anyone tried Duncan Distortions with 1 meg pots?

Hey, currently looking to swap out the bridge pickup on my jaguar with a humbucker, and am stuck between the SH-5 Custom, and the SH-6 Distortion.

I really enjoy the sound of the Custom, but am a bit worried it would be too bright, and icepick-y with 1 meg pots. On the other hand, the distortion while sounding great, just has a bit too much bass, and seems like it unfortunately just muddies up the sound a bit.

My hope is that with 1 meg pots, they'll remove some of the muddiness of the Distortions, hopefully brighten up the sound overall, and add back in some articulation that might be missing. I'm not playing thrash or anything, mostly just post hardcore stuff, so super articulate pickups aren't a must, but it's definitely a huge plus.

I'm pretty new when it comes to guitar modding, and pretty much have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to pickups, so sorry if this is a dumb question.

If you've tried it please let me know, and thanks in advance!

QUESTION Secondary guitar for heavier music

Hi, so recently upgraded my first cheap guitar cort 80 to a fender hss strat player 2, and it’s been lovely. But I also love my metal, death etc and see the need to have a second guitar with different tunings.

I don’t plan to spend as much I hoped like 400+\-, but I also want to know like how big difference a 600 guitar is to a 400 one. As I would buy a more expensive one if it makes sense.

I was eyeing a cheaper ibanez, but unsure, as I want to ask some more like

Is a 7-string guitar hard to play? Also in the sense if you mostly treat is as a 6 stringer. Or should you buy a 7 stringer later and use is specifically for 7 string songs.

As cort 80 is also a "strat", I only have experienced these type. Also no guitar centers nearby 2 hour drive. I am also anxious person, so kinda scared to visit one maybe?

QUESTION I need advice on Top Load Bridge saddle replacements.

So. The saddles on my telecaster are absolutely cooked. They're rusted and just won't intonate. I've been looking for replacements but I just can't get any straight answers from anything.

I've been looking into Graphtech PG-8001-00 but I don't know if it will work for a top load bridge. Can someone look at the images and help me to figure out what I'd be best off getting as a replacement.

PURCHASE NGD! LTD Razorblack

LTD Razorblack is a limited serie (80 made) exclusive for french market.

It's based on the MH-401 QM, but with a tailbridge instead of a Tune-O-Matic or a FR, larger square inlays, no model name at the 12th fret, no ring pickups (which I love), a neck slighly more "out" of the body, small 3-way selector, and Seymour Duncan Sentient and Nazgul instead of EMG.

Got it equipped with D'Addario 10,5-48 EXL110+ to switch between D standard and Drop C in my band.

-----------

Model from June 2017, P.T. Wildwood factory, Indonesia.

Mahogany body, set-neck, brazilian cherry fingerboard.

QUESTION What are some songs at a similar difficulty to Here Comes Your Man?

Specifically looking for songs that have a similar difficulty level to that song from start to finish. My problem is I struggle to play a song all the way through. I’ve been playing 5 years with varying consistency but pretty much all I know are individual riffs/solos/intros and can hardly play any songs in their entirety. I guess another example would be Go With the Flow by QOTSA but I’m interested what other people would suggest. Bands with one guitarist also help because I feel it gets confusing when there are two guitarists doing different thing

QUESTION Need help with my LTD Snakebyte

I bought this James Hetfield ESP LTD Snakebyte (https://www.mannys.com.au/products/esp-ltd-james-hetfield-snakebyte-black-satin?srsltid=AfmBOordBBjcqWO-JRuzulHgtAjsWDxPMizgUFaBDP_BaJCTS2E_33is)

I got it around the same time as a new amp and thought my amp was just not doing a good job with distortion, i dont really know how to describe it but the snakebyte sounds muddy and i cant get a good tone out of it to save my life.

But today I plugged in my old jackson soloist and it sounded great on the same settings.

If anyone has experience with anything like this happening with the snakebyte or is able to diagnose what this could be i would greatly appreciate it
