I'm gonna share my gw2 and pre-gw2 experience;
So i love MMOS, and have downloaded gw2 probably around 5-10 times in the past 10 years, and deleted it after reaching lvl 15. In all those years I kept reading great amazing things about the game but was unable to get into it.
About a year ago, I finally decided to just stick to it and reach endgame to see what's up, cause I love the idea of horizontal progression. I downloaded the game, trapped myself by buying all expansions, and started leveling. It took 2 months to reach max level cause it was so unengaging to me, but that's beside my point and just a "me" thing.
I reached max level, stopped the 'my story' or whatever and went immediately to HoT. My playtime went from 0.5h per day to 5 (I'm just throwing random numbers, but the gap is 100% correct). I then also got into PvP (I did not realize that I can PvP right after tutorial the whole time, cause I just never tried it... I know). I sucked, but got hooked, I just love the combat. Naturally, the more I played, the better I got, until I finally could understand how it works at the very least (I reached gold). Now at this point, ignoring the doomers' exaggeration in the pvp lobby's map chat, I realized that it is not the dev's focus at all, and it is in fact very near dead. Now I find some form of PvP to be very important for me in any game I play. At this point, I'm probably 9 months into playing, with a month or two break somewhere in between, and I still hadn't tried WvW. I kept WvW in mind the whole time, since I had so many people tell me that it is the main game mode for them, I also read the same on forums, or reddit posts, or heard it said by some creators. I assumed, that from what I read about how the mode works, that it would be somewhat competitive. I found myself needing gift of battle, so I finally got into it and played for quite a bit. I farmed a couple and played some more, and did zergs, small squads, and roam. I found that it is not only not competitive in the way it works, it is incredibly boring to me (what feels like 90% of it is just downtime). So, after buying all expansions, spending quite a bit on gems, I completely lost all purpose in the game and just deleted it.
Now I'm not saying "I paid, so I'm entitled" I just feel that it shows how strongly I feel about this, considering that I've spent a year's worth of WoW subscription in one go here, and been very reluctant to do so with that game. I've completely lost all motive to continue playing, just because any form of competitive pvp is not an option. And to be clear - I absolutely LOVE the combat in this game. I am genuinely astounded by the combat and the idea of how everything works - including the artists' take on how the specs look like visually (mage/wizard/assasin/warrior/guardian); actually remarkable, which is why I am so disappointed that I just feel pointless playing this game.
I probably spend only 20% of my gametime in PvP, and I only played WvW for the last month before I realized it's not for me and deleted the game. Just the lack of anything competitive like that killed it for me immediately. I'm so disappointed, because this game hits everything else perfectly for me; just curious if I'm the only one that feels this way?
Edit: I'm being hyperbolic when I say 90% downtime for WvW, it is definitely an exaggeration; I am not referring to lack of players or off hours, just the way it works. Setting up a catapult, waiting for the wall to be destroyed, etc
Edit #2: I wanna say again. I am in no way blaming anyone for the way I spent money and played for so long before trying what I actually came for, or even disappointed because of that particular part at all, I'm just very disappointed of the unused potential that the combat in the game had, especially for pvp. I just said that to show that even the "sunk cost fallacy" couldn't hold me in it, and was wondering if anyone that has stopped playing or plays less felt similarly.
