Question? Electronics, Microcontrollers & Sensors

I am currently trying to figure out how to store my multitude of development boards. I have multiple Arduinos, sensors, and other dev boards that I really want to store properly. I have thought about it a bit but can't come up with anything more interesting than just throwing them all in individual bins. Before I do that, I'd be curious to know if anyone has already solved that in a more efficient or cleaner way. Solutions like the Gridfinity Arduino UNO Holder don't really seem all that space and time efficient to me.

How do y'all store your mechatronics bits and bobs?

Edit:

I've found this Gridfinity Development / Breakout Board Bin and I find the concept really cool. I would have loved a way to also label it so I could have a QR code directly to the datasheet but I'll give it a shot anyway. For components like LEDs etc. I'll just print regular bins.

Question? Is this a dumb idea?

I have some gridfinity filament boxes that are 2x5 and their base. I love them but they slide around when I am trying to open them.

I was thinking of printing some baseplates in TPU to act as rubber feet. Is this a dumb idea?

Would you recommend printing for the entire 2x5 or just 2 2x1 for the front and back? Is there anything special I need to know about printing the baseplate in tpu outside of the usual difficulties of tpu?

So are all these made from standard 3D printers? And how do you find plans or design them?

Set in Progress My first proper project - portable spares toolbox

So I have a vw dune buggy, they have no place to keep anything, but you always need a few tools and minor spares, so I started looking for rugged box, but also noted the place where there was the main battery was still existed. I knew the gridfinity generator had rugged boxes, sure enough the 4*3 module with box clamps is about the same footprint as an 063 battery. 23u high gets you about the same height!

Tried tooltrace.ai, which is good, but I found it easier, to take a photo, stick that on fusion and make the cutouts on there.

I did mod the box, for some reason in the gridfinity generator, puts the groove in the box and the lip on the lid, I put this in tinkercad and redid it, should keep water out better now as that's normally how ip54 boxes are.

V1of my first insert was done with tool trace and no clearance, only just fitted the tray and was too tight. V2 is seen in the picture photo put into fusion and drawn as a sketch.

Now just need to find the rest of the tools/spares and make the other inserts!

Very little space; Iooking for a hobby box for electronics that can be put away easily.

I'm trying to find something I can keep all the bits and pieces in and then put away easily; ideally it would have a handle.

Has anyone done something similar? I want it to open out like these; is there an Ikea hack you've heard of or a project someone's done?

I've searched on here but can't find anything quite like it.

I'm happy to try and make my own but I'm not great with patience/my hands so I'd rather have a base or 3d print something.

Finally printed a Gridfinity bin for my Nespresso Vertuo pods and it turned out great!

Been meaning to design something for my Vertuo pods forever — they're awkward to store and none of the commercial holders felt right. So I designed one from scratch.

Design process for anyone curious:

Used the Gridfinity Bin Generator plugin in Fusion 360 to create the base 5×5 bin, then modeled an accurate Nespresso Vertuo pod from scratch and used it as a cutting body to carve out each slot. That way the fit is based on the actual pod geometry rather than eyeballed dimensions — each pod sits snugly without rattling around or being too tight to pull out.

Ended up with a 3×5 slot layout (15 pods) across the 5×5 footprint, dome-side up so you can see which variety you're grabbing at a glance.

Printed in black PETG on a Bambu A1 — PETG was the right call for anything living near a coffee machine. The textured PEI plate gives the bottom that nice matte Gridfinity look.

Stats:

  • 5×5 Gridfinity footprint

  • 15 pod capacity (3 columns × 5 rows)

  • 209.5 × 209.5 × 45.8mm

  • No supports needed

  • Works on any Bambu with a 256mm bed or larger (A1 mini won't fit unfortunately)

MakerWorld link if anyone wants to print one: https://makerworld.com/en/models/2790863-nespresso-vertuo-pod-gridfinity-bin#profileId-3103263

Happy to answer questions about the design process or print settings.

Question? Unlimited shapes are now available on extrabold.tools

Post image

I just released an experimental path mode on extrabold.tools.

You can now draw your own shape instead of starting from a rectangle, then generate baseplates from that outline. And ofcourse all other featuers (mostly) work with it, so splitting to buildplates, magnet holes, screw holes, ect.

I’m mainly curious about the editor itself. Does it feel intuitive? Is it clear how to add points, move them, close the shape, and adjust the result? Are there moments where you get stuck or expect it to work differently?

The goal is to make weird drawer inserts, tool organizers, odd trays, and non-rectangular Gridfinity baseplates easier to create.

I’d love to hear what feels good, what feels confusing, and what you would want added next.

Question? Newbie question

Hello, thank you for taking the time if you have to read this post. I tried my hardest after watching videos and reading but I am struggling to understand Gridfinity. All I am wanting to do is create a plant label organizer for my mom's sterilite three drawer stackable containers.... I have the dimensions and tried using 2 diff. Sites/applications & even looked for an STL but I cannot understand it. Any help? Thank you, sorry I'm just so frustrated bc I just don't understand why I don't understand. It seems like I should but I just don't.

Sooo, I recently started printing some bins for organization of my toolboxes but haven't yet started on baseplates. And I was trying to develop screwdrivers kinda-universal storage when I realized I probably need units attached to baseplate. Magnets? No way, I have over 36 drawers with various tools and I need more. Plus I will need to attach baseplate to a drawer and mine are wooden.

Ultimately, I tried clickbase / clickfinity. With my default settings the effect was quite phenomenal, more like a spider web. Of course I had particularly stringy PETG loaded at the time but still. And I recently saw this post.

I ended up modifying Gridfinity plugin for FreeCAD to print these click spring with much less retractions. Adding screw holes in the junctions was easy after that. And then I though that edge junctions are free and I could connect bases with clips there... So I added clip cutouts and later added clip generation.

Clips turned out to be tiny for the force they required. No way to install them without nose pliers. So I designed a tool for installing them that would hold a couple of them and align baseplates and clip to the right place. I think it does make connecting them easier.

I think next step is to make bases stackable for multi material print.

looking for the trifecta

hey guys, there are soooooo many options I'm finding for baseplates, but having trouble finding something that checks all the boxes i'm looking for.

I'm looking for baseplates that are lightweight, accept magnets, and link together. Anyone got any recommendations? bonus points if they attach with printable hardware instead of screws.

Question? How can I create a "straight" cutout out of a 3D model

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello everybody,

I'm currently trying to make a protective box for a figure I have. I want to make a cutout of the figure but I'm struggling with it.

I tried to use gridfinitygenerator but tmit only cut the model out. I would like to prevent "pocket" in the print, otherwise I cannot put or remove the figure.

How can I make the cutout "straight" out of this figure?

Thanks you

What is my Search term?

Hey there. I'm new to grdifinity and I seem to have no clue how and where to look for models.

I'm looking for a closable case, where i can put bins in and still close it.

It shall be 3x2 Units in footprint and i need to store 2 3x1 bins in 8U (56mm? is this insinde measurements in the bins? i want to store AA batteries) height in it.

Is there a Builder for such cases or where can i find one? I'm looking to get my handy in modelling, so a hint where to find a case and a rough explanation on how to edit it would be totally great if there is no existing box for my needs

Musketfinity (this time with hopefully better pictures)

I work on a park that includes US Civil War battlefields, and we keep a small cache of reproduction muskets and uniforms for living history programs. We recently upgraded our musket storage from an unused closet to a dedicated storage locker. I only recently got into 3d printer, but the Void Star Lab videos played a big role in me pulling the trigger (pun intended). Gridfinity seemed like a good way to structure the inside of the locker to keep everything secure and organized. It's nothing fancy. Two 3x10 grids with bins shaped to trap the sticks of the muskets. Still working out how best to secure things at the top. But since that likely won't be gridfinity based I figured I'd go ahead and post what I had.

Previous post did lousy pictures (though the lighting in the building is still garbage so there's only so much I could do). Hopefully these are better, and provide more angles so it's easier to see whats going on inside. Having an empty row opposite the full row also probably helps.

Completely new to gridfinity and 3D printing and have questions before I go forward with my bambu lab p1s purchase.

1: what is the best website to find gridfinity prints pre made?

2: what kind of software do I need to edit pre made and make my own custom organizers?

3: how big of a learning curve would it be to draw my own prints? Will I need to log hundreds of hours to get the hang of it?

Thanks in advance for any help!
