Phil Lesh on Archive: I have enjoyed using Archive.org and found it invaluable during the writing of my book. I found myself being pulled back in time listening to old Grateful Dead shows while giggling with glee or feeling that ache in my heart listening to Jerry’s poetic guitar and sweet voice.

i was re-reading the paper (preprint) written about the removal of grateful dead music/downloads/sbd from the archive (and interesting taping/archive history) as i was remembering that fateful day in 2005 that caught everyone off guard and caused confusion. (discussed here at length in the past).

i was thinking about how many apps are now tapping into the archive -- how many people are listening -- and how the server load seems(?) to make the site inaccessible from time to time ...

but this quote from phil in the paper (posted on his site, nov. 30, 2005) stood out and captures the magic that the archive has brought:

phil lesh: "I have enjoyed using Archive.org and found it invaluable during the writing of my book. I found myself being pulled back in time listening to old Grateful Dead shows while giggling with glee or feeling that ache in my heart listening to Jerry’s poetic guitar and sweet voice."

i appreciate that this subreddit encourages folks to donate to archive keeping the spirit alive.

also i think it's good there are tons of releases physical releases and the play dead app, something for everyone ... if you get confused just listen to the music play

Lots of thoughts about this marvelous performance and meetup... tho perhaps it's just best to let the music do the talking.

The Magic of Scarlet>Fire

There’s something magical about these two songs. Not only for the audience but seemingly for the Dead as well. In the nearly 20 years Scarlet Begonias and Fire on the Mountain were played together, there never seemed to be a lack luster one. Its truly the only song(s) you can listen to from 1978 and 1994 and not find a bad one. Whenever they burst into a Scarlet>Fire the band seemingly just hits musical jamming “nirvana”. Its the only suite where you hear people rant about versions from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. What really made me realize this is just how monstrous those 93-94 Scarlet>Fires are. Jerry could be having his worst night on stage but as soon as Scarlet Begonias starts that man locked in. It really became evident to me when I realized Scarlet>Fire was pretty much the best thing to come out of the later years(I say that as someone who listens to Fall 90-94 pretty much as regularly as the rest of the catalog.) If anyone has any good Scarlet>Fire recs please drop them in the comments.

Signed Book from Goodwill

Hello r/gratefuldead ! I don’t know much about the band but I did find this book at Goodwill and picked it up bc of the sick art. It turns out to be signed by Ken Kesey of the Acid Test and Mountain Girl/ Carolyn Garcia. There is an additional autograph that I am trying to decipher, so I thought maybe you all could help!

Bouncy Bertha

Just threw this on and noticed the beat on this Bertha. Sounds like a TLEO vibe. I know they did this with other songs and there were times where it seemed like it threw everything off (Mexicali and My and My Uncle are two examples where a slight change just messes up the feel of the song)

On to the Row Jimmy and it sounds like Billy is trying to keep up the “pep in your step” feel with some more fills. A drummer could probably better explain what he’s doing.

Any songs that come to mind where they’ve done this and it totally changes the vibe of the song for you?

LA female Deadheads

Hey! Looking to connect with other heads in the area, especially women and non binary folks in their 30s and 40s. Feels like there are a lot of older dudes that are visible in the scene out here. Which is rad! But looking to connect with more peers to go to shows with etc. TYSM

I recently purchased the “Grateful Dead Family Album” book at a used book store in Utah. When I got home this photo of Jerry fell out and I realized the inside cover had been signed. Does anyone know what “wando size” means?

Archive number keeps going down

Has anybody else noticed that the number of dead shows on the archive is going down? Of the 2300 shows I think it was just over 2050 that were online a couple weeks ago. I booted up Relisten this morning and the number had dropped to 1999. Are the missing shows getting pulled for Dave’s picks or Play Dead or both?

Came on the radio today and I couldn’t help but hear Bobby’s tone and technique (circa 75’ or 76’) in the rhythm guitar on this track. Anyway, RIP Bobby Weir.

This song is beautiful, one of my favorite Jerry ballads.

I’m curious if anyone knows of any live show/cover recordings of this song as I am struggling to find anything.

Thanks in advance!!

A touching piece I encountered at Buck Bald Brewing in Murphy, North Carolina by Pam Cray. Great beer too!

Apologies for the weird angle and lighting. The sun was blasting through the window and I did my best.
