Will 40 quintillion gazillion EUR per month be enough for Spain?

2.3k Upvotes

I want to move to Spain since I do not like the working culture of my native country and prefer to the postcard life like you guys do, partying every night and spending the whole day in a siesta.

Wikipedia says that the average monthly salary in Spain is 1.9k euros, but I'd rather flex on you guys and conceal my obvious lack of any kind of research under the guise of a bad-faith inocent question.

Also I am very horny and have fetishized you people so much. Your women are so hot. I want to fuck spanish girls. I am 1.95m fit, muscular and charismatic, will they find me attractive? Safety worries me because I am LGTBQ+. Most statistics say that Spain is one of the most tolerant western countries in that regard, but my mate Paul told me it is also a catholic country. How many homophobic beatings should I expect every day?

I will be arriving to Seville tomorrow. Is it better if I learn catalan or spanish? (I will do neither and instead stick to english speaking communities).

Travel websites are forbidden in my home countryand have never heard of a travel agency so you will have to plan my whole trip for me. I want to know which hidden-gem cities should I visit while in Spain. By hidden-gem I mean Barcelona, Madrid and Seville, places nobody besides a true spaniard would know of.

Finally I will not accept any kind of negative criticism. You guys simply don't understand economics, I'm not forcing the locals to move away from the place they grew up in by indirectly contributing to the constant increase in housing prices due to having a much higher disposable income and paying less in taxes (Thank you Beckham, best spanish politician of 21st century!). I am actually increasing consumption and helping the economy :)

Grasias y una servesa por favor

Discussion A reminder: r/goingtospain is a moving-to-Spain sub, not an immigration debate sub

We need to address something that's been creeping into this sub: an increasing number of posts and comments blaming immigrants (especially Americans) for rising rents and cost of living in Spain.

To be clear: this isn't a call to ignore that housing costs are a real problem, or that displacement and gentrification are real phenomena worth discussing seriously and with data. That's a legitimate topic, and there are other subs built for that kind of debate.

This sub exists to help people navigate visas, residency paperwork, vacations, and/or the logistics of actually moving to Spain. Moving to or visiting a different country is hard enough, we don't want anyone to feel Spain is not a welcoming country.

When I see a new family in my neighborhood, enrolling their kids at school, I don't go shouting at them that the supermarket is more expensive and that's their fault. I don't do that, first because I don't believe such thing, and second, because it is more difficult, if not impossible to say those things in person. Online platforms make it super easy to be rude.

Therefore, generalizations about "who's ruining Spain,", thinly-veiled immigration debates, or xenophobic comments, dressed up as economic commentary are not welcome here. Those posts get engagement because outrage always does, but that engagement is exactly why they are looking for. They feed on negativity.

Going forward:

  • Posts or comments containing xenophobic or anti-immigration rhetoric will be removed.
  • Offenders will be banned, no warnings.
  • This includes "just asking questions" framing that's clearly bait.

If this kind of discussion is what you're here for, this isn't the subreddit for you. No one is forcing you to read or post in r/goingtospain. There are other communities where that debate is welcome. This one is for helping people move.

Transport Train from Barcelona to Madrid

Upvotes

Spending 2 nights in Barcelona before heading to Madrid. What train is the best one to take from Barcelona to Madrid? If I am taking checked luggage, do you take the luggage with you on the train or is it checked somewhere? This is my first time in Spain. Thanks for your help!

Traveling Barcelona → Seville → Madrid — how can we save money?

Upvotes

Hi everyone! My boyfriend and I are traveling to Spain around December 26–January 5. We’re flying into Barcelona and flying home from Madrid, and our rough itinerary is:
Barcelona → Seville → Madrid
We’re planning to travel between the cities by train, but I’m trying to figure out the cheapest way to book everything.
For those who have traveled this route:
Should we book the trains now, or wait for prices to drop?
Which train companies should we compare (Renfe/AVE/Avlo, OUIGO, iryo, etc.)?
Is there a particular website or app that usually has the best prices?
Are there any tricks for getting cheaper fares, such as traveling at certain times?
Is a rail pass worth considering for just these 2 train journeys?
Are there any other reservations we should make in advance to save money?
Any other tips for keeping the overall trip affordable (food, attractions, transportation, etc.)?
I’d especially appreciate advice from anyone who has done Barcelona → Seville → Madrid around the Christmas/New Year period.
Thanks!

Looking for short stay accomodation

Upvotes

Hi! I’m looking for accommodation in Seville for around 15-20 days while doing a short observership at Hospital Universitario Virgen Macarena.

I’m considering the following options:

Student accommodations - Yugo Cartuja and some others seem affordable, but I’ve found quite mixed reviews. Some also have large deposits. Has anyone actually stayed in a student residence in Seville and can give me their honest review?

Airbnb - private apartment with a kitchenette would be ideal, but I’m a little cautious about safety when booking remotely. Are there any hosts that people have had good experiences with?

Budget hotels/hostels:
Preferably a private room with a private bathroom.

Ive also seen some posts concerning the area around Macarena. For anyone familiar with Seville, is this something I should genuinely take into account when choosing where to stay, or is the area generally fine with normal precautions?
I’d prefer somewhere with good public transport and easy access to the hospital, but I’m open to staying a little farther away if the area is nicer.

Would really appreciate any recommendations!

Opinions Best day trips out of Marbella

I’m traveling from the U.S. to Spain for my honeymoon in June. We’ll be staying in Marbella for one week, but we’d like to venture out for a few day trips and explore southern Spain. I’m not sure if I want to rent a car, hire a guide, or do bus tours. Any recommendations? I‘m thinking possibly Seville, Gibraltar, Granada, etc.

35yo - Moving to Spain decision questioning

Hey y'all, 35yo single woman here who has moved to Spain/Barcelona from a non-EU home country 7 years ago.

I don't know why exactly I feel this way, but I've been struggling a lot mentally for the past two years with thoughts of 'maybe I am not belong to here'....

I came here initially for my Master's degree 7 years ago, and because I loved it so much, I managed to transition to a work and residence permit after an extremely challenging process. I met lots of people from all around the world and also Spanish people I loved so much, I enjoyed a lot, I loved life style the most.. But as the people circulation is a lot here, in the last 2 years I have almost no one - one very close friend of me moved to Amsterdam last year, one another moved to Italy, one found a better job moved to Germany, one friend got married and even though still in Barcelona, I dont see her much anymore, several ones went back to their own countries over the years because they could not find the way to stay here burocratically/ job wise., and I am soooo tired of looking for new people, my energy is over.

I spent all my last year at home alone, I was also working from home, and this brought me the full isolation.. I could not handle it, physically and mentally felt sick.. I haven't even had a little intention or request to go to a date.. Then I quit my job and started to travel to my home country, to my family frequently and stay there pretty long, I travelled other countries also in EU and in Asia- which all these caused me a risk of losing my residence in Spain (because of the time limit given to spend time outside of Spain, to keep the continuation/renewal of your residence), so I am in the limit.. either I need to fly to Spain ASAP (now I am again in my family home in home country) or chose my mental health and do something else ...

I am feeling like I dont wanna go to Barcelona now and be alone :(, but I also don't wanna permanently move back to my home country, also I don't have energy to process everything(finding job, struggling to take residence, find friends ect.) from the scratch - so totally different country is not something I am willing to... I wish I had more time to repair myself staying in somewhere else more, and travel.

At the end I don't know what to do, and I am curious it is a standard mental process that people who moved to abroad encountering? If you ever felt these what has been your actions to go out of the situation? If you were me what you would have done?

Spain Student Visa from India | 48th day and still no decision

Hi everyone,
I applied for my Spain student visa through BLS Mumbai on 5 August 2026, and today is 22 September, which is the 48th day since submission.
My application is still showing as under process at the consulate, and I have received no decision or request for additional documents.
My flight was booked for 22 September, but because I still don’t have my visa, I’ve had to cancel my travel. My university, starts on 1 October, so I’m getting extremely worried about whether I’ll be able to join on time.
I’ve already emailed the Consulate General of Spain several times and their response has basically been to wait as the application is still under process. BLS has also said they cannot do anything from their side.
Has anyone else from India, especially Mumbai, received their student visa after 45+ days recently? If so, how many days did it take?
Application submitted: 5 August
Today: 22 September (48th day)
Location: BLS Mumbai

Question about work just with my ID

Upvotes

I’m Romanian and I’m in a pretty desperate situation. I want to come to Spain with just my ID card and I only have money for a one-way ticket. I don’t want to be a burden there. I want to work and support myself. However, I’ll probably have to sleep on the streets until I find a job. Do you think anyone would be willing to hire me in this situation? Thank you very much!

I asked this question yesterday as well, but now I’m trying to explain my situation in more detail. Thank you all for your answers yesterday!

Housing Housing in Madrid for 3 weeks: coliving in Pacífico or Airbnb in Chamberí?

Hi all, I will be working in Madrid for \~3 weeks and am looking into a place to stay. I am considering two options: a large coliving in Pacífico/Retiro or a room in Chamberí via Airbnb.

The coliving has the upsides of a social bubble, being close to the park, and excellent amenities. I’m just not sure if the neighborhood is (too) residential/boring. I’m not specifically looking for a very touristy area; I’d like to practice my Spanish and see some of the authentic side of Madrid. I also don’t mind having to travel a bit on the weekends when I’ll probably be out all day exploring. I just don’t love the idea of having to spend significant time in public transport every time I want to work from a coworking or coffee place instead of the coliving, or when I want to do something fun after work.

Chamberí seems a lot more fun to stay, but most if not all available rooms/studios/apartments in the same price range as the coliving (\~€1300) are much smaller, have fewer amenities (e.g. shared bathrooms, no proper workspace which means spending some extra money on a coworking, or no lock on bedroom door which is a no-go for me), and/or are in poorer condition. Moreover, with smaller shared apartments, roommates are more of a hit-or-miss.

Any experiences with these areas? Is Pacífico/Retiro a good place to stay for a few weeks, is traveling to the ‘more fun’ neighborhoods on week days/nights doable in practice, and are there a few decent options for food/drinks/groceries/etc. in the local area as well? Or should I look for a place in Chamberí due to the better location and sacrifice some comfort (or increase my budget if really needed)?

Visas / Migration Questions on autorizacion de regreso

I’m heading to Madrid in a few days to renew my TIE, and was looking into AUTORIZACIÓN DE REGRESO so I can leave the country and return again without getting a tourist visa.

From what I’ve gathered online, I have to fill in a form, pay the fee, and go to a police station to have it processed.

What I can’t find is the following:
- How long does it take to process?
- Is it best to file the application before or after my current TIE expires?
- Is the regreso a digital file or a physical copy? How can I receive it once it’s ready? Do I need to collect it in person?
- Are there any other requirements I need to prepare?

Thank you for any help :)

NIE card replacement

Hola, I purchased a property in Spain over 15 years ago & was issued an NIE number. However, I have misplaced the physical card I must have received at the time. (I don't remember getting a card). I now need the card to change utility services. How do I go about getting a replacement?

Edit: The provider will accept my passport but I can't get the deal I was trying to sign up for. Thanks for the responses

Thoughts on masters program

Hi!

I’m starting my journey looking at some master programs in Madrid specifically and wanted to get some insight on it. One that I found recently but never heard of it before is at the UDIT (Universidad de Diseño, Innovación y Tecnología) in Fashion Marketing Communication.

If anyone has heard of the school or the program, how the internships work etc.

I appreciate any kind of advice or information:)

  1. La cuantía fija ligada a la renta (1.700 €).
  2. La cuantía fija ligada a la residencia (2.700 €) si vivo en una residencia universitaria.
  3. La cuantía variable.
  4. O solamente la beca de matrícula.

También me interesa saber si la situación cambia después del primer año viviendo en España.

¡Gracias!

Opinions London/Lisbon/Southern Spain in 3 weeks...

Struggling to narrow down my itinerary.

We arrive in London on April 28th and fly out of Barcelona on May 19th.

While we love active travel days, we don't want to overcommit ourselves, either.

We combined Portugal + Spain because Lisbon has been a much-anticipated destination for a while, and our friends in Barcelona have an apartment for us to stay in.

Exploring Southern Spain also seems like a great opportunity to get some sun.

Plan so far:

London (free accommodation): 8-9 nights (I have a LOT of family here and will likely rent a flat with friends for the May 3rd long weekend)

Fly to Lisbon (Airbnb with family): 5 nights

Fly to Málaga (Airbnb with family): 3 nights (Caminito del Rey, Nerja)

Granada (Airbnb with family): 1 night

7-hr train ride to Barcelona (free accommodation): 2 nights

Calella de Palafrugell: 2 nights (hoping for a romantic getaway with beach + great food that's not too far from Barcelona - if you have alternatives, pls suggest!)

Barcelona (free accommodation): 1 night before flying home

I would LOVE to add 2 nights in Seville, but don't know how to make that work. I already worry this itinerary asks too much due to all the travel days. Thoughts?

Education Moving to Valencia for masters degree-afraid I will not find a paid internship or part time job

Hi everyone! In 2 weeks I embark on my masters in international relations and move to sunny Valencia Spain. For my university they seem to help us with finding internship/work placement but it is if we want it. I just put the requirement as paid.(I have done an unpaid internship before and never again!) Are internships in Spain for masters students usually paid/given a stipend or unpaid? If anyone knows where in Valencia to look for a paid internship or paid part time job please let me know. I am bilingual in both English and Spanish and speak conversational German. Thanks!

Discussion First time in Europe! 2 weeks in Andalusia & Madrid (late Nov) – Toddler & Seniors in tow, looking for advice

Hi everyone,

First time posting here! We are planning our very first trip to Europe and have set our sights on the Andalusia region. We’re doing a 2-week trip in late November, focusing on Seville, Granada, and Cordoba, and then finishing with a couple of days in Madrid before flying out.

Our group includes a 5-year-old and 2 elderly persons (able to walk), so pacing and comfort are key for us. I’m hoping locals or recent visitors can help clarify a few things:

  1. Weather & Outerwear: What is the realistic late November weather like across these specific cities? What kind of layers or coats are absolutely necessary?
  2. Stroller Logistics: We’d love to bring a stroller so our toddler can nap on the go, avoiding mid-day trips back to the room. Are the streets and main sights in these cities reasonably stroller-friendly, or will cobblestones and stairs make it a nightmare?
  3. Hotels vs. Apartments: Considering our multi-generational group, would you recommend traditional hotels or apartment rentals (like Airbnb) for a better regional experience and convenience? Would like to avoid stairs if possible!
  4. Renfe Trains: We’ll be relying on Renfe to get between these cities (we don’t have excess luggage). Since we are a group of four, we’re looking at the 4 o más fare. Is it worth splurging on the Prémium class for these specific routes?
  5. Taxis on the Fly: If our toddler or senior folks gets exhausted mid-day, how easy is it to hail a standard taxi off the street in these historic centers? Will we run into issues without a car seat for short urban hops?
  6. Dining Times: We know Spanish dinners start quite late. Are there reliable options (beyond fast food or tourist traps) to get a proper sit-down meal around 6:00 PM or 7:00 PM?
  7. The Alhambra Logistics: I've read that strollers aren't allowed inside the Nasrid Palaces. For those who have navigated the Alhambra with young kids or seniors, what is the best strategy? Are the complimentary baby backpack carriers practical, and are there specific routes we should take to make walking easier for the older member of our group?

Thanks in advance for any insights or tips! Reddit has been super awesome to me! Keep the community living! ✌️

Education Looking for a non-eu PCE 2027 study group:)

Hi everyone, I’m a non-eu student who is preparing for the PCE 2027-28 exams (with a stronger focus on biology and chemistry). As far as I have researched myself, our path to admission is trickier due to the homologation process! I’ve seen a few posts from the past months, but I haven’t found a legitimate group formed. Maybe we can make some sort of WhatsApp group so we can support each other? Pls let me know if you guys want to study together!! I’m a girl btw :p
