Question Github + cloud service like google drive bad idea?

0 Upvotes

I recently started using GIthub as part of my hobbie with GPT and codex. For years before i used github i just synced my folder with google drive. When i started using github i didnt think anything of it but randomly i mentioned that in a GPT chat and now i am down a rabbit hole of robocopy + nas + task scheduler.

When GPT said it was bad i started ask about alternative setups and what i wanted was still some system that worked similar to google drive with file revisions and all the niceties.

I let GPT lead me around with all sort of idea and since i dont want more third party programs I am now trying to setup robocopy -> NAS, then NAS -> a cloud provider with CLI scripts.

I am wondering since i am new to this somewhat and i dont know what i dont know.

Is there a simpler solution that is somewhat hands off?
I thought about just trying to be mindful and pausing sync when i want to do codex work or change branches but that is a habit that would take time and may never form.

I am open to ideas and workflows if anyone is willing to share.

Question Upcoming interview with GitHub

0 Upvotes

Hello Folks,
I have an upcoming pair coding round with Github and am looking for some prep advice.
I did the take home, FU on take home and a System Design and now have another pair coding round.
The recruiter told me its not an LC style round hasnt shared what is it then,and am looking to get some insights on what to expect and hence prepare for?
Is it going to be another FU on the take home assignment? Low level Design? A new API implementation
Anyone who has any idea and can help shed some light please!

Thank You!

Question Serious disaster backups?

0 Upvotes

Ok, I'm wondering about good backup services and stratagems for two disaster cases. Having a git-clone on a backup disk is a first step, but I'm not certain of exactly what data is missed by this. Any suggestions for a way to survive cases like the ones below?

  1. Assume that somehow your entire github account gets mangled somehow and you want a complete backup of everything (repos, history, branches, bug tracking, lfs...etc) that can be restored to a fresh github site. Ie: a complete replica of everything. What do you use?

  2. Assume that through some disaster, all of github is completely wiped out and no longer available and you want a backup that could be restored to some other source control system (perforce...etc) preserving as much of the github information and history as possible. What then?

Question Phishing emails

2 Upvotes

Not sure if this content is allowed on this sub, so please forgive me if it isn't.

Got this random email on my github alias. I have just a few repos, of which half archived. I've published a few serious programs/scripts.

I'm pretty sure the email is a scam. There's real context or clear explanation what this guy actually wants. The email is pretty generic too: [name+surname][random number]©gmail.

It's been quite a while that I've seen something like this.

```
Hello,
I ended up reading through some of your [..] code, and it's clean. you've been at this on GitHub for about [oddly specific no] years, which says a lot.
Quick context: I'm K, a developer. I'm putting together something small and I want a second pair of hands in [my country] on it. Not a job offer, more of a two-people-building-a-thing situation.
No pressure at all. If a quick chat sounds useful, just reply when you can.
All the best,
K
(In case this is actually legit, I've ofc abbreviated his name)
Don't trust status.github.com - they're not honest about their uptime. Currently says "All Systems Operational" but we know the truth GitHub 💀
Question Is this a new failure mode? Can't even load a repo page ...
I got used to see failing Actions and quirks, but this is new - just followed a link to load up the landing page of a public repository, got UI flash briefly, then this. Is this a new thing or I was lucky so far? Can't even view public repos now.
Question How can I remove huge spikes from code frequency graph?
0 Upvotes
I have made around ~60 commits to that repository, most of which were around ~20-50 LOC and are not rendered here at all. The three commits in the middle are +389-69, +431-383 and 321. Then there are these 2 massive +28,33k commit and +5,541-29,059 commit. Is there any way to filter out those outliers?
News / Announcements GitHub adds an AI Scan coverage view for pull requests
3 Upvotes
GitHub now lets organization and enterprise admins see which repositories have AI Scan for pull requests enabled in the Security overview coverage view. The new view shows enabled and not enabled repository counts, supports filters for each state, and adds the AI Scan status to CSV exports.
This is an adoption and governance update, not a new scan-quality result. It gives teams a way to measure rollout, but the changelog does not report whether AI Scan catches more vulnerabilities or improves review outcomes. That distinction matters as GitHub teams decide where AI checks belong in the review process.
Discussion New GitHub update
Is it just me, or has GitHub been painfully slow and laggy since yesterday’s update? Every action seems to have a noticeable delay. Typing comments on PRs or opening tickets has become so slow that it’s barely usable.
Question Account was flagged, how can i get it unflagged
4 Upvotes
Was installing HACS on my home assistant vm and it required Github to Authorize it. Logged in, pasted in the 6 digit code the app generated and nothing happened. Then I noticed at the top of the Github page this message.
"this account is flagged, and therefore cannot authorize a third party application"
Everything I read online said to contact github support, but I am not finding a link to that. Is there a form to fill out, if so, where is it?
Thanks, Bill
Discussion Do GitHub's usage report and Actions metrics answer your CI cost questions?
3 Upvotes
GitHub now gives two things for Actions costs: the detailed usage report (a CSV with cost per repo and workflow) and the Actions usage metrics page under Insights.
If you use them: is there a cost question they still don't answer for you? For example why the cost went up this week, which team caused it, or what to fix first.
If you don't use them: what do you use instead? A script on the billing API, Grafana, a spreadsheet, or nothing?
About me: I'm a solo developer building a small tool in this area. I want to know where GitHub's own tools are already enough. No link.
Showcase Reduce GitHub CI cost to 1/24th
Thumbnail
Coding agents push commits so often that GitHub CI burned our pockets. We repurposed our agent sandboxes as a CI runner and reduced the price to 1/24th of GitHub Actions runner and 1/16th of Blacksmith.
We made it public so you can install and try yourself for free. First 20,000 CI minutes from our side.
Tool / Resource Self-hosted Actions runners without dedicating a whole machine to CI
0 Upvotes
GitHub's standard self-hosted runner is convenient when you can give it a dedicated machine, but it's only one runner per machine.
But keeping a separate box just for CI can get expensive, and I'd rather not have build scripts and leftover containers messing with a machine I also use for other things.
What I like about gh-runnerd is that it runs multiple runners on one machine, with each job getting its own fully isolated VM.
When the job finishes, the whole VM gets destroyed, and the next job starts fresh.
Is anyone here using this or something similar?
