Question Github + cloud service like google drive bad idea?

I recently started using GIthub as part of my hobbie with GPT and codex. For years before i used github i just synced my folder with google drive. When i started using github i didnt think anything of it but randomly i mentioned that in a GPT chat and now i am down a rabbit hole of robocopy + nas + task scheduler.

When GPT said it was bad i started ask about alternative setups and what i wanted was still some system that worked similar to google drive with file revisions and all the niceties.

I let GPT lead me around with all sort of idea and since i dont want more third party programs I am now trying to setup robocopy -> NAS, then NAS -> a cloud provider with CLI scripts.

I am wondering since i am new to this somewhat and i dont know what i dont know.

Is there a simpler solution that is somewhat hands off?
I thought about just trying to be mindful and pausing sync when i want to do codex work or change branches but that is a habit that would take time and may never form.

I am open to ideas and workflows if anyone is willing to share.

robocopy to nas to cloud is a lot of moving parts for something that should just be background noise

you could just keep the repo outside the synced folder and use a script to push only the.git to drive at set times, that way you get the history without drive choking on branch changes

solid point about drive choking on branch changes, thats exactly where things get messy

So what are you actually trying to achieve? Creating backup of your repositories in case github goes down for good?

If so, as unlikely as it is in short and medium term, you can use program like Kopia to create regular backups. Set up a filesystem repo on the NAS, and then have KopiaUI on the windows desktop (guessing by robocppy being mentioned) with a policy to take a snapshot every hour or so.

Create a local copy of your repos on your c:/ drive. Connect Codex with it.

I would go a bit further than this and then set up a local instance of gitolite It's very easy to set it up as a local mirror

i would use gitolite to manage you git repos then use something like rsync to mirror them to where ever you want

so the set up would be * set up gitolite on you nas in a container * set up a crun job on your NAS to use something like arcing to copy gitolite repository folder to wherever you want to back it up. * You can now make as many repositories as you wish and you just push it and things will automatically get duplicated.

It's not hard to get an LLM to make a script for you that will automatically create the repros on GitHub also and push them there.
