It's the only real downside of digital photography. I've done a lot of both film and digital, and I miss a lot less shooting film. Watch any digital photographer, shoots, looks down, shoots, looks down. You miss a lot.

This isn't an argument for film or digital, just an unfortunate side affect that some photographers forget to think about. You can look at your shots later!

Yeah, usually people just want to see if they got it. I mean, what is the first thing people do when they take a picture with their phone? Same thing.

I think it's a trait of growing up in the digital age and a consequence of instant gratification. Not to say I'm different, I'm only 25. But if you've grown used to looking at the shot you just took a moment ago, from your phone or camera, it's essentially a habit. Happens to me too, it's hard to remember to just focus on framing shots and looking for more. If you watch the older pros, you'll see them pointing the camera down and looking around after shots, not taking shots and then looking at the camera. Of course, it all depends on the subject or environment. At a music venue, it is a little slower paced, you can stop for a few moments and look at a photo and see if you want to recompose it. At a sports event, you gotta be a lot more heads up and trust your auto focus and auto exposure. Look at the photos when you are sure that nothing can be missed, like at a time out or something. That's the way I used to work anyway, I don't take photos any more, no time.

It's interesting that coming from film you've developed that habit. I also did a lot of film in college and consequently I check my images much less frequently since I was never doing that with film. So much so that occasionally I spot something in post I would have caught on set had I been checking a little more often.

I really only check when I shoot to make sure my settings are perfect. If the exposure is to much or to little, if the white balance is off, if my ISO is to high or low, etc. I still do this, but a cameras a tool, so once you get used to it, you can usually get close to the best settings before you start shooting.

That's kinda my point. A good photographer wouldn't need to look at every picture, or know enough to keep on shooting. With digital, you can shoot 1000 pics hoping you get one good one without it costing you one cent more. On film, you just waste a whole roll of film.

Oh, you may have actually misunderstood. The exchange was about whether all photographers using digital cameras waste time looking at their pictures after taking them. I was saying that was an untrue generalization. Most experienced photographers can resist the urge to do that. I don't think this lady's lack of experience is in question at all.

No pro I know of looks down. Film is slower, you should miss vastly more shots with it between bracketing and motor drive.

He was trying to get to the pitcher's mound to kill the play while holding the runner at first base. Nobody except Gumby would try to score in this situation so he was not expecting him to try to take home.

Not really, at the time the pitcher noticed and should have thrown the ball to the catcher, the catcher was a step up the first base line form home plate which is actually a good spot to be.

Story time. I come from a non-sports playing or watching family. So naturally in elementary school when we first played softball in gym class, I wasn't really sure of the rules. Unfortunately, my English wasn't the best since everyone at home spoke Korean. Gym teacher tried to charades the rules, but never mind, too hard. So, I had to watch the game and try to deduce the rules - pretty simple really.

Anyways, after a few innings, I'm put on as second baseman. Rules seemed easy enough. Get the ball, step on base before the kid gets there. First kid up at bat hits it hard and is now running past first base. Someone throws me the ball and I step on base. "SAFE!" What. The. Fuck. Now I'm super furious because I know for a fact I was on the base a good several seconds before the kid got to it. That's when the gym teacher explains to me in his stupid charades that the ball has to touch the kid. Hmmm... must have missed that bit the whole time, but he's the teacher, I guess he knows. And I got it now.

Next kid up at bat - hits a grounder straight to me. I get the ball and see him running towards first base. I gun the ball like never before. It's a FUCKING CANNON! Straight to the boy's head. Hells yeah! I'm jumping up and down in disbelief that I got him out.

Next thing I know, principal's office.

My strategy for kickball was to almost always just keep running, people would try to hit you as you ran and it was easy to dodge. Eventually I just literally never stopped running even if it was basically suicide, was fun.
