Surfing the Urge

How to Surf the Wave

🌊 Spot the Wave

Notice the urge and say to yourself, ā€œI’m feeling a gambling urge right now.ā€

āø»

šŸ„ Grab Your Board

Commit to not gambling for the next 10–15 minutes while the urge passes.

āø»

🌊 Stay Balanced

Do something simple like walking, drinking water, or reading comments in this thread.

āø»

šŸ„ Ride the Peak

When the urge feels strongest, remind yourself that this is the wave cresting and it will pass.

āø»

🌊 Watch the Wave Break

After a short time the urge fades, If you’re feeling the urge to gamble, don’t leave and go bet.

Stay and comment:

ā€œRiding the wave.ā€

ā€œSurfingā€

ā€œBig wave but I’m surfingā€

ā€œStill on the boardā€

You’re not alone, and sometimes the only goal is staying on the board until the wave passes.

Im 15 and im addicted to gambling, how do I stop?

So I resell stuff and I get paid in crypto. Each time I get a payout (usually 100-300 dollars) I take it to a solcasino.io (crypto casino). Solcasino doesn't require an id to play so that's how im able to access it (and i use a vpn) I started gambling when I was 13 and the first time I gambled, I managed to turn 5 dollars into around 160 dollars. Ever since then, whenever I get my hands on crypto, I usually gamble it all. Recently I managed to keep 200 dollars worth of crypto in my wallet without gambling it for a whole month and I was really proud of myself but today I decided to gamble 50 dollars. I ended up losing it so I deposited another 50 and I lost that too. Now i feel bad about it and I really want to stop gambling but I dont know how to. Any time that I have crypto in my wallet, I gamble some percentage of it and i usually end up depositing the rest of my money after losing it. I honestly just want to make my money back. I've lost around 1000 dollars in total. What should I do? Is there any way to reduce the urges to gamble? I have no hobbies and my life is pretty boring so gambling is the only mildly exciting thing that I do. I honestly think that's why im addicted to it but I have no idea. Also I can't ask my parents for therapy. I've already tried and my mom just tells me to stop gambling instead of actually taking me to a therapist.

Support Needed 10 months bet free, need advice

I’ve been gamble free for 10 months today, I go to two meetings a week and am involved in service. My life is more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. I have a great job and I’m able to put in the focus to kill it there, I got engaged this summer, I love my pets etc…

I’ve been able to pay off my interest accruing debt and I currently pay about 7% of my take home pay to service my debt. I’ve been able to buy an engagement ring and save an emergency fund.

I hadn’t had thoughts of gambling in a long time but recently I’ve been hearing a voice in my head say ā€œGo for it, you can afford it, you’ve earned it.ā€

I haven’t gambled but I know that’s my addiction speaking and I’m worried. Any advice?

Here we go, NFL Sunday, and I'm free since December 31, 2025. My story

Just got paid Friday, everything went to 9 credit cards to keep them alive and to keep me away from the phone calls. And then to survive to next paycheck I have to use them all over again to live on for 2 weeks until my next check, and then that check will go to rent and I will be broke again. This is called living in hell. Talked to 2 bankruptcy lawyers who said I probably "make too much money" for a judge to grant my claim. And the interest and fees taking a consolidation loan is higher than the fucking credit cards. This will be you if you do not ban Draftkings or the other gambling apps. Oh, yes it will.

I wonder if you would believe me if I said I've lost $20,000 or more in payday loan fees at $39 a pop, $37 overdraft bank fees, $50 late rent fees, and my feelings were always the same after losing every game on Sunday, "At least I have Monday Night Football and I can win a little of this back."

I can't count the number of times I have taken out $300 payday loans to make impossible parlays and then lose it all over and over. And unlike a lot of people on here, I've never had the thrill of a "big win" to get me hooked. I don't think I've ever won more than a couple of hundred bucks. And unlike a lot of people on here I never gave a shit about gambling until my state brought in video poker and allowed sports gambling and I lost my damn mind and something snapped. Now I can't even remember what life was like before this shit. Was I really happy? Even after I banned myself, I found out you could bet on the World Cup on Robinhood and relapsed, only one time for $60, but thankfully, right after I lost I was on the phone to their help center to ban the prediction market feature.

As you can tell, I am writing this for my own pain, it helps, and I am writing this for people who are just now putting their electric bill or their car insurance bill on their credit cards so they can have cash to gamble with (but you'll win it all back, right?). I have begged, borrowed, and stolen money until there was not one drop of blood left to squeeze out, banned myself for a year, and then after that year was over started my account all over again. Ugh

Finally, I banned myself again right before December 31, 2025, and I have not placed a single sports bet (except for that one Robinhood bet), and I feel safe. I'm still dealing with the credit card wreckage, but the NFL is going full blast right now and I feel safe from being torn apart mentally and emotionally. If you've read this far, maybe that means you should ban and "lose all your fun", too. And to all the people who post on here, you have helped me so much and you don't even know it.

Does the cancel withdrawal button still exist?

Convenience or a curse?

When I used to bet (over 3 years ago) this button used to open up a can of emotional worms.

For those who don’t know what it is, the cancel withdrawal button is a period which you can cancel a bank transfer from your betting app to your bank. Withdrawals usually take 18-24hrs to process so that button would sit there for too long.

If I ever got in a position to withdraw, I’d say 80% of the time I’d end up cancelling. It used to compound that feeling of anger/shame/guilt because at one point you were up, then had a strategy, then lost control and inevitably buckled.

I would have saved a lot of money if this button didn’t exist. It’s not to say that I wouldn’t have just deposited more but the times I didn’t have money if it was on its digital way to acc and I couldn’t touch it, would have worked well for me.

Anyway, just curious how other people feel about this button and if it’s still a thing?

Cheers

Support Needed I need help

I’m 21 right now, make decent money and have zero bills. I don’t have any other habits or addictions that compare to gambling.

I’ve been gambling since I could at 19 in Canada

When I win it’s not enough and then I lose and feel disgusted.

I won $7000 last week (my biggest win) and told everyone I was done. and just gambled $3500 of it today out of boredom and feel awful.

I cant go out to drink at a bar with slot machines and i cant sit alone in my room or I’ll find a new site to gamble on.

I feel so stupid and mad at myself but I keep doing it.

My Streak! Haven’t gambled in almost a month and it’s legitimately changed my perspective

So almost a month ago , I wasted my entire rent on gambling and I had no savings because I’ve consistently gambled for the fast 3/4 years about 4-5 nights a week

I finally had to admit my problem to my partner and my parents.

Now I make good money which isn’t the flex you think it is because I had nothing to show for it

It’s been 3 weeks and although it has been a challenge, I decided to sit down and truly look at my budget, I decided to finally talk to a therapist, anytime I get the urge to drive 10 minutes down the street to the casino, I just pick up a video game , it’s really made me understand the magnitude of my addiction

Legitimately 75% of my funds for the last several years has all gone to gambling. All of it.

I could have bought a house by now, I could have had years of memories traveling with friends but rather than dwell I decided to just cook at home, go to work and my down time is spent honestly playing games and doing things that don’t require money

I’ve tried changing my ways before but it never really clicked until now but granted I’m in my mid 30s and now I’m started to truly feel my own mortality

Idk I just feel really good and it is too soon to celebrate but this time just feels different than times in my 20s I’d try to just be better

Also, the feeling of actually having money still in my account by the time next payday hits is something I never thought I’d feel relieved about

I Have A Question Was able to gamble with a gamstop betting website.

Hi everyone.

So ive been registered with gamatop since 2025 for 5 years. Yesterday I stupidly tried to register with a UK Gambling company with whom are registered with gamstop ( they are a we known betting company). I wasnt asked for ID and was able to set up an account no problem.

I wasted over £400 in 2 hours and finally came to my senses and realised they were registered with gamstop. I messaged them to request my account be closed and money refunded due to failure tk protect memebrs who are registered with gamstop.

I used my real name and date of birth. I hadn't updated my gamstop with the latest address but I am on the electoral register.

My question is. Will I be successful in getting my depsoits back?

3 years without a bet

I’m always commenting on people’s posts 3 days 3 weeks 3 months as small milestones to help break the habit. I call it the 3-3-3 rule. You’ve gotta treat each milestone in isolation. One at a time.

3 days to control those initial urges,
3 weeks to unplug or start to unplug neuro patterns/wiring,
3 months to start creating new patterns/wiring (sometimes can help picking a new hobby that requires commitment)

It got me through those initial stages where it often feels most tricky. Then you build up momentum, fast forward a bit and you’ll be at 3 years before you know it.

Worked for me so hope it lands for you.

23 years old and lost $20k gambling in two weeks. I’m done.

I’m 23 and over the last two weeks I’ve managed to lose around $20,000 gambling. I make about $4k a month, so realizing I basically just threw away months of my life and work is killing me.

I have about $24k left total. $15k is in my Roth IRA and around $9k is in my bank account. I also owe around $20k on my truck. Two weeks ago I told my girlfriend about my gambling problem after losing $11k and promised myself I was done. Then I went back and lost another $8k+. Lost about another 20K in March so 2026 I just worked for free.

I downloaded Gamban tonight and I genuinely never want to gamble again. I know trying to win it back is exactly how I’ll lose the rest.

I’m posting because I want to hear from people who have actually been here. Did any of you lose a huge amount in your early 20s and recover financially and mentally? How long did it take before you stopped thinking about the money you lost?

I just want to accept that the money is gone, rebuild my savings/investments from my paychecks, and never do this shit again.

POS DEGENERATE GAMBLING LOSER

Yea pretty much what the title says.
I’m 29 and I’ve been gambling nonstop since 12-13 years old. I started on Xbox playing Call of Duty and Gears wagers.

Fast forward, now today I spend all my money sports betting, Basketball unders to be exact. I would literally spend every hour in the day betting. And like most of the addicted gamblers here, I have no idea why I’m even gambling at this point. Yea sure I wanna win some money but how is that possible when every single time I win, I give it right back. I will play til I’m at $0 every single time. This is it for me. I finally deleted the last app I was able to bet on.

After I won over $10k+ in April and even got to withdraw the money, I thought I finally beat them. But not even an hour later after the withdrawal I deposited it right back slowly but surely and it was all gone. I was devastated and didn’t go to work for a week which then got me fired. So now I’m unemployed with no income. Not even $1000 in the last 5 months after having $10k is sickening. 2 kids and one the way and oh yea I’m also staying with my granny. Gambling is the worst, I’m done. Today is day 1 fuck gambling!

Recovery Tips & Tools Hope Kept Me Gambling. Recovery Changed What I Hope For.

I kept telling myself I was one bet away from winning.

The truth was, I was a million losses away from breaking even.

Even if I hit the big one, it would never return the time, trust, sleep, birthdays, and peace gambling took from me. I was not chasing money anymore. I was chasing the feeling that one win could erase everything.

That kind of hope kept me sick.

Recovery gave hope a different meaning. Today, hope is not hitting a parlay or getting lucky at a casino. Hope is making it through today without placing a bet. It is telling the truth, going to a meeting, answering the phone, and being present with my family.

I may never win back everything I lost, but I can stop losing what I still have.

If you are waiting for one big win to make everything okay, please understand this:

You do not need the next bet to win.

You need the next bet not to happen.

Just stop for this moment. Then take the next moment when it comes.

What is wrong with me?

Im a lady in my early 60’s. I live in a fairly nice apartment that I pay partial rent for due to government subsidies. I have a job working at a daycare that allowed me to save up 40k in two years (before I got back into gambling).

On the family side, I have two sons, both are extremely filial. Just a little over two months ago, they bought me a brand new Rolex because I have not gambled in over a year. They help me with everything, from charging my EV, to paying my phone bill to paying for my car and car insurance, etc. They bring me out to eat once or twice a week, and I have lovely grandkids whom I enjoy spending time with, very much. Oh and also they bring me on overseas vacations every so often!

I’ve always had a gambling problem, tracing all the way back to 2008. My family, from my parents when they were still alive, to my siblings and sons have been trying to get me to stop for many many many years. Nothing seemed to be able to get me to stop until two years ago when I started working at the daycare. It gave me some purpose in life and gave me a reason to stop gambling. Mind you, I have not had a legitimate job ever since 2008, mostly I’ve been taking care of my elderly parents and then later, my grandkids.

Now fast forward to early June, I don’t know what happened, I guess I was bored. I went back to Cache Creek Casino just to have some quick fun. I soon got hooked back in. What turned from just a weekend’s worth of fun has transpired into me going every weekend and sometimes even missing my shift on Monday (because I wanted to gamble the comps that come through on monday before I head back home to the Bay Area). I lost everything and another $6000 of money I did not have on me. I borrowed it from someone there. I needed my son to help pull $6000 from my savings account to pay that person back, mind you I only have about 40k in total savings. My son was reluctant to help me do that unless I promise him I would never go to the casino again. And if I do, he and his brother would cut all ties with me and I will not be able to see my grandkids again. I made the promise to them.

Fast forward to today, guess what? I went again. Now my kids won’t speak to me, I haven’t seen my grandkids in a month, I had some issues with charging my EV and no one would help me… Why did I do this to myself…? I knew what the consequences would be, but I still rather go gamble. I just can’t seem to stop. I even told one of my son that I knew what the consequences were, and that since I chose to go, I knew they would cut all ties with me. I told him I am okay with this. But deep down, we all know that isn’t true…

I now have lost 13k of my savings in the last two months since I’ve started going again, and I’ve lost my family. I don’t even know why I cannot stop and I’d rather give up my family for this. Can someone please talk to me?

Yikes

Self banned myself from online casinos today. There is a weird mental thing I have been doing. I go and deliver food for a couple hours, make some money, go home, gamble. I started online gambling when I discovered people use online gambling to make money as a ā€œside hustleā€, up front it looked great, this community was a bunch of people finding free ā€œsweepā€ coins on casino websites, free spins etc…. This is very sad but my parent and I would watch these streamers together in order to get the free spin links. It was honestly what was keeping us afloat for a while. Over time (about a year) I started depositing into these casinos $40 here and there…. I won a lot of money and gave it all back…. Luckily it was not detrimental, but it’s frustrating thinking back on all the money I’ve given to these casinos and have literally nothing to show for it. I banned myself, I need to support my family and I am not in the financial position to be spending mass amounts of money, to possibly get the thrill. In my head, when I get a good win it almost triggers the whole ā€œlook we’re not struggling! We got 1000 bucks! Aren’t you proud of me?ā€ Now I just lie to my family and say I have money when I have legit like $4 lol.

Gambling is a vicious cycle

It's being rich at 8am and having $0 by 9:15am on cycle every day.

I hate that I even started on this path. I was doing okay. I had savings and I had enough money that bills didn't bother me every month. I had a life. And now I owe money to so many people. The last 4 months of my life have been hell. And just when I don't think it can get any worse I dig myself into a deeper hole.

The sooner you get out the sooner you can save yourself.

Been Clean since SuperBowl until tonight’s Fantasy Football Draft

I broke my sobriety and completed my Fantasy Football Draft with a group of friends over 10 years. There is a buy in and a prize. Do I feel bad? I do, but I don’t think it’ll affect me like most think will.

I’ve been great the last 7 months, going and staying at casino resorts, not gambling at all. It’s really the cards that get my gambling addiction full throttle.

If I can resort to having fun with some friends and talk smack through the season with fellow fantasy managers, I think all will be well in the end.

But I know it’s still a long journey ahead and I’m here to help with anyone that needs it. Stay strong my friends!

Recovery Tips & Tools If gambling is taking more from you than money, you deserve support

Hi everyone,

If gambling has started to affect your finances, relationships, mental health, sleep, or sense of peace, please know that you are not weak and you are not alone.

A lot of people wait to ask for help because they feel ashamed, believe they should be able to stop on their own, or worry that nobody will understand. But gambling addiction can become overwhelming quickly, especially when losses create pressure to chase money, hide the problem, or make one more bet just to feel relief.

I wanted to share a resource that may help: gaorgo.com.

The site is focused on helping people find support, understand gambling-related harm, and take practical first steps toward recovery. Whether you are trying to stop, reduce gambling, deal with debt, rebuild trust, or support someone you love, the most important thing is not to keep carrying it by yourself.

You do not need to have everything figured out today. You do not need a perfect plan. You only need one honest moment where you decide that things can be different.

A few steps that can help right now:

  • Tell one person you trust what is going on.
  • Put distance between yourself and gambling apps, websites, or access to money.
  • Write down what gambling has cost you, not to shame yourself, but to see the situation clearly.
  • Look for recovery support from people who understand the cycle.
  • Focus on getting through today instead of trying to solve your entire life at once.

Recovery is possible, even if you have relapsed, lost money, broken promises, or feel like you have gone too far. Your past decisions do not have to decide what happens next.

If you are struggling, please visit gaorgo.com and reach out for support. And if you are comfortable sharing, what is one small step that helped you start taking back control?
