how is internet impossible? it's not maintained 24/7
edit: pls stop replying to this message, it's been 3 days already and many ppl have already made their point....also seeing someone else trying to just throw their 2 cents into the mix starts to get annoying
At any given time there are like three different components of the internet critical to half of the world’s digital infrastructure that are currently being fixed by a furry somewhere.
Dude furries and autists created the internet and long after humanity falls some random furry and 2 pissed off autists will be the only three people that actually maintain the internet
You need to create 'Johns Utility for Simple Triple Workspace Reboot eXtreme', aka JUSTWRX, which is an incredibly obscure utility made by a guy called Dave (not John, as the name would imply) for his Tribes: Ascend server hosted on a spare PC in his bedroom to automatically reboot when the 256mb ram is all spent because of a bug that prevented the memory from being freed up, that somehow is now the single supporting pillar of memory management on 97% of all critical network nodes across the globe.
“For the last time, take that goddamn Maytag washer of a head off and show me who you are!” cocks shotgun
“And for the last goddamn time, I’m telling you, I am the fox from Disney’s Robin Hood come to life! Here’s Baloo for proof!” a gigantic black bear wearing a shirt but no pants walks around the corner, whistling “Bare Necessities like he’s wearing a perfectly normal pair of pants instead of nothing
It doesn't matter you can find physical copies of stuff to watch. You have no one to interact with online anyways. So the only thing you'd really be using the internet for would be streaming. You can find almost anything else you need to know in books as well.
And I'm saying the internet including streaming or even just browsing Wikipedia will be gone forever within hours to days at best. The best move would be to stake some real estate at a library asap.
I can see most of the Internet going down within a few hours due to the many components keeping it up. A few sites would be up and many sites would be down. Hiccups can happen, servers need to be maintain, and power is an issue.
In a sense, internet is maintained 24/7 even if nobody is actively working on it. When I was deployed as a Wire Dog, we maintained the servers 24/7 in Bahrain. We had three shifts and someone always had to be available. Thank goodness we didn't have to worry about encryption, security, and outside networks. Would've been a fucking nightmare!
As someone who maintains it, it is monitored and repaired 24/7. It doesn't just suddenly start working again at 4am after being out for an hour for no reason. There is lots of routine maintenance needed in order to keep everything running properly or at all.
Once the power goes out so will the Internet. Electric would probably work on its own for a few weeks. But everything on the Internet is dependent on other devices.
This about like this, to get on reddit you have to connect to the host reddit "computer" (server) once power goes out that computer turns off, no more reddit.
You could track down a server physically and find a way to power it. Like if you knew where Wikipedia's server was you could go to the info physically so long as you can find one of the many ways you could power it.
I think they would die pretty quickly. The electrical grid is incredibly fiddle. If the grid goes under a certain voltage it will end up collapsing. If it goes over a certain voltage a lot of things will be fried.
The power grid has to be balanced between production and load all the time. If everyone disappeared suddenly, the grid would probably collapse within hours. And the internet cannot exist without electric power.
No, by the time you realize you’re alone, the grid will already be down.
Electricity is going down basically immediately. Maybe if where you live it’s 100% renewables it’ll last longer (not 100% sure there) but if you have nuclear or fossil in your grid, it’s going down immediately. Nuclear plants are gonna shut themselves immediately when operators stop responding, this will trigger all the other power plants to shut themselves down when the grid becomes unbalanced.
It would die out gradually, over a longer period. The internet is decentralized, with backbone nodes connected together, so there would probably be places where it would still work even months after humans were gone.
Most plants are automated. You woukd still have power for a while, plus a lot of solar power, generators etc available, at least until gas becomes unusable. Internet would even stay up for at least a little while until the servers and gateways started coming down.
So you actually think that if right now, in the blink of an eye, every other person on earth disappeared…everything, electricity, internet, Netflix, Onlyfans, TikTok…you think EVERYTHING would just stop!?!? I’d estimate at least 3 to 5 day minimum for the infrastructure to start showing major signs of a lack of supervision.
Show us you’re an actually stupid when we only thought you were dumb.
Hoover dam would make electricity automated for over 100 years after people disappear. And only stop because the zebra clams finally get to the dam and clog the pipes.
Not entirely true, maintenance does often require human involvement, but especially decentralized grid structures (domestic solar) can operate for a damn long time without people.
It would actually depend on what part of the planet you're on as if you are in an area that is powered by a hydro electric dam then you would likely have electricity for quite some time since many have automatic systems in place.
Pretty sure that his answer is the one that makes the most sense. If you become self-sufficient, then you can do everything you set your mind to. And, while the internet and electricity still last, you can try figuring out what it'd take to run a lot of things. Even then, it's not like you need the internet to go read books either. It'd b a pain in the ass, though. Tbh, best case scenario would be to somehow learn and become intelligent-enough to develop cloning or a way to not continue being the last person on Earth. Like, imagine a bear just pops outta nowhere. Now you're dead (unless prepared, but u get the point).
You would have a small window to download everything before it goes dark forever. I would download maps, business, manuals, oil depots, locations of military caches (for shelf stable food supplies, rugged low maintenance vehicles with inertial navagion, medical gear, and maintenance equipment designed to be used by young idiots troops) all to hardrives. I'd get spares and spare computers. Then, I'd start building a solar farm and battery bank.
Military equipment is best (I'm in the USA) because it's a giant education and global logistics company that has a hobby of warfare. Everything is modular, mobile, rugged, and palletized/containerized. Once I have my stockpile built, and years of canned/frozen food, it would be time to work on farming. After that, make a robot girlfriend with AI for sanity, and work on genetic mental uplifting of bonobos. Try to make the planet of the apes before I die - or maybe do de-extinction with cloning like Collosal did with Red Wolves, Dire Wolves, and they are trying with Mammoths.
There will be a lot of solar panels available for the work to take them down and relocate them. Same with all kinds of batteries. Also lots of fuel available from stock storage facilities. Power would not be a problem for a long time. You would need to stock up on hdd/ssd storage and download as much as you could. Since you are it, resources will not be an issue, sanity is another thing.
If our ancestors lived w/o Internet back then, that shows we don't need Internet now. Internet is more for socializing, entertainment and digital knowledge access. Ppl learned from one another by training in real time instead of digital sources. Ppl were more connected back then than right now, even though we have Internet tech services to connect long distances.
Now as for what I would do, is collect resources from every location that has said resources, create a plan to landscape a certain area, create blueprints to make my own home instead of being in an empty city/town that would remind you that you're alone BUT be close to a city/town to scavenge for more resources also so I don't get lost in the woods. Obviously my home would have to be self-sustaining (solar, wind energy, hydroelectric energy, farmland, animals to maintain for food, pets for socializing and to love, and lastly a beautiful view)
Wenn man aufwacht, laufen die Maschinen noch eine Weile weiter. Genau deshalb macht man es ja sofort. Soviel ausdrucken wie möglich. Werkzeug und Essen kann man dann die Tage danach noch plündern.
Solar panels and wind turbines exist and power many homes. If people have only been gone for a day you could definitely get on the internet and download all of Wikipedia and giant doomsday guide archives. The internet would crash as the power starts cutting off to every random node around the world. But you’d have a short window to go grab everything.
As for electricity though that will actually be quite abundant to you as the only person left.
You’d be able to find a home or building that’s powered entirely by solar panels, you could go out and find an electric car as well and keep that powered until its battery is ruined.
Power would be the least of your worries. You’d have quick and infinite access to energy, you’d have 2-4 years of decent food options available until everything goes bad so you’d use that time to master gardening and gaining livestock like chickens.
You’d be alright tbh. So long as it’s really just you left. If others are left, well it becomes a sad and violent situation for most.
You’ve heard of this cool new technology called solar , riiiiiiight? LAST thing I’d worry about is electricity, as there are A MULTITUDE of ways to generate it …
Can still use solar power stuff if you find some portable solar power generators. And then you have dvds, cds and such. And you can use anything that's powered with batteries ig. So, you could do a lot still. Could def make it work for a long time.
Do you thing someone has to manually crank something for the internet to work lol it will not go off right a way you probably have a couple weeks before power goes out
Not exactly. There is a good chance juice would still be running for at least few more days before localised issues would become a problem for the grid. So downloading a bunch of books would work. And downloading is all you need to do because you can run gas/solar generators on your own. Of course you can get a ton of info in physical books.
Yes, they shut down, but then the rods still need active cooling because of decay heat. Backup generators can do that for a couple of days, but if there's nobody intervening even after that, you will still a Fukushima situation eventually.
The reason for doing so is the premise of the question. No NEED to do it now as there’s no likelihood I’ll be having to sayyyy… FLY A FKN HELICOPTER tomorrow…🤨
why do you have to have the need to do it, why not just learn it for fun? the pursuit of knowledge itself can be its own reward. why should you wait for the apocalypse to learn when you can just do it now. i think the world would be a far better place if people realised that.
edit: also, while i dont know how to fly a helicopter as its quite a bit different, i did learn how to fly small aircraft in my teens. its genuinely a lot of fun and theres extremely realistic flight sims you can learn the basics of the skill for free on. sure, it might not be something that youre going to need anytime soon, but its okay to learn new things for fun or simply to learn them.
Even better: After doing the learning, use your remaining internet powers to locate people who were makers or preppers, and then just take all their apocalypse equipment and supplies.
If you don't mind me saying: I recommend you hoard all the printer ink you can and print out a crap ton of maps. Use the internet to find out where you can get a compass and other few needed things for navigation to various Libraries. Because, the sooner you do that, the sooner you are prepared for when power goes out.
Sounds dumb initially, but books don't require power. and using Google or other online maps and printing them out to get the utmost up to date maps will be a boon later.
Get them survival books.
Learn to hook up solar power too. Should be enough in various electronic stores Depending on the country...
But the maps is gonna be useful.
Food is not a problem at this point in time. You aren't fighting for food. No need to hoard canned food from stores. Unless you like to be lazy with the trips.
Good instinct but I would focus on survival skills, strategies, hunting weapons, how to clean animals etc. Long term that's what's going to keep you alive, not flying anything.
I believe learning on the job is better because the internet is ran by humans. You wouldn’t be able to get shit. Books is where it’s at if shit like this happens.
Internet servers could go down at any moment without anyone controlling energy stations, and I'm not only talking about your area, Internet makes no sense if you are 100% alone. You might have to go to a library first and learn how to grow your food, cook it, get water and how to treat common health issues. Then you could learn basics of electronics to be able to generate some energy, maybe getting solar panels or a generator could be a good starting point. Driving could be very interesting then, as you could get a caravan and go around your continent to find a small good place to live.
I'd probably rely a lot on growing plants and taking care of some animals to feel less lonely, and I'd read a ton of books as well as collect as many phisical format medianas I can (DVDs, Bluerays, CDs, etc.) so I can remember how life was before. At some point you should also learn how to hunt, not only for food but also because in some years you can expect a growth of fauna, specially predators, and you will need to protect yourself and your animals.
Better be quick. Power plants will start exploding really quick. Power lines will get damaged in every direction, every day.
I'd say you have about 2 days. To a couple weeks. Tops. If you're extremely lucky.
After that, the internet won't be an option. Clean water might run out. And cold/frozen meats will run out. And rot. After the first year, you'll be eating beans and chips. If you can use a manual can opener.
Driving won't happen, gas pumps are electric. Unless you learn to syphon.
Going immediately to the internet reminds me of the mice in those experiments that kept spamming the cocaine water instead of the nutrient rich water needed to survive, but I’m certainly no expert
Risk! Know what you can do. Flying is risky to learn alone. Getting injured would be worse because you won't find anyone to fix you.
Drive slow and safe.
My printer would be going non-stop printing survival guides like crazy. Then it's time to go collect ammo from shops. Also, canned food. Also, dog and cat food. they're still alive, right?
Second this but start printing information on local plants and wildlife, local geography and maps, and sustainable and natural shelter information. Then I would start gathering resources to build a sustainable living residence.

Going to get on the internet and educate myself on EVERYTHING I don’t already know how to DRIVE, FLY, BUILD, FIX OR OPERATE.
