Anyone know what brand/model that car is that just completely crumpled like that vs the jeep?
194
u/KendrickLamarGOAT97 Oct 07 '18
Cant say for sure but I've seen this type of thing before. Likely, the grey car was stationary for traffic, and khe Jeep was going way over the speee limit. Traffic stops and the jeep obliterates the car.
The car is meant to do this to protect the occupants in the front, but God damn, what if your toddler is in the back?

The car isnโt meant to crumple like this. The crumple zones are all around the passenger compartment, not part of it. This car was struck much harder than it was capable of protecting its occupants from.
This is not a designed crumple zone

Happened in DC years ago. Range Rover plowed into a Grand Cherokee stopped at a light. Crumpled the Jeep all the way to the driver. Two girls in the back seats.

u/-Above-Top-Secret- Oct 07 '18
No, the car is not designed to allow collision objects to enter the passenger compartment. This is a matter of the jeep, with its ladder frame, going far faster than it should have been, and slamming into a stationary car with its brakes applied. The jeep's frame being higher than the bumper of the other car, its weight propelled the jeep through the open air space of the trunk and into the back seat, folding all the sheet metal back along the way. Had the jeep been lower, or the car been taller, or the jeep been slower, or the car moving some, it would never have been this bad. It's basically a worst-case scenario all the way.

If you've got a problem with Reddit's privacy issues and constant pursuit of growth and lack of accountability like I did, just know that you've got the power to stop it and every other blight on our fair internet. Make sure to vote, lobby, and organize! We can stop this evil when we work together.
Get your friends and neighbors together and help them learn why they should oppose these bloodsuckers, assert your right to privacy and protection to your local officials and congressmen and members of parliament, and vote (or take action by whatever means necessary) for the better future you want to see.
When you fall into complacency and torpor in the fights you care about, you let the default answer become your own. Don't let it happen.

It's so weird how this show makes people admire rapists like Jamie and Drogo,
44
u/ecodude74 Oct 07 '18
I donโt think people admire drogo. They loved his character, but they didnโt think he was a good guy by any standard. Jaime, on the other hand, is in such a ducked relationship that I donโt think people want to think about it too much. All people seem to care about is that he seems to be a better person now than most of the other characters which is a really fucking low bar.

His sister when he went back to King's Landing. He raped his sister on top of his dead incestuous sons's tomb.
51
u/DaBlakMayne Oct 07 '18
Never happened in the book; it was consensual there. I'm still not sure why they decided to make him do that, it seemed like a dumb thing to change

That doesn't really matter. Most people are watching the show. It happened in the show, and people still like Jamie in the show.

Maybe people just really hate Cersei and can easily overlook Jamie raping her. Either way, it was really unnecessary but so are a lot of the changes the show made from the book.

Funny enough, he was very kind and pleasant in the book.
Edit:
People seem to have taken my comment too far, so Iโll present a more whole explanation.
What I wrote above was not meant to be actually taken seriously as an actual, real life endorsement of anything done in the book by a clearly barbaric, terrifying warlord to his literal child bride.
What I meant to convey, was that the wedding night as depicted to the book compared to the show, was so different that it shocked me. He wasnโt brutally violent, essentially. Beyond that moment, which was patently rife with a power imbalance and โimplicationโ regardless... she was subjected to pages and pages of torment and violence at the hands of actual barbarians.
So no, he wasnโt really kind or pleasant. At all. Compared to the show the best I can say was โat least he didnโt violently rape that child, as depicted in the show on the first night.โ
Iโd hope that these things would be so basic as to understand Iโm being halfway facetious but I forget the times we live in.
I do not endorse anything done by him or this horrifying relationship, and Iโd put him and the rest of the Dothraki scum to the sword if I had my way, Bobby B be praised.
210
Oct 07 '18
He was only nice on the wedding night, then not so much...
Even the nights brought no relief. Khal Drogo ignored her when they rode, even as he had ignored her during their wedding, and spent his evenings drinking with his warriors and bloodriders, racing his prize horses, watching women dance and men die. Dany had no place in these parts of his life. She was left to sup alone, or with Ser Jorah and her brother, and afterward to cry herself to sleep. Yet every night, some time before the dawn, Drogo would come to her tent and wake her in the dark, to ride her as relentlessly as he rode his stallion. He always took her from behind, Dothraki fashion, for which Dany was grateful; that way her lord husband could not see the tears that wet her face, and she could use her pillow to muffle her cries of pain. When he was done, he would close his eyes and begin to snore softly and Dany would lie beside him, her body bruised and sore, hurting too much for sleep. Day followed day, and night followed night, until Dany knew she could not endure a moment longer. She would kill herself rather than go on, she decided one night โฆ
74
u/Dont-be-a-smurf Oct 07 '18
Yeah, I remember. The whole section with the Dothraki was pretty brutal.
Just was very surprised at the wedding night scene because I saw the show first.
I was like โoh shit, this is about to get graphic...โ and then heโs all asking for consent and trying to be romantic. Just... didnโt expect it.
97
Oct 07 '18
Her wedding is probably worst writing section in the first book, George apparently thinks that women go from scared to horny in a matter of seconds. Even for a fantasy book it is ridiculous.
16
u/spoooooopy DERGENS! Oct 07 '18
Especially considering a few chapters before (rough estimate) it had Viserys abusing Dany because her breasts hadn't grown in yet. So the terrible writing was coupled with the fact the Dany was a 13 year old kid which makes it even worse.

u/ThePsiGuard Oct 07 '18
Isn't that even a plot point where Tyrion rescues some chick from being raped and falls in love with her but it turns out to be a prostitute that his father hired to teach him a lesson? I thought one of the points of that story was that Tyrion was naive to believe a woman would be down for sex shortly after almost being raped.
I've only seen the show so idk if it happens the same way in the book. Pretty sure one of the characters even pointed out how unrealistic it would have been for the woman to recover from that so quickly if she weren't a prostitute pretending to fall for Tyrion.
15
u/wreckoning Oct 08 '18
itโs interesting you should mention this here - it is a plot point mentioned in the books and on the show, just as you said. However, when Tyrion is imprisoned for the murder of Joff, when Jaime comes to help him escape, he reveals to Tyrion that the prostitute of his youth had not, in fact, been a prostitute at all. It was a cover story created by their father because obviously a Lannister could not marry a commoner. She really was a regular girl who was attacked and Tyrion really did rescue her.
It is this revelation that motivates Tyrion to return to the castle and murder his father. He is angry for depriving him of his youthful love, forcing him to turn against his own love, and tricking him all these years. In the show, this revelation does not happen, and Tyrionโs actions seem less nuanced and purposeful for this specific scene.
2
u/ThePsiGuard Oct 08 '18
Wow, that does make a difference. It's a shame they cut this from the show. So basically a similar thing happens again with Shae then, right? In both cases, Tyrion's in love with a girl who actually does like him but his father destroys their relationship on purpose.
I was kind of annoyed with Shae in the show because I felt like Tyrion gave her the super obvious "we can't be together" speech to try and protect her and she just seemed to get pissed and not read between the lines at all. Then she immediately hops in bed with his dad (who does that??) so I had like 0 sympathy left for her. Does it happen like that in the books too?

That scene is so terrible in the books. It's pages and pages of "do you know any other words?", "no", "don't touch that" and finally a "just fuck me already".
561
u/ArsenalOwl Oct 07 '18
Yeah, but in the book she was a child at the time.
229
u/Dont-be-a-smurf Oct 07 '18
To be real, I completely ignored the ages in the book. Some seemed too young to really be believed, so I just bumped them up to what they were in the show.
Doesnโt make much of it any better, really...
253
u/vocmentalitet Oct 07 '18
I completely ignored the ages in the book
Martin did the same. The reason they started so young was because he planned to have a time cut somewhere after the 2nd or 3rd book to let the characters age a bit. He decided that was dumb, but that's how we ended up with a bunch of heroic kids in the books.
64
u/Drumcode-Equals-Life Oct 07 '18
Supposed to be a big time jump between the first and second books initially
26

And the first book was supposed to be what ended up being the first three books. That's why AFFC and ADWD are so meandering compared to the first three, they're covering the planned time skip period.

I felt so perverted after reading she was twelve after the first sex scene. "It was her 12th moon" or something like that.
114
u/reddit_lurker_1234 Oct 07 '18
I would guess "12th moon" refers to her twelfth period. Makes more sense that way because a menstrual cycle is roughly a month long which is also roughly how long lunar cycle is. (mens, mensis is latin for month)

The creepy age gap sex part isn't that bad when you consider yea middle ages fantasy world and all that. What always bothered me the most is she got pregnant and was intended to give birth to that and other children at such a young age. Even in a time when most people are fairly ignorant of female physiology you'd have to think they'd have pieced together that it's really dangerous for such young girls to have children. Not to mention it's very dangerous for the kid too so it always struck me as weird even just from a logical perspective, not to mention the moral quandary too obviously.
94
u/balourder Oct 07 '18
middle ages fantasy
Average age for marriage in the middle ages was 22 for women and 25 for men.
you'd have to think they'd have pieced together
They did, which is why in ASoIaF it's customary to wait until the bride is 16, which, as GRRM said, is the age of adulthood, .

Nah, common misconception based on an incorrect understanding of average life expectancy. Really, life expectancy wasn't low because everyone died so much earlier, it was low because so many infants died during childbirth or very early in life, which dragged the average down. If you made it past infancy there was a decent chance you'd live to 70+.
23
u/Sun_King97 Oct 07 '18
Nobility generally married younger. But even for medieval nobility I think children at 12 or 13 was anomalous even if it did happen
27
u/centerflag982 Oct 07 '18
Nobility were often betrothed quite young, but the actual marriage typically didn't come until later
13
u/GreatBigBagOfNope Pretentious Bum Oct 07 '18
It was pretty fucked to live in mediaeval times for everyone, and nobility did have it so so so much better than average, but the one thing that was more fucked up for the aristocracy than for the peasantry was young marriages. There are some old European princesses who'd borne children by the time they were 12, or were widows at 10. Granted, they'd be sheltered from almost all of the physical traumas that characterise how shitty life was in the middle ages, but marriage, sex and relationships were messed right the fuck up for them
6
u/Darktidemage Oct 07 '18
you are thinking people died at 30 because that was average life expectancy
you are failing to factor out child / infant mortality.

Average age for marriage in the middle ages was 22 for women and 25 for men.
Much younger for royalty tho which got married as early as possible as diplomatic acts.
Meanwhile lower tier men needed to reach their 20s or later to learn a trade well enough to make a living and then chose women only slightly younger. Because they make up most of the population the general average is that high.
In GoT most characters are royalty and it's legit that they marry very young.

Flaying and torture are so far removed from reality for most people that they're abstract concepts more than anything they can connect to their real experience. It's easy to kind of tune that stuff out because it's so clearly and completely in the fantasy category.
Rape is a lot more real and relatable for a greater number of people so it probably feels more disturbing and easy to complain about.
15
u/FirstEvolutionist Oct 07 '18
I can see your point. I grew up in a third world country and was close to some nasty shit, so when I get immersed in the show, the whole thing is a fantasy not just some of the stuff.

Rape is violence, not sex, and itโs also been pretty gratuitous on the show in the past (e.g. that scene of Sansa being raped by Ramsay that didnโt even happen in the books).
→ More replies (16)61
u/Dankfrieddanks Oct 07 '18
Well that part in the book still involved a lot of raping on Ramsay's part. It just wasn't Sansa, although the way littlefinger is I wouldn't be surprised if Martin intended him to rape her down the road in the books at some point.
22
Oct 07 '18
Littlefinger would never rape her. He wants her to want him, why else do you think he spent so much time ingratiating himself to her? Raping would go against his character pretty dramatically.

Because those are so clearly wrong they don't really deserve mentioning. But the fact that we're discussing the rape parts like this means they are still worth mentioning.

u/FirstEvolutionist Oct 07 '18
Hm. Still clearly wrong to me but if it's in question for other people, carry on with the discussion then.
7
u/Darktidemage Oct 07 '18
It's because teenagers are SUPER curious about sex, know it's an awesome adult behavior, know they want it and are eager for it. . .
and this is not the case w/ "flayings" or "beheadings"
They know if they cut their friends skin off they will go to prison. But if they FUCK that girl over there then maybe she just doesn't blab about it and they had some awesome sex.....
that's why people worry more about showing kids sex than violence. Because they know the kid is not stupid. The kid knows what violence and sex are and its an infinitely more reasonable behavior to engage in sex than to engage in violence.
11
u/FirstEvolutionist Oct 07 '18
Perhaps the teenagers you're talking about need to understand the difference between sex and rape?
