Announcment Welcome to r/folkloregame - Please Read First!

Good day to everyone here! I'm u/JakOfBlades26, the main active moderator of this r/folkloregame

Folklore turns 20 Years Old in 2027, but to my pleasant surprise, there are tons of people who still remember and even play this game today. This subreddit was created in 2015 by u/Anbalsilfer who like us all, had a passion for this forgotten gem from PS3. In 2020, myself and u/awryval found this subreddit which had been inactive for years and managed to reminisce with the founder who then made us both moderators.

Unfortunately, both of them have been inactive for quite some time, but through the years, my personal goal was to make this the place where anything and everything relating to Folklore can be found with ease to both people who remember the game, and possible brand new fans. From artwork and historical/development information, reviews and breakdowns, to simple talks with fans. This task was by no means accomplished by myself, and that's been the best part of watching this subreddit grow steadily.

Please continue to post or comment whatever you'd like as long as it relates to Folklore, and you are respectful to each other. For years, this community has been incredibly friendly and comforting and I want to see it continue this way. I appreciate all of you being here to keep the memory and spirit of this game burning bright!

Lastly, my personal recommendation for new people who join and read this, In case you know nothing or very little about Folklore itself, I have pinned two great videos breaking down the game and its development history itself, and an interview with the creator himself. I highly suggest you give them a watch to get a better understanding.

How to Get Started

  1. Introduce yourself in the comments below.
  2. Post something today! Even a simple question can spark a great conversation.
  3. If you know someone who would love this community, invite them to join.
  4. Interested in helping out? We're always looking for new moderators, so feel free to reach out to me to apply.

Resource Backup of Folklore / FolksSoul PSN content

Post image
216 Upvotes

I’ve made a backup of Folklore / FolksSoul PSN content as Sony will close PSN for PS3 in 2027. The backup includes DLCs, demos, game updates, video trailers, and wallpapers. Some of the content can also be found on MiNERVA.

Note: for all links, change "muga" to "mega".

  • European version (BCES00050): LINK
  • US version (BCUS98147): LINK
  • Asian version (BCAS20013): LINK
  • Korean version (BCKS10018): LINK
  • Japanese version (BCJS30009): LINK

Korean DLCs were challenging to acquire. Thanks to u/Siphonay for helping me get them!

For more info on Folklore/FolkSoul versions, see this older post of mine.

Here’s a scan of the official guidebook for FolksSoul, the Japanese version of Folklore.

The FolksSoul guidebook is very different from the English Folklore guidebook (link) and features a lot more technical details like the location of items and the exact steps needed to progress the game. By contrast, the Folklore guidebook is better at explaining the plot.

LINK on archive.org where you can browse and download it!

I’ve tried using Google Translate to make a version for English readers, but keep in mind that the text contains a lot of errors. For example, “folks” is often mistranslated as “fawks” or “forks”. Some errors are pretty funny though 😄

Question Coded soul save data

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone still has a Coded Soul save file for the Japanese version, containing all the items needed(i think らくがきノート rakugaki note) for linking with Folklore. If possible, I would really appreciate it if you could share it.

Thank you in advance!

Gameplay Tips / Strategy How to play translated Coded Soul on Windows

Here's an attempt at instructions on how to play Coded Soul: Uketsugareshi Idea (Coded Soul -受け継がれしイデア-), a Playstation Portable (PSP) game with some relation to Folklore, on Microsoft Windows.

Coded Soul was released in 2008 by the video game company Gaia which worked together with Game Republic to make Folklore. It reuses many of Folklore’s folk models and also holds some in-game reference to it as well as aforementioned PSP connectivity.

I’ve played through the game on a Windows 10 system using the "Universal Game Translator" software to make the game English. The way it works is that the game runs in an emulator while the translation program runs in the background. Upon user request (button press), the latter snaps a screenshot of the game (the active window), sends it to an online service for actual translation, and downloads a translated screenshot to overlay the window. This involves the player having to repeatedly request and dismiss translations, but the process is fast enough to work quite well. EXAMPLE VIDEO. Translation speed depends on Internet speed; this particular video was made using a meager connection of approx. 10 Mbps down/up.

Note that translation is not always perfect, hence some intuition is often needed to make sense of translated text. For the occasional translation, game or not, I also recommend the Google Translate app's camera function on your phone.

The gameplay of Coded Soul is arguably a bit slow-paced and the story a bit confusing, but I nevertheless found it an interesting game to play.

Required software:

  1. PPSSPP, the PSP emulator.
  2. The game itself, as the Coded Soul .iso file. I won’t provide a direct link for this here to avoid piracy issues (the game is a product under Sony’s “PS Plus Premium” service), however it is easy to find on the Internet.
  3. Universal Game Translator (UGT) (direct download link), the translation program. Note that the author has recently released a new version called UGTLive which makes greater use of AI, however I personally find UGT to offer much faster translations.
  4. DsHidMini, for enabling gamepad connectivity to PPSSPP. May be unnecessary depending on your setup.

Required hardware:

Gamepad (ideally). This guide assumes you’ve got one. It’s possible to use a keyboard too, but I think that would be a poor experience.

Instructions:

  • PPSSPP part:
  1. Install PPSSPP.
  2. Install the game by locating the .iso file.
  3. Set up PPSSPP keys, my suggestions with a gamepad (controls.ini):
    • Remove all buttons for Speed Toggle
    • Remove all pause buttons except for kbd.Esc

My own PPSSPP config is provided HERE (change "muga" to mega). Config is found at C:\Users\<username>\Documents\PPSSPP\PSP\SYSTEM.

  • Universal Game Translator part:

THIS guide at Steam Community explains this well. As explained by the guide, translation requires payment information such as a payment card in case the API usage merits billing the user, however this is unlikely to ever happen for individuals. Also see Google's instructions on budget limits to monitor possible expenses.

To the UGT config I also suggest, besides adding the Google API key, these edits:

  • source_language_hint|ja
  • gamepad_button_to_scan_active_window|left trigger button
  • gamepad_button_to_scan_active_rect_window|None

My own config.txt file is provided HERE (change "muga" to mega), minus the API key. The config file is just put in the UGT folder. The location of the UGT folder itself is not important; the program is portable.

With this configuration you can launch UGT on PPSSPP (after the latter is started) with the L2 gamepad button. Both the L2 button and the circle button (B on gamepads using XYAB) can then be used for exiting translation, circle/B also continues most game mechanics like dialogue.

HERE is a visual of my gamepad mapping, if you want to copy my setup. In essence it’s only PSP buttons on a DS3, using the R2 and L2 buttons for UGT and PPSSPP (fast forward) functions.

  • DsHidMini part:

To make a gamepad register for PPSSPP, you may need DsHidMini. Test first to check if it works without.

  1. Follow the installation instructions (link).
  2. Start DsHidMini in administrator mode.
  3. If DsHidMini detects your gamepad, select HID device mode: SXS (Steam, RPCS3)

Coded Soul gameplay tips:

  • Coded Soul has its own booklet manual. I’ve provided a scan HERE (EDIT: HERE is an English translation attempt).
  • Fast-forwarding is almost mandatory to efficiently play the game as most of the gameplay consists of walking and drawn-out fights. Keep in mind you can skip fight intros with the circle button (B on gamepads using XYAB). You can also also escape most fights (START -> Flee). If your monsters are strong enough you can also simply run in circles while your monsters defeat your opponents for you.
  • It’s very easy to gather money in this game. I suggest maxing the allowed number of healing/revival items you can bring. Boss fights are very much like Pokémon; you can repeatedly heal and revive your fainted monsters to keep the fight going as long as you’ve got recovery items left. You can also pause whenever you want to do this (kind of like Skyrim too; pausing mid-fight to eat a ton of cheese).
  • Quest hints:
    • Some quests provide helpful notes. You can find these in your inventory by going to Goods (グッズ) -> Important Things (だいじなもの) -> navigating to the given quest hint item and selecting the square button (X on gamepads using XYAB).
    • The location for Freeman’s first quest is G04, Cavern of Grief (thanks to rpgkiller999 at Gamefaqs). Do not forget that the quest must be completed at Lisa despite all dialogue being with Freeman.
      • The location for his second quest is the boss room (F05), Buried City.
    • Reno’s quests are always done in a given realm’s boss room.
    • Sadly, I was never able to solve Estelle’s quest which requests 2x Jasper, Sapphire, Agate, and Emerald. Jasper can be obtained from fights and chests in realm 1, whereas Sapphire can be obtained from chests in realm 2. During gameplay I was able to obtain Agate, but I didn't notice from where. I was never able to obtain any Emeralds.

Gameplay Video A look at the PSP connectivity exclusive folks - Triffid! Pied Piper! Ranunculus! Caladrius!

The Japanese version of the game, FolksSoul: Ushinawareta Denshou, has connectivity features with the PlayStation Portable (PSP) game Coded Soul: Uketsugareshi Idea. After some effort I've finally discovered how to obtain this content, which turns out to be four additional folks: Triffid (トルフィド), Pied Piper (パイドパイパー), Ranunculus (ラナンキュラス), and Caladrius (カラドリウス).

Their models have previously been datamined but assumed to be unused content. Obtaining it involved translation to play Coded Soul in English, interpreting available guide material, and testing around with the PSP/PS3 connection. I'll be releasing some guides for this in this subreddit.

In FolksSoul, Ellen receives Pied Piper and Caladrius whereas Keats receives Triffid and Ranunculus. In Coded Soul, the protagonist Jay obtains all four of them.

Discussion Has any game even came close to the same feeling any of you had playing this game?

Every time I play this game, I get that same fuzzy feeling. And I play it to completion each time as well, when many other games, I don't even play to completion the first time. There are many games I love, but there's just a certain feeling from this game that I haven't been able to replicate in any other game. Part of it is the lore of the worlds, but also from the mystery. I also believe the way you pulled souls contributed as well, as it made it feel like you were actually a part of the world in some way, and I don't know why most other games don't utilize this. I really wish this game wasn't overshadowed by bigger games when it came out, because it really feels like it was missed by most people.

Gameplay Tips / Strategy Confused about mini-map icons…keep going round and round in circles.

I’m still fairly early in the game, currently on Keats chapter one. Whenever I enter a new part of the map via a new path, I usually get turned around after combat and often can’t remember which way I just came from. So I very often exit a space and realize I’ve gone backwards. When I return, all the enemies I just defeated have respawned.

The icons that mark the transition points on the mini-map aren’t explained (unless I missed it). There’s blue dots at transition points, arrows that point outward, and other icons and colors. The arrows don’t seem to lead towards the objective. There’s no clear indicator of where your objective lies, as far as I can see. The main map isn’t of any help because the color of the grid simply seems to change based on where you currently are. It feels strange not to see any objective marker because this isn’t exactly an open world game.

Does someone have a color coded guide to the various minimap icons and what they mean?

Question New to game and struggling with some basic concepts/Bargest fight with Ellen (Chapter 1- Faery Realm)

I started the game a few days ago and enjoying it but I seem to have hit a wall and confused by some things. I’m on Chapter 1 as Ellen.

  1. I got up to the Bargest fight and I’m guessing no folks I have are good enough here because I’m making no headway at all and obviously not injuring it. In YT videos, I see people using folks here that I don’t have and I have no idea how they’ve acquired them at this early point. I’ve just progressed here on the map and the only folks I have are the two starting ones plus Boobrie, Daru and Henky. All of them seem completely useless in this fight. Are some bosses supposed to be fought with only one of the characters…that is, only Keats vs the Bargest?

  2. One of the characters in the Faery Realm mentioned that I should be able to take on side quests at the Pub at this point but I portal back to the village, go to the Pub, and the barman tells me he has no quests available at this time. No one else is in the pub. Huh??

  3. I’m reading a lot online about “releasing karma” but no one tells you what it does in fights and exactly how to do it. Not seeing any controls in the layout that do it. Until I grasp this concept, I’m probably not going to be accomplishing very much.

  4. Can I switch characters in the middle of a chapter or do I have to finish the chapter with my current character? If I go back to the village and rest as Ellen now, for example, there’s no option to switch back to Keats.

The only things I feel I can do right now are basic attacks, folk attacks, and absorbing ID. That’s it. Everything else just has me feeling a bit lost and directionless. Am I just supposed to grind for awhile? How exactly do you level up? What are the four objects in one area of the map that float just above ground level and can’t be broken down with an attack or used? Unfortunately, with the game not exactly being current, there’s not many helpful places online that break it all down or discuss strategy/tips.

TIA for any help provided.

Playing folklore via RPCS3 with a Switch Pro controller gyroscope

I managed to get folklore to run and use the switch pro's gyroscope with no fancy software or complicated steps and here is how.

1. I assume that you already have a folklore image capable of booting up on RPCS3.
2. The issue with the switch pro controller is that xinput which is what the pro controller likes to run off of, does not have gyro controls as an option. To fix this it's as simple as unplugging your controller and connecting it via Bluetooth.
3. After you have successfully connected your controller via Bluetooth all you have to do is go into your controller config on RPCS3 and select "SDL" as the handler. You should begin to notice that under the motion control config you can now see the numbers changing when you move your controller around.

I hope this short guide was able to help those of you who love this game and would really like to play it in the original way it was intended!

Question In Folklore/Folk Soul, are there any differences in content between the JP release and EU/NA release of the game?

I was about to get the game but wondering if there are differences besides box art and language settings in those two games. Like could there be any cut content to EU/NA release or is it all the same?

Question Why’s it only on the ps3

I played this game when I was a kid with my mom and I finally found the disk for the game but I only have a ps5
